History
Photo: Karleen McSherry
The first inhabitants of the area were Native
Americans of the Shoalwater Bay Tribe. During
the 1700s, European explorers arrived in search
of a Northwest Passage—a trade route connecting the Atlantic to the Pacific. In November
1805, Lewis and Clark’s Corp of Discovery
landed at what is now Cape Disappointment.
Sitka spruce still jut from the shoreline where
migrating wild fowl skirt igneous outcroppings
and old growth forests. At the southern-most
tip, the group of 33 men cut through
the sandy isthmus and hiked up the
shore to Long Beach. The Corp
camped on the Washington
side of the Columbia River in
present-day Pacific County for
18 days. This opened the door
for the first settlers who traveled west from the mid-section
of the U.S. and Scandinavia, and
began the area’s timber and fishing industries. Today oysters, clams,
crab, tuna, halibut, sturgeon, shrimp and
salmon are still pulled from the sea by local fisherman and
cranberry bogs fill the space between the two coasts. But the
main industry is the hospitality accorded to the thousands of
tourists that come to breathe the fresh air, walk the pristine
beach and feast on the local cuisine.

Long Beach
Peninsula
Located in the southern half of Pacific County, the Long
Beach Peninsula sits 115 miles from Portland, Oregon and
165 miles from Seattle, Washington. It’s an ideal destination
for a weekend or a lifetime getaway from the hustle and
bustle of big city life. It’s great to be so close to the ocean
and yet close to urban areas.
With a year-round population of only a few thousand
people, one can walk the many trails and meandering paths,
experiencing the wonderful feeling of isolation and closeness
to natural beauty. On the other hand, there are fairs, festivals
and year-round events to keep the socially-minded occupied.

Gateway to the Long Beach Peninsula from
the Columbia River is the sleepy little village of
Chinook. Once a prosperous community fishing
town, large Chinook salmon were harvested by nets pulled
onto the beach by horses. The old fishing traps are still visible
along the shores. The town still has a small harbor primarily
housing a charter fleet and a commercial shrimping, crabbing
and salmon fishery. For an interesting tour, visit Fort
Columbia State Park Museum where you can view historical
military structures and actually go
inside the bunkers. One of the
largest businesses in the
area is the Bell Buoy
Crab Company, Inc.
Surfside
Just north of Ocean Park is Surfside, a beach community
with a backyard of approximately three miles of Pacific
Ocean. Amenities include several cabanas located on lakes
and canals, walking bridges over waterways and trails to
access the beach. Surfside boasts well-designed and landscaped homes that line the shore and rolling hillsides.
There is a challenging golf course and a growing
community.
Nahcotta and Oysterville
On the western shore of Willapa Bay is
Nahcotta, home of the primary oyster port
in south Pacific County. A great place to
buy fresh or canned oysters and seafood at
the oyster farm, there is also a dock where
you can go crabbing and catch your own.
An interesting visit to the Willapa Bay
Interpretive Center will provide information
about the history of the oyster industry. The center
displays a 20-foot
mural, old photographs
and tools of the oystering trade. The Port of
Peninsula in Nahcotta
is available for moorage
and scenic picnics.

Naselle is rich with history
of Finnish immigrants who
built farms, logged big timber and
caught huge numbers of salmon.
The Appelo Archives Center provides a small local museum, 3,500 historic logging and farming photographs and a
library of Pacific Northwest history, as well as a large Finnish
language and Finnish to English book collection.
Various boat launches scattered throughout the area provide access to excellent fishing on the Columbia River as well
as campsites, hiking trails and the Radar Ridge viewpoint
with magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean, Astoria, the
Oregon coast and the Columbia River. The surrounding lush
forests are a favorite during hunting season, and the beautiful
Naselle River provides a picturesque backdrop during the
annual steelhead and trout fishing season.

