The First International Conference on Existential Psychology in Nanjing,
China, in April of 2010, emerged from several years of work in China
focusing on dialogues about existential psychology across cultures. This
included identifying indigenous Chinese existential psychologies, such as Zhi
Mian Therapy developed by Xuefu Wang, and bringing them into dialogue
with Western existential approaches. The conference was organized by Louis
Hoffman, Mark Yang, and Xuefu Wang, and included keynotes by Kirk
Schneider, Xuefu Wang, Erik Craig, Ilene Serlin, & Ed Mendelowitz. Other
US/Canada attendees included Rich Bargdill, Heatherlyn Cleare-Hoffman,
Trent Claypool, Michael Moats, Jason Dias, Elizabeth Saxon, Nathan Lorentz,
Anthony Nkyi, Jim Ungvarsky, Jim Oraker, Paul Wong, & Susan Gordan.

Carl Rogers (left) and Alberto Zucconi in Rome, 1979. Together, the
two founded the Institute for the Person Centered Approach (IACP),
an international organization that pioneered this form of Rogerian
psychotherapy. In this method, the therapist undertakes a
collaborative style, partnering with the patient to achieve deep
personal growth. The IACP performs research and training involving
Client Centered Therapy that emphasizes the importance of an
“unconditional positive regard” between therapist and patient.! In
addition, the IACP has collaborations and affiliations with numerous
mental health institutions including the World Health Organization
(WHO), the International Labor Office (ILO), and the United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), so that
the IACP is now a global force in the advancement of humanistic
psychology.

Buddhist Psychology
Dr. Alan Pope performs inquiry into Buddhist principles,
such as compassion and forgiveness , in order to expand
the practice of psychology to one of spiritual
transformation. His studies and practice of Tibetan
Buddhism have taken him to India, Nepal, and Vietnam.
Dr. Ilene Serlin (Front right) leads a dance called “Peace Train”
with a group of Israelis. She has done a great deal of work
with people affected by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,
including war widows and their children, focusing on dance
therapy to promote post-traumatic growth. Expressive arts
therapy harnesses the power of the mind-body connection to
encourage healing through movement. Dr. Serlin also
presented a workshop on dance therapy in Nanjing, China
following on the First International Conference on Existential
Psychology.
