on pilgrimage with the Western Dominican Province.

ITALY Extension: Dominicans Past and Present | June 12-17
and retrace the earliest days of St. Dominic.

June 12: Bologna. Arrive in Bologna and settle in to the hotel. Overnight in Bologna.
June 13: Bologna | Florence. We start with a visit to the relics of St. Dominic at the magnificent Basilica of San
Domenico in Bologna. From Bologna, we travel to Florence and visit San Marco, where Fra Angelico, the renowned
Dominican artist, painted some of his most famous frescos. We will also visit Santa Maria Novella and Santa Maria del
Fiore, (the cathedral of St. Antoninus, the 15th century Dominican bishop of Florence). Following dinner, we will take a
leisurely walking tour through the beautiful Piazza della Signoria. Overnight in Florence.
June 14: Siena | Rome. We will visit the charming medieval city of Siena, birthplace of St. Catherine, famed
Dominican and Doctor of the Church. We will stroll the Piazza del Campo, one of Italy’s finest squares, and visit the
Basilica of St. Francis, containing the miraculous consecrated hosts that have remained intact since 1730. We will
continue on to view an incorrupt relic of St. Catherine at the Basilica of San Domenico. We then proceed to Rome.
Overnight in Rome.
June 15: Rome. We begin our stay in Rome with a visit to Vatican City and a Papal audience, pending the Pope’s
schedule. After lunch we will be given a guided tour of the Vatican Museum, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter’s Basilica.
Overnight in Rome.
June 16: Rome. Today we will visit the tomb of St. Catherine of Siena at the Basilica of Santa Maria sopra Minerva
before touring Santa Sabina, the worldwide headquarters of the Dominican Order. St. Dominic lived here for some
time, and we will have a chance to view his cell. We will continue on to visit the Pontifical University of St. Thomas
Aquinas (Angelicum), which houses the remains of Bl. Hyacinthe-Marie Cormier, who approved the formation of the
Province of the Most Holy Name of Jesus (Western Dominican Province). After this inspiring day, we will gather for a
farewell dinner, and celebrate our time together with great Italian food! Overnight in Rome.
June 17: Depart for USA. With an invigorated love of our Catholic faith and St. Dominic, pilgrims depart on flights to
the USA.

June 5: Depart for Madrid
June 6: Madrid. Free time to explore and relax. Opening Mass and welcome dinner. Overnight in Madrid.
June 7: Madrid | Caleruega. We begin with a visit to the font in which St. Dominic was baptized, then travel to
Caleruega, St. Dominic’s birthplace, and one of the oldest walled cities in Europe. Overnight in Caleruega.
June 8: Caleruega | Burgo de Osma. Day trip to Burgo de Osma to visit the stunning gothic church where St. Dominic
served as a young priest. Returning to Caleruega, we will visit the site of St. Dominic’s birth, and the crypt housing the
famous Pocito de Santo Domingo. Overnight in Caleruega.

June 9: Toulouse. We head to Toulouse where St. Dominic and his first disciples founded the Order of Preachers in 1216.
We will visit the house of Peter Seila, where St. Dominic established the first priory; the Dominican Studium; and the Church
of the Jacobins, where the relics of the great Dominican Saint and Doctor of the Church, St. Thomas Aquinas, rest. Overnight
in Toulouse.
June 10: Albi | Toulouse. Day trip to Albi, where St. Dominic famously converted the Albigensian heretics. Here we will visit
the magnificent Albi Cathedral, one of the best preserved medieval churches in Europe. Overnight in Toulouse.
June 11: Fanjeaux | Prouille | Carcassonne | Toulouse. Day trip to the picturesque towns of Fanjeaux, Prouille, and
Carcassonne – all famous preaching sites of St. Dominic. St. Dominic served as pastor of the parish in the hilltop town of
Fanjeaux.! It is famous for the "Seignadou" or Sign of God, in which St. Dominic was given a vision of a flame resting above
the church in neighboring Prouille, where he had established the first monastery of Dominican nuns. This sign was validation
of his efforts to convert the Albigensians. Carcassonne is one of the best preserved walled cities in Europe, and the site of
many triumphs for Christ won by St. Dominic. Overnight in Toulouse.
June 12: Toulouse | Depart to USA or Bologna. Travel day. Pilgrims depart on flights to the USA or to Italy.
