Preoccupied by the exciting development of our new shared home at the BMO Theatre Centre, we nevertheless had a very successful season at the box office and continued our efforts to strengthen our Board and diversify our revenues. It has been a time of transformation, with a huge investment of new talent in our Board, a focus on strategic planning, and new heights in fundraising. Our Board retreat in February significantly strengthened Board-staff relationships and encouraged us to think more boldly and with more ambition about what we could achieve together. Led in so many ways by the indefatigable Stan Hamilton (project management, government relations, fund and friend raising) and through warm collaboration with our partners, Bard on the Beach, the huge tasks of planning, funding, managing, and realizing our new home were taken on successfully on top of all the regular activities of putting on so many plays and activities to critical acclaim and audience delight. We have made significant strides in many areas this year, including a strong planned giving program, a more Ross Paul active Human Resources committee, a more streamlined committee system, and a major strategic planning exercise 3 Annual Report 2014/2015 Richard Mulcaster Chair, Arts Club of Vancouver Theatre Foundation (2011–2015) A t last year’s Annual General Meeting we had the excitement of signing the Arts Club of Vancouver Theatre Foundation’s lease with the City of Vancouver for the cultural amenities space located at 162 West 1st Avenue. This agreement launched us into an amazing adventure with Bard on the Beach and the Arts Club Theatre Company in creating this wonderful venue for the arts community in Vancouver. On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Arts Club Foundation, I am delighted to tell you that the BMO Theatre Centre is virtually complete, on time, and on budget. What an accomplishment! Throughout the fiscal year, board members provided exceptional assistance with the BMO Theatre Centre project, assisting management and liaising with government, our partners, and other agencies as well as sourcing private donors to raise funds for the tenant improvements. The Arts Club Foundation continues to own the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage, an important cultural icon in the City of Vancouver. This year alone, the Arts Club Theatre Company welcomed over 146,000 patrons to seven productions at the Stanley. At year end, the market value of our endowment funds held with Genus Capital Management exceeded $3.1 million. The Department of Canadian Heritage’s Endowment Matching program continues to be a critical part of our success and growth. This year we were very thankful to be awarded matching funds of 96% of our funds raised. December 2015 marks a milestone for me as I am retiring from my role with the Foundation. I have been honoured to serve as Chair of the Foundation for the past 4 years and have enjoyed the opportunity to work with the highly talented and innovative staff at the Arts Club Theatre Company. The arts community in Vancouver is fortunate to have you! Finally, I wish to again thank my fellow Board members for your hard work and for being part of the Arts Club’s continuing success. The Arts Club’s 2014/2015 season marked our 51st season of producing theatre in 3 venues as well as on tour, and it started off with some great favourites. The season opened at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage with 4000 Miles, starring the venerable Nicola Cavendish alongside two emerging young artists, and directed by long-time associate Roy Surette; on Granville Island, Sarah Rodgers directed Holly Lewis in her Arts Club debut Educating Rita with first Scott Bellis and then Ted Cole appearing opposite. The hugely entertaining Avenue Q went on tour, and Carmen Aguirre’s searing Blue Box opened the Revue Stage season. Next up at the Stanley, Kim Collier’s stunning production of George Bernard Shaw’s Saint Joan starred Meg Roe and 12 of this country’s finest actors, and earned Dean Paul Gibson a Jessie Award for his Arts Club debut. We had something for everyone on our stages over the holiday season, with Avenue Q, A Twisted Christmas Carol, and Mary Poppins. First up in the New Year, The Odd Couple went on tour, our annual presentation with the PuSh Festival featured the chilling Bullet Catch, the contemporary British farce One Man, Two Guvnors played at the Stanley, and The Mountaintop, with strong performances by Dion Johnstone and Crystal Balint, directed by Janet Wright, played at the Misérables. These three shows alone engaged a combined Granville Island Stage. 60 actors/musicians, 15 designers, and 25 technicians. Next on tour, we presented Pacific Theatre’s rollicking I couldn’t oversee this level of activity without the dedicated production of The Foreigner. At the Revue Stage was our and talented staff that I work with every day, in particular first premiere of the year—and a Silver Commission— Artist Liaison Stephanie Hargreaves and Executive Director Sister Judy by Shawn Macdonald, which sadly was the last Peter Cathie White. I would also like to salute our dedicated production to be staged at our Revue Stage, as next season Board of Directors led by Chair Ross Paul. we move to the Goldcorp Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre. Jay Brazeau returned to the Stanley Stage in Christopher Durang’s absurdist Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, directed by the Arts Club’s Literary Manager Rachel Ditor. Our second premiere in the season was Aaron Bushkowsky’s Bill Millerd stylish film noir inspired Farewell, My Lovely, in a co-production with Calgary’s Vertigo Theatre. Our final three shows were musicals—In the Heights, Godspell, and a revival of Les Annual Report 2014/2015 6 Executive Director Peter Cathie White L et’s raise a glass to the successful completion of our joint project with Bard on the Beach—the BMO Theatre Centre. I love how this project came together: two companies of humble beginnings that have grown with local community support to become pillars of the theatrical community within BC. For the Arts Club, that’s seen us grow from a grass-roots company, started by a group of local artists having a beer at a club on Seymour Street and think- ing the attic above might be a good place to put on a show. Wouldn’t that group of artists have been amazed to see that little attic grow into what the Arts Club is today! Three theatres, a provincial touring program, over 700 individual performances a season, and the largest theatrical employer in Western Canada. The 2014/2015 season saw more subscribers than ever before at Arts Club theatres. I’m also thrilled to say that this season, our number of subscriber-donors almost doubled. As a not-for-profit charitable organization that is dependent upon donations for our survival, this is a spectacular achievement and says a lot about what the Arts Club means to this community. I am honoured to