2009 KEURING REPORTS
BIENI WINS THE GERT VAN DER VEEN AWARD
uted to the economic recession. One
has to remember that attending a
keuring in North America is significantly more expensive than in Holland because of the large distances
travelled, which also means added
costs for stabling and hotels.
Foals
Bieni; photo by Jan Philippo
The jury saw some very good
foals this year during the two
KWPN-NA keuring tours.
A number of the foals measure up
very well against foals in Holland that
participated in the National Foal Keuring. Ferro and Jazz are still popular in
North America and produced the number one and two dressage foals. The
top group of older horses was a little
smaller than last year. The best scoring
was the Cardento daughter, Bieni,
with two 80s making up her upper
beam score.
Besides evaluating conformation
and movement of horses, the jury also
taught a course about history, conformation, movement, and judging of
KWPN horses during two days of the
second keuring. Sadly, there was not
enough interest in Florida during the
first tour for the jury to teach the
course.

The number of horses and foals
seen this year was a little fewer than in
previous years, which could be attrib-
The colt Eclipse LPR (Ferro x
Passandra by Wellington x Flemmingh) received the highest honor of
all the dressage foals and therefore
led the Top Fives. The long-lined foal

body and a good neck that is also used
well in movement. His trot and canter

model and a lot of movement. UB-40,
Sir Sinclair and Rousseau also have
striking offspring in the top of the
rankings.
The best jumper foal was presented during the second tour, with Bart
Henstra as the head of the jury, at the
keuring at Claybrook Farm in Michigan. Encore CBF is an Indoctro son
out of the keur mare Pikina Field
(Corland x Pele, bred by G.J. Koerhuis). The second place foal Eeyanette
RGS (s. Veron) also has an imported
mother, Larinette keur (Acord II x
Ahorn, bred by VDL). Also shown
were good foals by Mr. Blue and

power and good leg technique.
Nancy Debosek is the breeder and
owner. She bought the mare Passandra, bred by W. Wiersma, in Holland.
Zinda, Passandra’s grandmother, is
also the grandmother of international
jumpers Authentic and Olinda, and
the mother of the stallion Haydn.
The Jazz son Encore was presented at Iron Spring and finished in second place. Encore is out of a mother
that was bred in the U.S., Aloha S.E.
(Sir Sinclair x Kadence keur pref by
Wanroij). This is a foal with a good

Adult Horses
Besides classes for foals there were
studbook inspection classes for adult
horses, where – after announcing the
upper beam scores – mares that
receive the ster predicate come back to
be evaluated for keur eligibility, as in
Holland at the Central Keuring.
Leading the dressage mares was
Beyonce (Contango x Precious Day
ster by Gribaldi x Rossini, bred by
Gwen Blake), as the mare with the
best trot. Rounding out the top were
the strongly built Armani (Sydney x
Ramona by Weyden x Ahorn Z, bred
by N. Krol); the Florencio daughter
and best mare at the Iron Spring keuring Bardot S.E. (d. Natuur by Wanroij,
bred by Siegi Belz-Fry) and Bling!

One of the most outstanding
dressage gelding in the Top Fives
was Brando (Florencio x Volckmar
x Wanroij) owned by sisters Amber
and Ashlyn DeGroot, who earned
the second highest upper beam
score. Fifteen-year old Ashlyn is
very successfully riding the stallion
Idocus and also had a good ride on
Brando in the DG Bar Cup. Another
outstanding gelding, who was not eli-

Prima Equestrian, also near Toronto, presented Beyond P, an Ahorn
daughter who earned the keur predicate after a successful IBOP.
Fourteen-year old Nutmegan
(Fairplay x Tamara ster prest by Idool
x Goudsmid) was accepted as a
Gelders horse, and earned her ster and
keur eligibility. She has a strong trot
and shows much self-carriage in her
movement.

gible for the Top Fives because he had
not yet completed his additional Register A requirements, was Bolero NSN
(Sir Donnerhall x Rhumba ster by
Idocus x Wanroij, owner/breeder
Martha Haley in Nova Scotia). He
earned 85 points for his trot.
Bieni, bred by M. van Gils, out
of Tieni, a full sister to the stallion
Nobility (Lux x Wagenaar) was the
best jumper mare. With her quick
reflexes and good manner of going
she scored 80 points for jumping as
well as conformation. The mare is
now located near Toronto at River
Cross Farm.
Besides being shown in hand, the
studbook evaluation and the IBOPs,
the talent of three- to five- year old
dressage and jumper horses is also
evaluated under saddle in the DG Bar
Cup and the Iron Spring Farm Cup.

2009 KEURING REPORTS
SECOND KEURING TOUR
During the break there was a nice
presentation of the Iron Spring Farm
stallions, including presentations
under the saddle by UB-40 and the
new addition to the Iron Spring stallion line-up, the Westfalen approved
stallion Florianus (Florestan).

Iron Spring Farm
The second keuring tour started at
Iron Spring Farm with the studbook
entry of the older horses. The best dressage horse was Bardot S.E., owned and
bred by Siegi Belz-Fry. The Florencio
daughter, out of Natuur ster by Wanroij, has a good top line, although the
croup is a bit sloping. In the trot she
shows good technique but could be
more uphill, and especially the canter
has good balance and power. Bardot
earned her ster and was also keur eligible. The feminine Beatrice VDL
(Prestige x Silvano) also earned her
ster and was keur eligible. Beatrice,
owned by Paard Hill Farms, is fineboned but shows good quality and the
canter shows good reach and power.
The long-legged dressage gelding
Bien Sir ISF (Sir Sinclair) also
received a ster predicate. Bautista
(Rhodium) and Be Brave ISF (Consul)
are eligible for the star predicate with a
passing IBOP.
Andorra ISF (Sir Sinclair) earned
her keur predicate with her 77 points in
the IBOP. Andorra ISF (owner/breeder
Iron Spring Farm) has good reach in
her front leg and shows good ridebility. Andorra also received the highest
score of the day in the DG Bar Cup.
After the break Blue SCF (Balou
du Rouet) was the highest scoring
jumper. The Register A mare will earn
her star predicate when she meets her
additional requirements. Blue SCF
(owner/breeder Dr. and Mrs. Carlos
Jimenez) jumps with a quick take-off
and reflexes and opens well in the
haunches. The ISF cup was won by
Zinnia (Consul, owner/breeder Katie
Moriarty), with a score of 72 points.
Elmira-IS; photo by Bill Wertman
The second day the keuring started
with a big class of foals, the top foals
are also ranked in the Top Fives.
Champion dressage foal was the elegant and long-legged Jazz colt Encore
(owner/breeder Lisa Dickman of Pocahontas Stables). Encore showed a
very supple and uphill trot with good
flexion in the joints. Second was the
Sir Sinclair filly Eden-ISF, bred and
owned by ISF. Eden-ISF showed good
reach in movement and has a wellmuscled body. Third place went to the
well-developed Elmira-ISF. The Riverman filly is out of the beautiful mare

