EGSPC Supported Entry

clear morning, Ginger, Heidi, and I
headed to East Freehold Park in
Freehold, NJ for the Monmouth
County Kennel Club Specialty Show.
GSPs were scheduled for 8:30 am
with a field of 7 dogs and 10 bitches.
Judging started on time with Mr.
Carlos Navarro (Mexico) casting a
careful eye on all of the entries
presented to him. Upon completion
of the judging the major held for the
bitches, but not for the dogs. Results
as follows:

EGSPC Specialty with Sweepstakes
With the temperatures soaring, Heidi
and Ginger took the day off to stay
cool, so off I went alone for another
exciting day at East Freehold Park in
Freehold, NJ. Sweepstakes began at
9:15 am with Mr. Lawrence C.
Terricone judging. The results of the
Sweepstakes are as follows:

PRESIDENTʼS MESSAGE
Here we are halfway through the year and I have some questions for you:
Do you like meeting people? Do you enjoy walking in the fresh brisk air? Do you like to cook? How
about cleaning up after an event—some people really love it! Are you a top sales person when it comes
to 50/50 tickets? Are you aces at getting donations for raffles? Or do you just want to help out wherever
itʼs needed and at the same time learn more about German Shorthaired Pointers?
If you answered yes to any or all of the above then I encourage you to come to at least one of the
events sponsored by the club or rescue. You can sign up to volunteer before hand so you know whatʼs
expected or just show up and look for the person in charge. Theyʼll surely be able to use your help and
will show you the ropes.
Volunteering for an event gives you a totally different perspective on the club and helps you better
understand how we promote our beloved breed. Get a behind the scenes peak!
If youʼre not ready to volunteer yet, just attend any event and get to know your fellow members. No
matter what level of expertise we have—from those involved for a long time to those who are new to the
breed—we all learn from each other. An ideal opportunity to learn about the club and rescue is at our
Education Day!! There are demonstrations and activities. You can participate or just watch. Either way
youʼll get to know the GSP instinct and personality better. See their natural instincts kick in – itʼs really
amazing. Full details on education day and other events are on page 8.
Itʼs FUN FUN FUN!!!! We hope to see you. Have a safe summer and stay COOL..

take place during a
specialty show?

EGSPC, and is usually
held in conjunction with an
all-breed dog club show, such as the Somerset Hills
Kennel Club or Plainfield Kennel Club. An alternative to
this type of specialty is an independent specialty where
several breed clubs get together and each host their own
specialty. A show of this type is held in February at the
Meadowlands Sports Complex.
In either case, a specialty is a very significant event for the
breed club and in most instances will draw a substantial
number of entries resulting in a major for dogs and
bitches. Majors are desired, especially for owners that
seek points toward a championship for their dogs.
Although a specialty is comprised for the most part of
conformation activities, obedience and rally events are
also included. Agility, field, and hunt activities are separate
events, however most of the dogs entered in a specialty
also participate in these activities. Owners are happy to
share their knowledge about the breed and talk about the
events that best illustrate the versatility of the breed.
In general, specialties are a great place to learn about
breed standards and an excellent resource for networking
with both experts and novices.
Q. Do you have to be a GSP expert to volunteer as a
helper for an event?
A. Absolutely not!!!! We are all beginners at some point
and volunteering at club events helps us increase our
knowledge to eventually become experts.
Q. What opportunities are available for volunteers?
A. Show Chair - This is my position, though it will be my last
year. That said, I will be available to assist anyone
interested in taking over. The show chair is responsible for
the overall coordination of the specialty, working closely
with the all-breed dog club chair and submitting all
necessary paperwork to the AKC. The chair handles the

Although there was one move-up in dogs and one absent
in bitches, both majors held. Mrs. Clark reviewed each
entry carefully and acknowledged each handler by
thanking them for presenting their dogs to her. Results are

Mrs. Clark thanked all of the exhibitors and noted that she
had never seen a better field of GSPs than those

I feel honored to have been the show chair for this event.

