MESSAGE from the CEO

G
reetings from all of us at Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia. The months have passed by incredibly
fast and we’re already into the second half of 2013. But as the year draws to a close, we will
celebrate the arrival of a new product for Mitsubishi in Malaysia.
You would have seen the all-new Mitsubishi Attrage sedan on the cover. To be launched
soon, the Attrage sedan takes all that is good about the Mirage compact car - eco friendliness and
outstanding fuel efficiency - and blends it with a spacious and stylish sedan body.
The Attrage truly offers the best of both worlds - good space for the family and 21 km/l fuel economy
that’s the best in the market. We believe that it is a sound proposition for practical and increasingly eco
conscious Malaysians.
MMM recently organised a media test drive in Thailand, where the Attrage is made alongside the
Mirage. 19 media took part in the event in Khao Yai, and most had good things to say about the Attrage.
You can read a review by Paultan.org on page 8-9.
Fuel efficiency is a big priority at Mitsubishi Motors, and we are happy to have been awarded two
category wins in the annual Asian Auto Fuel Efficiency Awards. The Mirage and Pajero Sport VGT topped
the Compact City Cars and Premium
SUVs categories respectively.
On the other end of the scale, from fuel
efficiency to racing, we also did well at
the 2013 Pikes Peak International Hill
Climb event in Colorado, USA.
In the event, famous for its difficulty
and danger, the Mitsubishi Motors team
of Hiroshi Masuoka and Greg Tracy
finished second and third in the Electric
Division driving the battery powered MiEV
Evolution II race car. The good result
proves the reliability of Mitsubishi’s EV
technology used in the production i-MiEV.
Look forward to the launch of the Attrage and enjoy this issue of Evolution.
Happy motoring!

EON Auto Mart, JM Auto Gallery and
Jimisar Autotrade Buka Puasa Gatherings
I
n the holy fasting month of Ramadan, Mitsubishi
dealerships EON Auto Mart, JM Auto Gallery
and Jimisar Autotrade organised buka puasa
gatherings for orphans as part of their corporate
social responsibility (CSR) activities.
In Glenmarie, Shah Alam, EON Auto Mart had
a majlis berbuka puasa with children from Rumah
Anak Yatim Nurkaseh Bistari Segambut, where 30
orphans aged from 4 to 18 years old attended.
Held at EON Auto Mart’s showroom, the event
was also attended by Tetsuya Oda, CEO of MMM,
as well as the management and staff of MMM and
EON Auto Mart. Members of the Triton Tuners Club
and Lancer GT Club also made their presence felt.
The children were treated to a spread of
delicious food to break fast, followed by a Maghrib
congregational prayer in the showroom. Before the
night ended, the smiling children were given special
tokens and duit raya.
Up north in Alor Setar, Mitsubishi dealer JM
Auto Gallery held a buka puasa gathering that was
attended by 80 orphans and people with special
needs from various families.
Over in Kuching, Jimisar Autotrade organised
a buka puasa event for the orphans from Lembaga
Kebajikan Anak-Anak Yatim Sarawak. 150 children
from age 7 to 18 broke fast at Jimisar Autotrade’s
Kuching 3S showroom.
The simple but lively gathering saw the kids
tuck into a variety of sumptuous juadah buka
puasa. Present with the children were Datin Wong
Abayah Ilam, Chairman of Ismaco-Jimisar Group of
Companies, Mariana binti Dato’ Ismail, Managing
Director, Suziana binti Dato’ Ismail, Director of
Finance, Rudy bin Dato’ Ismail, Executive Director
and top management. After the meal, the children
received duit raya from the management.
Ramadan is a month of reflection and sharing
with those who are less fortunate, and these buka
puasa events do their little part in bringing cheer to
children who do not get to celebrate Hari Raya with
their loved ones.