Rabiola and shows a good top line and
has a well-balanced canter.
Eclipse SCF, another youngster by
Balou du Rouet (owner/breeder Dr.
and Mrs. Carlos Jimenez) was the best
jumper foal. Eclipse is well developed
and has well-developed withers and
shoulders. Especially the supple canter
had good length of stride and good balance. The Riverman colt Energee
HWF, owner/breeder Julia Snyder/
Hickory Wood Farm, also showed a
good canter and placed second.
Claybrook Farms
September 18 brought us to the
hospitable Claybrook Farms where we
started with a seminar about the
KWPN, its history, veterinary requirements and linear scoring in theory and
practice. The interested and studious
attendees made it easier for the judges
to explain the decisions made at the
keuring the next day.
Nice foal classes were presented at
Claybrook Farms, which is also the
owner and breeder of the lovely
jumper foal Encore CBF. Encore CBF
has explicit jumper conformation and
is ranked first in North America. This
young colt (Indoctro out of Pikina
Field keur by Corland) is well developed, with a nice, long, well-muscled
neck, good withers and back, and legs
that are very lean and correct. In the
supple trot Encore CBF shows good
technique and the canter is well balanced and supple. Second place went
to Eastwood SPF (Cathalido, owner/
breeder Tracy Geller of Six Pound
Farm), who showed a good, well-balanced canter. Elite Field CBF (Silverstone) was also a first premium.
The supple trotter Eragon (Wamberto) ranked first in the class for dressage
by Bart Henstra
The 8-year-old Goodtimes mare
Ulottie did not free jump but will be
able to earn her ster predicate when
she passes the jumping IBOP. The 4year-old dressage mare Zomica
(Ferro) passed her IBOP and received
the keur predicate. Akina Field CBF
(Goodtimes) passed her IBOP with
her well-balanced canter and her
quick take-off and became keur.

foals. Eragon (owner/breeder Ada v.d.
Kolk) is well developed and has a nice
top line, with a well-placed, vertical
neck. First premiums also went to the
supple mover Emmett P (Rousseau,
owner/breeder Klaas and Mares v.d.
Ploeg) and the elegant Encore (Bugatti
Hilltop, owner/breeder Michael and
Evelyn Hobbs of Carousel Farm).
The September 20th keuring was
held at Apple Lane Farm, where a large
group of students visited the keuring.
Good foals defined this keuring, with
six first premiums in the class for dressage foals.
Farms) is well developed, refined and
light-footed in her movement. Her canter is well balanced and earned her a
place in the Top Fives. There were also
first premiums for Evitta MG
(Navarone) and Ensign On Deck (Wittinger).
The 3-year-old Johnson daughter
Bunny SSF (owner/breeder Shooting
Star Farm) received her ster predicate
with her supple movement and good
use of the hindleg. The gelding Ampersand (Donatelli) received the ster predicate. The mare Ade Lente (Freestyle)
passed her IBOP with 75.5 points,
showing good rideability. Ade Lente
also earned the highest score in the DG
Bar Cup that day.
Gingerwood Stables
Best dressage horse was the welldeveloped and-uphill built Armani
(Special D x Olivia elite by Idocus).
Owner/breeder Lana Sneddon rode
Armani in the DG Bar Cup where he
received 77.5 points, the highest score
of the day. Armani showed an active
trot and a powerful canter both in free
movement and under saddle. Basho
SCF also received the ster predicate.
The 3-year-old Jazz mare (owned by
Anne Schmidt of Tam Farm) is refined,
has lean legs and shows good technique in her supple movement. Joe and
Lisa Sanfelippo wanted their powerful
mare Belsjarona to be shown as a
Gelders horse. This Harmonie daughter showed a happy performance and
received her ster predicate.*
Although the judges had a six hour
delay getting there, the Gingerwood
Stables was a very pleasant treat. Due
to the delay we had to start immediately with the IBOP jumpers. The studbook mare Zenda NSN (Ferro x the
keur pref dam Never Say Never by
Wanroij, owner/breeder Martha Haley)

a little bit in the use of her front leg,

petitors with her uphill conformation, of 76.5 points Zenda NSN received her
nicely shaped neck and her supple ster predicate. Her score of 76.5 in the
movement. The well-developed Eros ISF-Cup was the highest of the day.
SSF (UB-40, owner/breeder Scot and
Carol Tolman of Shooting Star Farm)
showed good reach in the front leg
and placed second. Other first premiums were the long lined Emora MG
(Farrington), the elegant Eloma MG
(Schroeder), Everest (UB-40) and
Evander (Rampal).
* Because she does not meet the requirements for the Gelders type, Belsjarona
cannot change breeding directions. As a
rule horses cannot be looked at in a breeding direction they do not qualify for.

2009 KEURING REPORTS
Prima Equestrian
At Prima Equestrian we again
opened with a seminar. Prima Equestrian took good care of the attendees;
it was a very informative and clarifying day. The keuring at Prima featured
good classes, especially the jumpers.
On the 23rd we started with the IBOP
jumping. Two 3-year-olds passed the
IBOP jumping; both riders did a good
job presenting these them under sadBolero NSN; photo by Jerrica Coady-Farrell dle. Beyond P (Ahorn x Rumpole

Equestrian) scored 78 points and in one
keuring with her horses; her 3-year-old
day moved from the foalbook to keur.
gelding Bolero NSN (Sir Donnerhall)
received the high scores with his nice
neck, and a trot with very good use of
the body, uphill and with reach in the
front leg. Martha’s mare Bosanova
NSN, a full sister of Zenda NSN, also
received her star and was keur eligible
with her powerful trot. In movement
Bosanova becomes bigger and uses
her neck properly.
Bagatelle NPF (Donatelli, owner/
breeder New Perth Farms) should
show more power in her movement
and can receive her ster predicate after
she passes the IBOP.
New Perth Farms showed good
dressage foals, especially the longlegged Sir Oldenburg foal Esprentina
NPF who showed good technique in
her supple movement and good posture. There was also a first premium for
Enkeur NPF (Lord Sinclair).
In movement the long-lined yearling Demarko NPF (Johnson, owner/
breeder New Perth Farms) showed
good length of stride and reach in the
front leg and received a first premium.
The jumper foal Euro’s Praxi (Lupicor,
owner/breeder Euro Equestrian Sale)
received a first premium because of his
active movement.
Beyond P; photo by Ben Radvanyi
Beyond P has a very well-developed
wither and shoulder. In jumping she
shows good technique and quick
reflexes. Beam P (Indoctro, owned by
Maureen Smith and Susan Parker) also
passed the IBOP. This 3-year-old gelding is careful, easy to ride and
adjustable to the fences. Beam P also
received the ster predicate.
The best jumper was the beautiful
3-year-old Bieni (Cardento x Tieni
keur by Lux, by Rivercross Farm),
has distinct jumper conformation,
with nice proportions and strong connections in the top line. In jumping
she is very quick and upward in her
take-off, with very good use of her
front leg, and good use of her back
and haunches.
Page 8 • Newsletter of the KWPN-NA
The scopey Bambino Chin (v. Chin
Chin) also received the ster predicate.
The Gelders mare Adessa (Koss)
impressed the judges last year at the
keuring, and this day scored 76 in her
IBOP, receiving the keur predicate.
The dressage mare Amelia (Jacardo)
passed the IBOP with 78 points, especially her canter was well-balanced and
powerful, scoring 8.5 points. Due to
her weak loins Amelia did not become
keur eligible.
The jumper foal class impressed the
judges with their conformation, canter
and pedigrees. All foals received a first
premium and two ranked in the Top
Fives in North America. The canter of
the handsome Estrada LWS (Numero
Uno x Majesteit keur by Nimmerdor,
owner/breeder Don and Tracy Holmgren of Longwood Stables) put him in
first place. His good body and nice
long neck also contributed to that
placement. Second place went to the
well-developed Clinton son, Epsom
Bloom (owner/breeder Bloomington
Farm), who showed a good top line
and a good, supple canter. Elle Chin P
(Chin Chin), Elektra LWS (Ustinov)
and Empress Chin P (Chin Chin) followed.
First premiums also went to the
dressage foal Elcho and the hunter foal
Exodus Bloom.

