Sue Moran, a long-term student of the Italian language with Salvatore Bisaccia, (who’s
been teaching Italian classes at Ann Arbor’s Paesano’s restaurant for years), read the Carlo
Collodi fable of Pinnochio. The Italian classes led to the story, which led to the Pinocchio
project, which led to a grant, which led to a trip to Italy, which led to the current exhibition
of textiles!
In 2006 Sue Moran received a grant from the National Surface Design Association to research
Italian silk, velvets and brocades in Florence and Prato. While there, she visited the hometown
of Carlo Collodi, author of Pinocchio, to get a sense of the environment and the life of the
time. Nearby, the small city of Lucca provided a rich trove of ancient architectural detail,
which resulted in work that links the narrative and decorative, the rustic with the refined
and the mundane with the magical. Italian architecture with its layers of paint, repairs and
renovations is much like a handmade textile, image and color is embedded in the structure
of the material itself.
The exhibition will also include “A Year of Walks”, 12 panels inspired by daily, meditative
walks thru nature…one artistic creation for every month of the year…a tribute to the
changing cycle of the seasons. Moran has been teaching at the College for Creative Studies
in Detroit Michigan since 1986.
Paesano’s offers guests a true Italian experience beyond what goes on in the kitchen: cooking
classes, wine tasting and education classes taught by Erin Zitka and an annual guided “dine
and wine” trip to Italy. The restaurant also features 3 levels of Italian language classes taught
by Sicilian born, Salvatore Bissacia. www.paesanosannarbor.com