All-new Mitsubishi Attrage
launching this year
Malaysia’s most fuel-efficient sedan is now open for booking
M
itsubishi Motors Malaysia has
announced the impending arrival of
the all-new Mitsubishi Attrage. The
new sedan is now open for booking
at Mitsubishi showrooms nationwide ahead of its
official launch in November.
“With combined fuel consumption of 21 km/l,
the new Mitsubishi Attrage is Malaysia’s most
fuel efficient sedan thanks to the aerodynamics
of the vehicle (CO= 0.29) without compromising
driving pleasure. It is a stylish and spacious
sedan that is a practical and value for money
choice in the B-segment,” said Tetsuya Oda, CEO
of Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia.
Launched in Thailand in July this year, the
Attrage, which enjoys eco-car status from the
Thai government, has received overwhelming
response from the market. The sedan is produced
at Mitsubishi’s factory in Laem Chabang,
Thailand. The name ‘Attrage’ is derived from the
word ‘attractive’.
Powered by a modern 1.2-litre three-cylinder
MIVEC engine with 80 PS of power and 106
Nm of torque, the Attrage is engineered for
exceptional efficiency. Coupled with a low
kerb weight of just 915 kg, the Attrage delivers
more than enough power for everyday use. The
sedan is also capable of 21 km/l fuel economy
(In-house measurement data based on New
European Driving Cycle (NEDC). Actual range
and fuel consumption may vary depending on
driving patterns.
The Mitsubishi Attrage is an easy handling
sedan that fits perfectly in the city with excellent
manoeuvrability and a class leading turning
radius of 4.8 metres, the smallest turning radius
in its class.
The Attrage will be available here in four
variants. The range starts off with the five-speed
manual transmission GL. Those opting for the
smooth INVECS-III CVT automatic transmission
will be able to choose between GL, GS and the
range topping SE specs.
All variants come with safety features such as
dual airbags and ABS with EBD. GS spec adds
on equipment such as keyless entry with push
start button, leather wrapped steering wheel and
gear knob, and digital automatic air conditioning.
The SE stands out further with a sporty body
kit, LED daytime running lights, security window
film, leather seats and a 2-DIN touch screen
audio unit with USB, AUX-in and reverse camera.
Introductory prices starts from RM 59,000
on-the-road without insurance. Imported from
Thailand, the Attrage comes with a warranty of 3
years or 100,000 km, whichever comes first. The
first 1,000 bookings will receive a Garmin GPS

Mitsubishi Owners Community Drive to Melaka
M
itsubishi Motors Malaysia recently organised the Mitsubishi Owners Community
Drive to Puteri Resort, Melaka. Besides the objective of bringing together and
uniting Mitsubishi owners, the event saw participants join in MMM’s corporate
social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
Attended by 30 customers, the 39-vehicle convoy of various Mitsubishi models was
flagged off at KGPA Golf Club in Damansara. A scenic pit stop at the Raja Melewar Replica
Palace plus a museum visit gave participants a glimpse at the life of old world royals.
The colourful convoy then proceeded to Puteri Resort in the historical state of Melaka, the
“base camp” for the night. The by now hungry group wasted no time and filled their tummies
with lunch before enjoying a full day of fun, games and outdoor activities. Everyone had a
splashing time, literally!
Prizes and certificates were given out to participants at the end of the day. Also joining
in the fun were children from a local orphanage. MMM, represented by CEO Tetsuya Oda,
contributed RM5,000 to the Lembaga Pengurusan Anak Yatim Dan Miskin Islam.
Look out for the next Community Drive!