QUALITY HARNESS HORSES IN OHIO
The combined KWPN-NA and
ADHHA keuring was held on
September 11 in Sullivan, Ohio.
by René van der Kuil
This was the fourth time that the
KWPN-NA harness horse keuring
was organized by the American Dutch
Harness Horse Association. The
ADHHA is the registry that is used
mainly by Amish breeders to register
their (cross bred) harness horses. The
jury, consisting of René van der Kuil
and Lana Sneddon, saw a variety of
high-quality harness horses.
The best filly at the keuring was
Elixerian (Whiskei x Bellerina by
Unbelievable by Manno) owned and
bred by Ron and Debbie Egan. The
Egans are also the breeders of the
Hackney stallion Makari Jetsetter and
the trainers at Windy Knoll Farm, the
very beautiful keuring location. Elixeria is long lined with a very good harness type. She trots with a good front
and very good leg use. She comes
from the Dini Markhorst mare line.
The best colt was also a descendant of
Whiskei, from the Jonker-Anjolina
daughter, breeder/owner Marlin Ray
Miller. Whiskei is a son of Patijn out
Egan’s Eureka
of the Sjoerd Cazemier bred star mare
Sabrina by.Manno, that was licensed
for North American breeding two
years ago. With seven foals he was the
leading sire of the keuring. Of the ten
foals present, seven received a first
premium. Elixeria was the foal champion and would not have been out of
place at national levels in Holland.
Windfall
The only yearling at the keuring
received a first premium. Double the
Money (Money Maker x the keur preferent prestatie mare Etinkie by Natuur,
owner Rosewood Farm). This colt has
a beautiful front but the foreleg lacks
some length. Self-carriage is good at
the trot, but the bay could be more
convincing. Etinkie is great-grandmother to the new breeding stallion
champion Waldemar.
Four mature mares came for studbook inspection. All were entered
into the studbook and three earned
the ster predicate. All these mares
were bred by Dean Wikel of Pegasus
Arabians. A few years ago Dean
Wikel was one of the major investors
in harness horses. Among others, he
purchased the approved stallion
Jonker and top mares Erina (Waterman), Paulette B (Fabricius) and
photos Ron and Debbie Egan
Rommy (Milano) to use in his halfArab breeding program. He has since
sold most of his harness horses. Jonker
was presented in Sullivan by his new
owner Rose Wood Farms.
Leading the mare class was the sixyear-old Waterford (Patijn x Sendrini
ster by Majesteit, owned by Chris
Schmucker). She is a long-lined black
mare with a lot of refinement that
moves with power and action. This
mare goes back to the mare line of the
Poppen family. Second was the sixyear old Wrapped in Roses (Waterman x Roligemma H by Kolonel,
owned by Alan Graber). This bay
mare has a classic imprint but moves
strongly. She is from the mare line that
produced the approved stallion Wilhelmus. Also ster was three-year-old
Barbie (Jonker x Orina ster by
Jochem, owner Twilight Valley Farm.
Waterford and Barbie also performed the IBOP. Waterford earned 75
points and was therefore promoted
from foalbook to keur mare in one
day! Barbie had to make do with 72.5
points. The three-year-old seems to
have enough talent, but did not show
it that day.

JUDGEMENT-ISF RETIRES FROM SPORT
2009 marks the end of an era the retirement of the great
jumper Judgement ISF.
foreword by Christine DeHerera
Few horses in the history of the
sport of show jumping have the fan
following, peer respect and competitive results as this magnificent black
stallion, who has wowed fans since his
competitive debut in the 1995 International Jumper Futurity.
Now, at 18 years of age, it is time
for his legions of fans to say goodbye
and wish him a happy retirement.
Judgement ISF has won more than
$1,500,000 in his career and has a performance record that is nearly
unmatched. Among his accomplishments: victory in the $1,000,000 CN
International at Spruce Meadows – the
first for a North-American-bred horse.
His numerous Grand Prix victories are
coupled with his representation of the
United States in 10 Nations Cup classes. He also represented his country in
the 2002 World Equestrian Games in
Jerez, Spain.
Although he has been bred lightly,
his offspring have inherited his talent
and good temperament. They are winning both over fences and in sporthorse breeding competitions and are
always highly ranked by the KWPN.
by Meghan DeGaray, Megan Maloney & Mary Jo Sloan
Some people say I’m Judgement’s
biggest fan. Maybe it’s the Facebook
fan page I started for him, or the hundreds of pictures of him that I own, or
maybe it’s the fact that I could barely
watch when he competed because I
would get so nervous and excited. But
how could anyone not be enamored of
this charming and athletic 17-hand
dark bay stallion? I’ve known Judgement from the very beginning. His official retirement ceremony here at Syracuse seems like the perfect occasion to
reflect on his remarkable career. I hope
my fellow Judgement fans enjoy this
reminiscence, and for those of you who
haven’t had the pleasure of knowing
“Judgey” yet, perhaps you’ll see why
he has so many fond followers around
the world.
I am the breeding manager at Iron
Spring Farm, where Judgement was literally born and bred. He grew up on
the farm’s spacious pastures and
rolling hills in Coatesville, Pennsylvania. Iron Spring is a special place that
has realized the ambitious vision of
owner Mary Alice Malone – to breed
top-quality equine athletes so that people can buy European-quality horses

right here in the United States. Horses
are carefully selected; stallions
matched with mares that complement
each other, all with the goal of each
generation of foals exceeding their parents. It is Mary Alice’s vision and commitment to excellence and detail that
was Judgement’s beginning, and many
others have helped him along the way.
When Judgement ISF was born in
June of 1991 it was clear he would do
his sire, Consul, justice, but at that
young age, no one could imagine what
he would accomplish over his career.
The first hint of Judgement’s natural
talent came when he was sent through
the jumping chute as a three year old –
he literally made jaws drop. That undeniable natural talent was combined
with his stellar performance would
make Judgement the first American
stallion approved by the KWPN.
Judge found great partners over the
years, no doubt a factor in his impressive success. After being started by
Melvin Dutton, Judgement ISF found
himself under the tutelage of none
other than show-jumping legend
Michael Matz. The first day Michael
came to see Judgement, he was a three-
In July of 2000Judge moved to
John Madden Sales. Beezie thought a
stallion of Judgement’s size might be a
lot to handle, but she soon found that
“he’s a light horse to ride and he wants
to work with you.” Their partnership
would grow to be a memorable one
both for show jumping fans and for
Beezie herself. At nine years of age, he
had shown predominately in the U.S.,
with the exception of a trip to Belgium
in 1997 for the World Breeding Championships for Young Jumpers with
Michael.
year-old and Melvin Dutton was riding
him. Michael says Melvin had set up a
huge wall and Judge jumped so big and
powerfully that they just about landed
in the garden outside the ring. Michael
was so impressed that he knew right
away this horse would be something
special.
Michael’s experience told him that
taking it slow would be the best route
with this stallion. He says of Judgement, “As far as raw ability, he has the
most ability of all the horses I have ridden. As much talent as any horse I’ve
ridden. Athletically Jet Run was better
and Heisman was very good and Rhum
more careful, but as far as raw natural
ability, Judgement had the most.”
When Michael made the decision
to leave the show-jumping world to
train race horses (most notably Barbaro), he was left with the hard decision of who would take over the reins
on the big black stallion. Michael suggested Beezie Madden might be the
right fit. John Madden, Beezie’s husband and collaborator in training
duties, would later say that Michael’s
entrusting Judgement to Beezie and
him is one of the proudest moments of
his life.
While Judgement came with a solid
foundation and tremendous talent, he
also had a debilitating fear of water
jumps, which could have destroyed his
chances for success in the Grand Prix
ring if not overcome. All of the best
Grands Prix in the U.S. and around the
world include some type of water
obstacle, whether it be a large water
jump or small liverpools at the base of
fences. Unless the big stallion could
learn to not fear water, his chances for
becoming a top show jumper were
severely limited. Michael and Iron
Spring put their trust in John and
Beezie to do their best to bring Judgement along. Like Michael, John and
Beezie took their time and eventually
found an effective, though highly
unusual, training method: “On Target”
clicker training, a positive reinforcement approach to animal training best
known for its use with marine mammals. Combining that tool and their
own methodology, they were able to
give Judgement the confidence to overcome his fear of the water. It took years
of patience, but the end result was phenomenal.

