C E N T E R
AN INVITATION
FROM OUR
PRESIDENT & CEO,
JOHN SCHREIBER
WYNTON
MARSALIS
Dear Friend of the Arts Center:
“Bit by bit, putting it together…
Piece by piece, only way to make a work of art.
Every moment makes a contribution.
Every little detail plays a part.”
Stephen Sondheim – Sunday in the Park with George
Sondheim tells us that “art isn’t easy,” but somehow, magically, it appears that way when the
right pieces are arranged into an incredible mosaic of talent.
Here’s just a sample of what we’ve enjoyed putting together for the 2015-16 season:
Wynton Marsalis. Garrison Keillor. Mystic India: The World Tour. Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Dance Theatre of Harlem. Jerry Seinfeld. Disney FANTASIA: Live in Concert. The Little Orchestra
Society’s Babes in Toyland. Neil deGrasse Tyson. Michael Feinstein’s Sinatra Centennial celebration.
George Clinton and P-Funk. Dianne Reeves. Ken Burns. Bernadette Peters and Jethro Tull.
And about 120 other unforgettable, entertaining, enriching and life-enhancing evenings.
That’s what’s in store for you as you page through the most exciting and ambitious season in NJPAC history.
You told us you wanted artistic excellence, fun, diversity and surprises.
Trust me, we’ve been listening.
So whether it’s Ballet Folklórico de México, Johnny Mathis, the return of the TD James Moody Jazz Festival, Arlo Guthrie or Ina Garten—
the Barefoot Contessa—we’re convinced that by the time you’re done flipping through this brochure, you’ll be visiting us online or calling to secure your
seats for a host of shows.
Every season, more than 400,000 friends enjoy a performance in one of our theaters: presentations in jazz, folk, blues, classical, pop, gospel, world music,
American song, dance, family, film, comedy and more.
Our lineup is a true labor of love, built to delight, and as varied as the citizens who call NJPAC their cultural home.
And we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Even though there’s always something wonderful happening on our concert stages, the NJPAC experience is defined by so much more. Over 60,000
students each season dedicate time and talents to the high-quality programs and performances of the Arts Education Department. Many free events,
like Family Fair at Theater Square, are designed to make the Arts Center accessible to everyone.
And stay tuned for updates: From the start of the 2015-16 season to its end, we’ll be adding at least 100 new shows!
I look forward to greeting you often in the months to come.
All the best,
John Schreiber

Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto
Beethoven: Symphony No. 8
Copland: Orchestral Variations/Inscape/

Schumann: Symphony No. 2 in C
“It will never please the public,” said
Tchaikovsky of his Fifth Symphony. Yet its
beautiful melodies have captivated for over a
century. One of today’s most dynamic
maestros, Daniele Gatti, leads one of the
greatest of all French ensembles, Orchestre
National de France, in Tchaikovsky’s Fifth.
Plus, Julian Rachlin plays the fiery First Violin
Concerto of Shostakovich. “The real thing,”
declares the Los Angeles Times. “A virtuoso
with heart.”
“A thoroughly serious, intelligent musician,”
raves the Financial Times of London. The Boston
Herald declares his playing is “direct, honest
and a joy to hear.” Audiences around the globe
have cheered the phenomenal Joshua Bell.
Now, he brings his Academy of St Martin in
the Fields to NJPAC, conducting delightful
symphonies of Beethoven and Prokofiev, and
playing Tchaikovsky’s blazing Violin Concerto.
“The level of musicianship week after week,
year after year, remains a marvel.” So declares
the San Francisco Chronicle of one of music’s
most kinetic partnerships—Michael Tilson
Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony.
With their boundless energy, imagination and
virtuosity, MTT and SFS shine in Schumann’s
joyous Second Symphony, and in a trio of
Copland masterworks.
The NJSO and NJPAC are thrilled to
welcome superstar soprano Jessye Norman,
a legendary performer of electrifying
magnitude. Her program with conductor
Jacques Lacombe and the NJSO centers
on songs of American life, from the Great
American Songbook to Spirituals. Don’t miss
the pairing of Norman and Lacombe in this
once-in-a-lifetime experience.

… A stellar cast of vocalists and musicians including Tom Wopat, Sue
Raney and Kevin Mahogany perform songs that might not even exist
if it weren’t for Frank Sinatra. This program focuses on some of the
greatest songs ever written—because they were inspired, commissioned, published and sometimes even composed by Sinatra. Classic
tunes will be played the way they were meant to be heard, with top
vocalists and finger-snapping arrangements. Ticket holders are invited
to attend a pre-concert panel discussion, Sinatra Standard Time, with
Sinatra historian and author Charles L. Granata.
A constellation of the most in-demand singers and musicians,
directed by award-winning jazz pianist and composer Billy Stritch,
perform “All the Way,” “High Hopes” and other great songs written
for Frank Sinatra’s three decades as a Hollywood headliner.
Whether dancing with Gene Kelly in On the Town, singing with Bing
Crosby in High Society or shooting dice with Marlon Brando in Guys
and Dolls, many of our favorite moments with Sinatra are from his
vast and storied movie career. The concert is preceded at 4pm

Herbert’s holiday classic Babes in Toyland
includes your favorite toy characters
performing “March of the Toys,” “Toyland”
and other sparkling music. James Judd
conducts a cast of 18 singing and dancing
toys, a lovable Toymaker and his young
apprentice, a dastardly team of
entrepreneurial villains, and an army of
more than 100 toy soldiers. This colorful
production is a not-to-be-missed
holiday treat!
This delightful musical production, featuring
a hit score by Bob Marley (“One Love”) and
based on the children’s book by his daughter,
Cedella Marley, tells of young Ziggy, who
is so terrified of hurricanes, mongooses
and other things in his native Jamaica that
he’s afraid to leave the house! Adding to his
apprehension is the lurking presence of a
bogeyman named Duppy, who sneaks up on
people and steals their hair.
