For the 10th London Short Film
Festival in January 2013, we took
the John Cassavetes / Minor Threat
quote “Dare to Fail” as a mantra,
to highlight a way forward for the
Festival and how it had managed to
keep going and growing over 10 years, and to also hold
a mirror up to the filmmakers whose work we screen;
those dedicated artists who are pushing themselves
to make the best work they can. So, I’d like to throw
out another quote: “Art revolves around creating
something that isn’t there”, says Kathleen Hanna (ex of
groundbreaking bands Bikini Kill and Le Tigre); Hanna
is a figure close to London Short Film Festival’s heart,
with an unflinching dedication to an independent cause
with her music and art, and because of this we open
the 11th Festival with The Punk Singer, a documentary
feature film about her. At a time when supposedly
everything has been done, with nothing new out there,
Hanna’s quote is a contradiction, as filmmakers can raid
a whole history of over a hundred years of images and
pictures to create new work. Stealing is essential to create something where there is nothing, and that empty
space is there to be filled with images and stories by any
means necessary. With a record 32 programmes in this
year’s LSFF of new short films selected from 1200 open
submission entries, we hope to put even more images
up there for future filmmakers to steal.

Film Will Eat Itself is the title of one of our events
looking at making films out of other films… literally! The
ultimate form of cinematic theft. We’re also presenting
a remix of a 2013 cinematic hit in the form of A Field
in England, as musical and visual remixers Teeth of the
Sea take a psychedelic hatchet to Ben Wheatley’s gothic
cult film. Nothing is sacred anymore...
A big thanks to the venues: ICA (Nico Marzano / Tim Hale / Sam Martin), Picturehouse Cinemas (Jo Blair / Madeleine Mullet / Chris Harris / Clare Binns), Curzon Soho (Ana Santos / Ian

It’s with great pleasure that we
present the 11th year of the London
Short Film Festival, the biggest
edition to date with 32 new shorts
programmes, 21 special events and
19 venues across London. For a
second year running we were delighted to receive over
1,200 submissions, displaying a dedication and passion
for filmmaking which we hope to do justice in January’s
festival.
LSFF is also filling spaces all over London with images,
creating a community of filmmakers and film lovers; as
well as our regular cinemas such as ICA, Curzon Soho,
Hackney Picturehouse, Riverside Studios and others,
we’ve spread out south to the Victorian environs of
Horniman Museum and east into the bars of Dalston
and Hackney. We’re also filling the spaces with debate
with a new series of panel lectures ‘Discussion @ LSFF’.
Maybe audiences will be inspired to start up their own
screening nights or festivals, to steal from LSFF as the
next generation of film exhibitors.
Across the festival’s ten day programme, we host a
series of guest events alongside Club Des Femmes,
Open City, One for Ten and other festival favourites.
We continue to encourage the next generation of
filmmakers with events that champion new talent; from
Collabor8te and Torino Film Lab to straight8’s film app,
challenging filmmakers to shoot, edit and finish a film
across the ten days of the festival. There’s still time to
get a film screened in LSFF11!
We also turn a spotlight on female filmmakers with
retrospective looks at the work of Eva Weber and Jane
Linfoot as well as teaming up with Underwire for our
second Female Filmmakers Dinner alongside Producer,
Elizabeth Karlsen.
Our free industry strand is bigger than ever in 2014,
spanning across our festival hubs ICA and Curzon
Soho. We welcome numerous partners to the festival
to discuss the importance of short film in the industry;
from the future of film festivals to what makes a good
documentary and current issues including sexism in
music videos. With this range of opportunities, LSFF11
hopes to offer support and inspiration wherever you are
in your filmmaking career.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the
help of our 2014 sponsors and supporters, who include
the BFI, Creative Skillset, Airpost, VET, Shooting People
and Lagunitas Brewing Company.
We’d also like to extend a warm thanks to our Award
Partners, who will be recognising excellence in short
filmmaking across the board.
We hope that visitors to the Festival are inspired to steal
for their art; perhaps an image seen will inspire a new
film, or an event will spark an idea to start something
up. After all, a film isn’t just for LSFF, it’s for life!
Lastly, this year’s festival welcomes some new faces
to the team, all of which have been crucial to the
production of our eleventh edition. Our small team
of dedicated and passionate individuals enables the
festival to continue year in year out and I’d like to thank
them for their support and commitment to this year’s
programme. See you in January!

Kathleen Hanna fronted the early 90s Riot Grrrl band
Bikini Kill and then the electronic pop perfection of Le
Tigre. She became a political, confrontational legend:
from DIY punk and bedroom records to electronic pop,
Hanna’s rallying rebellious cry against the sexist, heteronormative music scene proved a source of constant
encouragement to so many fans.
We kick off the 2014 London Short Film Festival with
a documentary feature film that helps us define the
ethos of this Festival. Born 11 years ago, LSFF emerged
from London’s own DIY punk underground of film clubs
and alternative cinema spaces. The film also sheds a
light on women’s roles within the creative industries at
a time when a magnifying glass is being held up to the
male dominated world of filmmaking.
We think it’s a perfect film to kick off the Festival, and a
statement of intent for the 10 days ahead.

