Campbell Point still open after storm damage

Significant damage was
done to seven boats and two
piers at Campbell Point Marina on Table Rock Lake last
Thursday, June 5. Contractors began clean-up of the
storm damage last week, but
it could be six months before
the docks are repaired or replaced.
According to Gene Stimble, owner of Campbell Point
Marina leased through the
U.S. Army Crops of Engineers, the storm only lasted
five to ten minutes, but the
damaged to the two piers
that contained houseboats
was significant. Stimble said,
“The one dock was completely annihilated and thrown
into the other dock which
didn’t experience the same
extent of damage. That second pier still has the under
structure intact, but we are
going to pull it all out to rebuild it.”
Despite the damage to
the marina, the other four
piers at Campbell Point were
unscathed and the campgounds and facilities were
not damaged. According to
Greg Oller, Table Rock Lake
manager, “We had the two
docks destroyed, but the
campground was fine. We
did have several trees, maybe
20 to 25, that were twisted
and destroyed, but a contractor came out on Friday and
already has that all cleaned
up. We don’t want this to stop
anyone from coming down
and using the facilities. We
are still open and only the
two docks were affected.”
Stimbel added, “Our gas
dock, store and rental boats
are all fine. We definitely
want people to know that we
are still open for business.”

Man dead after officer-involved shooting

A man is dead after being shot by a Cassville Police
Officer following an assault
Tuesday morning.
According to Cassville Chief of Police Dana
Kammerlohr, Cpl. Donald
Privett, a longtime veteran
of the department, was dispatched around 7:30 a.m.
on a 911 call about a disturbance in progress. The officer arrived at apartments
at 600 Old Exeter Road in
Cassville where an altercation began between the suspect and officer.
The suspect, identified
as Jonathan Thomas, 25,
of Cassville, then assaulted
Privett with a pipe before
he discharged his firearm,
striking Thomas. Both
Privett and Thomas were
transported to hospitals
for their injuries. Thomas
died en route via EMS to a
Springfield hospital from
the injuries he received.
Privett was treated for his
injuries from the assault at
Mercy Hospital in Cassville.
He was released from the
hospital the same day.
A formal investigation
is being conducted by the
Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Barry County
Sheriff ’s Office. The officer
has been placed on routine
administrative leave pending the findings of that investigation.
Barry County Fair under new management

This year will mark the
first year of the long-running Barry County Fair under new management.

and Karen Mitchell, and
Jerry and Sherry Sanders are
taking over the fair in hopes
of giving the event a fresh
start. Sherry Sanders stated,
“We’re just really trying to
make the fair a great atmosphere for the kids of Barry
County and surrounding
counties. We want them
to come to be able to show
their animals and have a
great time.”
Sanders said this is the
third year that the fair will
be held at the Rockin’ P
Ranch in Wheaton. While
the fair has been a long-running event in the county, the
location has changed over
the years, as has the format
of the animal showings.
This year, the deadline
is today. However, Sanders
said that they will be taking
late entries. She stated, “If
they haven’t turned in their
registration, we will still take
them, no problem.”
The fair is open to anyone five years of age up
through the summer after
their graduating year of high
school. Kids do not have to
be FFA or 4-H members to
participate. Sander said, “As
long as they can control and
show their own animal, they
are welcome to come participate.”
This year, the fair will
take place on a single day
instead of over two days.
Sanders said, “We’re going
to have it all on one day due
to the fewer entries in the
last few years so that people
don’t have to drive back and
forth.” This year, the fair is
on Saturday, June 21.
Events to watch for in-
clude a biscuits and gravy
breakfast for $4, a premium
sale dinner of smoked chicken and sides for $5 at 5:30
p.m. and the Premium Sale
at 7 p.m. Sanders said, “We
had someone donate a heifer
for the Premium Sale, so we
are hoping that people come
out to see what we have.”
Shows will include dairy,
beef cattle, hogs, goats,
sheep poultry and rabbits.
Booths are still available
at the event for $25 each.
Vendors must provide their
own table. Vendors are not
required to preregister for
the fair to set up.

