June 2013 How places have changed! How our focus has changed! Cairnmillar has been a presence in Melbourne for 52 years. There was a time when we had centres at Blackburn, Beaumaris and Doveton. There was a time when we trained many people to be telephone counsellors with Citizens’ Advice Bureaux in several suburbs. For over 25 years we have placed a strong emphasis on two initial populations in our wider community. First, our work with Kindergarten Field Officers focussed on the mental and emotional health of Kindergarten children aged 4 – 6 years. Our concern has been to help children who are emotionally Today we have counselling centres affected by child abuse, domestic at Camberwell, Highpoint, violence, the loss of a parent, the Maribyrnong, Springvale and a joint disintegration of the family and venture in the city of Melbourne. many behavioural problems. Today, over a thousand doctors refer people to us. This is what we aim to do: To advance the psychological health and well-being of people at all ages. To improve the quality of life through counselling, psychotherapy, and community education. To improve community and personal knowledge and growth. To provide psychological counselling and therapy programs, individual, interpersonal, group and family therapy. The 20 Year Focus Parents want to do all they can to enhance the first 20 years of their children’s lives. Older adults as they reach 70 look to how they can enhance the next 20 years of their own lives. At 70, Bernie has been retired five years. His marriage has lost much of its earlier anticipation. His wife has her problems. And Bernie himself finds friends are becoming less, his children now grown-up, have their lives to live. He carries a load of resentment. He worries. He is overweight and rarely exercises. He says “old age is creeping up”. What will the NEXT 20 years have for him? Cairnmillar can offer people like Bernie ways to look forward to their next 20 years. We are developing programs that build on the SAGE groups that have assisted people of 55 grow and engage with life in the years leading to, and after, retirement.
