The buildings in the ‘Grid-City’ have many entertaining tales to tell about the former residential seat and its inhabitants. On this tour your guide
will tell you stories big and small about the life of the aristocracy and bourgeoisie taking you past Mannheim’s sights to what might initially seem
like rather insignificant building façades.

Night Watchmen. All Squared Up.*
The night time shrouds us in darkness while shedding light on the unexpected. Mannheim’s night watchmen were perfectly at home in dark
alleyways and secret nooks and crannies. This guided tour turns our attention to the streets of Mannheim by night. You will be told anecdotes
about the work of night watchmen and other “less honourable” colleagues and hear tales of Karl Theodor and the “good old days” of the Electoral
Palatinate. Taking you past historic squares and illuminated sights it will become clear how industrialisation changed the former residential seat.
Binding registration is required for this tour.

Architectural Treasures. All Squared Up.*
Mannheim’s architecture is as varied as the city’s multi-cultural landscape. Influences from the most varied epochs have left their architectural
mark. Glass and steel construction meets the elaborate scrolls of Art Nouveau façades. Friedrichsplatz with the city’s trademark water tower
shows us why Mannheim was once called “Little Paris”. The Art Nouveau gardens captivate us as some of the most beautiful in Europe and their
language of form can be seen throughout the entire city centre. Come and be amazed at what else Mannheim’s architecture has to offer!

Out and About in Mannheim.
Wittelsbach Dynasty. All Squared Up.*
The Diversity of Neckarstadt-West*
Since the residential seat of Mannheim forms the focus of the Wittelsbach anniversary year in 2013, the tour shines the spotlight on this, one
of the most influential dynasties in Germany. The tour highlights how significantly the ruling Wittelsbach family impacted the identity and
traditions of this region.
From 8 September 2013 to 2 March 2014 the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museums at Museum Zeughaus and at Mannheim Baroque Palace will be presenting
the exhibition “The Wittelsbachs on the Rhine. The Electoral Palatinate and Europe”.
In its almost 140 years the district of Neckarstadt-West has undergone quite a few changes. Nevertheless, it has still retained its inimitable
charm. The former gardens on the Neckar developed into a haven of cultural diversity. This guided tour gives you an insight into the past and
present of this district located “Iwwer de Neckarbrick” – dialect for “Over the Neckar Bridge”.
Guided tours of other districts such as the Oststadt can also be booked individually. The team at Welcome Center Mannheim would be happy to advise
you.

Theatre of the World. All Squared Up.*
Pulsating Jungbusch. All Squared Up.*
23 May to 8 June 2014 sees the world theatre festival “Theater der Welt” being hosted in Mannheim. The international festival is a good
opportunity to look back on the ‘Grid-City’ artistic history – especially Mannheim’s Nationaltheater. As the oldest municipal theatre in the
world it was once a magnet for such figures as Wieland, Klopstock and Schiller. The guided tour spans the arc between Mannheim’s artistic and
scientific history and its future – whetting your appetite for the events at the “Theater der Welt” festival.
It is not only Mannheim’s checkerboard layout but also its processes of urban development that suggest similarities with the “Big Apple”. This
process of transitioning from its traditions towards a modern sub-culture in the ‘Grid-City’ is especially noticeable in the district of Jungbusch.
The guided tour takes you from Filsbach and the old mill area “Sackträgerviertel” through the “Unterstadt” to today’s Jungbusch.

In Mozart’s Footsteps. All Squared Up.*
A fiercely independent lady with lots of cats – this was the impression Katharina Margareta von Ludwigsburg, Countess Ottweiler, left on
Mannheim folk at the turn of the 19th century. She went by the name of “Gänsegretel” (Goose Gretel) – as she lived the simple life of a
Goose Girl all alone before she was taken away from all that to get married and become a member of the nobility. On this costumed tour the
aristocratic “Gänsegretel” or her lady-in-waiting will tell you tales of pomp, splendour and plagues.
In July 1763 the child prodigy travelled to Mannheim for the first time with his parents and sister Nannerl. Mozart’s experiences in the ‘GridCity’ were to impact his life and left numerous traces. On this walk, you will follow in his footsteps through the former residential seat of
Mannheim.

Mannheim has a long theatrical history that still impacts the metropolis to this day. Friedrich Schiller already celebrated his early successes
here – for instance, with the legendary premiere of his play “Die Räuber” (The Robbers). This walk traces his footsteps showing you the places
the great poet lived and worked.

