It was a night to let loose, have fun, and ;inally take part in this iconic high school moment after months of anticipation. Rachael Cooke, a junior, commented, “Despite a few issues, I really had an awesome time.” For many female juniors, feeling beautiful in an elegant dress and creative hairstyle was the most exciting part of the night. For others, showing off incredible dance moves, rolling up in luxurious limos, Photo taken by Scott Alexander and simply sharing the long-‐awaited night with friends were the most memorable moments. Rachel Madden, a junior who attended the dance on Saturday, professed,“Prom was a really exciting experience for me. Everything about the night was great.” Spartan Expressions • New Hartford Senior High School • New Hartford, NY M a y 8 , 2 0 1 4! ! 2 NE WS To many, the food provided by the Radisson hotel contributed to this fabulous experience. Those who attended were given a choice of chicken, eggplant parmesan, steak, or ;ish for their main course. Many confessed that their meal, as well as the salad and bread, was delicious. Lauren Vedete, a junior, commented, “The food was amazing. I really enjoyed my meal... and the chocolate fountain.” However, some juniors were not impressed by the food. Some complained that their meal was not at all what they expected. Another cause for debate was the music at prom. While most appreciated the up-‐beat techno style of the DJ, some complained that it was too repetitive and eventually became boring. Lauren Vedete explains, “I really liked the music, but I know some of my friends didn’t.” Regardless of what Juniors enjoyed most about this night, it was clear that most people had a great time. Cooke, like many, enjoyed preparing for prom long before its arrival. Rachael bought her dress, chose her accessories, and even went tanning months in advance. Her preparation ensured that the night would be as wonderful as she imagined it would be. “I think a lot of people prepare for prom so far ahead of time because it's seen as a really important day... Although preparing for prom can be exciting, many also found it extremely stressful. Uncertainty over dates, picture groups, and seating arrangements were causes of anxiety for many Juniors. Regardless of the con;lict that arose prior to prom, most who attended agreed that their disagreements were trivial when the night arrived. Cooke explains, “I’m really glad that the night was so fun. Students who are taking this AP test for the first time are nervous for sure. “I have a horrible time management problem so doing 80 questions in 55 minutes and dissecting a whole essay and DBQ with time restraints 1. Start with broad information is going to really freak me out, but I hopefully think it will be ok,” says New and then focus in on more detail Hartford sophomore Liz Hill. There is an open-enrollment policy about AP exams at New 2. Do multiple choice questions Hartford, meaning that anyone who wants to join an AP class is allowed; other previous exams schools have restrictions or students are chosen. This policy, might be the reason 3. Practice the multiple choice that students at New Hartford can do so well on the test. The fact that they have the desire to take the class and to perform to the best of their ability, makes their section under the time restraints performance all the better. 4. Practice essays and DBQ’s under “First, I wanted to do it for me, to push myself. If I am capable the time restraints of it I think I should do it. Second of all, I wanted it to look good for college applications,” says Katie Smith, a Sophomore at New Hartford. 5. Minimize “wasted time” “I would have to say mostly my family, the inspiration of my brother Jake, he really encouraged me to take AP in the first place. He said it would be a great inspiration for college and I want to go into the medical field so i thought that if I could do a college level course I could advance at a faster pace,” says Liz Hill. New Hartford offers many AP classes which have opportunities the students can greatly benefit from. AP European History teacher at New Hartford High School, Mr. Walters says “I value the fact that the AP program gives ambitious students a chance to work at a college level while still in high school. The AP courses focus both on content and skills and for the students who invest themselves they can be very enriching.” “I like that it prepares you for more advanced learning, like in college years and provides you with so many skills that you can use later in life,” says Katie Smith. The AP courses are based at a college skill level that challenge students to think beyond they have in previous grade levels. “I think part of it is the respect that comes with it because, if you are doing well in an AP course people are going to respect you for your time, your energy, and your effort,” says Liz Hill. As the AP Test Week is fast approaching, the nerves are getting to students. “I’m nervous about not only passing the test but getting a 4 or a 5 which is my goal,” says Katie Smith. This nervousness stems from the restraints and style in which the test is given. Mr. Walters says that time management is the the number one thing that students will