THE CONCERTONE 20/20 RECORDER
As the phenomenal growth of tape recording continues and
recorder owners become more and more exacting, it behooves
the manufacturer to see to it that he keeps pace with these
increasing requirements.
It has been the constant aim of Berlant Associates to produce
a tape recorder of the highest possible quality at a price that
the average music lover and sound enthusiast could afford to
pay. It is this determination that has brought Concertone to
such a dominant position in the recording industry. Year by
year we have incorporated improvements in design and work·
manship whenever it was possible to make a better Concertone
by doing so.
In the meantime Mr. 8ert Berlant and his engineering staff
have been engaged in a long-term project, the development of
an entire ly new type of recorder that would not only keep up
with the amazing progress of the recording art, but would lead
the way to new standards of simplicity, dependability and per.
formance.
For more than two and a half yea rs they have designed,
tested, disca rded, stud ied, redesigned, retested , disagreed, ar·
gued, restudied ... and so on through many such cycles until
they came up with what has aptly been called "the answer to
the audiophile's prayer"-The Concertone 20/20!
Out ahead of it, as a so rt of advance_ guard, came another
model, a strictly professional job, the Berlant Broadcast Re·
corder, BR·!. Introduced last May in Chicago, it proved to be
the sensation of the National Electronic and NARTB Shows.
Its price of $545 for a machine that surpassed in versatility
and performance record ers selling for two and three times that
much left competitors gasping.
It can now be revealed how our engineers took a page from
the book of General Motors and the other giants of the auto·
motive industry, which cut costs enormously by stamping out
body shells and casting many of the parts for their various
lines of cars from the same set of dies. We decided to do
the same with the Broadcast Recorder and the 20/ 20.
Only by spreading the cost of the many precision dies over
both lines of· machines could we give you so much for lour
money. Most of the parts, therefore, in the 20/ 20 are iden ical
with those in the Broadcast. On ly such compon ents as motors
and the ex.terior finish are different. Tha t is the explanation
why the Concertone 20/20 is the ultimate in the high fidelity
field-a truly professional recorder at a fraction of the price
of any comparable model.
If you need further proof, iust read the accompanying speci.
fications.

CUEING AND EDITING
The cuein g position of the BR·l's
unified control places the tape
in contact with the heads and
releases the brakes so that the
reels can be rotated by hand
whil e l istening to the signa l.
When the exact cue point is
re ac hed , the cont rol lever is
swi tch ed to editing position,
opening the head cover for easy
access to the tape.
ERASE SAFETY
Positive interlock of record system with the control leve l makes
acciden tal erasure impossible.
SIGNAL LEVEL INDICATOR
An extremely accurate and stab le
VTVM circuli measures bias
level. The 4'12" illuminated meter
is a dependable guide to the
opera tor at all times.
STRAIGHT LINE THREADING
Qui ck and simp le loading is
achieved by straight line threading of the tape , which , in operatio n, is complete ly entrapped
with in hardened ground guides.
Striction effects, amplitude var iations and tracking efror are
reduced be low any former
standards.
TENSION ARMS
Unique design of the tension
arms makes for fa ci lit y in loading and prope r filtering of disturbances in th e tape motion.
THREE MOTORS
Combined wit h the new Unisync
Drive are two expertly engineered, heavy duty torque motors
for proper tape motion in record,
playback, fast forwa rd and rewind
positions.
ADJUSTABLE BIAS
A bias level adjustment with ade·
quate reserve pe rmits resetting
bi as to suit spec ial requirements
of various tape coatings for per·
fection in recording .
AUTOMATIC CUT·oFF
In case of tape breakage or runout, recorder is automatically
turned off.

DEPENDAB ILITY
Designed and built for continuous
operation under the most rigorous
conditions, this recorder combines rugged components and
advanced engineering to guar-
antee max imum dependabili ty
with minimum maintenance.
SIMPLICITY
New concepts in design, construc-
tion and operation result in a
functiona l simplicity that is reflected in the recorder's performance, dependability and last, but
not least - economy_
To the Engineer:
Compare this machine, point by
point, with any other recorder on
the market, regardless of price.
You will find it the ideal recorder
for your needs.
