OPENING GALA £11 full / £9 concs Join us to celebrate the opening of the 20th edition of ¡Viva! with the UK premiere of Días de vinilo (Days of Vinyl), a contemporary comedic tale of friendship and love with a fabulous sixties soundtrack. It’s the debut feature of director Gabriel Nesci, who will be here to introduce the film. Following the film join us as we celebrate the start of the festival in the café bar with post-screening drinks. Gala tickets are limited, please book early to avoid disappointment. FRI 7, SUN 9 & WED 19 MAR Días de vinilo (PG) UK PREMIERE (Days of Vinyl) Dir Gabriel Nesci / AR CO 2012 / 105 mins Gastón Pauls, Fernán Mirás, Ignacio Toselli, Rafael Spregelburd, Inés Efron, Leonardo Sbaraglia Damian, Luciano, Facundo and Marcelo have been best buddies since childhood, when their shared love of music on vinyl began, but as they enter their thirties new developments test the bond of friendship. Damian (Pauls) is trying to get over his ex, and struggling to propose a script to satisfy actor Leonardo Sbaraglia, who plays a comically capricious version of himself. Meanwhile radio announcer Luciano (Mirás) also has girlfriend trouble as he struggles to contain his jealousy. And even Facundo (Spregelburd), who is about to marry, finds the course of true love never runs smoothly. Marcelo (Toselli) leads a Beatles tribute band that he swears no romantic relationship will ever break up, that is until he meets someone uncannily suitable. This charming debut feature film will leave you with a warm glow as the comedy unfolds to a soundtrack drawn from the swinging sixties. EVENT We are pleased to welcome Gabriel Nesci to present his film at the opening gala, and for a Q&A following the screening on Sun 9 Mar. 4 5 For full film and event details and updates visit vivafilmfestival.com FILMS and events SAT 8 & THU 13 MAR SAT 8 MAR SAT 8 & WED 12 MAR (The Cleaner) (Bad Hair) (The Fantastic World of Juan Orol) Walking Tour ¡Hola Manchester! El Limpiador (12A) El Fantástico mundo de Juan Orol (15) SUN 9 MAR, 11:00 – 12:30 Dir Adrián Saba / PE 2012 / 96 mins Adrian du Bois, Víctor Prada Dir Mariana Rondón / VE 2013 / 93 mins Samuel Lange Zambrano, Samantha Castillo, Nelly Ramos, Beto Benites Dir Sebastian del Amo / MX 2012 / 90 mins Roberto Sosa, Ximena Gonzalez-Rubio, Karin Burnett, Gabriela de la Garza, Ariadna Perez Mijares, Jesús Ochoa, Roger Cudney £7 full / £6 concs Meet at Cornerhouse Box Office. Forensic cleaner Eusebio (Prada) travels across the semi-deserted city of Lima, Peru, after a deadly outbreak of a global plague, sterilising areas where the latest victims have died. When he becomes responsible for a traumatised eight-year-old boy, his isolated existence is gradually transformed through a growing sense of compassion and tenderness. A poignant portrait of the battle between Marta (Castillo), a struggling, grieving single mother, and Junior (Zambrano), her nine-year-old mixed race son, over his sense of identity. The conflict is condensed into a fight over Junior’s obsession with straightening his hair, which his bigoted mother fears is an indication of his burgeoning sexuality. Mexican B-movie master Juan Orol (Sosa) was named the ‘Involuntary Surrealist’ because he made films that were so bad they were good; shoddy, improvised, vulgar... and box office hits! As his career advanced in parallel with the rise of William Jennings (Cudney), the magnate who monopolised the Mexican film industry, Orol became the King of the B-movie in Mexico’s Golden Age of national cinema. EVENT We are pleased to welcome Mariana Rondón for a Q&A following the screening on Sat 8 Mar. Picking up multiple awards in its home country, this film pays homage to cinematic stereotypes via the larger-thanlife director who best embodied them, while simultaneously depicting the evolution of film from grainy silent cinema through to glorious