Summer Newsletter 2015 - Edge School for Athletes
edgeTIMES Summer 2015 A Message from Principal Taylor Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year at Edge. We are excited to welcome back familiar faces and we are anxious to meet the new students and parents who will become part of the Edge family! The Edge School mission is to build a culture of personal excellence in academics, athletics and character development. We continue to get strong academic results, our sport programs are clearly helping students to reach their athletic goals and character development remains the cornerstone of all that we do. We have reason to celebrate. That said, our CEO and society board have given the Edge staff a clear message. We can’t rest on our laurels as we need to get to the business of bringing Edge to the next level. Our administration, teachers, coaches and support staff have been given a ‘continuous improvement’ mandate and we are actively walking the ‘personal excellence’ talk. A new school year is the perfect opportunity for a fresh start. I am excited to work with parents, staff and students to help each of our student-athletes pursue personal excellence. I would like to offer a few reminders and suggestions on how you can help your child(ren) in this endeavour: 1. Regularly engage them in discussions about their academic and athletic goals. You can really help your children in this area by encouraging them to frequently examine the gap between their desired outcomes and their current situation. Once the gap is recognized, it is important for them to devise and review plans to close the gap. 2. Help them to develop routines. a. Help them devise a regular ‘home study’ plan. This involves a re-thinking of the idea of homework, where students only do work when specific tasks are assigned by teachers. A home study strategy involves students actively devising a plan for regular review and task completion. It is ideal if families can plan for ‘home study’ time every day. b. Help them plan in advance so that healthy snacks and meals are available throughout the day. Ensure that a water bottle is packed daily so that they can keep hydrated. c. Set up a bedtime routine. It is best if electronics are turned off and kept out of the bedroom well before bedtime. Encourage a relaxing and quiet activity, like reading, before bed. This is great for sleep and has the added benefit of improving reading, writing and comprehension. 3. Encourage your child to advocate for themselves. Inevitably issues will arise with peers, teammates, coaches and teachers. It is important for you to help your child develop the skills and confidence necessary to resolve these conflicts on their own. I look forward to seeing you during the opening days next week. I hope that you will be able to attend the ‘Meet the Staff’ evening at 7:00pm on September 15. At this time, you’ll have a chance to connect with returning staff and meet our newest faculty member, Rhy Henderson. We are really excited to have Rhy join our team as the new junior high science teacher. My door is always open for discussions about how to help your children reach their personal best. Do not hesitate to contact me at any time. Regards, Keith Taylor edgeschool.com Academics. Athletics. Character. Athletics. Character. Edge Athletics Welcome back from the athletics team at Edge School. We are looking forward to the 2015-16 school year getting underway and helping each of our student-athletes reach their goals. The Dance Department is excited to announce that construction on Studio 3, courtesy of Edge 360 started and was completed over the summer. This new studio provided the foundation for Edge 360 Studios. Three Summer Intensives ran over the summer, two in Ballet and one in Jazz, welcoming guest instructors from as far away as Germany. We are extremely excited to introduce new Edge 360 Studios full-year after school programs beginning after the September long weekend. More information on this programing can be found here. Our Figure Skaters kept busy over the summer. Several participated in the Competitive Ice Dance Summer School Program held at Edge; as well Edge skaters had successful performances at the Wild Rose Summer Competition, and the Minto Summer Competition. Students are back in the rink Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays this fall, focusing on stroking, edge and turn fundamentals to support each skater with their individual goals. Several Edge figure skaters will participate at the Competitive Fall Invitational Competition Sept 25-27 in Canmore. It was a great summer on the course for students of the Golf Academy. Hopefully the warm weather continues so students are able to enjoy Springbank Links well into the fall. Golf student will be participating in the following events this year: • • • • September - CJGA Event at Turner Valley GC November - Fall Camp in Vancouver February - Spring Camp in Vancouver March - CJGA Event in BC May - Alberta Jr Series Event Excitement is building for the 2015-16 hockey season; all team players are currently participating in the pre-season Base Camp running August 24th to 28th. The Edge Hockey teams also kept busy over the summer, with each team conducting a two-day Base Camp in July. Many students from the Hockey Academy, both on teams and in the Skill Academy, trained at Edge this summer with the Edge 360 Spring and Summer programing; as a result our teams have never been more prepared for the season. Skill Academy players will be assigned a primary coach, depending on their grade, in order to monitor and increase player development. Coaches and players alike are looking forward to the start of the season. If you are a junior high student continuing with Multi-Sport this year, sport declarations will be sent out in early September with student demographic information. For Junior Flex students, Mrs. MacNeil will be contacting you early into the school year to ensure the school knows of your individualized schedules. Lara MacNeil, [email protected], is your junior high flex coordinator. High school flex multi sport students will be determining their individual schedules with Ms. Sargent during the first week of school. She will ensure your sport programming meets the PE requirements and best suits each student’s needs around their sporting endeavours. Please contact [email protected] with any continued... edgeschool.com Academics. Athletics. Character. Edge Athletics continued questions or concerns. Please remember that programming is on a first come, first served basis. Certain programs have limitations in spots available and availability is determined based on sheets being returned to the office, and MultiSport declaration during re-enrolment if necessary. If you are considering Dance in the first trimester (the only time it is offered for multi sport) please advise as soon as possible if you haven’t done this already. Please contact Anne McCaffrey, [email protected]. The Soccer Academy is looking forward to another great year! Students will be introduced to a goalkeeper coach and a second Academy coach, who will work closely with Soccer Director Adam Loga. In addition to the new staff, several workshops have been planned this year, each of which will focus on specific areas of training with guest instructors. Welcome back to all Edge students, we wish everyone a successful year. edgeschool.com Academics. Athletics. Character. Edge Legacy Dinner OPEN HOUSE Know any future Mountaineers?