mess up on. That, and the fact that students don’t use their time correctly and fail to prepare like their teachers instructed them to. “The hardest thing about AP would have to be balancing the work with daily life - because you have to plan your big assignments ahead of time, when to do them. Because we have such busy schedules,” says Katie Smith. Mr. Walters gives some tips as to how to study the mass amounts of material. “Start with general concepts and work your way down to greater detail. Also students should manage stress by eating properly, sleeping properly, getting exercise, and by minimizing wasted time.” Katie Smith says that she will study by taking the old tests that her teacher has given her, then look up the material to the questions that she missed. Liz Hill says that she will study by using her brother for information, and using different available resources such as her textbook and notes packets to do some studying. When asked what he loved best about teaching an AP class, all Mr. Walters could say was, “I love Nerds.” AP Exam Schedule May 2014 DAY MO RN ING 8 AM. LOCA TION A F TERN O O N 1 2 PM. It’s a rite of passage. For most, a night waltzed into a frenzy of enchantment. A night that may be hard to remember, but impossible to forget. However, for one, the dream became a nightmare before it even started. The morning of the dance in Milford, Connecticut, 16 year old Maren Sanchez lost her life. She was invited by Christopher Plaskon, but declined the offer because she already promised to go with her boyfriend. This polite rejection warranted Plaskon to blame the school. It was an unfortunate occurrence but the blame lies with the unsteady mind of the teenager who felt he had to take a life.” The dance was canceled in the wake of the incident to be rescheduled at a later date. This didn’t stop Friends and fellow students, some in prom dresses and tuxedos, from gathering at a local beach Friday night to remember their late friend. The crowd of about 200 released purple, star shaped balloons and shouted "Love you, Maren," as they floated away. According to Broadway World’s website, Jeter's numerous achievements include the 1996 Rookie of the Year Award, 13 All-Star Game selections, five World Series rings, membership in MLB's prestigious 3,000 hits club and the longest-tenured captaincy of any Yankees player. A section of Jeter’s letter to his fans. atlanticblackstar.com Dan Rabbia, a senior at New Hartford, has been a Yankees fan since he was six years old. “Derek Jeter, to me, is the face of the Yankees, and an excellent role model. He got me hooked on the Yankees,” says Rabbia. This may seem like the “talk of the town”, but there is a good population of people that are not really affected by Jeter’s retirement. A non-baseball fan Briana Anderson, also a senior, believes it will be quite different for the Yankee team to not have such an important player anymore. “I grew up always hearing his name and everyone loved him so it's weird to think he's retiring, but it doesn't really effect me,” says Anderson. Derek Jeter is retiring this season after two decades as the Yankees shortstop, at age 39. The average age for professional baseball players to retire is around their early thirties. However, like Jeter, most players continue to play past that age. manginphotography.net Although it is bittersweet for Yankee fans to have an idolized player retire, Dan Rabbia believes it is better for Jeter to retire now rather than possibly ruining his reputation by trying to add on a few more years of baseball. “Jeter is still doing well, and he is leaving gracefully on his own terms. The definition of class,” says Rabbia. A section of Jeter’s letter to his fans. Most high school students start looking at colleges during their junior and senior year. It is difficult to choose a college on so many factors, but one of the biggest decisions is whether to choose a small college or large university. A small college can be a better choice for those who like one on one attention, whereas others may prefer the anonymity often offered by a large campus environment. Although some prefer the greater name recognition offered by large universities. To start off, let’s talk about what it’s like attending a large university. Since a university is comprised of several colleges, a freshman has the choice of several majors within a large university. Some students, particularly those that are undecided on a major, value the choice and ability to change their major from a wide range of choices. Since there are so many majors, one can take a wide variety of interesting elective courses. On large campuses, there’s also typically more student activities and organizations for a student to participate, providing a greater spectrum to socialize with other students who share the same passions or explore new, undiscovered interests. Since large universities typically have larger budgets and support several colleges within the university, they have the ability support more sophisticated libraries and research facilities. There’s also a belief among some students that a large university’s name recognition might improve job prospects after graduation. But large