successful raffle, EGSPC President Jackie Gerber,
Corresponding Secretary Robin Young, and club members
Ellen and Frank Cavalla for their help throughout the
planning phases of this event. To all other club members
who have helped, your support and assistance throughout

Trophy Chair – Obtains sponsorship fees for the
various classes that take place during a given specialty
and ensures that sponsorship fees cover trophy
expenses. Must be present the day of the specialty to
coordinate the trophies on site.
Luncheon Chair - Contacts members via email,
phone, or snail mail for food donations; organizes
response and manages lunch on the day of the
specialty.
SPECIALTY SHOWS end of story
event budget and organizes the other volunteers. She or
he is also responsible for coordinating the Education Day.
Assistant Show Chair - Works with the show chair
learning the various aspects of developing a specialty
event in the hopes of eventually moving into the
position of show chair; is also a member of the show
committee.
Field Trial • March 11-13, 2011 •English Setter Club of America, Medford, NJ
The day ran smoothly with 94 entries. Saturday evening we enjoyed a nicely catered judges dinner at the
clubhouse. Between Pat McCarthy's outstanding job in the kitchen and the assistance of the field trial committee
members, the event was a success. Thank you to all the judges and participants who spent their weekend with
us. We look forward to seeing everyone again at our upcoming October 2011 FT at the same location. Any questions

Spring Hunt Test • April 23, 2011 •Buttonwood Game Preserve, Phillipsburg, NJ
This year our hunt test was held for one day only due to the Easter holiday. April showers were in full effect and
unfortunately we had steady rain until about 11 am and overcast skies for the rest of the day.
We ran two courses, MH/SH on one and JH on another. All courses were without a bird field in which all bird work
was done on course including retrieving and honoring. The hunt test committee decided to try this format as it
reflects a more “true” hunting situation.
It seems everyone had a positive experience with this style of hunt test. Financially it was a success, so we will try
to do the same for next year. One of the biggest reasons for the success of this hunt test was all the help we had
to run the event. This includes 8 judges, 4 gunners, 6 bird planters, 2 line marshals, cook/kitchen help, and all the
other people that just come out to help in general. The donations to the kitchen and raffle should be noted as well.
I am truly grateful —thank you so much!
Our next hunt test will be Oct. 22-23 2011, location to be determined. I will be sending out an email for a hunt test
meeting to be held in July. If youʼd like to be on the committee for the fall hunt test please let me know via email so
we can coordinate the meeting. As always we will be in need of volunteers and if you can come out to help even
for a couple of hours that would be great! Hope to see you all at the fall hunt test.

FOR GSPS
It might sound a little funny, but
did you know that the Eastern
German Shorthaired Pointer
Club is not just for GSPs?
There are several members
with sporting breeds who
chose the EGSPC for its
camaraderie and reputation
for excellence.
Here are two of their stories.
Member: Deb & Howard Wright
My wife and I have English Pointers
and Italian Spinonis. When I was
growing up, my dad always had
English Pointers and we always had
a good hunting dog. My wife
introduced me to the “Spins” after
watching the Westminster Dog
Show. We got Maggie (Spinoni) as a
pup and she was trained off Sandy
(Pointer). Sandy ranged far and didn't
miss a thing. Maggie works close and
learned very quickly to honor Sandy. The difference in these two breeds is
that the English covers a lot of ground
quickly where the Spinoni scents long
distances and works close. As a
result of Maggie working with Sandy I
ended up with a pointing dog that
stands a pheasant at about 14 feet
and the bird has no idea a dog
is anywhere around. So the English hunts far and covers
a lot of ground while the Spinoni
hunts close and scents pretty far. I
cross train my Spins to work with
pointers so they range more than
usual for the breed. I found Pat the black and white
pointer on the Internet. Sandy was
12 at the time when I came back