be the Executive Director of this great and vibrant theatre company. We have an exceptional team, from our intrepid leader Bill Millerd and our artists and production team—who get our art on our stages, to guest services like front-of-house, box office, and the bar—who look after our patrons, to our Administration, Education, Development, and Marketing teams—who ensure we have a future to grow into. Thank you all for the work you do to make this company the greatest it can be. Peter Cathie White 7 Annual Report 2014/2015 Kathy Mackenzie Director of Development I am pleased to report that 2014/2015 was an exceptional year for the Arts Club’s Fund Development Department. We met and exceeded our fundraising target, experienced unprecedented growth in our individual giving and special event campaigns, and participated in a very successful joint capital campaign with Bard on the Beach. Raising funds to support the work on our stages is critical to maintaining high production values, but there is so much activity behind-the-scenes that also requires donor support. Some of our most important donor driven initiatives include new play development, artistic training, and youth and education programs. In 2015, for the first time, the Arts Club hired a Director of Education. We are working to expand the reach of our student matinees and subsidized ticket programmes and have begun laying the ground work for participatory workshops led by artists. Thanks to the City of Vancouver, the Arts Club and Bard on the Beach began construction on a 52,000-square-foot theatre centre that will become the new administrative home to both companies. With a new 240-seat state-of-the-art theatre for the Arts Club, two costume shops, and four rehearsal halls, we spent much of the year fundraising, planning, and building what will no doubt be the next chapter in the Arts Club’s future. Thanks to 88 donors, the Arts Club and Bard on the Beach raised over $14 million dollars. Special mention needs to be made to the City, the Province, the Department of Canadian Heritage, and to the naming donors: BMO Financial Group, who have named the centre, and Goldcorp, who have named the stage. We are so very grateful to all of the businesses and individuals who have made our dream into a reality. On behalf of the Development team, I would like to thank our donors, sponsors, and volunteers for their ongoing support and their continued belief in the work that we are doing to bring the very best in live theatre to Vancouver. Thank you! Kathy Mackenzie Arts Club Patrons By the Numbers 2014/15 2013/14 Annual Report 2014/2015 • 1,951 donors (that’s an increase of 44%! ) • 1,056 • 895 NEW donors RETURNING 8 donors Bryan Woo Director of Marketing F or Sales & Marketing, the season was filled with transitions. As I transitioned into the role of Director—to carry on the successes of my predecessor, and new Executive Director Peter Cathie White—our company prepared for a transition to a new home at the BMO Theatre Centre. Throughout these transitions, the team has prospered and the subscription campaign once again reached new heights—outpacing every metric in record time. It is a testament to our inspired productions and the hard work of the department that so many of our loyal fans renewed their support. Emerging as the next generation of theatre-goers, our base of casual ticket buyers is larger and more active than ever before. The department’s effective efforts in converting single ticket buyers into repeat buyers, through targeted offers and messaging, is the foundation of developing theatre as a habit. As a result of Sales & Marketing’s new integrated loyalty efforts with the Fund Development team, the company has seen an unprecedented growth in subscribers who also donate. A renewed focus on direct marketing and patron loyalty initiatives has led to a higher proportion of same-household ticketing and donation activity. We have also worked hard to provide added value for our most devoted supporters by partnering with local businesses. In the same way that the Arts Club established itself on Granville Island and South Granville, we have made new connections in Olympic Village to welcome our loyal and new patrons to the Goldcorp Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre, and to share all that our new neighbourhood has to offer. My inaugural season in the Director role was made seemingly effortless by our artistically innovative productions, which were embraced by a robust base of loyal patrons. It is also with a knowledgeable and passionate Sales & Marketing department that our success can be credited. To each of you, thank you. We workshopped Morris Panych and John Mann’s The Waiting Room and held two workshops for Onegin—one focused on the narrative structure and one focused on staging and music—with a showcase presented at In Tune, the biannual conference on the creation of Canadian musicals that we co-produce with Touchstone Theatre. A highlight of the six plays read at ReACT, our free public play reading series, was our collaboration with Urban Ink, Raven Theatre, and the National Arts Centre, to present a public presentation of Corey Payette’s musical about the residential school system, Children of God. We also read David King’s commissioned Christmas play, Comfort and Joy. Then, on our stages, two Silver Commissions premiered: Aaron Bushkowsky’s adaptation of Raymond Chandler’s Farewell, My Lovely and Shawn Macdonald’s play about faith, Sister Judy. A new Silver Commission was granted to Anosh Irani to write his gothic family drama, The Gathering. Countless hours by staff and Board members over these past five years has brought this dream to reality as we moved our offices in September, started rehearsing in the facility, and officially opened the first show in the new Goldcorp Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre on November 26, 2015. In these years ahead, the facility will enrich our community in many meaningful ways. We will not only be entertaining audiences, but also employing more theatre artists than any other arts facility in Western Canada. The Arts Club’s staff involved in the project have taken enormous pride in this accomplishment and the legacy it so greatly enhances. • The BMO Theatre Centre is the largest facility in the company’s history at • 52,062 square feet. The BMO Theatre Centre is the 1st facility in the company’s history that will allow our administration and production teams to work in the same building. • Construction took place over a period of • 98 different companies and 13 months. 513 workers were directly involved in the construction of the facility. • 41,600 hours of labour were put into construction of the new building. • Special construction techniques were used to keep our rehearsal facilities downstairs and administration facilities upstairs acoustically separate. This process involved hand cranking 100s of individual “isolating jacks” in order to achieve the acoustic separation.
