Take the Journey Volume 1, Issue 1 January 2012 Alberta Highland Dancing Association Inside this issue: Choreography Entries -Feb 1, 2012 The Choreography event will take place July 11, 2012 at the Frances Winspear Centre for Music. On-line registration will be available on the SDC web site February 1, 2012. No mail in entries will be accepted. Dancers must register first at the West Edmonton Mall Fantasyland Hotel prior to traveling to the Winspear Centre. At registration they will obtain their event pass for admission to the Winspear. Check-in for the Choreography event will be downtown at the Winspear Centre. Teachers will hand in their competition list and receive their choreography number at Winspear check-in. The Opening Ceremonies and the Choreography events are being held at this world renowned venue in the heart of downtown Edmonton. Competitors in the Choreography event will dance exclusively to the music of Canada’s Barra MacNeils. Our finalists in the Choreography competition will perform to the live band. www.barramacneils.com Loree Martin Vellner Choreography Competition Loree’s resume highlights a career as an acrobat, cast member in a child’s touring show, member of a concert group, professional dancer of stage and television as well as an outstanding Highland Dancer. Loree has an Honorary Doctorate for her studies in kinaesthetic awareness not only in dancers but also in artistic sport athletes. She has taught figure skating, choreographed gymnastic routines, was a diving coach and judge and named to the Alberta Diving Coaches team for the Commonwealth Development Program. For her dedication to ScotDance Canada she was awarded an honorary membership in 1998. On her retirement from active participation in 2011, she was awarded Emeritus membership status, the highest honour in our association. Volume 1, Issue 1 Page 3 SDC Qualifier Event prior to the series This event will take place on Tuesday July 10 at the Ice Palace, West Edmonton Mall. The time will be announced shortly. There will be three judges. Since this is a qualifying round similar to the Provincial Closed Selection Meets, these judges will be different from the panel judging the Canadian Championship. Three dancers from each of the six age groups will win a spot to compete in the Canadian Inter Provincial Championships being held July 13, 2012. Although no awards will be given at this qualifying event the results of each dance will be announced. Certificates will be presented to the 18 qualifiers. There will be 18 sashes for the qualifiers to wear in the Opening Ceremonies and at the banquet. On-line registration will be available for this event. Canadian Champions 2011 Marielle Lesperance, Katie Lee, Lizzie Beattie, Sarah Beth Gillis and Morgan McDougall (not pictured Bevin Wiley) Gail Danysk Sword Dance Challenge The Millennium Sword Challenge was introduced at ScotDance Canada Championship Series 2000. The organizers of SDCCS 2012 are summoning the participants to action 12 years later with the “Gail Danysk Sword Dance Challenge”. Judges’ and Advisory Committee Chair, was the secretary for our National Organization, organized three ScotDance Canada Championship Series (1980, 1994 and 2006) and arranged numerous workshops and national conferences. Gail Danysk, Emeritus ScotDance Canada, answered ScotDance Canada’s challenge on many occasions. She is a founding member of ScotDance Canada for which she received Independent Member status. She is the past SDC She was a well respected judge, teacher and examiner but never by her own admission because she is ever so humble. Those accolades are bestowed upon her by her peers. The true measure of a remarkable person! Details: This special event will take place July 12, 14 and 15th. There will be 3 groups: 7 & Under 13 Years, 13 & Under 16 Years, 16 Years and over. The venue will be the West Edmonton Mall Ice Palace. Participants will dance the championship step 3 & 1 sword dance. The competition is open to Premier Dancers. (birth date as of July 11, 2012). Eighteen swords have been donated by Scottish Imports. There will also be cash prizes. July 12—24 dancers advance in each age group July 14—6 dancers advance in each age group July 15—final 6 in each age group Millennium Sword Challenge Edmonton 2000 Kimberley Cooper is pictured with her teacher Betty Sutherland after winning the Millennium Sword Challenge. David Wilton and Erin Rose were the other Sword Challenge winners. Page 4 Take the Journey SDCCS 1992 in Winnipeg was the first year that a 9 year and under category was offered. The first ever 9 and under Canadian Champion was Erin Welk (608) of BC. Canadian Champions 1982 Lisa Nickle (ON), Ann Milne (ON), Natalie Gray (ON), Jennifer Lindsay (BC) and Mary Munro (BC) At the same event, new SOBHD Adjudicating Panel Member Natalie Quick (681) won her 3rd Canadian Championship title. Take the Journey Back 10, 20, 30 and 40 years The championship series did not exist in 1972. The Board had not approved a closed national championship for Canada. ScotDance Canada was not in existence until many years later. The high profile championship that drew dancers from across the country was the Inter-Continental Championship held in August at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. Jumping for joy in this “newspaper clip” are the 1972 Manitoba qualifiers Jennifer Paterson, Cheryl Rafter (current Vice President of ScotDance Canada) and Glenda Bergner. In 2002, city of Vancouver British Columbia, the Canadian Champions were: Colleen Rintamaki (ON), Christine Henderson (BC), Chantal Watt (ON), Stephanie Wilson (BC), Christina Maas (AB), Caitlin Wilson (BC).