universities are not the best fit for everyone. They can be stressful on students who do not do well in a big By: Briana Acevedo-Gallagher crowd atmosphere. Many classes can be comprised of a hundred or more students, whereas small colleges, conversely, typically have small, intimate classes. This means students can potentially interact and participate more with their classmates as well as their professors. In a small class, theres more opportunities to succeed because in a small class there’s less competition. But classes in a large university are filled with several students, which makes it harder to succeed, due to several students competing in the same major. Small colleges often have very experienced professors not often found in a university. A university is comprised of teaching assistants who are not real professors. In a university, the professors main focus is research leaving teaching as a second priority, whereas, a small college finds professors focused on teaching. Another important aspect of a small college is a student’s work will be evaluated more carefully than a large college; the reason for this is professors at a large college have several papers and exams to grade, which means they don’t have time to give you feedback about your work. Small colleges gives you a chance to write more papers and this helps improve your writing skills. Professors will also help you one-on-one if you are having trouble with your work. If you attend a small college, you will get to know your professors as a person and not feel intimidated; you may even get better advising from your professor, and the professor will know you well enough to write a letter of recommendation for graduate school when the time comes. At universities, your professor has several students to teach and grade their papers, when you ask them for help, they may see you as just another one of their students rather than an individual. The advantage of going to a small college is there’s more freedom to design your own majors, and take the classes that you want to take; unlike large colleges where you are unable to create your own major, and have to take the classes that the college expects you to take. Universities and small colleges are very different, both have disadvantages and advantages, but I believe small colleges have more advantages than a university. I would rather go to a small college because I won’t feel so alone. If I went to a large college, I would feel a bit alienated and feel that no one truly cares about me. I would feel as though my professors would care less if I did well in their class or not. I also think small colleges would give me more opportunities to succeed, since there’s less competition. But most importantly small colleges have intimate classes where you can interact more with the students and professors. And through these intimate classes you feel as though your professor cares whether you pass or fail; professors want their students to do well, so they give their students help and encouragement. For me, small colleges are easier to adjust too because there’s a limited amount of students, which makes it easier to find friends and feel like you’re part of a community. She believes small colleges are friendlier, and you are able to connect with colleges are better than universities, because the classes are smaller and less more people. overwhelming. Choosing a small college was also important to her because she wanted to be able to interact with her professors on a meaningful level. Kayla Paratore is currently a senior; she can’t wait until college in the fall. She is attending Western New England University. The size of the college was very important to her because she doesn’t like small colleges because their too personal. We are in the modern world, but is that reason enough to close the door on something that we’ve done for thousands of years? Talking has been the way of communication for as long as anyone alive can remember and as far as historians are concerned there are only theories as to how humans began to speak to one another along the path of evolution. The problem with texting for most people is that they find it inconvenient or they feel uncomfortable with actually talking on the phone. Hannah Rahill commented as she took the survey that the reason she herself was not saying that she called more was that no one ever answered. Throughout the survey people asked whether to base their choice between texting and calling on what they wanted to do or what they actually did. This brings about the discussion that in modern society there is just less time for people to dial someone’s number and have an in depth conversation with them. By calling someone or answering a phone call it immediately commits people to take time out of their day and pay attention to someone else’s life and problems. This seems like a bad thing when looking at it perhaps from a productive point of view or in a selfish way, that your time is more important than anyone else’s, but it used to be different. The older generations of people find it more comforting to call instead of text in fact they absolutely love it when their children and grandchildren call