Assessment 1 … COM155… Wordpress and HTML5 video… I have been asked to keep a wordpress blog based on html 5 video elements. In this report I am going to show how I set up wordpress onto the uni scm server, how I customised my wordpress, they key features I used, showing how I created posts and show group member comments. Setting up wordpress... This week I had to set up wordpress onto the scmweb using my B code. Below is step by step screenshots on how I got wordpress to work. Firstly I followed the link provided to be brought to the main Wordpress website where I was able to download the folders I need to get started. I clicked on download wordpress, then downloaded the zip file... I was then instructed to change some of the code in the wp-config.php file... Now that I have changed the code I need to copy over wordpress onto the scm web server. I used finder...go...connect to server... then entered my details. This allowed me to copy and paste the wordpress file into the scm folder... Below is me showing the wordpress folder in the scm folder which is connected with my B code. I then install the final wordpress my using my Bcode in the url - before you insert your Bcode the webpage will not be found. Finally the following screen shots show that my bcode is now used in the URL and my wordpress blog opens up and I am able to edit all my settings. Customising wordpress and key features… When doing research on HTML5 I found that their colour scheme was orange, grey and a light blue. As my wordpress blog is a bout HTML 5 I thought it would be a good idea to use a similar colour scheme. Wordpress allows you to change the colour of heading text and backgrounds. This is what I have done… When customising a wordpress blog you are also able to add in your own background image. This is a good idea when you are setting up a business and using wordpress as your main website. After I changed the background colour to orange I changed the header text colour to a light blue. Below I have included a screen shot showing the final outcome. I really like this colour scheme, it is positive and the colours work well together. On wordpress you can also choose different themes, at the moment I am using twenty twelve as a theme but will look into downloading other themes at some stage. Adding a new page… When you first log onto wordpress an automated post and page are already created to let you see what each do and how you can edit them. I started by deleting the sample page and created my first page. This screen shot shows how I deleted the sample page and below I am going to show how I created my own page… As you can see you name your new page, I chose “Starting out my new wordpress blog…”. This will show on my page until I decide to delete and I can edit it at any time. Above is a screen shot showing the page I just created. I have circled the part of the page where you navigate to the different pages… you can add many different pages and they will show here in order of newest first. Above is a screen shot showing the edit screen when you want to change something about a post on a page. You are able to change the visibility of the post, e.g if you want only group members to view the post or can everybody view it. After making my first page, I decided to try my first post, below is a screen shot showing that I managed this… Posts on wordpress are placed on the “home” page. This is what people will see once they enter my site, posts will be shown from most recent first. Within the dashboard section of wordpress you are also able to add media to your site. At this moment I do not have any media I wish to upload but now I know how to when I need to. I will probably be adding images of html 5 video examples. I can also create different libarys for the different content I will be uploading. General settings… Being able to manage a website is very important so wordpress give you access to different setting options. On the general settings you are able to chose your own tag line, change how the date appears and who can become a member to your page. There are other settings but these are the most frequent ones to use. With wordpress you are also able to manage the users, the above screen shot shows you that I am the admin for my page, this means I am in full control of what is posted on my page and what can be removed. You are also able to add other group memebers if you wish to hold a group blog. To the right is a screen shot of me updating my bio on wordpress, this will be shown on my home page. It is important that people know who I am and what I’m about. This way they will come back to view my blog. Wordpress allows you to use RSS feeds as well, so once I set up an RSS feed for my public uni work I will add it on here so people will get my updates. Obviously when you have a blog you would like people to be able to comment under your posts, and you would also like to be able to comment on other peoples blogs. Our class group have made a group facebook page where we have sent our links to our wordpress blogs. I will be showing how I have commented on other people’s blog posts. Above is a screen shot showing that I am leaving a comment on Johnny’s recent test post… And below is showing the form that you need to fill out when commenting on a post on someones blog… You are also able to control what comments will be posted and have the ability to remove any comments you no longer want to be there. Adding plugins… Finally I am looking at plugins. There are many pliugins that you can choose from in wordpress and I have decided to look at a live chat plug in for my blog. This would allow people who are reading my blog to ask me questions without having to leave a comment everytime. Unfortuanlly I could not get this to work at this time but it is something I can look into at a later date. I have installed a new theme which allows me to add my facebook url so people can follow me on the up to do social network systems. I have finally finished setting up my wordpress, I am happy with the progress I have made. I know wordpress has the ability to do a lot more but for what I need my blog to do I have achieved the best. Now I am going to concentrate on adding content to my blog about html 5 video. I will show a screen shot of my fianl blog outcome. With my new theme I was able to have a proper header for my word press and a better layout for the content. As you can see this is a clean and simple wordpress set up which I feel works really well. From this assignmnet I now know how to set up wordpress and I honestly think I will continue blogging on wordpress. I may not have got my video captions working but I have still learnt a lot from this assignmnet.