Between Long Beach and
Ilwaco where Hwy 101 meets
Hwy 103 sits the historic town of
Seaview. Founded in 1881 as a
summer community that catered
mostly to wealthy Portland families, early vacationers arrived by
steamer, wagon and horseback, often bringing their household staff and stablemen with them. It’s easy to return in time
to those early years by viewing the many handsome 19th
century homes and their gardens. Seaview
was once a depot on the Clamshell
Railroad. That building still
remains on 38th Street, the
main beach approach, and is

Main Street and reading signs telling of it’s past. Only three
miles north is Leadbetter Point. This northernmost peninsula
tip and wildlife refuge has many wonderful forest and beach
trails. Watch for at least 100 species of migratory and upland birds. Among them are

Every year on the fourth of July the community
hosts the biggest fireworks display in the

Walking the main strip from Sid Snyder to

children’s laughter as they ride the merry-goround, bumper cars, Ferris wheel and go-carts.
Between the same avenues, raised above the grassy dunes, a
half-mile boardwalk offers interpretive displays of the local
flora and fauna, and superb views of sand and surf.

up-to-date Internet and cable technology, Long Beach

offers moorage for private sport boats and charter fishing.
A visit to the Heritage Museum in town is an opportunity to
delve into the history of the area. The road continues to Cape
Disappointment State Park covering approximately 6,000
acres of the very southern tip of Washington. This is a spectacular sight where the Columbia River meets the Pacific
Ocean, creating some of the roughest waters in the world and
setting the stage for the U.S. Coast Guard’s world-renowned
life boat training school. There are trails leading through
dense forests with breathtaking views of Benson Beach, where
many shipwrecks were recorded in the “Graveyard of the
Pacific.” A sensational panoramic
view of the area is available from
the nearby Observation Room of
the Lewis and Clark Interpretive
Center as well as from both Cape
Disappointment Lighthouse and
North Head Lighthouse.

Discovery Trail
In honor of the commemoration of the Lewis
and Clark Expedition, the
combined vision and hard work of a consortium of cities
and public agencies has been involved in construction of

fall of 2002. The cities of
Long Beach and Ilwaco,
with the Washington State
Parks and Recreation
Commission, have used
assistance from the
Washington State National
Guard, Air Guard and the
Oregon National Guard to
complete the trail, which

estuaries in the United States. Willapa Bay is
the second largest estuary on the Pacific
Coast and includes over 260 square miles of
water surface. The Refuge was established
in 1937 to protect migrating and wintering
populations of brant, waterfowl, shorebirds,

established at a time when many estuaries
were rapidly being destroyed by diking,
draining, dredging, sedimentation, and
pollution.
The Refuge preserves a number of
unique ecosystems including diverse salt

growth forest, and dynamic coastal dunes.
Visitors to the refuge can enjoy viewing
a wide variety of wildlife, from spawning salmon in the

and the tens of thousands of migrating shorebirds that crowd
the beaches at Leadbetter Point and tidal flats of Willapa Bay.

the south end of the Boardwalk,
and Clark’s Tree, a 19-foot bronze sculpture noting the most

Education
Top Area Employers (2012)
The Ocean Beach School District, located on the beautiful Long Beach Peninsula, has two elementary schools
(Ocean Park and Long Beach) and a middle/high (Ilwaco).
Currently the district
finds itself in a period
of growth as students
and staff enjoy the
support of the community in remodeled
buildings that show the
pride the people have
in their schools.
A comprehensive
academic program
provides a challenging
curriculum to all students tailored to meet
individual needs. All teachers are “Highly Qualified” in
their field of expertise, ensuring students receive the best
education the district can offer. High school students may
choose Advance Placement classes in several curricular
areas or participate in Career and Technical Education
(CTE), and even learn how to operate a business through
Ilwaco Industries.
With a major emphasis on increasing student
achievement faculty set high standards for presenting
engaging lessons and preparing students to live successful
lives as stewards of their world. Staff works collaboratively
to learn from each other. They meet frequently to examine
student assessment data and look for ways to use what
they learn to refine their instructional practices.
The district offers vocal and instrumental music
programs to all students through high school.Visual
and performing arts are highlights at IMHS. The historical
performing arts auditorium is the “stage” upon which
students sing, play, dance and act in performances
throughout the year.
A full complement of extra-curricular opportunities
teaches students how to work as part of a team and
achieve personal goals. Students learn the value of
life-long fitness. The stadium and gyms are normally
packed with community members and parents during
home events.
