Three from UVa elected to ACC Ice Hockey HALL OF FAME.
Ohlschlager, Stephens and Voisinet included in inaugural HOF class.
UVA was a charter member of the ACC Hockey when the ACCHL was established in 1995 with Kareem
El-Alaily as the first captain. Under the coaching of Roger Voisinet (second captain at national powerhouse
Miami University (OH) ) and asst. Gary Jones, UVa Ice Hockey found quick success, winning the inaugural
tournament championship. Led by Captain Brett Stephens, the Cavaliers dominated the ACC schedule
in the early years. After Brett graduated, he and his teammates passed on a winning tradition to a new
group of UVa underclassmen who won a second ACC Championship. This second generation of talented
Cavaliers was led by captain, Chuck Humphrey and anchored by two brothers, Matt and Scott
Ohlschlager. Scott wore the “C” himself his senior year.
“What made this year’s event so memorable was the attendance of so many alumni who were members of the UVA
Championship teams of the 90’s and early 2000’s. In the early years of the ACC Hockey League, UVA dominated the league,
winning the season title five times, and the ACC Tournament Championship twice. Many of the alumni from those championship
years were in attendance at Main Street Arena skating with members of the current UVa team” according to Commissioner
Walley.
Brett, who is currently the CEO of RSR Partners in Greenwich, Connecticut, and Scott, who is a business
analyst in Charlottesville’s Silverchair Information Systems, were in attendance and laced them up for the
2nd Annual UVa Alumni Game. They along with 26 UVa Hockey alumni, took the ice at Main Street
Arena with members of the current team and demonstrated to the young student-athletes that they had not
lost any speed in their stride - Brett and Scott combined for total of 7 points.
For both men, UVa hockey created a lifetime of memories and has become a source of family pride.
Scott recalled many road trips for the ’01-’02 season with his brother, Matt, who growing up, rarely
played on the same teams. Brett recalled “The University of Virginia holds a special place in my heart as
my father (Jim Stephens) was the Athlete of the Year at UVa in the 1960s having been the Captain of the
tennis and soccer teams. He later became the varsity tennis, soccer and golf coach at UVa.” Both men,
along with their coach, Roger Voisinet, have been honored by being voted into the ACC Hockey Hall of
Fame, Voisinet, the only unanimous selection.
Due to the solid foundation set by these men and hundreds of alumni almost two decades ago, UVa
hockey continues to compete at the top of the ACCHL, and is the winningest team in ACC Hockey
history. “It was a professional honor and personal privilege to have met these exceptional UVa alumni
and to have skated on the same ice as the current ACC Hockey Commissioner” said Commissioner
Walley.
