Throughout the Years
Park Happenings
Message from the Executive Director
The Prospect Heights Park District (PHPD) continues to celebrate its 50th Anniversary with more
events through the remainder of the year. We are looking forward to the family-friendly Spookfest
on Trick or Treat Street with carnival games, haunted hay rides, Great Pumpkin Egg Hunt and
terrific entertainment. The Turkey Shootout Scramble is sure to be a festive, holiday golf event that
wraps up the golf season. We are certain to have a good ole’ birthday party for the community to
celebrate PHPD’s 50th. A lot to look forward to!
This year of celebration has been a time of reflection for many here at PHPD. We understand park districts are important
for many reasons of which several are obvious: open land, educational opportunities, creating a sense of community and
enjoying leisure activities during discretionary time. There are also more reasons that are often overlooked. We allow young
patrons to learn about confidence, self-esteem, team work and interpersonal skills; we allow young employees to learn about
communication, time management, integrity, and creativity; we allow all ages the opportunity to socialize, exercise, and
continue learning new skills. We basically provide something for everyone to do which helps people stay healthy. All of
these are valuable and contribute to the quality of life in this community. In my short time with the PHPD, I have
observed that residents have a sense of pride in this Park District. This surely motivates us to continue to work hard and
strive to give you the best experience possible.
If you would like to get updates to stay informed of happenings at the PHPD please “Like” us on Facebook or follow us on
Twitter @PHparkdist. We post program information, photos, etc. You may also visit www.phparks.org, sign-up for enewsletter, or call 847.394.2848.
I am very proud of PHPD programs, services and the dedicated staff to make your visit a positive experience. It is our
pleasure to serve the residents of this wonderful community. If you have an idea for a program please let us know. Thank
you for all of your support throughout the year!
Sincerely,
Christina Ferraro, Executive Director

PARK DISTRICT YOUTH LICENSE PLATE
Get licensed to support Illinois youth! The sale and
subsequent renewals of each plate generate money
for the Power Play Grant Program, which funds youth
programs in park and recreation agencies throughout Illinois.
The goal of the Power Play program is to increase the number
of opportunities designed to show youth the lifelong benefits
of fitness, health, and nutrition. Visit the Secretary of State's
web site to find out if the personalized and/or vanity plate
you want is available; or call IAPD's office at 217-523-4554.

Creative Kids Preschool
Our program consists of half structured and half unstructured
class time. Our structured curriculum incorporates Jolly
Phonics and Handwriting without tears. A typical day would
start with exploratory time when children choose from a
variety of centers including painting, computer use,
manipulative toys, and dress-up. During this time children will
complete a craft for the day in small groups. After clean-up
time, children learn songs, counting, alphabet, sounds and
calendar on the rug. Music, musical instruments, puppets and
large muscle movement are alternated. After snack time,
academic papers are completed. We reinforce using scissors,
gluing, shapes, colors, numbers, letters, matching, sequencing,
and sorting. The end of the day includes a visit to the park or
indoor gym. This program incorporates trips which may
include: fire station, library, a pumpkin patch, and amusement
centers. An extra charge for admission and /or bus fee is
required for some trips.