them because it allows for them to not only hear their voice, but also detect the caller’s emotion. This is what is so important with actually talking to someone on the phone and what the increase in texting has slowly been erasing, the actual communication with others and hearing and feeling the conversation on a more personal level. While some students spray tan, others use tanning beds and some have just gotten color from laying out during spring break while on vacation. Although tanning is basically a lifestyle for some students, others are against it completely, which leads to the question of the week: TO TAN OR NOT TO TAN? That is true in a sense, but to be exposed to light too long, even regular sunlight, is dangerous to your skin. Sun provides Vitamin D, but can also cause skin cancer. On top of that, even if you happen to get a tan and not burn, you may look better, but you won’t look like you. I was just a typical 16 year-old looking for a job who wold take anything I could get. However, my employment at tanning bed caused me to wonder if tanning was safe and/ or healthy. Millions of websites will tell you it’s not, and most people connect indoor tanning booths to skin cancer. Although it is possible to get skin cancer from indoor tanning, many people refuse to acknowledge that you can also get skin cancer from the sun itself, not just the tanning bed’s UV rays. THe decision to tan or not to tan is completely up to a person and how they feel about the experience. Personally, I believe tanning is okay (if done in moderation)! There are many ways to achieve a healthy indoor tan. Always, under any circumstances, wear the goggles they provide at the counter. [The goggles] protect your eyes from the harmful UV lights! Don’t forget to always apply a sunscreen, an intensifier, or minimal bronzer. Lastly, if you choose to tan and want to be as healthy as possible, I suggest not going every single day for the the full time, once or twice a week is just the right amount! Whether they’re taken out for the season or an injury prevents them from playing for a while, it could always take a toll on how the team continuously plays. Just recently, starting weak side linebacker for the Jacksonville Jaguars suffered from a stroke during one of their games. The football player acquired a concussion after a game he played back in December. Russell Allen had collided with the Buffalo Bills player Eric Wood. After not seeing a doctor right away, he went to sleep and woke up the next morning with a pounding headache that sent him to the emergency room. The doctor there told him that he had suffered from a stroke, and after that he was forced to retire from the NFL at the age of 27. The stroke was related to a dead spot found on his brain about the size of a dime, and would give him a hard time with his coordination which is something that he would need in order to ever be able to play football again. Andrew Weiss, a 24 year old who used to live down in Jacksonville enjoyed following the team when he used to live there. “I think it’s unfortunate,” He started when asked about the player’s stroke. “it’s really sad that this injury ruined his playing.” Some people might be concerned about how the team will be playing after this loss, but Weiss doesn’t seem so. “The Jaguars are a pretty decent team from what I remember. So hopefully this hit to the team won’t effect them that badly.” It’s also important to note the nature of the stroke, and with the player being so young. “Of course it’s strange,” Weiss continued. “but considering his head injury it’s not all that surprising. I just hope that this injury doesn’t harm him any further.” John Manley, a former high school football coach who currently lives in Daytona Beach Florida also expressed his concerns on the matter. “It’s sad that he has to end his career so soon, but for the sake of his health most would agree it was a good choice.” With what happened to Allen, it seems that taking him off the feild after his injury was the best thing anyone could so at this point. “When it comes to a man’s health versus a game, it’s better to just take a step back and focus on getting yourself better.” Manley stated. While the early retirement of Jaguars player Russell Allen is sad, fans seem to be glad that his injury wasn’t worse than it could’ve been. One thing is for sure the NBA is where amazing happens. The first round of the NBA playoffs just came to a conclusion and it had all the basketball analysts says it was the best first round of basketball in history. In the playoffs every possession matters because just one play can change the entire series. This was extremely apparent this year because there was a league record five game sevens. Not all the series were crazy such as the Miami Heat and Charlotte Bobcats series was over in four games. The Heat swept the series from the wounded Bobcats. The Washington Wizards and Chicago Bulls series was also anti climatic. The front court magic of John Wall and Bradley Beal lead the underdog Wizards to a series win in five games. Besides those two series all the others were hectic and heated. With only one team being able to be crowned NBA champions every team is