Technicolor. Manchester guide Jean Bailo will lead a special walking tour exploring connections between Manchester and Spain in intermediate-level Spanish. Learn about Emmeline Pankhurst’s Spanish counterpart, Manchester Town Hall’s tribute to the Civil War’s International Brigade, the curvy bridge designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava Valls, and Manchester’s love affair with Spanish food and fashion. Saba’s debut feature film won the New Director’s Award at the prestigious San Sebastian International Film Festival in 2012 and was Peru’s submission for the Academy Awards Foreign Language Category 2014. 6 Pelo malo (15) UK PREMIERE With thanks to Axiom Films. As the clips roll on, look out for many films shown at Cornerhouse over the years! EVENT See page 14 for details of our One Hour Intro to complement the screening of Con la pata quebrada on Tue 18 Mar. 8 SUN 9 & FRI 14 MAR Pensé que iba a haber una fiesta (15) UK PREMIERE (I Thought It Was A Party) Dir Victoria Galardi / AR ES 2012 / 84 mins Elena Anaya, Valeria Bertuccelli, Fernán Mirás, Esteban Bigliardi Starring familiar faces Elena Anaya (La Piel que habito, 2011) and Valeria Bertuccelli (XXY, 2007), director Galardi describes her third feature as a study of the “fragility of human relationships”. The film deals with the universal dilemma posed by a woman’s desire for her close friend’s ex, and the emotional consequences of acting on this attraction. Set in a leafy suburb of Buenos Aires, the simple story is perfectly played out by the talented cast and crew with wonderful attention to detail. MON 10 & WED 19 MAR Sin otoño, sin primavera (18) UK PREMIERE (No Autumn, No Spring) Dir Iván Mora Manzano / EC CO FR 2012 / 115 mins Enzo Macchiavello, Andres Troya Holst, Paola Baldion, Alejandro Fajardo, Lucía Moscoso, Andrea Espinoza, Angela Peñaherrera, Paulina Obrist, Andrés Crespo Manzano’s debut feature film is an ambitious portrait of Guayaquil’s erratic, disenchanted middle-class youth. A punk ballad told from the point of view of nine characters through non-linear stories that sometimes interconnect and at other times share a sort of emotional resonance. The pieces gradually connect together to form a picture of a generation of privileged youth each enacting their own form of rebellion against expectations. MON 10 MAR La Partida (18) UK PREMIERE (The Last Match) Dir Antonio Hens / CU ES 2013 / 96 mins Milton García, Reinier Díaz, Luis Alberto García, Mirta Ibarra, Toni Cantó Spanish director Hens draws out excellent performances from novice actors García and Díaz, ably supported by Mirta Ibarra, veteran Cuban actress and widow of Tomás Gutiérrez Alea (Fresa y chocolate, 1993 and Guantanamera, 1995). Cuba is a difficult place to be young and gay. When Reinier (Díaz), teen rent boy as well as husband and father, shares more than just a passion for football with his best friend Yosvani (García), the consequences of poverty and desire complicate their lives with tragic results. TUE 11 & SAT 15 MAR TUE 11 & MON 17 MAR Dir Andrea Esteban / ES GE GB 2012 / 74 mins (Chasing Fireflies) Born Naked (MLB) (12A) This stylish documentary examines questions of gender, sexuality, and identity for young lesbians in three of the most vibrant European cities, Madrid, London and Berlin. An impressive directorial debut from Esteban and her young co-writers, the edgy, personal approach offers a fascinating insight into the attitudes and experiences of this new generation, discovering a wealth of creative and inspirational achievements. Cazando luciérnagas (U) UK PREMIERE Dir Roberto Flores Prieto / CO 2012 / 106 mins Marlon Moreno, Valentina Abril This directorial debut from Colombian director Flores Prieto is an exquisitely beautiful piece about the reawakening of a man’s emotions. In charge of an abandoned salt mine on the remote Caribbean coast, the introverted