Lazio
the allure
of timeless
history
A diverse territory, ranging from coast to volcanic crater lakes and from natural parks
to the Apennines, forming a backdrop for the enduring traces of every era: the great Roman
villas, the imposing castles built to defend the coast, the little medieval towns, the enchanting
“places of the spirit” that draw so many pilgrims. This is Lazio, a land brimming with historic,
architectural, cultural and environmental treasures, home to myriad visitor routes and trails.
FAI - Fondo Ambiente Italiano will take you on a journey of discovery
of one of this region’s many jewels: the historic Tibur Superbum.
Originally given this name by Virgil, Tivoli is now considered
a centre of cultural excellence, following the inclusion of Villa d’Este
and Villa Adriana in the list of World Heritage Sites. To be taken
back to the period of the Grand Tour, simply visit the charming
Villa Gregoriana Park, this marvel shaped by the moving waters,
entrusted to FAI and opened to the public in 2005 following
major landscaping restoration work.

romantic walks,

of Tivoli
A splendid walk
A dense wood of gigantic trees, the remains of ancient buildings,
dizzying precipices, sheer rockfaces, sunlit green glades, rocky
paths, little tunnels and natural caves.
In Tivoli, just a stone’s throw from Rome, lies Villa Gregoriana
Park, created by Pope Gregory XVI using the old bed of the
river Aniene, following the devastation of the floods in 1826.
Visited by travellers, poets, artists, kings and emperors down the
centuries, but left abandoned and decaying by the end of the
twentieth century, Villa Gregoriana Park - on lease to FAI from
the Italian Agency for Public Properties (Agenzia del Demanio)
since 2002 - was reopened to the public in 2005 following
massive landscaping restoration work.

The flower that grew
from a frightful event
There are tragedies in history that, once the drama
has passed, end up becoming a source of pleasure.
Villa Gregoriana is a perfect example: it arose from the
desire to transform an environmental disaster - the floods
of 1826 - into a project of great aesthetic and social value.
It was 1835 when, after the river had burst its banks yet

again, Pope Gregory XVI decided to transform this spellbinding but extremely perilous spot into a model of integration between art and nature. The project involved tunnelling through Mount Catillo, in order to divert the river
and thus preserve the town of Tivoli, and then creating an
extraordinary natural garden overlooked by the acropolis
with the captivating temples of Vesta and of Sibyl.
The romantic meeting
between majesty
and tranquillity
Villa Gregoriana differs from Villa Adriana and Villa
d’Este in that it is an exclusively natural park, created
for the enjoyment of the community. It lies on two
sides of a deep ravine, where the Aniene river used to
tumble 100 metres down and onwards into the Roman
countryside. Amidst dizzyingly breathtaking views and
natural caves that whisper of old legends, when you
stroll through the thick woods of Villa Gregoriana Park,

Villa Adriana

The largest and most splendid of Roman
imperial villas stands some 20 km from
Rome, on a low plateau below the city of
Tivoli, where numerous aristocratic families had their residences at that time.
The complex of buildings making up
this extraordinary residence was built by
Emperor Hadrian between AD 118 and
134, and is listed by UNESCO as a World
Heritage Site due to its uniqueness.
The villa included Hadrian’s private residence, collective lodgings, buildings for
entertainments, spas and large triclinia for
luxurious banquets.
The villa’s architectural and sculptural
decorations were extraordinarily elaborate. The most valuable works have been
removed, and can now be visited at major
museums in Rome and around the world
(these include over 400 sculptures of
extremely high quality, some in coloured
marble, and mosaics with minuscule tiles:
one particularly famous example is the
picture of doves drinking from a golden
basin, now at the Capitoline Museum).
Nonetheless visitors are still struck by the
refinement of the floors and walls of inlaid
coloured marble (opus sectile), of which
some splendid examples remain.
For the pleasure of its many visitors, the
Villa is also open at night during the summer events season, organised in collaboration with Fondazione Musica per Roma.

Villa d’Este
INFO VILLA D’ESTE
Piazza Trento, 1 - 00019 Tivoli (Roma)
Tel. 0774 312070 [email protected]
[email protected]
Villa d’Este is a masterpiece of the Italian
renaissance, and a UNESCO World Heritage
Site. It is famed mainly for the innumerable
fountains in its remarkable garden.
Construction of the villa was begun in 1560
by Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este, on a design by
the antiquarian and architect Pirro Ligorio.
The hill was drastically reshaped, the main
fountains were built, and a diversion channel was dug to bring water from the Aniene
river to feed the complex hydraulic system
that is still gravity fed to this day, and serves
the over 50 fountains and innumerable jets,
cascades and other water features.
The rooms inside the villa, which was built
around an existing Franciscan monastery, still preserve decorations by Roman
Mannerist artists. In the period 16601670, further works were added, with
the involvement of Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
After a period of decline, the villa regained
favour in the 19th century, and was dearly
loved by various artists, including the musician Franz Liszt, who composed Les Jeux
d’Eaux à la Villa d’Este here. At the time of
the First World War, it was taken over by
the Italian state, restored and opened to the
public.
In recent years a major restoration campaign and adaptation of museum services
have considerably enhanced the complex,
which can now be visited in its entirety.
The villa occasionally hosts cultural events,
exhibitions, concerts and conventions.
Thanks to the new lighting system in the
gardens, visitors can now also enjoy the enchantment of a nighttime visit.

This modern, family-run hotel stands on the Via Tiburtina, opposite the Acque
Albule spa. The hotel has 40 well-equipped bedrooms, with satellite TV, air conditioning and minibar. It also has a conference room. It is conveniently positioned
for both road and rail links to Rome, Tivoli city centre, Villa Adriana and Guidonia.
This excellent positioning also makes it handy for a stay in Rome, enabling guests
to save money thanks to the lower prices here than in the capital. In addition to
cultural tourism, we can also meet the needs of guests seeking a spa holiday.
The hotel is structured to be able to host groups and school parties.
The Hotel, formerly the “Locanda dell’Incannucciata”, affords you all the benefits of the
countryside and its privacy. The Cinelli family, proprietors of this late 19th century residence
for three generations, express their creative personality in the art of hospitality and catering.
The hotel offers 10 bedrooms including 3 suites with all amenities, and owes its fortune to the
fact that it stands right alongside the archaeological complex of Villa Adriana. In the “Livre d’or”
you can find the signatures of such illustrious guests as: Fellini, Bergman, Ullmann, Jacqueline
Kennedy, Queen Elizabeth II and others. Great care, creativity and sensitivity is poured into the
preparation of food, from light snacks to multiple-course menus. The surrounding park and
gardens, which come into their own in the summer months, are brought to life by the cafeteria
by day and the candlelight dinners in the evenings. Unforgettable buffets are available for
open-air ceremonies, which can also be arranged inside the grounds of Villa Adriana.