pulling out all the tricks in the book to try and win. The number one seed in the East Indiana Pacers had a scare against the Atlanta Hawks. It was the back and forth series the Hawks won game 1 and the Pacers answered back with a game 2 win. That patterned proceeded the entire series, but the Pacers had to overcome a huge feat in game 6. They found themselves trailing by 5 towards the end of the game when David West lead them to a 16 to 4 run to propel the Pacers to a 95-88 victory. This sent it into game 7 where the Pacers snapped the pattern and easily beat the Hawks by 12 points. The other intense series in the East was the young upstart Toronto Raptors versus the veteran Brooklyn Nets. It was a very evenly matched series but at the end of the day experience beat youth. The Nets took the 104-103 game seven victory thanks to wiley veteran Paul Pierce’s game saving block in the last seconds. In the West top seed San Antonio Spurs took on the well coached Dallas Mavs. The Mavs initially took a 2-1 lead thanks to the future hall of famer Dirk Nowitzki and the speedy two guard Monta Ellis. The Spurs countered with back to back wins to take the series lead at 3-2. In game 6 the Mavs Monta Ellis was too much for the Spurs his craftiness in the paint got him 29 points and the Mavs a 2 point victory. The series went to game 7 where the Spurs showed why they are the number 1 seed the crushed Dallas by 23 points. Continuing in the West the rough and tough Memphis Grizzlies played the MVP hopefully Kevin Durant and his Oklahoma City Thunder. In the series there was 4 straight games where it went into overtime, which was the first time that it has ever happened in the NBA playoffs. Through the first 5 games the Grizzlies were up 3-2, but the Thunder took won game 6 to send it into game 7. To make matters worse Zach Randolph arguably the Grizzlies best player tried punching the Thunders center Steven Adams and got suspended for game 7. With Randolph out of the picture the Thunder cruised to an 11 point win. The last series that went to game 7 was the Los Angeles Clippers and the Golden State Warriors. These interstate rivals have bad blood and it was apparent on the court. The splash brothers Klay Thompson and Steph Curry shot lights out and led the Warriors to 3 victories, but at the end of the day they didn't have enough manpower to top the well rounded Los Angeles team in game 7. The last series was the Portland Trail Blazers playing the Houston Rockets. The Blazers kicked off the series with a victory in overtime. Lamarcus Aldridges 43 points fueled the Blazers to a game two victory, but Houston rebuttaled with a game 3 win in OT. The series went to game 6 where the Blazers lead 3-2. The game was tied in the last minute when Chandler Parsons scored on a reverse layup to put Houston up by 2 with .9 seconds left. Portland then inbounded the ball to their star Damien Lillard who released the ball from the 3 point line and drained the shot to win by 1. Houston was shocked while Portland celebrated their round 1 victory. Spartan Expressions • New Hartford Senior High School • New Hartford, NY M a y 8 , 2 0 1 4! ! 20 SPORTS Clipping Sterling. For the wealthy and well-known celebrities; be it business, movies, politics, or sports; It’s easy for the story-hungry press to blow things very far out of proportion. April 9th, very incriminating audio recordings of Mr. Sterling to his scandalous girlfriend, the NBA team owner can be heard berating different ethnicities. For some time Donald Sterling has been accused of using racial slurs; having suffered several lawsuits from previous NBA coaches and owners, and for just generally sleezy behavior (In 1981, he refused to pay the $1,000 prize to a local lawyer who won a free throw contest until the contestant filed a lawsuit.) [www.IceManSports.com] This incident is the first time any auditory proof has ever come to light, though it still doesn’t detract too much from Donald Sterling’s bad reputation as one of the worst franchise owners in NBA history, or of the 4 major sports entirely; The Clippers in 2004 declined to pay for assistant coach Kim Hughes’ surgery for prostate cancer; instead, only four Clippers players contributed to cover the $70,000 cost. The recordings, and the famed Magic Johnson’s reaction was all manager Adam Silver needed to CLIP Sterling’s head off the serpent’s body. April 29th, the long-time owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, Donald Sterling, was formally banned from participating in the NBA for the remainder of his lifetime. In accordance with his neglect of ethics the renowned ‘slumlord’ was not only forced to sell the team (which is estimated to be worth a staggering $500Million), Mr. Sterling was fined $2.5 million, a tiny fraction of his estimated $1.9 billion fortune. All things considered, it’s a very light punishment. Despite the otherwise lacking punishment, the LA Clippers, accompanied by their more prominant Lakers counterparts rejoiced at the newfound clarity in their management. "We wholeheartedly support and embrace the decision by the NBA and Commissioner Adam Silver today," the team declared. "Now the healing process begins."