JUDGEMENT RETIRES FROM SPORT
“Most horses never get past a fear
of water if they have it,” John
explained. “Judgement coped well with
it though. At the end of his career, it
was no longer even a factor. He is a
great stallion, not just because of his
ability, but because of his character,
how hard he tries.”
That September, two months after
he arrived at John Madden Sales,
Beezie and Judgement took on their
first big Grand Prix, the American Gold
Cup in Devon, PA. Already forming a
good partnership, the pair placed seventh. In October, they flew to Europe
to get some international experience.
Judge had never before competed
indoors, a real test for an inexperienced
horse. This tour of Europe with Beezie
would be his first serious experience
with the international scene and its
indoor venues with big crowds and
many of the top horses and riders in the
world. Indoor Friesland Leeuwarden
was the first stop, then Maastricht and
the finale in Amsterdam. They had
good ribbons in all their classes and it
was quite a good start for Beezie and
the rather young Grand Prix horse, still
only nine years old.
In 2001, they began in Florida.

get go as they had ribbons in nearly
every class including the Spruce Meadows National $73,403 Canadian Pacific World Cup and the $133,460 ATCO
Power Queen Elizabeth II Cup, finishing second in both.
After a trip to California, they jetted
to the Netherlands for more international experience and then back to
Spruce Meadows for the Masters.
Judgement and Beezie then represented the USA in the Nations Cup for the
first time. They did the Team proud and
were double clear – playing a crucial
role in securing the Silver Medal for
Team USA. The next day Beezie rode
Judge in the Nortel Networks Grand
Prix where they placed fourth.
They finished out the year tackling
the North American indoor circuit consisting of Washington, Harrisburg and
Toronto. In D.C. they were members of
the Nations Cup Team and helped
secure another second for the Team.
At this point it was becoming clear
to Judgement’s team that this uniquely
talented stallion and that he had some
definite likes and dislikes. At some
venues he seemed to thrive, where at
others he would do well, but be
markedly less enthusiastic. Washington
was not his favorite venue, but he liked
Harrisburg. As much he loved the big,
free-ranging outdoor jumping fields of
Calgary, he seemed to dislike competing at Toronto’s Royal Winter Fair in
the heart of the city. Syracuse, on the
other hand, came to be a favorite. Perhaps he thrived on the loud enthusiasm
of the Syracuse fans, or maybe it was
because he knew he’d get a chance to
jump some of the highest jumps of the
year in the 4-bar phase of the Animal
Planet Sporthorse Cup.
While Judgement never went to the
Olympics, he was never considered
second fiddle to his barnmate Authentic. In 2002, Judgement won over
$140,000 and competed to top placings
in the U.S., Canada and Europe. Over

dous power and unique tail flip, would
garner him many more wins around the
world. In 2008, John and Beezie wondered if it was time to retire the big stallion whose career had now spanned 14
years with over $1.5 million in winnings. He had won his third straight
Derby at Spruce Meadows, by being
the only horse to go clear in the pouring rain, and then finished out the year
with a second win in the Animal Planet Sporthorse Cup.
Given that he was still jumping so
well Mary Alice, John and Beezie
decided to give him one more year at
Spruce Meadows, his favorite place to
compete, where he had won so often
over the years and gained the affection
of so many fans. As an 18-year-old
Judgement went back to his beloved
Spruce Meadows in 2009, and earned
nearly $50,000 by winning the $65,000
ESSO Cup and placing in the top seven
in every other class he entered. The
folks at Spruce Meadows, knowing it
would be his last competition there,
gave him a fantastic send-off. I don’t
think I was the only one with tears in
my eyes.
John says that he is most happy that
Judgement is finishing out his storied
career healthy and in good form and
that Beezie feels the same way. I could
not agree more. With nothing left to
prove in the ring, Judgement will return
to Iron Spring Farm in 2010 where he
will stand at stud. He has already sired
impressive offspring in the past years,
and I know he will leave a legacy of
wonderful horses. While I’m delighted
that I’ll get to see him everyday (since
his stall will be just steps from my
office) his return to Iron Spring is bittersweet for me – I can’t help but wonder if he will miss the roar of the
crowds.
What was Judgement ISF like as a young horse?
He showed me he was a super jumper very early. He was a big, good-looking colt and
he jumped the moon.
When did you realize that he was special?
When I saw him jumping in preparation for a keuring I knew he had more talent than
any horse I had ever seen.
What made you decide to send him to Michael Matz for training as a jumper?
I liked Michael very much as a person and knew he’d be fair to the horse. I knew he
would take his time and let Judgement develop at his own speed. When Michael retired,
I was fortunate that Beezie and John Madden could continue Judgement’s career.
What was it like when he won the CN $1,000,000 class at Spruce Meadows?
It was a once in a lifetime moment-the icing on the cake. All of his wins have been totally amazing. I’m very lucky to have had him with Michael Matz early in his career, and
Beezie and John Madden for the majority of his international victories. This magical
connection between Judgement and Beezie made the entire experience special for me.
What is your favorite memory of Judgement?
When he was a young horse I had someone helping us work with him. He jumped the
little jumps and jumped out of the ring and kept right on going! What has been really
special are the relationships I have had with the people who have trained Judgement.
Not only are they talented, but they truly took care of him as a special horse. This has
been a really cool thing.
What does Judgement’s success mean for North American breeders?
It has taken a long time for people to realize that not only do we have talented horses
in this country, but we also have the riders and trainers to bring that talent along.
What will Judgement do after his retirement?
He’s going to enjoy a well-deserved retirement and stand at stud.
Any other thoughts?
I’m incredibly lucky to have such a wonderful horse. It’s the combination of having the
right horse, recognizing the talent and putting him with people that nurtured that talent.

IN MEMORIAM
KEVEKKO
1992-2009
I think many of us have had special
bonds with our equine partners. It’s
what keeps us going, and keeps us
dedicated to an otherwise difficult and
sometimes punishing sport. I have had
the privilege of riding many special
horses in my life and learning from
each one, but I don’t think any of them
will ever touch the bond I had with my
partner of 10 years, my stallion
Kevekko.
He was extraordinary in so many
ways. As a sporthorse he excelled in
both dressage and jumping, showing
remarkable talent for both disciplines:
although he competed successfully
through Grand Prix dressage, he was
the only stallion at his 100-Day Stallion test to earn a 10 for jumping under
saddle. As a breeding stallion, he was
as dependable as he was in the show
ring, and sired foals that were lovely
movers with even lovelier temperaments. As a competitor, he was steadfast and reliable, as well as spectacular. But to me, this was all on paper. To
me, it was Kevekko’s heart that made
him so special, and what separated
him from all others.
My parents imported Kevekko
from the Netherlands as a gangly,