IRREDUCIBLE DIFFERENCE
OF THE OTHER, THE V ivienne Dick. 2013, IRE, 27 mins
This experimental film embodies an implicit critique of the
male paradigm where the fetishisation of property and
privilege has resulted in a global ethical deficit. Features
Olwen Fouéré.
SHE HAD HER GUN ALL READY Vivienne Dick. 1978, USA, 28 mins
Set in the Lower East Side, the film explores the unequal
power dynamic between two people. With Lydia Lunch and
Pat Place.
Jane Linfoot has written and directed three
short films to date, all of which have competed at international film festivals and will
screen tonight. The three films (YOUTH, ON
YOUR OWN and SEA VIEW) feature young
characters on the cusp of adulthood, from a
young offen-der trying to make his way into
normal life to a teenage girl in a sexual situation with an older man. Her work is stark and
emotional, as we follow our young characters
finding their way through their mistakes.
Jane was selected for the initial Directors Lab
at Edinburgh International Film festival 2008,
as chosen by Film4, the UK Film Council and
Stephen Woolley. She recently made SEA

One For Ten is an interactive online documentary series about the death penalty and
innocence.
During April and May of 2013, directors Will
Francome and Mark Pizzey and producers
Laura Shacham and Megan Garner, travelled
America, making 10 films in five weeks during
a 5,500-mile road trip. Each film told the story
of a different person who had spent time on
death row before being proven innocent and
released. Highlighting the ten most common
issues with the death penalty, each film was
shot, edited and uploaded in under 48 hours
allowing the audience to submit the interview
questions and shape the films as they went.
Danny Glover, Jeremy Irons, Lily Tomlin and
others introduce each of the 6-7 minute films.
In this special LSFF event, directors Will
Francome and Mark Pizzey and producer
Laura Shacham share the motivations, mechanics and reverberations of the project with
a particular look at technology’s role.

DISCUSSION AT LSFF
FILM CRITIC TO
FILM MAKER
The transition from critic to filmmaker has a
long tradition – most notably, the early critics
of Cahiers du Cinéma went on to define the
French New Wave with their influential body
of work. In the way that Rohmer, Godard and
Truffaut made films that were informed by
their writing, the New American Cinema of the
1960s onwards saw critic Peter Bogdanovich
become one of the era’s most celebrated
directors, alongside Paul Schrader who went
on to write TAXI DRIVER and RAGING BULL.
Closer to home, British director Lindsay
Anderson wrote for Sight & Sound and
the New Statesman before making THIS
SPORTING LIFE, O LUCKY MAN and IF… and
in more recent times, French auteur Olivier
Assayas has taken up the mantel, having
made contributions as a writer in the late 80s.

feel are combined with a mix of wonky pop stylings and John
Carpenter-esque synth noodlings to create a new breed of
hazy synthetic pop.

RETROSPECTIVE AND Q&A
LISA GUNNING EXPLORES
WITH I AM DORA
Followed by a Q&A with Bob Stanley (St Etienne)
Bar DJs from Ghost Box Records and Bob Stanley
Ghost Box is a record label founded in 2004
that unites a small roster of creative talent
with a common visual and sonic aesthetic.
Inspired by an imagined and misremembered
past, this musical and visual world is distinctly British in its sensibilities, condensing a
cultural timeline from the early sixties through
to the early eighties into one simultaneous
and eerily familiar moment. Julian House’s
video for the label is a peculiar mélange of
children’s television, 1960s underground animation and evolving op-art mandalas. Using a
combination of new digital and old analogue
techniques they conjure a world where TV
station indents become occult messages and
films for schools are exercises in mind control
and collective hallucination.
Ghost Box will be screening two film pieces
with music and sound by various Ghost
Box artists in collaboration with the group
Broadcast, these are bookended by a collection short idents, animations and music
promos.
Join us in the bar afterwards, with Ghost Box
DJs and DJ Bob Stanley (St Etienne) plus
Ghost Box visuals.
Film editor Lisa Gunning (SEVEN
PSYCHOPATHS, NOWHERE BOY) has made
her directing debut with a collection of films
inspired by songs from Tales Of Us, the stunning new album from Goldfrapp. TALES OF US
is a 30 minute journey through the individual
stories of Stranger, Laurel, Jo, Drew and
Annabel, which interconnect subtly, sharing
themes of love, loss, madness and identity to
take us on a unique musical and cinematic
journey.
Following the film, I am Dora’s Jemma Desai
will be joined on stage by the director, Lisa
Gunning for an exclusive Q&A.
I am Dora is a publication and series of
screenings that explore how and why women
identify with one another and what this means
when the identification is with a flawed or
misunderstood character.
‘Tales Of Us’ the album is available now on Mute.
The short film will be part of an exclusive Goldfrapp
theatrical event later in 2014.