The foundations were already laid for Mannheim’s development into one of Germany’s most important industrial locations in 1816 with the
building of the city’s two harbours. Together with Ludwigshafen on the left bank of the Rhine, Mannheim Harbour forms the second-largest
landlocked harbour in Europe with over 70 km of harbour foreshore and 16 million tonnes of shipped goods handled here every year. On this

Mannheim’s
a breath of fresh air.
SAP Arena
Mannheim.
Leisure and Sport in the ‘Grid-City’.
Almost one third of Mannheim’s urban space consists of nature
reserves and countryside. And extensive green space makes up as much
as two-thirds of the city. Part of this is Mannheim’s green oasis in the
heart of city that extends over an impressive 42 hectares and boasts
the largest original Chinese tea house in Europe – the Luisenpark. Its
little brother, the Herzogenriedpark, is also well worth a visit. Sport fans
can train here on the running track or work out on the fitness machines
dotted around it. Those preferring to cheer on their team from the side
lines will also find plenty of opportunities for this in the ‘Grid-City’. The
SAP Arena is both a venue for major events and home to ice hockey
club Adler Mannheim and handball team Rhein-Neckar Löwen. And
don’t miss sports clubs like SV Waldhof and Grün-Weiss Mannheim.
44
Opening in 2005, the SAP Arena is not only Baden-Württemberg’s largest multi-purpose
venue but also one of the most state-of-the-art sport and event locations in Europe. Its
unusual architecture captivating visitors with its impressive roof design already suggests
how exclusive the interior of this major project will be. The SAP Arena is home to ice
hockey’s Adler Mannheim as well as handball’s Rhein-Neckar Löwen. Thanks to
state-of-the-art technology the venue can easily be transformed from an ice stadium
into a handball pitch or a concert hall in no time. This means the SAP Arena not only
underlines Mannheim’s position as a key location for top-class sporting events but is also
an important image and economic factor for the city.
Guided Tour Behind the Scenes at the SAP Arena
Take a tour round those areas of the SAP Arena that remain hidden on a regular visit. Peek
into the changing rooms or take a walk through the Business-Club not accessible to the
public during many events. Put yourself in the shoes of a player and enjoy the view from
the substitutes’ bench right next to the ice. An expert guide will be on hand to answer any
questions during the tour.

years, a trailblazer of the Bundesliga – a more than impressive footballing career presented with a wide
range of personal memorabilia.

Trade Fairs and Markets in the ‘Grid-City’.
Regardless of the time of year, trade fairs and markets add to the
varied appeal of a stay in the ‘Grid-City’. Fresh fruit and vegetables
from the region are to be had three times a week at Mannheim’s
Wochenmarkt at Marktplatz. If you’re looking for something bigger,
then the Maimarkt is for you. This annual regional market is one of
the oldest events in Mannheim. Depending on the season, visitors
can also join in the fun of the Mardi Gras procession, the City Festival
or the Christmas and New Year’s Eve Markets.
Marktplatz – Mannheim’s Wochenmarkt
Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday
Take a wander round one of Germany’s loveliest weekly markets
at Marktplatz in the heart of the city centre. Against the historic
backdrop of the Old Town Hall and parish church fresh delicacies
from Mannheim and the surrounding area will be on sale for your
delectation.

Maimarkt Mannheim
26/04 – 06/05/2014
Mannheim’s Maimarkt is one of the oldest events in the ‘Grid-City’. The market has been held here ever
since Mannheim received market privileges in 1613 from Count Palatine Johann II of Zweibrücken. Now
boasting about 350,000 visitors and some 1,400 exhibitors, Mannheim’s Maimarkt is Germany’s largest
regional public outdoor market today.

Mardi Gras with Street Carnival
27/02 – 04/03/2014
Carnival has a long tradition in the ‘Grid-City’. The annual procession held alternately
in the cities of Mannheim and Ludwigshafen attracts carnival fans from throughout
Southern Germany. Afterwards, the Carnival Market around Mannheim’s Wasserturm
attracts the crowds with sweets, a carousel and a big wheel. On Mardi Gras Mannheim
then celebrates in traditional style throughout the entire city centre.
Mannheim’s “Stadtfest” City Festival
23 – 25/05/2014
Mannheim City Festival is the biggest open-air event in the region and what’s more
it’s free. A real tradition, it enthuses the crowds with a varied music programme of live
performances by regional bands and DJs across five stages. At the Children’s Festival
the Kapuzinerplanken are host to a colourful world of experiences for a full three days.

Mannheim’s Christmas Markets
26/11 – 23/12/2014

but two markets of stalls bring Christmas spirit to the ‘Grid-City’. The
Christmas Market at Friedrichsplatz by the Wasserturm boasts some
200 stalls around Mannheim’s famous landmark while the special
Christmas Market at Kapuzinerplanken awaits you with
one-offs and unique gift ideas.