[CNN.com] It’s expected of the NBA board and the Clipper’s managerial team, Adam Silver included, that the scum and stain this Donald Sterling, will finally sink into the abyss. The show is based on the life of a high school student, Jenna Hamilton, and the many crazy situations she finds herself in. Some of those situations include a rumor spreading around the school that she attempted suicide (when she actually slipped in her bathroom), her mom anonymously writing her an offensive note, and her struggle to choose between the many boys she finds herself becoming acquainted with such as Matty McKibben, Jake Rosati and Collin Jennings. By the looks of the first few episodes of season four, and previews of upcoming episodes, season four looks to be as drama-filled as every season before it. “I’m obviously stoked for this season. I’m excited to see what happens between Matty and Jenna, but I’m unsure about Jake’s new personality, I liked the old Jake,” said Colleen Ashmore, a senior like Jenna. On the other hand, Gabi Spaziani, who is also a senior, dislikes the show. “I started watching [it] when it first came out, but I really just didn’t like the plot,” described Gabi. Gabi also said that the 10 pm showtime drew her away because she has practice on Tuesdays until 9:30 pm, so she would have to find another time to catch up on the show. While Colleen loves watching “Awkward” because she likes “the realistic feel of the show,” and the fact that, “it’s straight forward when it comes to discussing teenage life,” Gabi believes in some cases the show “over exaggerates high school life, as it seems to imply that all teenagers act like that.” From observation, certain scenes in the show depict scenarios that probably would never occur in an average high school. For example, one character, Ming, is depicted as being part of the school’s “Asian Mafia” where, after punching the ring leader in the face, she assumes control of all the Asian students and receives access to the school’s private information. A promo for the premiere of season four of “Awkward.” Photo from seriesnews.biz. Joe Trivieri, another senior, offered a different perspective, saying “Awkward,” regardless of whether it accurately depicts high school life, really isn’t the type of show he, or most boys, would watch. “I’m just not into that type of show. I’m more into watching sports like hockey, or shows like ‘NCIS,’ he said. “I like the [shows] I can understand.” A review from the LA Times when “Awkward” first aired in July 2011 said the show was “about and aimed at older teens. MTV clearly wants to be the place kids turn their eyes when they graduate from Nickelodeon or the Disney Channel.” The review also explained this may be the reason the show airs so late at night, in order to keep the show out of view of younger children. Another review, by the NY Times, described the show as being a parody of ABC Family’s “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” but that’s not entirely accurate. Whereas “Secret Life” focused on the life of a pregnant teen and how she coped with this life-changing experience, “Awkward” gives more of a glimpse at what teenagers actually do with their spare time. For example, in the first episode of season four, Jenna becomes concerned with her class rank and the fact that she does not have enough extracurricular activities. At the same time, her best friend Tamara, the senior class President, is trying to organize senior class activities while also struggling with relationship trouble with her boyfriend. The show, “is a wry show about longing — for love, certainly, but also for consistency, that great intangible in the evermorphing world of high school life,” wrote the NY Times. “Awkward” aires every Tuesday at 10pm on MTV. When an individual is forcibly birthed into a vast, untold universe; he is saddled with two fears: loud noises and falling, according to Eleanor J. Gibson and R.D. Walk at Cornell University. These exist even without prior knowledge on what even is in the world to be afraid of, they are a part of our primary being. Our descendents lived a raw lifestyle, with death lurking around every corner- paranoia is threaded in human nature. Now, with a more humane, advanced civilization upon us- what is there to be afraid of ? We have conquered diseases, irrational actions, and other threats. However, the one concept we cannot conquer is the unknown. It correlates with death, the dark, what could happen when one is at a high elevation, or even embarrassing scenarios- no one can tell the future. The unknown comes from needing closure, humans seek answers that’s why we’ve tried to map out an impossibly large dimension of which we live in that we so humbly titled The Universe. Closure is our security blanket and we pull on the edges until it stretches so far that it unravels into something not even true. This safety net, whether it be true or not, is what keeps everyone going to sleep at night. Nonetheless, the unknown is rooted to all fears when investigating the origin of every single one and cannot be avoided. Experiences, relationships, and personal traumas directly relate and can significantly affect how one may view a simple thing such as a ferris