PETE MINGWAH (MM#4440)
1970-2012
The Marathon Maniac Insane Asylum recently lost one of our own. Pete Mingwah
recently suffered a brain aneurysm and a stroke and died on September 22, 2012.
Pete was very well loved in the Northern California running community, as well with
all who knew him in our club. He is survived by his wife Chezelle and his two young
daughters, Jazmin and Belle.
Pete loved being a Marathon Maniac. As a new runner, all he talked about was joining our club. When he finally did, he
found instant bonds with everyone in that yellow singlet. Pete quickly made a lot of Maniac friends, some of whom
encouraged him to reach for the stars. Specifically, ten of them. Pete’s ultimate goal was to achieve Titanium status. He
reached marathon #38 before his untimely passing.
What I loved most about Pete is his positive energy. I was able to say good bye to my friend at his memorial viewing before
the funeral. It was awesome seeing him in his running gear with all his medals in the casket! His brother said that this is how
he always wanted to go, and I loved that his family honored that wish. I was given the opportunity to approach the podium
and say a few words to his family and non-running friends. I told the story of how at the Run De Vous 100 Mile Endurance
Race, Pete came storming out in a bathrobe singing tacky disco tunes at about our mile 84. I just couldn't believe that he still
had that energy in him after nearly 24 hours of running! His positive energy was like a shot of GU to me, and I quickly was
able to get going again. Everyone in the chapel smiled. That's the thing about Pete. He never allowed anyone to get down on
themselves. I closed my speech by saying that I was going to walk away smiling and giggling because that's exactly what he
would want me to do.
I am done grieving Pete's death, and now I will celebrate his life! This is how he would want it. Ask anyone who knew him or
ever ran with him. They will tell you that Pete is a happy go lucky guy who not only loved running, but all the people he ran
with. Rest in peace, Pete. I know you're eating bacon at mile 19 of the Heaven Marathon right now!
- Tony Nguyen (#2810)
"I never met the guy, but he was a Maniac, and he was my brother.“ - Will Flint
“Pete Mingwah made me feel
better about myself every time I
saw him. Not many people have
that gift. I will never forget the
way he buoyed my steps at
every race......”
- Michelle Ladcani
“Pete has changed my whole perspective on
running and, even on my life. The only thing
that really matters is that you have fun and
treat everyone with respect while doing it.”
– Catherine Yu
"Running the SF Marathon, Pete and I ran
through Golden Gate Park. I didn't want to
say it, so he did for me: "My feet hurt!"
"Mine too!" "But you're wearing Hoka's!"
"So are you!" We laughed, and joked about
how running on trails had spoiled our Hoka
wearing feet.“ - Diana Kitching
“I met Pete briefly at Big
Sur, and found his smile and
positive attitude to be
infectious and inspirational.
My heart goes out to his
family. I know he will be
missed terribly, seemed like
an awesome guy.”
– Cormac Burke
“I never met Pete, but this scripture comes to mind:
Yea, and are willing to mourn with those that mourn;
yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort,
and to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all
things, and in all places that ye may be in, even until
death.
As members of this club, we all mourn his loss. My
deepest sympathies go to his family and all the knew
and loved him.”

BRIDGET WALDRON STEELE (MM#5000)
1970-2012
Early in 2012, the Marathon Maniacs awarded MM #5000 to Bridget
Waldron Steele. Her path to the asylum was incredibly challenging. By
all accounts Bridget was an amazing woman.
When the Main Maniacs announced Bridget’s “Maniacism” to the
group, she told us that “the MMs have inspired me to use running as
part of therapy in my war on stage IV cancer. In a strange way I feel like
I'm running from it”. Her story really drew me in.
In her article Healing is More than Science, Trish Kinney tells us “Even Hippocrates hinted at this powerful
connection when he said that he would rather know what sort of person has a disease than what sort of
disease a person has. He also said that natural forces within us are the true healers of disease”. Bridget
said that “fighting (cancer) on my own emotional terms (was) instrumental in helping me heal … and to
resolve a conflict that runs very very deep”.
In 2011, Bridget put this to work in a big way, running four marathons to qualify for the Maniac Asylum – running in the Richmond, White Rock
(Dallas), Louisiana (Baton Rouge), and Myrtle Beach Marathons.
I had the good fortune to meet Bridget and her husband Chuck in August over dinner in Colorado Springs. She had invited me to get together so
I could learn a bit about the Pike’s Peak Marathon course, which is what brought me to town. Their friend Amy shared some stories about the
course, including just how tough those last miles of the ascent can be. You’re above the trees, and you can see runners ahead of you on the
switchback heading up an unrelenting climb. I brought along a copy of the Marathon Maniacs book, signed by the Main Maniacs, and included
a note about how our stories are the things that get us to keep running, and how much I admired her story.
But by then, running had become difficult for Bridget. She was in lots of pain, but talked about how determined she was to get back to it.
Running was vital to her sense of well-being. Chuck reflects that “It is amazing she ran Richmond, Dallas, Myrtle Beach, Baton Rouge, and half of
Pittsburgh in the last months of her life”, and that this was “her best defense” against the cancer that would take her life at age 42.
When I learned of her passing on 3 October, it made me very sad – this amazing woman had left us all too soon. I learned some important
things from Bridget about running, and about life. She did things with fierce determination, a wickedly irreverent sense of humor, and to push
her limits.
Earning her maniac stars was something that fed her soul. When we run, for the most part we do so on our own terms. We choose the events
and the level of challenge. Running marathons helps us to do things beyond a single race.
Run in peace Bridget … we miss you.
Dr. Chuck Steele is working with folks at West Virginia University to establish a scholarship in Bridget Waldron Steele’s name.

