Global Company
Company
The history of the lift truck
The idea began back in 1969; former classmates Paul Thermote and Paul
Vanhalst started to repair and service agricultural machinery, flax machines and
tractors. As a team, they came to a quick conclusion about the future of
mechanised agriculture in Belgium.
Their conclusion led to a change in strategy, they began importing second
hand lift trucks from Germany which they repaired and serviced. This was an
inspiration, the growth of industrialisation generated high demand for lift
trucks, while Thermote and Vanhalst provided the perfect answer. In 1973
Thermote and Vanhalst acquired the rights to the Italian make Mora, but
this was only the beginning.
Enter Japan
During the eighties, the positive growth of the industry
continued, it was not long before reconditioned lift trucks
found their way back to the German market, signifying
the beginning of the export movement. During this
period, the Japanese make boomed; encouraged by this,
Thermote and Vanhalst decided, after positive effort to
prove their intentions to the Japanese, to import
second hand lift trucks from Japan, with their first
import order of 40 lift trucks.
Spare Parts Specialist
Before long, spare parts were acquired from numerous lift truck makes, soon
Thermote and Vanhalst created a network of international spare part distributors
across the European market. Not only did they now purchase second hand lift
trucks, buyers also contacted Thermote and Vanhalst for the supply of spare
parts.
A Personal Service Department
Delivering reconditioned and new lift trucks became increasingly important in
the local market. The demand for service and supply of lift trucks helped the
development and growth of the ‘personal service department’.
With imports and exports rising across Europe, Thermote and Vanhalst left a
lasting impression on the second hand market, noticeable even in countries
such as Spain, Portugal and Italy. This effect was based on an excellent
reputation in providing quality at a good price. Towards the end of the 1980’s,
the business expanded, with the opening of the Gullegem site in Belgium,
which employed, at that time, 96 employees, and which was part of the
successful and growing business idea created by Thermote and Vanhalst.

Conquer the World
In the early nineties, Thermote and Vanhalst, known as TVH, began doing business with the U.K
and Scandinavian countries. Increased contacts outside the European network were created
and slowly but surely, THV had grown into a worldwide organisation. The development in the
spares market was a large step forward. Common sense, a feeling for business and a view to
organisation and automation gave TVH the extra advantage they required for further expansion. TVH then became exclusive dealer for Daewoo lift trucks in Belgium and Luxemburg,
securing the future for TVH.
A Worldwide Centre of Knowledge
In 1981, TVH Forklift Parts was founded as a separate business unit. Important investments
in automation had been done, the company acquired sources of data which
reinforced the competitive position on a global scale. All makes now had their own part
numbers, even when it was possible to talk about the same part but from a different make.
Today, TVH Forklift Parts stocks 450 000 parts, all linked to more than 10 000 000 known
part numbers. In a short time the company has grown into a multi-national organisation
that supplies to more than 17.000 customers in 160 countries all over the world.
Overall Supplier
The demand for internal transport material was also developing.
Hand pallet trucks, sack trucks and cranes etc. were now part of
the exclusive product range of TVH. The rental division was
founded, supplying customers with another alternative way of
using TVH products. Slowly but gradually the Gullegem business
was also expanding into a large supplier. Then, in the 1990’s, the
TVH group decided to build new premises, in Waregem,
Belgium. This was a strategic move to house all departments in
the same location. The company was now divided into five
divisions: Forklifts, Parts, Handling Equipment, Rental
Equipment, Service and Repair. The day to day management
and responsibility was now passed on to the second generation of Thermote and Vanhalst families. At the end of 2005,
the company employs more than 900 people.