plain brown weanling. My mother,
Carolyn Hoekstra, has always had a
particular talent for picking out exceptional youngsters, even at their most
awkward. But I truly believe that in
Kevekko’s case, her choosing him was
more than a sum of his physical parts.
He was kind, generous, intelligent and
mentally tough, but with a sparkle in
his eye that told you there was much
more going on.
That sparkle translated in the show
ring, and in life. He had a quiet way
about him (when he wasn’t calling for
the ladies!) and always tried his hardest, no matter what. He was a horse
that never said “no”, especially not to
me. For instance, when he did his 100Day Test, the head trainer pulled my
mother aside to explain that in the first
week or so, the stallions were pushed
until they drew a line in the sand, saying “I can’t give any more” so the
trainers would know their thresholds.
The reason he pulled her aside, however, was that Kevekko was the only
stallion he had ever encountered that
never drew a line. He just kept trying,
because that was his job.
Over the years there were many
demonstrations of his steadiness and
generosity. One I remember in particular was when he was about six and
we were warming up for the Bloomfield show. In typical Michigan-weather fashion, it was cold, blustery and
raining. One of the vendor tents came
unanchored and blew across the ring
banging smack into us. As the other
horses tried to save themselves by
abandoning ship, Kevekko just trotted
on as if nothing had happened, steady
and calm, ready for the next request…
because he knew it was his job.
His determination never seemed to
waiver. One year at the Regional
Page 14 • Newsletter of the KWPN-NA
Championships we were competing in
the Prix St. Georges. One corner of the
ring had been overwatered and
Kevekko slipped near the beginning of
the test. I could tell something was not
quite right afterwards, but he seemed
ok, so we carried on. He performed
beautifully, as always, and then something happened I will never forget: we
came down that last centerline and halted, having completed a mistake-free
test. Then, he walked out of the halt on
three legs. It turned out he had pulled a
suspensory, but he refused to give up
during the test... because it was his job.
Another time, I decided to do some
cross-country jumping with him. I
thought it was a waste to not take
advantage of all that jumping talent.
Under instruction we did a few practice jumps and then attempted a very
small bank. Kevekko was having a
blast and jumped a little bigger than I
expected. I flew off to the side and was
bracing for impact. I shut my eyes and
waited. But, to my ultimate surprise,
Kevekko to the rescue! He scooted
sideways and then stopped, catching
me and popping me back into the saddle. I knew I would always be safe
with him. He was protecting me,
because he knew it was his job.
I have thousands of stories about
him and our time together, some
funny, some harrowing, and some profound. Stories like sitting on him under
the pavilion at Waterloo, waiting for a
thunderstorm to ease up so we could
do our freestyle. He was relaxed as
could be and spent the time entertaining the spectators with his cool
demeanor as we waited. Or, how he
always used to try to nip my hand during the FEI jogs because he knew I
by Colleen Knox
wasn’t allowed to carry a whip. Or,
how excited he used to get at the swell
of the music and the applause of the
audience when doing freestyles. Or,
when he gave up his male dignity for
a brief moment to let me put streamers
in his tail and glitter on his hooves to
do a patriotic freestyle dedicated to my
brother, a naval officer. But mostly I
remember that when I was riding him
it felt like we were one. We moved
together, thought together, shared joy
and disappointment together.
He saw me through my turbulent
teenage years – we started competing
at Training Level when I was seventeen and he was five. He held me
steady to my course as I pushed
through personal conflict, worked
through college, transitioned from
child to adult, and somehow together
we made our way to the top. That hot
summer day at Lamplight when we
rode our first Grand Prix, I came out
of the ring in tears. I was so touched
by his effort, by how much we had
accomplished together, and I knew he
understood. He had given all he had,
because he knew it was his job.
I don’t think I have ever learned
more from anyone in my life.
Kevekko taught me to be patient, no
matter how frustrated I was. To be still,

even when I wanted to run. To never
say “no” to opportunities, and to never
take no for an answer. To fight for
what I thought was fair, and that hard
work does get rewarded in the end. To
believe in myself when no one else
would. But most of all, he taught me
to trust without fear, and to love without condition.
Now, I am lucky enough to have
his daughter and granddaughter with
me here in England. I see him in them
every day, and I feel him with me
every time I ride. I take all those lessons with me everywhere I go, to
every horse I train and everyone I
teach, and even to those I love. It is a
way of keeping his memory alive and
of carrying his legacy forward.
Because I know that is my job.

We purchased Kevekko in the
summer of 2006 for Dr. Lora
Stephens. We had had our eye on him
for a long time, but never had the
opportunity to buy him. Then Colleen
called me to say she was getting married, moving to England and needed to
sell Kevekko. I immediately started
thinking “How can I get this wonderful horse into our barn?”
Sometime later, Lora and I drove to
see Kevekko. I rode him, Lora rode
him and then my mom Carole rode
him. Carole loved him. He was beautiful, and looked the part to really up the
quality level in our barn.
After getting Kevekko home and
working with him we started thinking
we could make a run at Grand Prix. His
age was a concern, but we wanted to
try. Dr. Stephens was kind enough to
loan Kevekko to me for up to three
years with the goal of possibly doing
the 2010 World Championship Trials.
In 2008 Kevekko and I won USEF
Silver Stirrup Champion in Int. II and
Reserve Champion in Grand Prix. We
also won Int. II Champion 2008 for the
Midwest Dressage Association and
Reserve Champion for Grand Prix. We
qualified for the North American
Regional Championships in both I-II
and Grand Prix, but he was sidelined
with an injury so were not able to go.
In 2009, we headed to Wellington,
Florida, and competed against many of
our best horses and riders, placing in
almost every class and winning the
Grand Prix at the Winter Equestrian
Festival Classic. On the last Saturday
of March, I began warming up
Kevekko for my Intermediaire class;
which I used as a warm-up for the
Grand Prix. He began the warm-up