Kino Bingo returns to LSFF after the hit of
last year’s Festival and LSFF: Down on the
Farm last summer. It challenges your powers
of visual perception and memory. Four reels
of 16mm found footage snippets from the
eclectic collection of the Kino Club archives,
are simultaneously projected, so pay attention! These consist of educational, travel, and
industrial films from the 50s, 60s and 70s
occasionally peppered with rare home movie
footage. All you have to do is match the cryptic
clues on your Kino Bingo card with what you
see the screen.

As the number of digital platforms for short film exhibition and exploitation proliferates, the festival sector is
also seeing growth in both submissions and audience
numbers. Drawing on the expertise of a visiting delegation of European short film programmers, this panel
will attempt a little future gazing: How is the landscape
evolving for festivals? How do they plan to remain competitive and compelling? Is the nature of the festivalfilmmaker relationship changing? How can filmmakers
really cut through the noise in a crowded environment?
This event will be of use to both filmmakers planning a
festival/exhibition strategy and to those interested in
developing a career in the festival sector.

A tantalising collection of non-fiction shorts
which flirt around the edges of the documentary form, seducing us from the boundaries where
artist film, experimental approaches or simply
heightened reality give us new, unexpected
perspectives. From wordless observation to
found footage, from visualising inner worlds
to the slow observation of the intricate world
around us, this varied bunch come to us from
the outposts of documentary.

We consider the marriage of sound and image
in our regular epic selection of creative music
videos alongside short films with a dominant
musical soundtrack. There’s animation and
experimental work, and music from the full
spectrum, from VV Brown to Mat Motte, and
from Serafina Steer to Bat For Lashes. The
screening will also include the London premiere

A WINDOW ON
THE WORLD
UK-based filmmakers bring back stories and
visions from around the world in this selection
of globe-trotting documentaries. From the
trials and tribulations of a low-league football
ref in Poland, to one man’s unexpected feline
preoccupation on the streets of the United Arab
Emirates, from a father-daughter expedition to
meet the Ugandan girl their family sponsor, to
the surreal world of the biggest railway station
in the Balkans; we are on a journey, seeing the
world through the window of the filmmaker’s

NIGHT OF THE
LIVING DOCS
SENSE OF SPACE: Whether it’s a pub, a market,
a village or an island, the places we inhabit
shape us, and we shape them. Frequently
funny, often nostalgic and sometimes tinged
with stoical sadness, these top notch short docs
are about people and place; and in an everchanging world they invariably carry the heavy
weight and anticipation of an uncertain future.
SENSE OF SELF: This selection of portraits,
snapshots and contemplations concentrates
on real people, whether they’re mould-breaking
one-of-a kinds or regular Joes telling their tale.
Real stories, musings, revelations and insights
abound in this excellent collection of new
documentary shorts.

In the 21st century, the male species is
constantly being attacked from all sides, told
to move with our times yet remain a macho
role model. This powerful selection of dramas
ranges from life in a tough borstal in COLOURS,
to a dinner party gone wrong in STEW &
PUNCH, from a punch-up at the pub in INT’VIC,
to a bizarre interrogation room situation in MR
PENCIL’S CREATIVE PERSUASION. You’ll come
out as bruised and battered as our protagonists!
The 21st century sees a lot of lonely men out
there, growing old without friends or family,
whether by choice or by accident. Our lonely
men could be up in space as in PANTHEON, or
at the end of the world as in MR TORQUAY’S
HOLIDAY, or just going about daily life without
personal interactions. Maybe they want to be
left alone for personal reasons because of a
secretive job as in MR INVISIBLE. We meet all
kinds of men in this powerful selection.

THE GOTHIC
AND THE
GROTESQUE
Grotesque is disturbing. Gothic is magnificent.
But both can be beautiful. LSFF joins the BFI
Gothic season with a selection of British short
films that draw on horror, darker themes and
surreal scenarios. Filmmakers tackle challenging subjects to give us thought-provoking
gems, shocking images that challenge our
perceptions, and films that could be considered
bad taste. These films veer from the downright
bizarre to those that play with and subvert
more traditional horror genres. Watch out
for Downton Abbey’s Hugh Bonneville in THE
DINNER PARTY, and THIS IS ENGLAND’s Jo
Hartley in JANET & BERNARD.

The father is the bedrock of the family, or that’s
the traditional notion. But no punches are
pulled in this selection of films tacking parental
love and the fraught relationships between child

charge. There’s Joseph Mawle as an alcoholic in