Campbell Point Marina
isn’t responsible for any repairs on the seven boats that
were damaged. Stimbel said,
“With an act of God like that,
it’ll be on the owners and
their insurance to cover any
damages since it wasn’t negligence on our part.”
The campground part of
Campbell Point is managed
by the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers. While there were
many campers on site during
the storm, no injuries were
reported from the storm.
Clean up of the marina is
expected to begin on Thursday and last seven to ten
days. Stimbel stated, “We already had the insurance adjuster come down and take
a look at everything. They
are in the process of getting
bids and we expect the work
to be completed within six
months.” At this time, there
has not been an official damage estimate provided by the
insurance company.
State Rep. Scott Fitzpatrick applauded a decision
this week by the Arkansas
PSC to halt a project that
would run a massive power
line through southern Barry
County. The PSC made the
decision that the Southwestern Power Company
(SWEPCO) must show additional evidence on the
need for, and the potential
environmental impact of,
the proposed 345 kV project
before proceeding.
Fitzpatrick said the ruling will allow opponents
valuable time to continue
their efforts to permanently
stop a project that would
provide no additional electricity to Missouri homes
and businesses but would
threaten the property rights
of many Missouri residents.
“These massive power lines would cut a path
through our part of the state
and would force land owners to sell portions of their
property with absolutely no
benefit to any Missouri resident. It makes no sense to
allow this project to move
forward in Missouri when
you consider how strongly
the negatives outweigh the
positives,” said Fitzpatrick,
R-Shell Knob. “I am glad to
see the Arkansas PSC is now
moving to put the brakes on
this plan. I am hopeful that
SWEPCO and the Arkansas
PSC have received the message that we are not going
to lie down and accept this
project in Missouri without
a fight.”
Fitzpatrick and Sen. David Sater sponsored legislation during the 2014 legislative session to protect land
owners from the project
had it moved forward. Fitzpatrick’s bill (HB 1774) and
Sater’s bill (SB 839) would
have prohibited SWEPCO
from using the power of
eminent domain to forcibly
take the land necessary for
the towers and power lines.
“The fight may not be
completely over, but the
battle is won,” said Fitzpatrick. “SWEPCO will likely
continue to seek approval
to build this line, but I am
optimistic that, after seeing
the opposition mounted by
Missourians, they will elect
to steer clear of the Show Me
State.”

Investigation launched on TRL drowning death

A joint investigation
by state agencies has been
launched into the death of
a woman who drowned last
week in Barry County.
Sheriff Mick Epperly
says the Missouri Water Patrol and the Highway Patrol
launched an investigation
into the drowning death of
Linglong Li “because it’s suspicious in nature.”
Epperly says 25 year-old
Li, who lived in Carthage
and was an inexperienced
swimmer, was a newlywed
who had immigrated to the
United States in the last year.
Li, her husband and two
other relatives had been
camping near the Viola Ma-
rina for a few days before the
woman died. “He [her husband] was teaching her to
swim that day,” Epperly said.
The man said that he left his
wife alone to snorkle while
he cooked at the campsite,
according to Epperly.
“It took them awhile to
report her death,” the Sheriff
said.

Mrs. Searl, daughter of Ivan
and Thelma "Babe" (Nodine)
Stephens, was born on March
10, 1941, in Washburn. She
was united in marriage to
E.H. "Pete" Searl on April
6, 1959; he preceded her in
death on April 19, 1993. Mrs.
Searl was a school bus driver
for the Washburn R-V School
district for 35 years; she loved
all the children that she had
every year. Gospel music
and singing were her passion;
she sang at many funerals
and gatherings, and loved
listening to the McKameys'
gospel singing group. Mrs.
Searl loved to crochet and

he married Ilene Comstock
in Barstow, California, and
then they came back to Eagle
Rock, Missouri, to farm. Ilene
was a faithful companion,
partner and a great singer.
After a few years, they both
felt God was calling them
into the Gospel ministry and
enrolled in Southwest Baptist
College in Bolivar, Missouri,
in 1956. He then attended
Baylor University in Waco,
Texas. He went on to Golden
Gate Baptist Seminary in
California. Before Varl went
to Golden Gate in California,
his home church, Roaring
River Baptist Church, wanted
to honor him by ordaining
him. This was uncommon
to do this before having a
pastorate and it meant a lot
to Varl and Ilene. He attended
Sacramento State College to
obtain a teaching certificate
and taught at Valley View
Elementary for three years, a
small county school outside
of Auburn, California.
Together, he and Ilene
were married forty-nine years
and had four children, Tony,
Carol, Artie and Kyle. Ilene
went home to heaven on
January 9, 2004. Varl stated
that, "I wanted my life to

82, of Eagle Rock, Missouri,
home to Heaven, Wednesday,
June 4, 2014. Varl passed
away in his home.
He was born October 31,
1931, in Eagle Rock, the son
of Ethel and Edith (Carter)
Ball. He accepted Christ
as Savior at the age of nine
and was baptized in the
membership of Roaring River
Baptist Church in Eagle Rock,
Missouri. His parents were
very active in the work of the
church and he was taught the
importance of loyalty to the
church and the Christian life.
Varl was drafted into the
United States Marines and
served from 1952 until 1954
in Barstow, California. This
is where God opened his
vision to the greater needs of

where his grandpa Carter
pastored and preached at the
turn of the century, and was
assistant Pastor at Roaring
River Baptist Church in Eagle
Rock, Missouri.
Surviving are his children,
Tony Ball and his wife, Glenda,
of Wheaton, Missouri, Carol
Harvick and her husband,
Carlton, of Crowley, Texas,
Artie Pearson and her
husband, Rick, of Hermitage,
Missouri, and Kyle Altic
and her husband, Andy, of