really well. As I began my trot half pass
work I came around a right turn
through the corner of the ring and felt
Kevekko take a bad step on his right
front. He took a few more bad steps
and then as Carole coached me to put
him more through, he stoically became
sound again.
Although he had taken a few bad
steps he was performing well and did
not seem to be in any distress. Kevekko
was wonderful in the ring and I could
not have felt more prepared for the
Grand Prix that was to be the following day. However, after Kevekko was
cooled down and had his bath I had his
caretaker and our assistant Jamie
Kruithoff take him out of the stall and
jog him. I hoped he would be all right,
but I knew right away he was seriously injured. We had an ultrasound
machine on him within an hour and
began what was to be a one month
struggle to diagnose why he was so
lame in the right front.
One month later, on April 27th,
Kevekko and I hit the road for Kentucky. I drove him to Hagyard Davis
for an MRI. On the 28th, I awaited the
results of the MRI. I was not sure how
I felt. I had many feelings: numb, tired
and appreciative for all the experiences
he had given me.
It takes a team to put a horse and
rider into the ring at the Grand Prix
level. I feel so grateful to have been at
that level with such a majestic horse. I
feel grateful to my mom Carole for all
her hours of hard work with Kevekko
and me. I feel so appreciative of Lora
for saying “yes” the day I asked her to
loan Kevekko to me and to give up her
own personal time on his back. Lora
truly has given to the sport of dressage
in so many ways; through her breeding
program as well as by supporting her
breeding stallion Kevekko at Grand
Prix level. He had the strength and talent for the sport at the highest level. He
was also a super jumper which truly
made him an ideal breeding stallion.
When you compete a horse a bond
forms. It is a bond unlike any other.
Entering the arena and being judged is
such a wonderful thing because for
those few minutes it’s truly just you
and the horse. There is no re-take, no
trainer who can say how to do it. The
horse and you are alone in the arena
performing under stress and pressure
and getting through it together. It is
because of this “moment of truth” that
a special bond forms. I could have sent
Kevekko with someone else for the
MRI, It would have been easier. But
after all he has done for me, I had to be
there to pat him on the neck and say
“good boy”.
Kevekko’s MRI showed that the
pastern joint no longer had any cartilage. It showed bone on bone, which is
very painful, and some bone degeneration. This had not previously shown up
on x-rays. The surgeon said this level
of arthritis starts from some sort of
injury. In other words, he wasn’t born
with it, but developed the problem.
During the month of May, Dr. Gomez,
a top surgeon from Hagyard Davis,
tried to treat the joint but there was no
improvement. His joint continued to
deteriorate and there was nothing more
medically we could do.
On June 1st of 2009, Kevekko
returned home. His prognosis was that
even with stall confinement the bones
would continue to deteriorate. The official diagnosis was progressive degenerative joint disease in RF pastern joint.
There was no good outcome.
Page 16 • Newsletter of the KWPN-NA
The decision was made between
Dr. Braeutigam, Dr. Gomez, myself
and Lora Stephens to humanely put
Kevekko to sleep. This was the hardest
decision I’ve ever had to make.
I’ve learned more from Kevekko
than any other horse in my career –
both in show jumping and dressage. He
taught me a much deeper respect for
horses. Kevekko was ridden and
trained most of his life by Colleen
Hoekstra-Knox. Colleen and Kevekko
had a bond which was very special. I
knew when we bought him at age 15 it
would be hard to replace Colleen and I
knew it would take time for Kevekko
to get to know me. I had no idea he
would make me work so hard to earn
his respect. For the first year Kevekko
played with me and tested every skill I
had, humbling me on a daily basis. I
was determined to become a team with
him, although every day I felt more and
more like I could never replace the
bond he had with Colleen. I can honestly say that in Florida 2009, we
became a team. He finally said yes, I
will be your partner. I had earned that
right.
He had his own opinions. When I
was wrong he shouted it to me loud
and clear, but when I was right he gave
me his best and made my seat, timing,
and knowledge grow every day that I
rode him. It was a privilege to know
him and ride him. I learned a respect
for horses I never had before and I’m a
better rider and horsewoman today
because Kevekko was in my life.
I thank his owner, Dr. Lora
Stephens, from the bottom of my heart
for her unending support. Lora always
had Kevekko’s best interest at heart.
I also am so thankful to my mother
Carole Grant for her support and hard
work with Kevekko. She taught him
and me so much about passage and
piaffe – the one movement from the
Grand Prix we struggled with. In the
end Kevekko had a correct, fluid passage and piaffe and was able to transition between the two with so much
rideability. I learned a whole new level
of throughness and straightness from
our struggles. I also learned how much
strength it takes for a horse to do this
movement and felt myself how important it is for horses to begin passage
and piaffe at a very early age in order
to build the muscles over many years.

I am so eager to train Kevekko’s

now from some very good mares.

Canada National Youth Championships provides a terrific platform for
Canada’s emerging talent. The headto-head format proves to be an exciting competition as riders sharpen their
skills over the competition season, collecting valuable qualifying scores in
order to represent their region.
Rider/horse combinations must
achieve a minimum qualifying score
of 60% in the Team, Individual and

FOUR-IN-HAND DRIVING CHAMPIONSHIP
Chester Weber wins recordsetting seventh title at United
States National Four-In-Hand
Driving Championship.
courtesy Team Weber
Chester Weber captured his seventh
straight USEF National Four-In-Hand
Driving Championship at the Kentucky
Cup and Lexington Driving Classic.
Weber’s win bodes well for the 2010
Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games,
as this event served as the test event for
next year’s WEG, also to be held at the
Kentucky Horse Park. For the first time
ever, all six USEF National Driving
Championships were running concurrently.
“When you set goals and make
them clear to everyone around you it
does add more pressure,” Weber said.
“However, you also make the goal very
clear to yourself and your team and
there is no question what you are trying to achieve.”
Weber won the record-setting title
by 10 points, beating out fellow American Tucker Johnson, who was also
going for the lucky seventh win.
Throughout the three phases of the
competition, Weber and his team won
the dressage and cones phase and came
in second to Australian driver Boyd
Exell in the marathon.
Weber said his biggest challenge
during the competition was to drive
clear on Sunday. “I knew that I could
have three balls down in the cones and
still win the competition, however I
wanted to win convincingly,” he said.
“In order to prepare myself for next
season I forced myself to not become
lax but to concentrate more.”
Celebrating seventh win at the Four-In-Hand Driving Championship;
Weber’s concentration paid off, but
was challenged a bit by his well-known
horse Jamaica (Cambridge Cole x
Welkom by Noran, bred by A.J. Kwast),
the 2008 Farnam/ USEF Horse of the
Year. Instead of using Jamaica in the
marathon and cones, Weber saved the
18-year-old superstar for cones only in
hopes of keeping the horse fresh.
Jamaica was at the left wheel and
turned out to be too fresh and a bit of a
handful, giving Weber the added pressure of an excited horse.
Besides changing his wheelers
around, Weber also used a mixture of
experience and youth to lead his dressage team. Rolex (Larix x Dorena by
Wilhelmus, Breeder: M. de Boer) is
undefeated at dressage in the lead position, so he paired him with five-yearold Reno to show him the ropes. Weber
said his proudest moments throughout
the competition came from five-yearold Reno W (Torino x Kroonvorstin
by Renovo, Breeder: HBC Stal BV)
who competed all three days in the
lead.
Weber, spent the past months training with difficult cones courses to prepare for the National Championships.
Germany’s Michael Freund came to his
Page 24 • Newsletter of the KWPN-NA
farm in August and September to help
him prepare for these championships as
well as the World Equestrian Games in
2010.
“Michael wanted me to train on
some very difficult courses as he
knows that next year at WEG that is
what it will come down to,” Weber
said. “We used training elements from
difficult courses at the big CAIs in
Europe this past summer. By the end I
was training on courses made up of
only those difficult elements. It was
nuts and there was little to no flow, but
I figured what doesn’t kill me makes
me stronger.”
A record number of four-in-hand
teams turned out for the event, 16 total,
11 of which were American. This is a
huge accomplishment for the U.S. driving program. Australia and Canada
were also represented, with Australia’s
Boyd Exell lying in third overnight.
The Pair Horse Championship drew
a small field but excellent marks from
the ground jury. The Singles Horse
National Championship kicked off the
morning and Fritz Grupe jumped out to
a commanding lead, driving the eightyear-old KWPNer Umnico.

