SAINT THOMAS A BECKET, Martyr
(1118-1170)
Becket held a number of prominent positions, including civil and canon lawyer, soldier and officer,
and the Archdeacon of Canterbury. A friend of
King Henry II, he became Chancellor of England
and was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury in
1162. He was opposed to the King’s interference
in ecclesiastical matters, and was exiled several
times. He was murdered in Canterbury Cathedral
on 29 December 1170.

SAINT SYLVESTER I, Pope (d. 335)
Pope in the reign of Emperor Constantine I, who built the Lateran
and other churches. Sent legates to the First Council of Nicaea,
and was involved in the controversy over Arianism.
NATIVITY MOMS GROUP
All moms are invited to join the Nativity Moms’ Group. Our

The World Day of Peace was established by
Pope Paul VI, and is celebrated annually on
01 January.
For 2015, Pope Francis’s Message for the
World Day of Peace begins:
At the beginning of this New Year, which we
welcome as God’s gracious gift to all humanity, I offer heartfelt wishes of peace to every
man and woman, to all the world’s peoples and nations, to heads
of state and government, and to religious leaders. In doing so, I
pray for an end to wars, conflicts and the great suffering caused by
human agency, by epidemics past and present, and by the devastation wrought by natural disasters.

SAINTS BASIL THE GREAT AND GREGORY
NAZIANZEN, Bishops and Doctors of the Church
Students together, they fought against the Arian heresy. Basil
founded monasteries and drew up a rule
for monks; he is considered as key in
the founding of eastern monastacism as
Saint Benedict is to western monasticism. Gregory became Bishop of Constantinople, and Basil was Archbishop
of Caesarea. Both were proclaimed
Doctors of the Church.

NATIVITY SCHOOL PRE-KINDERGARTEN 2015-2016
Nativity School announces it will open a pre-kindergarten for the
2015-2016 school year. Nativity is in the process of being licensed
for our new Pre-Kindergarten. Students must be 4 years old on
or before June 1st preceding the August start of school. Nativity
will begin to accept applications for our new Pre-Kindergarten
in December. The purpose of the Pre-Kindergarten is to jumpstart your preschooler’s transition to Kindergarten. Your child
will have the advantage in Kindergarten through increased social,
academic, and skill development. Our daily curriculum explores
phonics, math, science, social studies, nature, body movement,
and Spanish. Valuable self-esteem-building while meeting
recommended academic and age-appropriate benchmarks will
be an important part of Nativity’s Program. Our Catholic identity
will plant the seeds of our religion. There will be an information
meeting on 25 January 2015 at 01:00 PM (following the school’s
Open House from 11:00 AM-01:00 PM) in the new wing which
will house the Pre-Kindergarten at Nativity School. Please call

Nativity Church is open 24/7. The Blessed Sacrament
is exposed for adoration and there is always someone
present in prayer. Won’t you join us by signing up for

your intentions share in the grace of everyone who
comes to visit. Come and experience the dramatic
presence of God in our lives. Please consider the following hours as there is no one currently assigned to

SEMINARIAN SCHOLARSHIP IN MEMORY OF
FATHER DAVENPORT
An endowed co-sponsored seminarian scholarship is to be
established with the Archdiocese for the Military Services,
USA (AMS) in memory of Father Clement A. Davenport.
This scholarship will assist AMS in creating a self-sustaining
foundation for seminarian formation – one that will supply fulltime priests for home diocese and full-time military chaplains
to help reach the population served by AMS. 1.8 million
Catholics in this nation and around the world depend on this

GLASSES, GLASSES, GLASSES
If you have misplaced any eyeglasses in the last several months
they may be in the parish office. We have lots of pairs of reading
glasses, prescription glasses, bifocals, sunglasses and some
prescription sunglasses. Any eyeglasses not claimed by the end of
December will be donated to the Lions Club.

DISCERNMENT DAY AT SAINT PATRICKS
Many Catholic men have asked themselves: Should I consider the
priesthood? “The vocation to ordained ministry is truly a treasure
that God places, from the beginning, in the hearts of some men;
those who He has chosen and called to follow Him in this special
state of life.” – Pope Francis.
From Friday, 16 January 2015 at 12:00 PM to Sunday, 18
January 2015 at 01:00 PM, St. Patrick’s Seminary and University
will be holding a Discernment Retreat. Bishop Thomas Daly,
auxiliary bishop of San Jose, will be directing the retreat. In
addition to learning about different aspects of seminarian and
priestly life, the retreatants will join the seminary community in
the celebration of the Eucharist, Liturgy of the Hours, Adoration
of the Blessed Sacrament, and the celebration of the Sacrament of
Reconciliation. They will also have the opportunity to talk to and
ask questions of priests and seminarians. Attendance does not
imply further commitment or obligation. All meals and lodging
are provided and there is no cost to attend. You must be a single
male, 21 years of older and sponsored by a priest. To register,

DAY OF DISCERNMENT

Young Believers
The 12 Days of Christmas
Although there is no historical evidence to support the
claim, there are widely-circulated stories and speculation
that during the 16th century, when English Catholics were
being persecuted by the Church of England, the song
The Twelve Days of Christmas was created with religious
symbolism to allow the study of many tenets of the faith
without fear.
According to the stories, the hidden references are:
1. My True Love (God, Our Father) gave to me ... a
partridge in a pear tree (Our Lord Jesus upon the
Cross).
2. Two turtle doves: the Old and New Testaments.
3. Three French hens: Faith, Hope, and Charity.
4. Four colly birds: the Four Gospels (or the Four
Evangelists).
5. Five golden rings: the first five books of the Bible
(the Pentateuch).
6. Six geese a’laying: the six days of the Creation.
7. Seven swans a’swimming: the seven Gifts of the Holy
Spirit (or the seven Sacraments).
8. Eight maids a’milking: the eight Beatitudes.
9. Nine ladies dancing: the nine Fruits of the Holy
Spirit.
10. Ten lords a’leaping: the Ten Commandments.
11. Eleven pipers piping: the eleven faithful Apostles.
12. Twelve drummers drumming: the twelve points of
doctrine in the Apostles’ Creed.
The “Twelve Days” of Christmas are December
26th to January 6th (the Feast of the Epiphany).
YOUR FAMILY IS A GREAT TREASURE
A family is one of God’s greatest gifts. Sometimes we
are all so busy that we forget to be thankful for our
families, and to take the time to tell each other how
much they are loved and appreciated.
1. Try to find out one new special thing about your
mother and father, that you didn’t know before. Did
your mom once win the state Science Fair? Is your dad
an expert with a yo-yo? Parents are amazing people
that have amazing things to share with you: give them a
chance to do that.
2. Find out more about your ancestors. Start with
both sets of your grandparents. Ask your parents to
tell you one special thing about each grandparent that
you didn’t know before. Maybe your grandfather was
the mayor of the town in which he was born. Maybe
your grandmother was the first woman in your family to
graduate from college. Your family is a unique treasure,
and a big part of that treasure is YOU.