Nickiey was enlisted in
the United States Army and
served in Korea from 1967 to
1971. He lived in Wheaton,
Missouri, for several years
and worked as a truck driver
for Hollaway Transportation.
While living in Missouri, he
attended the Freewill Baptist
Church in Purdy, Missouri.
Nickiey was a member of
American Legion Post #384
in Hoopeston. He loved
working on cars, fishing,
hunting, and camping and in
his younger year’s horseback
riding. Nickiey was a very
giving person who loved
making new friends and
making people laugh. He
loved spending time with
his family and friends and
every child knew him as
“Uncle Nickiey”. Nickiey
also enjoyed playing with his
dogs, Gidget and Molly.
Private family services
for Nickiey will be held at a
later date. According to his
wishes, cremation rites have
been accorded by the BrownAlkire Funeral Chapel. He will
be laid to rest in the Rankin
Union Cemetery. Memorials
may be made in his name to
the American Cancer Society.

heavy equipment mechanic.

Veterans and attended the

her husband, Steven. In
September 1983, they moved
to Missouri, where they
owned and operated Trotter’s
Village Market in Exeter for
eighteen years. Christine
then followed her childhood
dream and attended the
Franklin Technology Center
in Joplin, Missouri, where
she graduated in June 2003,
with her Practical Nursing
Degree. From April 2004
until February 2011, she
was employed by St. John’s
Hospital-Cassville as an LPN
and also worked at St. Mary’s
Hospital in Rogers, Arkansas,
in Medical/Surgery. She was
a hospice volunteer for Mercy
Hospice from 2011 until her
death.

by the sudden death of
long-time Court Recorder
Lori Cantwell, 45, last week.
Cantwell, in the Recorder’s position since July
1994, died on Sunday of an
apparent heart attack, leaving a void for both courthouse and Judicial Center
employees. Cantwell ran
the Recorder’s Office with
her assistant Cathy Arnold.
County Circuit Clerk
Craig Williams stated,
“Lori was a good Christian
woman who really had her
priorities straight She put
God first and family second in her life. She will be
sorely and greatly missed
by my office.” Other county
employees will remember
Cantwell for her faith and
strength of character that
she exhibited over the many
years with the County.
Cantwell’s visitation was
last Wednesday evening
and funeral was Thursday
at the Family Life Center
in Cassville with pastors

many years, and the upcoming event will allow community members to purchase chances to win $1,000
to Shell Knob Chamber of

to host weekend shoot-out
Cassville High School announced today that it’s boys’
basketball team will host a
varsity and junior varsity
shootout with several local
area teams.
This Saturday, Cassville
will be joined with Aurora,
Exeter, Golden City Haas
Hall, McDonald County,
Seneca, and Reeds Spring to
compete in a summer contest
where each team will play
four games and participate
in a single elimination twominute tournament at the
end of the day.
Varsity teams will be
competing in Cassville’s High
School and Middle School
Gyms from 8 AM to 6 PM,
and junior varsity teams will
be competing at the Family
Life Center from 8 AM to 3
PM. All community members are encouraged to come
up and support their Wildcats and get a sneak peak for
next season.
An all-day pass can be
purchased at each facility for
only $1. This pass will allow
admittance to any gym. Each
facility will also provide concessions.

cuts from lost casino revenue

On Tuesday, May 20,
Governor Jay Nixon stated
an extra $35 million is being
cut from educational funds.
Public schools and universities are concerned about decreasing state revenues from
casino taxes, as well as lottery
sales.
The most recent spending cuts have not yet affected
classrooms due to the end of
the school year. “It’s going to
force a lot of school boards
and superintendents to do
some scrambling here toward
the end of the fiscal year to
make some budget adjustments,” Nixon said. In April
Nixon had announced another educational restriction
of $22 million, also an effect
of casino taxes and lottery
sales declining.
In the most recent round
of cuts, Missouri’s K-12 funding formula will lose $24.6
million. This year, the total
decrease in funds is over $40
million. Universities will be
impacted by a loss of $10.5
million, as well.
The Missouri Gaming As-
sociation has contributed to
the decreases from the recent
economic decline and harsh
wintery weather. Competition arose from a new casino
located in Kansas City. Kansas could also play a role in
the decrease of Missouri’s
revenue, as could the change
in ownership of the St. Louis
casino. Budget Director for
Nixon, Linda Luebbering,
said the reason for the slumping lottery revenues “is a little
bit less known” but could depend on the number of large
jackpots that can spur a surge
in ticket sales.
The state budget from this
year acquired $343 million
from casino revenues and
$312 from lottery profits to
fulfill education appropriations, which would have been
a 4.2 percent growth in casino revenues and a 7.9 percent growth in lottery profits
versus the previous year. The
equaled decline from casino
revenues is 6.0 percent and
the decline from lottery profits is 4.9 percent compared to
last year’s revenues.