the above outstanding achievement,
KWPN dressage horses climbed to the
number one position for the first time
in over a decade. For many years, the
Hanoverian studbook held the leading
dressage position, but this year the
KWPN took the lead in the ranking by
more than 500 points. Equally impressive is that KWPN horses lead the
individual rankings as well. Olympic
champion Hickstead is still the best
jumper, and the European Champion
Parzival is the new top dressage horse.
Hickstead: First in Jumping
KWPN Erkend stallion Hickstead
(Hamlet x Jomara ster pref by Ekstein,
Breeder: B. van Schijndel) took the
top spot on the jumper rankings for the
second year in a row. The super-keen
bay stallion and his equally keen rider
Eric Lamaze always give 110% and
win competitions time after time. Second on the list is another KWPN
horse: Robin Hood W (Animo x
Melisimo sport (jump) by Libero H,
Breeder: B. of Ijsselmuiden). Earlier
this year, in an unusual coincidence,
both Robin Hood W and his dam
Melisimo, ridden by Michelle
Spadone, competed in the Las Vegas
World Cup Final. Robin Hood W’s
rider Ben Maher has enjoyed a string
of successes with this equine athlete.
Other outstanding world-class
jumpers on the list include the KWPN
stallion O’Brien (19th) and the Libero
H son No Mercy (29th) (out of Jeantal
by Dillenburg, Breeder: J.W. Haikens).
Parzival: First in Dressage
Among the dressage horses, Parzival (Jazz x Fidora ster prest by Ulft,
Breeder: J.M. Beijer-de Kleijn of Puiflijk) ranks number one thanks to his
excellent international show results.
Adelinde Cornelissen and the impressive chestnut gelding are going better
than ever together. Also noteworthy is
the rise of the KWPN Erkend stallion
Totilas, who traded his 91st place
ranking from last year for his current
number three position. These outstanding achievements, along with
those by Ravel (Contango x Hautain
pref prest by Democraat, Breeder: H.
de Man) with Steffen Peters, KWPNapproved stallion Painted Black with
Anky van Grunsven, the elite mare
Nadine (TCN Partout x Charites ster
pref prest by Roemer, Breeder: G.C.
Vervoorn) with Hans-Peter Minderhoud, and Pop Art (Amsterdam x
Jodyprinses keur by Cabochon, Breeder: E. Korenberg) with Ashley Holzer
– respectively ranked fifth, eighth,
tenth, and sixteenth – have clearly
earned the KWPN a great honor.
The last, and only other time
KWPN horses led the dressage rankings was during the 1992/1993 competition year. Contributing to the ranking
at that time were Ideaal (Doruto),
Fifth ranked Okidoki (Jodokus x
Kentucky by Topas, Breeder: O.
Boonstra) and 20th ranked Sam (Calvados x Notre Dame by Ahorn, Breeder: A.S. Vos) are both ridden by Albert
Zoer.

Arnoldo Thor (Purioso), Attention 017
(Turbo), and Chevalier (Doruto).
Fifth in Eventing
The Irish Studbook ISH (Irish
Sport Horse) led the eventing ranking
last year and leads it again this year.
However, the fact that KWPN-bred
horses are becoming more suited for
eventing is reflected in this year’s
ranking. Climbing from eighth place
last year, the KWPN is now in fifth
place, ahead of the Anglo-Arabian,
British, and Trakehner studbooks,
among others. The best of the six horses that helped earn the KWPN’s number five position is Van Schijndels
Concrex Owaola ster sport(jump)
(Indoctro x Ewaola ster pref s.Joost,
breeder: B.H.M. Nijhuis). The other
five eventers that contributed to the
KWPN’s fifth place ranking are Pardon Me II (Landwind II B x Ilonka
s.Nooitgedacht, breeder H. Deten)
with Emily Llewellyn from England,
Drivetime (Rolls Royce x Etronora
s.Zuidhorn, breeder: J. Dongen) with
Emily Baldwin of England, Nick of
Thyme (Hornet Rose x Jastrona ster
s.Zortin, breeder: A.H.A. Hassing of
Steggerda) with British rider Ruth
Edge, Thunder III (Navarone x Legina
s.Gershwin, breeder: J. Hogenberg)
with Swiss rider Jrina Giesswein,
Treefers (Now or Never M x Isabel
keur sport(jump) s.G.Ramiro Z, breeder: A.J. Reef) with British rider Emily
Parker.

After the silver medal at the
European Championships and
many other international dressage wins during 2009, the
KWPN has granted Totilas Erkend status for his success at
the highest level of competition.
Moorland’s Totilas is one of the rising stars on the global dressage scene
and he exceeded expectations with his
silver medal win in the Spécial at the
European Championships in Windsor.
The black Gribaldi son is out of the
renowned Freiminka-line, an influential dam-line that has produced many
sport horses. In addition to his excellent bloodlines, Totilas has demonstrated exceptional talent. In 2005, he
finished fourth in the World Championships for Young Dressage Horses in
the five-year-old division. Later,
Edward Gal took over and carefully
continued training the stallion. In
2009, he emerged the winner in
Zwolle, De Steeg and Rotterdam. And
now, after winning the silver medal at
the European Championships, the
KWPN has granted Totilas Erkend status, pending vet work.
Future foals sired by Moorland’s
Totilas will be registered in the Foalbook. The stallion's veterinary report
will be published at a later date.*
Moorland’s Totilas will not be bred
while in competition.
*At the time of the above annoucement
Totilas’radiographs had not yet been evaluated. In the meantime the radiographs
have been evaluated and the stallion
passed with flying colors. This now makes
the above announcement and Erkend status of the stallion official.

KWPN SPRING PERFORMANCE TEST
Performance Test produces
15 new Approved Stallions.
2009 SPRING TEST
Eleven dressage and 19 jumper stallions
started the 70-Day Performance Test this
spring. Some continued in the positive
vein shown at the Stallion Show, others
did not. At the final evaluation for the
youngsters on May 18th, three dressage
and five jumper stallions were accepted
into the studbook. One older dressage stallion and three older jumpers had previously been approved. Three harness stallions
were also approved.
Jumper Stallions
Earlier in the spring, the older jumper stallions Quasimodo van de Molendreef
(Heartbreaker x Lys de Darmen), Quality
Time (Quantum x Cantus) and QuerlyElvis (Querlybet Hero x Heartbreaker)
received the go-ahead after the 5-Day and
50-Day Tests.
As for the younger group, four of the six
stallions that participated in the championship keuring at the Stallion Show were
presented, and all were approved. Champion Boss (Indoctro x Nimmerdor)
became looser through the body during the
test. In Den Bosch he was lauded for of his
completeness which he showed again during the test. Half-brother and reserve
champion Bustique (Indoctro x Grannus)
is a long-lined, balanced stallion with
much scope and a good canter. Bacardi
VDL (Corland x Kannan) passed with a
high score for scope. He is the first threeyear-old stallion for which the stallion
committee used their prerogative to
approve a stallion with a class C osteochondrosis. Baltic VDL (Quaprice x Jus
de Pomme) received high points for his
very good reflexes. He is not the most
long-lined horse, but he is a fantastic
jumper. The gray Bugatti VDL (Silverstone x Indoctro) is a balanced stallion,
who proved himself week after week. He
received a 9 for his great reflexes.

x Nimmerdor) who, amongst other things,
was champion of France in 2005. Supardi
did a very good mare test with a nine for
scope. Grandmother Gupardie is a keur
mare by the jumping phenomenon Jasper.
Gupardie’s offspring include two national
jumpers by Boy B and Calvados. The
mare line is further supported by a keur
mare from Fresco, a ster preferent mare

Conformation: Bacardi VDL is a welldeveloped stallion with a good rectangular
though downhill build, who could be a
fraction more modern. The head is expressive and long. The neck has good length,
shape and muscling. The shoulder has
more than sufficient length and sufficient
position. The wither is sufficiently developed. The back has good length and is hollow. The loins are sufficiently muscled and