MEDIA REVIEW
By Jonathan James Tan of Paultan.org
Mitsubishi Attrage tried out on a Thai track
W
hen we first learnt that the Mitsubishi
Mirage‘s sedan-bodied counterpart
was going to be called the Attrage, we
were rather amused, to say the least.
Knowing Japan’s unique way with English words,
the reflex assumption was that the name was a
portmanteau of the words ‘attractive’ and ‘Mirage.’
As it turned out, we were right – according to
Mitsubishi, it was indeed contrived based on that
complimentary adjective, and although no official
mention was made of the other contributing word,
I think we can safely rule out ‘rage’ and ‘age,’ don’t
you?
With its Thai launch on the horizon, we leapt
across the northern border in late June to join the
international media test drive event, where we had
a chance to briefly try the new Mitsubishi Attrage out
on a race circuit.
The Concept G4 sedan, which the Tokyo-headquartered carmaker uncovered at the Bangkok show
in March, couldn’t have been a more accurate crystal ball to gaze into. Save for the futuristic internals
of the head and tail lamps and all that blue sparkle,
the road-going Mitsubishi Attrage has stayed pretty
loyal to the concept.
Built alongside the Mirage at the Laem Chabang Industrial Estate in the Thai province of
Chonburi, the B-segment sedan, like its five-door
sibling, holds eco-car status in the Kingdom,
which lends itself to benefits where taxes are
concerned.
This isn’t all that easy to achieve – what’s
needed is a fuel consumption figure of 20 km per
litre or better, Euro 4 compliancy, a local production investment of over five billion baht and a
manufacturing rate in excess of 100,000 units
8
annually after the fifth year of production.
Study the vehicle in more depth and you’ll see
why it hasn’t simply been called the ‘Mirage Sedan’
– sure, more than a couple of the Attrage’s design
elements are quintessentially Mirage, but it’s not
until you line them both up that you realise just how
much they differ.
For a start, the new car eschews the Mirage’s
simpler and daintier face in favour of a little more
presence and pizzazz. There’s a prominent tripleslatted chrome grille within which the Mitsubishi
badge sits, more chiselled headlamps, bonnet
creases, a wider and more angular lower intake as
well as claw-shaped fog lamp housings.
A quick dimension comparison divulges more
disparity than you’d expect – the Attrage measures 4,245 mm long, 1,670 mm wide and 1,515
mm tall (Mirage 3,710 x 1,665 x 1,500), and
its wheelbase is actually a whole 100 mm longer
than the hatch’s 2,450, bringing with it more
legroom in the back.
Also upped are the front and rear track widths
(both +15 mm) as well as ground clearance (+10
mm). There’s a 42-litre fuel tank (Mirage 35), and
the turning circle is 0.4 metres poorer than the
hatch’s 4.4. Obviously, boot space is up. There’s
450 litres of it – almost double the Mirage’s 235
litres.
Thanks to extensive use of high-tensile steel in
its body, the Attrage weighs between 885 and 930
kg (Mirage 825-850), depending on the variant.
The lightness contributes towards a claimed fuel
consumption figure of 22 km per litre on the New
European Driving Cycle.
Underneath, it’s all a mirage – 78 PS/100 Nm
1.2 litre 3A92 MIVEC twin-cam three-cylinder
unit, five-speed manual or INVECS-III CVT, electric power steering, front discs/MacPherson struts
and rear drums/torsion beam – you’ve heard it all
before. Same cockpit too, although the rear bench
gets a central armrest with two cupholders.
The Bonanza International Speedway in Khao Yai
is quite a short track, with considerable elevation
and potential for high speeds, but we didn’t get to
blaze the whole length of it uninhibited – cones were
placed in certain sections of the circuit, creating stations for slalom, lane change and handling tests that
we had to progress through.
So it was that I found myself in the CVTequipped version, lining up for the first slalom.
The Attrage leaps off the line eagerly and smoothly
enough. The rapidly-rising engine note, although
not harsh, does make its presence felt quite
strongly in the cabin when you give it the beans.
Snaking the car through those cones uncovered a
considerable degree of body roll, albeit civilised
and kept in check.
The steering, although above average in terms
MEDIA REVIEW
of response, is very light and could offer much
more feel and feedback, but then again I was
driving a B-segment runabout on a race track,
which is like taking the tiger out of the (urban)
jungle, so to speak.
Out of the slalom and we pick up speed. The
rev-happy engine, coupled with the CVT, exhibit
the characteristic ‘rubber-band’ trait to its fullest,
so I push the gear lever down to S. Now the gearbox pretends it’s a stepped automatic, and I’m
allowed into the further end of the rev range. Peak
power resides at a heady 6,000 rpm; peak torque
at 4,000 rpm, so you do have to find some spin
if you want some grin.
The grin gradually comes, as you learn to
carry more speed into the corners in a bid to keep
the motor on the boil and conserve whatever little
momentum you have. This can be a strangely fun
activity only afforded by little-engined cars like this,
even though you know they were designed for the
low-speed, stop-go motions of the urban environment.
I power through the lane change station and
tackle the curves ahead with little drama. Because
there isn’t much weight in the nose (or indeed anywhere else), directional changes can be effected
easily and quickly. I won’t pretend the Attrage
packs much in the way of sporting intentions, but
doesn’t it hang on determinedly to those corners!
The final hairpin before the main straight is a
rather steep climb, and it was this that the Attrage
found most challenging. The engine, as you’d
expect in such a situation, provides more shout
than shove – but it really isn’t bad for a little threecylinder. You still get to the top of the hill – only not
so quickly.
Generally the Attrage is smooth and easy
to drive. Contributing to this are the seamless
operation of the CVT, the featherweight steering
that’s loath to communicate vibrations of any
sort, and good all-round visibility – not to mention cabin airiness – afforded by a low window
line and considerably thin pillars (by today’s
standards).
Put simply, it’s a B-segment sedan with all the
city driving qualities – nippiness, fuel efficiency
and ease of use – of an A-segmenter.
Issue 2 2013
In the Land of Smiles, the Mitsubishi Attrage
has direct eco-car rivals in the forms of the 1.3
litre four-cylinder-engined Toyota Vios (not the new
car) and the 1.2 litre three-cylinder-engined Nissan Almera. Unfortunately for it, the playing field at
home won’t be so level, what with our Vios, Almera
and City all wielding more powerful 1.5 litre fourcylinder engines.
But if it could undercut the Almera in price, it
could aim for a market half a segment lower, and
while it won’t come anywhere near our national
carmakers’ smaller offerings, the Attrage would
then be the least expensive (and smallest) import sedan on sale in Malaysia when it arrives
towards the end of this year.