Manrique (Moreno) seems content to live in almost complete isolation from the rest of humanity. His solitary routine is broken, however, by the appearance of a friendly dog that likes to chase fireflies, and then the arrival of his estranged thirteen-year-old daughter Valeria (Abril). EVENT We are pleased to welcome Roberto Flores Prieto for a Q&A following the screening on Tue 11 Mar. 9 For full film and event details and updates visit vivafilmfestival.com FILMS and events WED 12 & THU 20 MAR Temporal (15) UK PREMIERE WED 12 MAR, 17:15 – 18:15 One Hour Intro (Temporary) Mexican Popular Cinema Dir Catxo / ES 2013 / 84 mins Melanie Olivares, Adrián Lastra, Nuria Mencía, Maggie Civantos, Alfonso Torregrosa, Violeta Pérez, Luis Callejo £4 full / £3 concs Black humour pervades this day in the life of the unemployed, underemployed, and unhappy employees of a Madrid temping agency. Cleaners, cold-callers, call centre operatives, office workers, trainees and market research campaigners all struggle through their day, clinging to their jobs in a cold climate of economic decline. To complement this year’s screening of El Fantástico mundo de Juan Orol, a spectacular bio-picture that covers the barely believable career of the legendary maverick film director, this introductory talk will explore the wonderful world of popular Mexican cinema. Whilst covering stars such as Dolores del Rio, Emilio Fernández and Cantinflas, the wrestling hybrids of Santo, el Enmascarado de Plata, and the exploitation epics of Rene Cardona Jnr.; the session will also consider the centrality of film studios, such as the legendary Estudios Churubusco, in facilitating the production line of Mexico’s particularly distinctive take on genre films. Led by Andy Willis, Reader in Film Studies at the University of Salford. For full El Fantástico mundo de Juan Orol synopsis see page 7. 10 THU 13 & SUN 16 MAR THU 13 & FRI 14 MAR Dir Asier Altuna / ES 2011 / 90 mins Basque wEngST Dir Marco Berger / AR 2013 / 102 mins Manuel Vignau, Mateo Chiarino This breath-taking documentary is a journey through improvised poetry and the unique musical cultural heritage of the Basque Country. A bertsolari is an improviser of verse sung in the Basque language, Euskara. An austerely aesthetic art form that surprises in this era of spectacle and special effects, it continues to enthral people from all generations and the remarkable championship finals draw an audience of many thousands. ¡Viva! veteran Altuna (Aupa Etxebeste!, 2006) echoed the methods of his subject matter, following his intuition to create a very personal piece, stating with pride “I feel like I have stood in front of a microphone and I have sung from the heart.” When Martín (Chiarino) seeks work at Eugenio’s (Vignau) country house the estranged childhood friends enter into a charged atmosphere of unarticulated desire, which stretches over the long, hot summer. Talented Argentine director Berger uses a melancholy score and artfully framed shots to heighten the emotional barriers between the two characters, as the tension rises. bertsolari (U) Hawaii (15) UK PREMIERE FRI 14 MAR 24 cines por segundo: Sábanas blancas (U) UK PREMIERE (Blank Canvas) Dir Mariela Artiles / ES 2013 / 61 mins After 20 years living and working here in the North West of England, Artiles returned to Spain and made her first feature length film, which expores the fragile state of her country’s contemporary film industry. This engaging documentary features interviews with both Spanish filmgoers and industry professionals, including ¡Viva! favourites Carlos Saura, Álex de la Iglesia, Jaume Balagueró and Nacho Vigalondo, as they discuss what has gone before, what is happening now, and what the future might hold for el cine español. ACCOMPANIED BY La Gran desilusión (The Grand Dis-illusion) (CTBA) Dir Pedro González Kuhn / ES 2013 / 10 mins On 1 September 2012 