Breeder: D. Roegiers, Belgium
Owner: J.W. Greve
Pedigree: The Nimmerdor son Heartbreaker was a very successful international jumper. Because of their attitude and
enthusiasm, his offspring are jumpers, just
like Heartbreaker himself. Besides Quasimodo van de Molendreef, mother Jarme
van ‘t Steentje also produced full brother
and BWP approved stallion, Action Breaker. Her father Lys de Darmen is listed in
many international jumper pedigrees. The
damline is further supported by Porche de
Bornival (Lugano x Flugel) and Urao
Brun (Mexico x Flaming xx). From his
Belgian period, Quasimodo van de Molendreef has offspring that are competing successfully in the Young Jumper Championships. Quasimodo van de Molendreef
led the 2007 Belgian jumping index.
Conformation: Quasimodo van de

type stallion with a more than sufficient
rectangular model. The head is expressive.
The head/neck connection is heavy. The

neck has more than sufficient length, good
muscling and comes from deep in the
chest. The wither is well-developed and
has good length. The shoulder has good
length and position. The back has sufficient length and is slightly hollow. The
loins are well muscled and well connected. The croup is short and well muscled.
The tail is set on high. The hamstring has
good length. The foreleg is correct. The
hindleg is also correct. The base is sufficiently developed and hard considering his
age and sport career. The feet are well
developed.
Test report: Quasimodo van de Molendreef was a successful Grand Prix jumper
with Jaime Azcarraga from Mexico.
Because of his Grand Prix career, the stallion did not have to participate in the performance test and came to the testing
exclusively for an evaluation of his stall
behavior.
Stall behavior: An honest, reliable stallion
that is easy to handle and calm in his stall.
Veterinary remarks: There are no veterinary remarks regarding the test. Quasimodo van de Molendreef did not meet the
radiograph requirements of the knee on
the right hind, which was categorized as a
class C Osteochondrosis. The stallion
committee used their prerogative to
approve a stallion with a class C osteochondrosis.
Semen quality: Sufficient.
Breeding advice: Mares must be welldeveloped and have sufficient length in
neck and body. The stallion can add reflexes, attitude and jumping technique.
Dam report: Jarme van ‘t Steentje has a
good rectangular model. The mare is
short-legged and old fashioned with a
downhill build. The head is coarse and the
jaws are heavy. The poll is short and not
very chiseled in the jaw area. The neck has
good length, muscling and normal position. The wither is well-developed and
long. The shoulder is straight and sufficiently long. The back is very weak; not
surprising considering her age (25). Two
of the mare’s offspring that were also
inspected did have a good topline. The
loins are a little weak but have good
muscling. The croup is short and a little
straight. The hamstring has observably
good length. The gaskin is well developed.
The foreleg is a little back at the knee. The
hindleg is correct. The pastern is short and
a normal stance. The hooves have good
shape and a sufficient heel. The base is
heavy and blurred. (One inspected offspring has hard legs, the other has blurred
legs.) The walk is correct. The trot and
canter could not be evaluated due to age.
The mare jumped at Z level.
Height 1.69m, color: chestnut
Dressage Stallions
The only older dressage stallion to be
approved was four-year-old Aqiedo (b.
Addo), who passed the 50-day test with a
good canter score.
Three young stallions received the goahead from the committee after the 70Day Test. Briljant (Uphill x Darlington)
was a good riding type at the Stallion
Show and only became more so during the
test. He received good scores especially
for the walk and canter. The big-framed
Boston (Jazz x Goodtimes) also passed.
Although he still needs to get stronger he
showed much self-carriage and moved
uphill. Bodyguard (Gribaldi x Negro) is a
stallion with good workability and an
exceptional canter.

hooves are good in regards to size but the
heel is a little underslung.
Stall behavior: An honest, reliable stallion

Breeding advice: Bristol can improve
model and substance. Mares must have a
correct hindleg.
Pedigree: In 2007, sire Uromast won the
Oregon Trophy and the Dutch stallion
championship. Afterward he was sold to
the Amish in the U.S. Avontuur is his first
approved son. The mother of Avontuur is
the large size Hackney mare Inge Beauty
(s. John’s Firstling) who is frequently used
for harness horse breeding. Dutch Hackney Studbook has her on the books as keur
eligible. Besides Avontuur, she has produced eight harness offspring, including a
mare by Waterman. In 1995, John’s
Firstling was the champion of the Dutch
Hackney Stallion Show. Dolly’s Centurion, the great-grandfather of Inge Beauty, is
also the great-grandfather of approved
stallion Moneymaker. Being half Hackney
makes Avontuur interesting in the fight
against inbreeding.

the same title this year. A few of the best
known competition horses by Larix are
Platoon, Raymond, Van Bon, Viam,
Zwieber and the top performing daughters
Sarianne, Seronica and Zabrina HBC.
Bakboord HBC is the fourth approved
Larix son, following Reflex M, Roy M
and Tendens HBC. The mare line is classically bred, and therefore Bakboord HBC
has only 6.25% Hackney blood. Grandmother Guwalda is the great-grandmother
of the approved stallion Wodka HBC (s.
Roy M). Bakboord’s mare line goes back
to the triple broodmare champion Nuwalda ster pref (s. Ziezo), who produced several competition horses including Vlo
HBC (s. Reflex M), the 2006 Champion
Four-Year-Old.
The hindleg is correct but a little long. The
legs have quality and the feet are well
developed.
Conformation: Bakboord HBC is a very
well-developed stallion with a very good
harness type. The head is expressive. The
neck is shaped well and set on well. The
well-developed wither/shoulder formation
has good length and position. The topline
is good. The croup has good length and
position. The foreleg is long and correct.
Stall behavior: An honest, reliable stallion
that is easy to handle and calm in his stall.
Test report: Bakboord HBC is an honest,
reliable but somewhat sensitive stallion.
He has a sensitive mouth. He often has
trouble with balance. He is very willing to
work and drives more than sufficiently.
The walk is moderate. In front of the show
cart the stallion rises well in the front and
carries his neck well. Bakboord HBC has
a lot of knee action and extends the leg forward. The hindlegs bend more than sufficiently and come underneath well. The trot
has good suspension. The stallion is very
enthusiastic. Bakboord HBC has more
than sufficient talent for harness work and
gives his driver a good feeling.
Veterinary remarks: No remarks.
Semen quality: Sufficient.
Breeding advice: Bakboord HBC should
be able to improve on type and lines with,
for example, mares that have a lot of
improvement blood that are a little less
harness-like in regards to type.
Dam report: Nuwalda II is a generously
developed mare with a sufficient harness
type. The head is shaped well. The poll has
sufficient length. The neck has sufficient
length but could be set on a little more vertically and is a little ewe-necked. The mare
has a lot of wither. The shoulder has sufficient length, but should have more slope.
The mare has a strong back. The loins are
tight. The croup is rather flat and has sufficient length. The foreleg has good length
and correct position. The hindleg is a little
long but has good position. The pastern is
straight. The hooves are well developed.
The base should show more quality. The
walk has sufficient scope, but should show
more suppleness. The mare rises well in
front during the trot and uses the foreleg
well, but she should develop more power
from behind. The mare was in poor condition.

INNOVATIVE RESEARCH: MEASURING TEMPERAMENT
The goal of the KWPN is to breed
a performance horse that can compete
at the highest level of the sport. To
achieve this goal, a horse obviously
must have a healthy constitution, correct and functional conformation, and
correct movement. However, optimum performance requires another
key element: a good temperament.
The concept of temperament has
been part of the KWPN’s breeding
goal for years. Indeed, a willing and
cooperative temperament is an important quality if a sport horse is to perform well. The KWPN was the first
studbook in the world to measure temperament traits.
How to Measure Temperament
Before we can know the temperament traits desirable in a sport horse,
we must first have a way of measuring
traits. In 2008, the KWPN took the
first step toward making temperament
measurable by developing a score
sheet for evaluating temperament
qualitatively. In collaboration with scientists from the Animal Sciences
Group of Wageningen University
(WUR), KWPN inspectors researched
the relevant traits for sport horses in
the scope of the KWPN’s breeding
goals. They also studied how to qualitatively score such traits, which led to
the drafting of a score sheet with a provisional list of traits. The next step will
be to research the extent to which the
list is based on objective data. After
that step is complete, this new knowledge can be put to use.
Temperament Breeding Values
The development of breeding values for temperament traits is just one
example of how research data will be
used in the future. Currently, breeders
can use KWPN data on conformation
and movement to select the best stallions to breed to their mares. In the
future, the KWPN aims to offer a similar service for selecting temperament.
Its goal is to use the results of the temperament study to provide more information to breeders about how stallions
pass on certain temperament traits to
their offspring.
