Laiño Fellow Pasig Rotarians: PN Dr. Jess Acantilado and his friends OB-Gynes Connie Alfiler, Joy Remo and other Medical City resident doctors had plenty of time during our last meeting to explain what they will do the next day, August 21, at our Ilugin Community Center. Their discussion/explanation was joined by Rtn. Flor de Pano who, after the meeting, shared with the undersigned and Dr. Jess Aga what he knows about the putting up of the Ilugin Community Center. The medical mission the following day at the Ilugin Community Center was well participated by about twenty Medical City OB Gynes who were picked up as early as 7:30AM by Dir. Ray Armas with his Fortuner and PP Benny’s SUV Montero. The medical equipment were picked up by Dr. Jess Aga’s bigger van. Director Albert Mendiola, PE Ogie, Director Bebert Lacuna, PP Benny de Guzman, PP Celso Ylagan, IPP Ramy Garcia IV, the undersigned, and of course, Dr. Jess Aga were at the Medical Mission. New Rotarians Arnel Estaniel and Carlo Angelo Laino also delivered their classification talks during the last meeting. New Rotarian Paul Armas, the son of super active Rotarian Director Ray Armas had to defer his classification talk because of an emergency court appearance. I am again happy to report that our latest financial status as of yesterday, August 26, is as follows: Total Collection: P713,800.00 Total Expenses: P409,029.80 Cash in Bank: P304,770.20 ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG Tinig Newsletter August 27, 2015 Continuation 1. I sincerely appreciate the cooperation of our members in my appeal for the early payment of our obligations to our club. I was also informed by PP Rel that his September 28 golf tournament committee will be meeting any time. I have volunteered to attend because maybe I could be of help to his committee. Finally, please take note that we will have no evening meeting and fellowship next month because our meeting on September 24 (last Thursday) will be transferred to lunch time because our guest speaker for that day is not available in the evening but only during lunch time. Let us please take note also that as per PE Ogie’s announcement during our “wise and otherwise portion” our Board in its last meeting of August 4 has decided that the celebration of our 45th Anniversary will not be in an expensive venue. Thank you again. We all know that what we are doing is service above self. Let us all be gifts to the world. Nerio “Ner” P. Laino World Class President Rotary Year 2015 – 2016 ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG Tinig Newsletter August 27, 2015 PP Benny P. De Guzman It was indeed a fruitful Ninoy Aquino Memorial Day when we fecthed the doctors of Dr. Aga from Medical City for our joint project at our Ilugin clinic. When you see the number of young teen agers having their pregnancy ultrasound, you will be one to help push for birth control of whatever means. The dedication of the doctors indicate there is hope yet, no matter how flickering. At the wake for Dra. Jo, the spouse of former member Dr. Tico Sarmiento, past presidents Al Po and Bert Tayengco were very prominent. Bert even recalled it was during his term the first two rooms of the Ilugin clinic were born. Dr. Jo died a day before the 91st birthday of Golden Boy Tico who looked dashing every inch of his stance. His youngest daughter is the wife of Justice Midas Marquez, the official spokesman of the Supreme Court during the time of impeached Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona, who was there at the wake. PDG Mar Un Ocampo, known political ally of the Aquinos, died 13 hours before Butz died. He was the one in charge of the burial of Ninoy then immediately after serving his term as one of the last District 380 Governors. In fact, he was the one the late PDG Mike Ampil changed. His daughter is now the District Governor of the Luzon District. Last RY, I proposed on the very first month of the BCP Ramy’s term of a dual fellowship of two clubs coming from different neighboring districts. The same proposal came anew when their PP then, Ruben Torres suggested to revive the idea. We can alternately sponsor a fellowship night. It would be cheaper alternately hosting as we have a ready venue in our sports den. Their venue, The Manila Polo Club is good but not as cheap as ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG Tinig Newsletter August 27, 2015 PP Benny P. De Guzman Continuation 1. ours. By cheap I mean lower costs hindi the cheappy cheapy one that comes to mind. The song of last week was nice in lyrics but bad in the interpretation. A song is not a book, and, PP Topax who wrote the lyrics thought it was like reading a good book of his. Pare ko naman, hindi naman OFW kami. A ticklish part of discussion of September’s Board meeting is the fate of many of our absentees, so alarming that a serious review is in order. The embarrassing list of our members also, some without basic info will really show that they were inducted without the required info sheet that Edgar cannot just fill in the info. Many are not aware that even if their classifications are returned or considered dropped from our membership, they cannot join any club if we use failure to pay dues as basis, without first paying our club. A good text I got before our meeting last week came from one of my sponsored members. This text made sure nobody can beat me on the number of Rotarians I invited to join our club, and, the number who either returned their classification (like this one), or were dropped. “Maraming salamat po, Kuya Benny, for your understanding & patience. I’ll make up by supporting any charity project of the club. God bless po your family and Rotary”. Bear in mind, my family ahead of Rotary. Ganyan dapat guys we should sponsor, sponsor muna before anybody else. Congratulations to super philanthropist, Rtn. Chony. He was seen in the papers donating to the City of Manila, with the Mayor Estrada, for community improvement. Mas malaki kita ng Sogo sa Manila kasi? ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG Tinig Newsletter August 27, 2015 PP Jun C. Zafra SAN DIEGO STUDENTS TACKLE VACCINE CONTROVERSY A group of teenage journalism students in suburban San Diego were in the early stages of a new project – an educational film funded by a Rotary grant – when their teacher's phone rang. A prominent blogger had caught wind of what they were doing from a local news story, and wasn't pleased. The fledgling film came under fire almost overnight as ripples of protest spread through the blogosphere. With calls pouring in before shooting had even begun, the advisers considered halting the project, questioning whether it would be worth the controversy surrounding its subject matter: vaccines. "I've been involved with immunization initiatives for over 20 years now," says Amnon Ben-Yehuda, one of the San Diego Rotary members who had contacted the Emmy-winning broadcast journalism program at Carlsbad High School about a health education project, initially conceived as a 15-minute film about the immune system, in 2011. "We knew there were people out there who were against vaccines, but they didn't represent a force we had to deal with until this project." Ben-Yehuda chairs a Rotary districtwide committee that works with local health agencies to increase vaccination coverage. He's seen vaccine-preventable diseases affect even affluent neighborhoods, where the barrier isn't access to vaccines but skepticism about their safety. "For about the last 10 years, we've recognized that the important thing is education," he says. "We began to realize that we were repeating the same message and not getting anywhere. Young people have to learn about immunization before they become parents, so we started working with schools." ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG Tinig Newsletter August 27, 2015 PP Jun C. Zafra Continuation 1. In addition to producing a live daily news broadcast, journalism students at Carlsbad can audition to work on documentary films as an after-school activity. Past features have tackled tough topics: One explores the legacy of the Holocaust, and another focuses on food insecurity among military families. Students are currently covering school shootings as part of a national project with PBS NewsHour. "What impressed us was that the Holocaust film came with lesson plans," Ben-Yehuda says, "and it's been approved by the California Department of Education for use in schools." The Rotary Club of San Diego secured grants from District 5340 and local community organizations to support the health education project, and the students got to work. "We had no idea at that time that vaccination was such a controversial topic – it certainly wasn't on my radar," says Doug Green, the Carlsbad High School journalism teacher who worked on the film with a team of 16 students and a parent-volunteer producer. "When we got into it and found there are people who seriously doubt the safety of vaccines, particularly parents of children with autism, we decided to incorporate that." The students spent the next year interviewing medical experts in epidemiology and the treatment of autism, parents of autistic children who believe vaccines cause autism, parents of children who died from vaccine-preventable diseases, and their peers. Some students weren't convinced at first that the benefits of vaccination outweigh the risks. Hannah Evans, whose brother is autistic, shared her evolving views on camera and in a blog post. "It was different for me than the other student filmmakers," she wrote. "Autism affects nearly every moment of my family's life. I had heard ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG Tinig Newsletter August 27, 2015 PP Jun C. Zafra Continuation 2. stories, and I believed there simply had to be a connection between autism and vaccines. Making this film changed my mind." The turning point came when Evans learned about herd immunity – the idea that everyone, including newborns and people with compromised immune systems, benefits when most members of the community are immunized against a disease, because opportunities for outbreaks are limited. "I started to recognize the benefits of vaccines – especially protecting weaker members of society – instead of just contemplating the risks," she says. The students' reflections are woven into the narrative alongside formal interviews and playful graphics (such as a fictional "zombie virus" that helps illustrate how illnesses spread). That interplay is central to what the advisers call peer-to-peer filmmaking. "Part of the premise of the film is the filmmakers' discovering the topic themselves," Green says, and breaking it down for an audience of their peers. San Diego Rotary members saw the finished film, a 40-minute feature called "Invisible Threat," at a private screening in early 2013, though ongoing attention from anti-vaccine activists delayed its wider release for several months. On the eve of a screening with legislators in Washington, D.C., an anti-vaccination organization issued a statement calling for congressional action against what it dubbed "a propaganda piece" for the pharmaceutical industry, to no avail. In a series of op-eds in the San Diego Union-Tribune and Huffington Post, Rotary International General Secretary John Hewko drew connections between the domestic vaccine controversy and the fight against polio. "Playing the blame game won't help," he wrote, noting that we can reduce the number of vaccine refusals "by building ROTARY CLUB OF PASIG Tinig Newsletter August 27, 2015 PP Jun C. Zafra Continuation 3. goodwill and trust, not through confrontation. That's how the Global Polio Eradication Initiative has over the years been able to win the hearts and minds of parents wary of the oral polio vaccine in developing countries." "Invisible Threat" received an award for courage in journalism from the San Diego Press Club in October, and it's been endorsed as an educational tool by 300 health organizations so far, including the Mayo Clinic and the Autism Science Foundation, plus about 80 universities and 20 public school districts. A chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, which hosted a screening at its national conference, uses the film to teach medical residents how to overcome vaccine hesitancy. Plans for Spanish and French versions are underway. "The film has a life of its own now," Ben-Yehuda says. "Our dream is to see Rotary clubs pick up the project in their own communities and work through local boards of education to get it into school systems. It's rich material for teachers to work with. There are issues of science, issues of history, issues of social responsibility, and these issues are all interconnected."