FROM THE EDITOR…
Michelle Day and Steve Walters
September was full of fun and excitement! We had races from coast to coast that drew runners
from all over. Fall got off to a great start and I look forward to what October and November has
in store. There are not shortage of races in the coming months. If you’re a state runner, you can
just jus about many state you want. If multi-race weeks is your thing, doubles, triples and quads
are also in full swing!
I hope to see many of you out there as I will be running from coast to coast this Fall!

RHETORICAL REVELATIONS AND W(RITES)…
FROM THE RAMBUNCTIOUS REV
{Notes: Prez (Steve Yee), Chris, and Tony, founders and leaders of the MarathonManiacs, live in the northwest United
States in the state Washington. I write to my friend “the Prez” about once a month from Pennsylvania, 3000 miles to
the east. Pertinent to this particular letter, in September, Prez posted on the Maniac Facebook page some ideas for
consideration and discussion on setting criteria for what makes a 26.2 mile run a “marathon” for record-keeping
purposes. This is a concern of all marathon clubs.
But Prez’s discussion starter in Facebook launched another sort of record alright: for number of responses to a
Maniac posting, evidently well over a thousand.
This letter is not a discussion of his topic. But the “event” of such a long discussion serves as the backdrop here.}
Dear Prez,
Wow. The last time a guy as nice as you received so much attention from five thousand people simply by saying a few thoughtful words, they
made him cater lunch for all, with just a few fish and a couple loaves of bread.
So how are you feeling, my friend? Four years ago I figured we could make a run for the Presidency (the other one) together, what with all
your Presidential experience and our combined East Coast – West Coast billing: “The Asian Roadrunner and the Caucasian Pokeyfoot.” We would
appeal to the full range of Americans, wouldn’t we? But four years later, I’m not so sure we want the job, eh?
Life is complicated. Just try to unravel the “who caused what, when,” of our economic messes alone! It is all important stuff of course, but,
ach, that headache quickly makes a guy want to take a break and go out for a run, you know?
And we would have to tackle international issues. Not that you couldn’t ace that test, but would you even want to take it? It gives me the
shivers thinking about it, like that marathon in Antarctica idea.
And then there’s… there’s… there’s all those people. People are sure a little different. Or more like medium different. Okay, sumo-size
different. Prez, when I pastored a church of 120 people, they communicated 119 job descriptions to me.
We had a set of cousins immersed in a royal brouhaha over the silverware used in the church kitchen. Discussions like that are everywhere.
From that church, I went to interview at another, and--I am not making this up-- I asked these folks what struggles they were facing. Sheepishly,
they confessed that currently there was a wide internal disagreement about… their silverware.
Made this guy just smile real pleasantly, but wish to just go outside for a nice quiet run.
In golf history, and a serious-minded sport golf is, did you know that for decades, decades, not one but two governing boards issued separate
“THE OFFICIAL Rules of Golf”? Better: the board at the Royal and Ancient Club at St. Andrews in Scotland and the United States Golf Association in
Far Hills, NJ, over those many decades, had golfers at The British Open use a different size golf ball (smaller) than the one in the States. That’s
right. The two ruling bodies couldn’t agree on the size of the ball.
So while your time is full leading the club, we’ll just postpone our run for that other presidency for a while. So I am sorry I won’t be seeing you
this month. Get after Discount Man to find a break on two Maniac Helicopters for us so we can meet for mid-week jogs in St. Louis or Iowa
someplace. A couple of airships in yellow, with black and red letters and a cat logo, would suit nicely.
In the meantime, Prez, know this. Every time I do get out for a run, I think about you, Chris, Tony, and other Maniac friends, because more
than anything else -- more than health goals, more than how much I like getting outside, even more than refining my Superman-like physique -- it
is your cheerful companionship, the laughs, and your encouragement that gets me out there, all while running on a hope and a prayer about the
likes of mile 23.
Thanks for this club, Prez, and the friends you’ve brought to us all, and thank you for being you. Your presence is appreciated out here way
more than you could possibly know.
Luvya,
Rev
