ABOUT THIS SECTION
The Lima News’ 2016 Best of the Region is back,
marking 21 years of asking residents of the area their
opinions on their favorite places to shop, relax and
eat.
This special section is your guide to the winning
businesses or things to do in each category. We profile
the top three places in each category and name honorable mentions when numbers were close.
The Lima News presented a ballot with 40 categories on which to vote. Ballots were available at limaohio.com and in the newspaper itself.
The rules: The businesses or locations needed to
be within a seven-county region — Allen, Auglaize,
Hardin, Logan, Mercer, Putnam or Van Wert counties.
Voting started June 9 and continued through noon
July 28.
• The following winners received four tickets each
to Cedar Point: Angie Snider, of Elida; Cheryl Fraley,
of Elida; and Kory Hermiller, of Ottawa.

walk or run it. Held each June, this race begins at St. Gerard, and includes a
1-mile sprint for the young ones.

Best High School Football Rivalry
2016
1. BATH
VS. ELIDA
They’ve played
in the WBL
together for
decades and both
usually have competitive teams
that are evenly
matched. What
more do you need
for a good game of
football?
2. ELIDA VS.
SHAWNEE
This region is
filled with players who came up
together, learning
the sport from a
very age. The kids
on these teams
know each other
because of that
exposure, and
competition will
ensue.
Bath vs. Elida football always gets the crowd going.
3. DELPHOS JEFFERSON VS. SPENCERVILLE
With only 10 miles separating these schools, and the schools themselves
being like each other, a rivalry was bound to crop up. Add in that they’ve been
in the Northwest Conference since 1947, and the fact that the last two years
the schools have gone down to the wire with each other, and magic happens.

Best High School Boys’ Basketball Rivalry
2016
1. LIMA CENTRAL CATHOLIC VS. LIMA SENIOR
It’s the big Lima schools, public vs. private. The Lima Cup contest has proven
to be exciting and draw big crowds.
2. OTTOVILLE VS. KALIDA
The schools, only eight miles apart, are competitive in the Putnam County
League. And then there’s the Dick Kortokrax coaching wrinkle: he did well for
decades at Kalida after graduating from Ottoville.
3. DELPHOS ST. JOHN’S VS. LIMA CENTRAL CATHOLIC
Two Catholic schools, check. Usually exciting match-ups, check. Older folks
who remember the St. John’s/St. Rose contests, check.
Honorable mentions:
Bath vs. Elida, Lima Central Catholic vs. Ottawa-Glandorf, Elida vs. Shawnee

Best High School Girls’ Basketball Rivalry
1. BATH VS. SHAWNEE
These are girls who live in close proximity to each other and know
each other — and that spurs a good competition.
2. LIMA CENTRAL CATHOLIC VS. LIMA SENIOR
They’re the “big” schools in town who can put good teams on the
court, and each would like nothing more than coming out on top.
3. OTTOVILLE VS. DELPHOS ST. JOHN’S
Again, it’s a proximity battle. The schools are similar, the athletes are
serious, and the games are fun to watch.
A good game can be expected when it’s Bath vs. Shawnee girls’ basketball.

Best High School Mascot
2016
1. LIMA SENIOR
Sparty is on social media, and he is everywhere the Spartans are —
even making visits to elementary schools to excite at all levels.
2. ELIDA
Legend has it, Elida’s football program was beginning in the 1930s.
Men started to raise money to buy St. Rose’s used uniforms. One of the
big donors also raised bulldogs, and thus a mascot was born.
3. OTTAWA-GLANDORF

hearts of their opponents.