the Spanish VAT rate on culture rocketed from 8% to 21%, the highest in Europe, with a devastating effect for many workers in this sector. EVENT We are pleased to welcome Mariela Artiles for a Q&A following the screening on Fri 14 Mar. 11 For full film and event details and updates visit vivafilmfestival.com FILMS and events SAT 15 MAR, 10:30 – 13:30 ADULT STUDY MORNING Los Últimos días (15) £8.50 full / £6.50 concs Carmen Herrero and Ana Valbuena present our ever-popular study session for adult Spanish language learners. Following an introduction in Spanish and a full screening of Los Últimos días, attendees will practise their Spanish language skills through discussing topics such as: Barcelona; city life; family relationships; love; science-fiction; past and future; illnesses; visions of cities and transnational cinemas. Intermediate level Spanish recommended. For full Los Últimos días synopsis, see page 13. SAT 15 & FRI 21 MAR Las Brujas de Zugarramurdi (18) UK PREMIERE (Witching and Bitching) Dir Álex de la Iglesia / ES FR 2013 / 104 mins Mario Casas, Hugo Silva, Carmen Maura, Carolina Bang, Santiago Segura, Carlos Areces, Javier Botet Perhaps his most outrageous film to date, de la Iglesia takes his unique brand of comic horror to new heights, or perhaps depths, in this twisted battle of the sexes where men are fools and women are witches. On the run from an armed robbery fiasco slap bang in the centre of Madrid’s Puerta del Sol, Antonio (Casas), José (Silva) and his young son flee north. On entering the Basque village of Zugarramurdi, they stray into the territory of a powerful coven of witches, led by the sophisticated yet devilish Graciana (Maura), and their days seem certain to be numbered as the film escalates toward a comically grotesque finale – you have been warned! SAT 15 MAR SUN 16 & WED 19 MAR SUN 16 & THU 20 MAR (The Golden Dream) Los Golfos (CTBA) (The Last Days) La Jaula de oro (15) Dir Diego Quemada-Díez / MX ES 2013 / 110 mins Brandon López, Rodolfo Domínguez, Karen Martínez, Carlos Chajon This engaging drama tells the tragic tale of a group of teenagers who flee Guatemala through Mexico in pursuit of the American Dream. Racial tensions come to the fore when Chauk (Domínguez), a Tzotzil Indian who is also trying to cross the border, joins the group. Along the way the teenagers are tested by traumatic encounters, and before long they form an unshakable bond. With thanks to Peccadillo Pictures. ¡Viva! Matinee Classic (The Delinquents) Dir Carlos Saura / ES 1960 / 88 mins Manuel Zarzo, Luis Marín, Óscar Cruz, Juanjo Losada, María Mayer, Ramón Rubio, Rafael Vargas A rare chance to see Saura’s directorial debut feature, one of the cornerstones of Spanish cinema. Six juvenile delinquents eking out a living in a slum suburb of Madrid support Juan’s (Cruz) bid to become a bullfighter, but the odds are against these members of a marginalised and disaffected generation of young people. After a decade of incessant patriotism and banal comedies, Carlos Saura burst onto the Spanish cinematic scene with this controversial debut. Finished in 1959, and nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1960, the film was not released until 1962 thanks to a bitter battle with the Spanish film censors. EVENT The screening on Wed 19 Mar will be followed by a free, informal discussion led by Carmen Herrero, Principal Lecturer in Hispanic Studies at Manchester Metropolitan University. 