T
he eco minded and fuel efficient Mitsubishi
Mirage is now available in a sporty flavour

that one does not drive like
a flat-footed Sasquatch!
But what about trying to

A body conscious

capable of dragging
its weighty haul – that

of the cabin, this one’s
deceptively spacious, and
ambient road noise was

And we’re big fans of the

we’d like to make. Simply
put, a sensational ride is a
sensational ride in any size. Up and down the
hill in the Mirage sure
seems less taxing than
any day on the LDP.

Mitsubishi
duo awarded
Mirage and Pajero Sport win at the
Asian Auto Fuel Efficiency Awards
W
inning awards has become a yearly affair for Mitsubishi
Motors Malaysia. This time around, monthly car magazine
Asian Auto has awarded two category wins in its annual
Asian Auto Fuel Efficiency Awards to Mitsubishi. The Mirage
and the Pajero Sport VGT both claimed first prize in the Compact City Cars
and Premium SUVs categories, respectively.
The Mirage, launched here in November 2012, was developed on the
concept of ‘compact’, ‘affordability’ and ‘high fuel efficiency’. With focus
on fuel efficiency and eco-friendliness, the 1.2-litre Mirage is capable of
an impressive 21 km per litre as measured in the New European Driving
Cycle (NEDC).
The Pajero Sport VGT successfully defended its first place from last
year’s awards. The SUV impressed the judges by being “large, spacious,
hardy and equipped with modern diesel engines”. Since arriving on the
scene in 2009, the seven-seater Pajero Sport SUV – which counts space,
ride comfort, robustness, economy and a Dakar Rally heritage as its
strengths – has been a serial winner.
The organizers of the Asian Auto Fuel Efficiency Awards claim that the
awards is the first of its kind in Malaysia and the region. It is also billed
as the only automotive award that encourages car manufacturers to
offer better quality vehicles with the latest engineering and technology
that promotes fuel efficiency and lower emissions.
CEO of MMM Mr. Tetsuya Oda receiving first prize award for the Mirage
and Pajero Sports from the Editor of Asian Auto, Mr. Daniel Fernandez

dominates the Pikes Peak podium
RACING TO THE PEAK
The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb
competition is a time trial event for automobiles and motorcycles held annually at
Colorado Springs, Colorado around Independence Day weekend that attracts over
150 competitors every year.
T

and Greg Tracy placed second and third
respectively in the Pikes Peak International
Hill Climb’s Electric Division held in June.
Masuoka is a double Dakar Rally winner while Tracy
is a former Pikes Peak overall motorcycle champion.
Both drove the battery powered Mitsubishi MiEV
Evolution II race car, an improved version of last
year’s machine. Packed with 536 bhp from four
motors, the electric race car is equipped with Super
All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) all-wheel drive technology
and carbon fibre bodywork.