wheel, or a small insect. Essentially, unknowing and these are the direct causes for fears. The untold, unforeseeable outcome of these can drive a person mad. The Mental Health Foundation states, “Health problems that are directly linked to fear include phobias, panic attacks and anxiety disorders, including obsessive compulsive disorder.” The fear within us can consume us, it can eat away at your daily life. Science has made serious developments over the past centuries on the studies of fear. Psychology has narrowed down fear into two distinct types to diffuse any confusion: Biochemical and Emotional. Biochemical is described by about.com as “Physical reactions to fear include sweating, increased heart rate and high adrenaline levels. This physical response is sometimes known as the “fight or flight” response, in which the body prepares itself to either enter combat or run away.” New Hartford High School Fears Matthew Giehl, “Spiders.” Mrs. Johnson, “Snakes, car accidents, spiders, the dark, heights.” Christian Maya, “Burning to death, being the last man on earth, knowing how you’re going to die, spiders, seeing someone outside your window at night.” Katie Smith, “Spiders, public speaking, bridges, planes.” Morgan Calabrese, “Math, and heights.” Espen Taylor, “Clowns.” Dylan Van Savage, “Aliens, cholesterol, the dark, walking and suddenly exploding.” Zach Cole, “Drowning.” Gus Pfisterer, “Snakes, heights, dying, and spiders.” Dominic Marchitelli, “Drowning.” Jeff Wagner, “Spiders and snakes.” Hank Boucher, “Being suspended in space.” Matt Rowan, “supreme heights.” Honorine, “Tanning beds.” This primal instinct was what allowed humans to survive and exist until today. The willpower and drive to crash into The Unknown and fears of daily life are what allow the strongest to survive. Emotional is described as additionally by about.com as “highly personalized. Some people are adrenaline junkies, thriving on extreme sports and other fear-inducing thrill situations. Others have a negative reaction to the feeling of fear, avoiding fear-inducing situations at all costs.” Certain aspects of our world today, whether it be animals or a situation, trigger these responses and heavy sense of paranoia or anxiety when they are introduced. Fear is an innate emotion, we will never not be afraid, living with it is something one must cope with. Fear as well as any other emotion make us human. Twitter forces you to improve your editing skills It’s almost like playing a game; trying to write a 140character message and still get your point across in a way that inspires your followers to take action, to click on your link or to “retweet” your post. Twitter is the last of the Big Four to go public. In the social networking ecosystem, Twitter is seen as a must have in terms of a social strategy, and is the only major player left that is still up for grabs-YouTube (owned by Google), LinkedIn (IPO), and Facebook (IPO) are all spoken for. Other upstarts like Pinterest are just getting started so Twitter is going to be the talk of the town into 2014.” Charlene Li Group From my experience using Twitter, I take advantage of the inspiration. People tweet interesting things. Tweets can be quotes, motivational, inspirational, artistic, weird, nonsense, idea sparking, creative, poetry, wise, dumb, and so on. What all of this means is, you have to be concise. You have to know exactly what you want to say, and say it in as few words as possible. Whenever I need it most, it knows how to run as fast as it can away from me. Everyday I feel like I just might be able to hold it in my hands for a minute, it always begins to accelerate like a speedometer. Always making a wish that maybe for just one day--I can say that I really made the clock worth it. Then and again, time cracks away at becoming a worst enemy. Impatience is like the fire, while time begins to pour on the gasoline. I always forget, that fire can’t burn forever-- and fire leaves a mark on everything it touches. The last thing I want to do is burn myself with the regret of wishing my time away. Regardless of what happens in a day, it’s important to remember that it’s not the time that you were given, but the time that you can use now. There’s no turning back for the past, the future is not here yet, so know that the present is truly a gift, because you will never have the opportunity to enjoy it again. “Nature-al” Advice By Jenelle Edwards Hello students, teachers, and faculty. Spring is finally here! I sincerely hope that everyone has been having a good year, and that everyone can reach their inner peace. Here is one passage( another will be in the next issue) of some earthy advice- enjoy! talesalongtheway.files.wordpress.com/ 2013/10/geese.jpg LESSONS FROM THE GEESE from Agricultural Notes, Issue 97, Merle W. Boos, editor, ELCA: When each goose flaps its wings, it creates an “uplift” for the bird following. By flying in a “V” formation, the whole flock adds 71% more flying range than if each bird flew alone. LESSON 1: People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier because they are traveling on the thrust of one another. When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to fly alone