A Cape Fair man was injured after his motorcycle
flipped south of Viola last
week.
Kenneth Vucovich, 66,
was riding a 2006 Honda
motorcycle on MO 39 one
mile south of Viola when he
left the roadway on a curve,
lost control and overturned
his motorcycle, according to
the Missouri State Highway
Patrol. Vucovich was taken
to the Cox Branson Hospital
with moderate injuries.

of her 27 great-grandchildren. The children ranged from 3
months to 10 years old.
The fourth annual Barry County Youth Livestock Show
was held at the Cassville rodeo arena.
Top professional cowboys, a pig scramble, and the nation’s finest rodeo specialty act highlighted the 37th Cassville Rotary Rodeo.

One such individual, Joe
Still, was especially honored
this day for his sacrifice
during WWII, a portion of
that time spent as a POW
in the Pacific; forfeiting two
years of his life - a true hero
and so deserving of the special recognition he received
today.

deceased, Central Crossing
Senior Center put on probably it’s best cookout yet.
On Friday, May 30, 2014,
CCSC hosted on a belated
Veterans’ Day celebration;
however, everyone showed
up early to honor the service of our brave men and
women who’ve served this
country. Veterans from all
services, including the U.S.
Coast Guard, were honored
and veterans from several
conflicts and wars were represented as well. Bill Wood,
the Shell Knob area VFW
Chaplin, gave the invocation. David Atkinson, VFW
Post Commander, officiated
the event. Dave pointed out
that when a veteran signs
up for service in the U.S.
Military, he/she writes a
blank check to the nation,
Lea. This special cookout
would not have been possible were it not for their
charity and love of the community. OJ Thompson and
his staff, as well as a great
many volunteers, gave of
their time and talents to
make this celebration one
to remember. If you would
like to be a part of the volunteering fun, stop by the
Central Crossing Center

the Charter Bank Scholarship in the amount of $100. He
planned to attend the University of Missouri.
The Cassville First Assembly of God held a MotherDaughter Banquet in honor of Mother’s Day. The banquet
was sponsored by the Missionette Department and the
theme was “Hat’s Off to Mom.”
Evelyn Stansbury, of Cassville, was the lucky winner of
$100 in groceries at Baker Seely Market.

Jared Strother was chosen from Purdy High School to
attend Missouri Boys State on the campus of Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg.
Jeff Houts, vice president of Boatmen’s Bank in Cassville,
was named as the president of the new facility in Shell Knob.
Over 92 percent of Cassville residents voting in the special bond election voted “Yes” to the issuance of $1.2 million
in bonds to fund capital improvements to the City’s sewer
and water plants and extend the existing half-cent sales tax
to repay the bonds.

The CenturyTel Company, with service in the Cassville,
Exeter, Mano and Washburn areas, offered dial-up with
Zommer (Internet Accelerator), for an interim solution to
broadband.
Missouri Secretary of State Matt Blunt announced that
Barry County Genealogical and Historical Society had received a Missouri Historical Records grant fro $1,037.80.
This week, gasoline prices for a gallon of gas fell to $1.79
at local stations. It was a 10 cent per gallon decrease comparatively.

4th quarter Honor Roll
Cassville tech students compete in TEAM contest
Cassville Middle School Industrial Technology students participated in the Technology Education Association of Missouri (TEAM) state contest on May 6. There were 85 schools across the state who participated in the event. Of those,
600 high school and middle school students were in attendance with 450 projects on display during the project fair.
Students were required to write a technical report and take a written test along with their project entries. High school students also
had opportunities to compete for scholarships and meet with college recruiters. $22,500 in scholarships were awarded to graduating
seniors during the event.
Several Cassville students came away with first place honors for their projects and participation in on-site engineering challenges. Austin Wilson, Jordan Reed, Dillon Foltz, Jacob Smith and Braden Strahan all won their respective events.

additional Tribal benefits if they participate in certain
additional federal eligibility programs. The Lifeline
discount is available for only one telephone per
household, which can be either a wireline or wireless
telephone. A household is defined for the purposes
of the Lifeline program as any individual or group of
individuals who live together at the same address
and share income and expenses. Lifeline service is
not transferable, and only eligible consumers may
enroll in the program. Consumers who willfully make
false statements in order to obtain Lifeline telephone
service can be punished by fine or imprisonment and
can be barred from the program.
Lifeline eligible subscribers may also qualify for
reliable home high-speed Internet service up
to 1.5 Mbps for $9.95* per month for the first 12