12 Los Últimos días (15) Dir David Pastor & Àlex Pastor / ES 2013 / 100 mins Quim Gutiérrez, José Coronado, Marta Etura, Leticia Dolera This slick disaster movie, written and directed by the Catalan Pastor brothers, boasts excellent special effects and brilliant performances from Gutiérrez (Primos, 2011 and azuloscurocasinegro, 2006) and Coronado (Lobo, 2006), and an interesting take on the post-apocalypse theme. In 2013 a mysterious epidemic spreads across the planet. Humanity develops an irrational fear of open spaces that leads to instant death. Soon, the world’s remaining population is trapped inside buildings. As Barcelona descends into chaos, Marc (Gutiérrez) embarks on a quest to find his missing girlfriend, without ever setting foot outside. SUN 16 & SAT 22 MAR Mar del Plata (12A) UK PREMIERE Dir Ionathan Klajman & Sebastián Dietsch / AR 2012 / 82 mins Pablo G. Pérez, Gabriel Zayat, Pablo Caramelo, Lorena Damonte A delightfully quirky comedy, and an assured directorial debut, this filmmaking duo is sure to make you giggle. Now in their 30s, Joaquin and David have been friends long enough to bicker childishly without destroying their relationship. Each experiencing their own individual crises, they escape to the seaside town of Mar del Plata to get away from it all. But the mini break doesn’t quite go to plan when they bump into an ex-girlfriend and her pompously successful husband... If you’re learning Spanish and looking to practise your language skills, see page 12 for information about our Adult Study Morning on Sat 15 Mar. 13 For full film and event details and updates visit vivafilmfestival.com FILMS and events MON 17 & SUN 23 MAR El Medico: The Cubaton Story (15) Dir Daniel Fridell / CU ES 2011 / 85 mins Swedish director Fridell documents the story of Raynier, the eponymous El Medico, a young Cuban torn between his duty as a trained doctor and his desire to succeed as a rap artist. Battling for his loyalty are his commercially-driven European producer Michel and his patriotic mother, who is determined that her son follow the ideals of the Revolution by dedicating his career to Cuba’s people. TUE 18 MAR, 17:15 – 18:15 TUE 18, SAT 22 & SUN 23 WICKED Women in Spanish Cinema (Iguana Stew) One Hour Intro £4 full / £3 concs To complement this year’s screening of Con la pata quebrada, this introductory talk will explore how Spanish cinema has responded to the changing status of women in Spanish society since the transition to democracy. This session will concentrate on the representations of ‘bad’ women, focusing on films, genres and stars that criticize or defy female models created and shaped by patriarchal culture and historical, social and cultural vicissitudes. Led by Carmen Herrero, Principal Lecturer in Hispanic Studies at Manchester Metropolitan University. For full Con la pata quebrada synopsis, see page 8. 14 Ni un hombre más (18) UK PREMIERE Dir Martín Salinas / AR 2012 / 83 mins Valeria Bertuccelli, Martín Piroyansky, Luis Ziembrowski, Mariela Vitale, Juan Minujín Veteran screenwriter and producer Salinas (Nicotina, 2003) makes an assured debut as a feature film director. Charly (Piroyansky) was abandoned at birth in a convent in the remote tropical region of Iguazú, Argentina. Now a young man, he busies himself with the running of a country guesthouse and his iguana recipes, until his mundane life is turned upside down by a series of unexpected guests. A very funny black comedy, with some delightfully farcical plot twists that ensure greed entangles the characters as tightly as a jungle vine. Please see vivafilmfestival.com for our interview with the director. FRI 21 & SAT 22 MAR La Pasión de Michelangelo (12A) UK PREMIERE (The Passion of Michelangelo) Dir Esteban Larraín / CL FR AR 2012 / 97 mins Sebastián Ayala, Claudia Celedón, Patricio Contreras, Roberto Farías, Catalina Saavedra, Alejandro Sieveking Set in 1983, during a period of economic crisis and social unrest under the Pinochet dictatorship, Larraín’s political drama tells the tale of 14-year-old Miguel Angel, thrust into the limelight by his alleged direct communication with the Virgin Mary. In a fragile and conflicted country, everyone is out to glean some benefit from this ‘miracle’, as the vulnerable boy at the centre of the storm is raised ever higher before the inevitable fall...