and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the birds immediately in front. LESSON 2: If we have as much sense as a goose, we will join in formations with those who are headed where we want to go.When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back into the formation and another goose flies at the point position. LESSON 3: It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks and sharing leadership- with people, as with geese- interdependent with one another.Geese in formation work from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. LESSON 4: We need to make sure our honking from behind is encouraging- not something less helpful. When a goose gets sick or wounded or shot down, two geese drop out of formation and follow their fellow members down to help provide protection. They stay with this member of the flock until he or she is able to fly well or dies. Then they launch out on their own , with another formation, or to catch up with their own flock. LESSON 5: If we have as much sense as the geese, we’ll stand by one another like they do. I found out there was something wrong with my mother the day I got home from school. She was crying in the bathroom bleeding all over the floor with a towel up against her nose. I was so scared for my mother and decided to call the ambulance. The ambulance came and put her in the truck with great ease. I entered the ambulance with her, holding her hand and telling her that everything was going to be okay, but the truth was that I had no idea what was going to happen to my best friend. We arrived at the hospital, the ambulance rushed her into the emergency room and put her in a secluded room. They helped her change into a nightgown. While doing this they had my mom take a physical. Moments later, one of the doctors came with a look of sadness all over her face. I was afraid to hear the words that were going to come out of her mouth, which I thought were going to be horrifying. The words that came out was “your mother has cancer.” I yelled at the doctor, denying everything she just said, but realized that it was the truth and there was no way to shake it. I held my mother’s hand, she was sobbing and was not able to look me in the eyes. I told her her that everything was going to be okay, that she was going to overcome this, but the truth was I had no idea. Overtime, she began getting worse and worse to the point where she would cough up blood. I couldn’t believe that a healthy woman, who eats well and exercises often could have cancer. My mother’s doctor told us my mother’s life expectancy: two more years to live, if she doesn’t attend to have chemotherapy. I wanted my mom to take the chemotherapy, but she didn’t get any better, she just got worse. She was always at the doctors for check ups, taking medications, and was depressed. I found out from the doctor that the cancer was deteriorating my mom’s insides and only has year to live. The chemotherapy was not helping my mother. It was up to me to turn this terrible news into something positive. I decided to make a list for my mom of all things she wanted to do before she died. We were able to finish everything on our list except two things: walking me down the aisle and holding my newborn baby. The sad part about everything is my daughter will never meet her grandmother; although she will be able to get an essence of her through pictures and stories. These pictures and stories will be her legacy; she will always be in my heart as well as my daughter’s heart. Cancer did not take my mother, it only made me love my mother that much more. The sun is an ogling orange. The ocean is a sparkling sapphire blue. The grass is a glossy green. The ground is a bumbling brown. The sand is a tantalizing tan. The stone is a gravely gray. The sky is a brilliantly clear blue as I look at all there is to see. The view takes away my breath and I’ll cherish this moment before reality calls to me. The mountain that I am standing upon is taller than the rest. The cliff I face will surely be the ultimate test. The wind picks up and I know the time is here. The courage I’ve found so I jump, leaving no time for fear. The ground gives way to open sky. The air rushes past me as fog and cliffs pass by. The feeling of free-falling is like nothing ever felt before. The journey is ending though as I see the forest floor. The adrenaline surges through my veins as I quickly pull the chord. The parachute comes flapping out and I breath once again thinking of life’s just reward. The truth be known by everyone who’s ever tried to fly. The experience is electrifying, but very few do try. The wait is over my feet touch down. The drive home is always saddest as I pass through the town. The flight is over and there is nothing left to do but go back to the real world. The memory of descending from the sky, the feeling when the parachute unfurled. The fear, the thrill, the jump, the fall. The hobby that truly has its own call. The time to fly is never planned. So fly away, way up high to where the treetops touch the sky The sky's the limit you just have to try to let your dreams touch the sky Spartan Expressions • New Hartford Senior High School • New Hartford, NY