from overseas and I wanted to bring
in another hunting dog. One
important point about Sandy — she
was a rescue.
Around the time we brought Maggie
home Deb joined the Spinoni Club of
America
and
worked
with rescue. She rescued two older
Spins and we had them for five and
six years before they passed. The
best part of life for these two was with
Deb and they were tremendous
friends. Through the Spinoni Club of
America we met Patti Johnson of
Indiana Spinoni and got Ernie our
four-year-old, then Bert who is almost
two. Ernie just passed his fourth leg
of JH with our club and got his CGC
last summer. I chose being a member of the
EGSPC because of the members. I
was raised around dogs and
hunting, but am very new to hunt
tests. A friend got me interested
when I helped him with his
retriever. As we travelled with his
dog, I got more interested in hunt
testing my own. I checked online
and found the Eastern German
Shorthaired Pointer Club and signed
up for an event. When I arrived at

the test site everyone made me feel
like we had known each other for
years and I joined our club.
I really like to participate and help
out in hunt tests. I ran my pup in our
last puppy field trials and helped out
there also. I attended the fun day and
awards banquet. I enjoy helping out
with club events. The brakes will be
temporarily put on all activities July 1
when I have both hips replaced.
By attending hunt tests and activities
with the Club, I get new ideas on ways
to train my pointing dogs. We now
train to the hunt test standards and not
just locating, pointing, and retrieving
birds. Now Ernie knows the difference
between what commands come with
the shotgun and what to expect with
the blank gun. Training for hunt tests has brought my
dogs to a higher level of bird finding
skills due to the year round work. I
have always run my guys year round
and now we do bird work year round
too. I encourage people to join the
EGSPC for the same reasons I
joined. At Club events I get to talk
with people and always recommend
they join our club.

decade of Herculean efforts by U.S. sportsman Howard
Knight to be granted permission from the German
Weimaraner Club to bring the first reproductively viable
specimens to this country.
World War II gave impetus to getting quality dogs out of
Europe and into the relative safety of the United States. In
the 1950s the Weimaraner became the “dog de jour” and
reached the heady heights of being proclaimed the new
wonder dog. Outlandish claims of super hunting prowess,
uncanny intelligence and trainability over popularized the
Weimaraner. As time passed, reality reasserted itself and
today, the Weimaraner has its place as a versatile hunting
breed, an excellent companion and dog sport competitor.
The instincts of a companion, hunting breed go beyond the
expected, historical functionality of the breed. Our dogs
spend far more time as our companions and need this
social interaction thatʼs found in the human/canine pack.
Take them to a dog event and they radiate happiness of
doing something with their human partner. The EGSPC has
provided so many opportunities for dogs and human alike.
My three Weimaraners are:
•Moxie (CH Chatawey nʼ Zaraʼs Gotalotamox Z, JH, NA,
NAJ, NSD, NRD, CGC, V.) and sheʼs still going strong at
almost 11 years of age.
•Zoie (Chataweyʼs Say It Ainʼt Zo, JH, NSD, CGC) – I got
Zoie as the result of a divorce of her original owners
where, “…no one wanted the dog.” Before you feel sorry
for Zoie, let me tell you sheʼs unscarred by rejection and
is a happy 10-year-old.
•Friend-Zee (CH Zephyr nʼ Zaraʼs Friend-Zee, JH, NSD,
NRD, CGC, V) Friend-Zee was a singleton puppy who is
currently in Agility training. Heʼs a 5-years-old who lives
to make you laugh.

Iʼve known many of the members of EGSPC for years and
found that I was attending most of the club events. I
thought: If Iʼm acting like a member, I should be a
member, and the club agreed. Good dog people make an
active, inclusive club and that defines the EGSPC. I have
been a member for 2 years now. Hereʼs a little more
about my breed and how it fits into the club. Come to an
event and see what itʼs all about!
Secretly developed, linked with nobility, closely guarded
from the outside world — weʼre not talking about a plot for
a new action movie. No, itʼs the earliest history of the
Weimaraner. While theories abound about what breeds
were used in its development, the truth remains cloaked
in mystery and hidden in the big game hunting history of
central Germanyʼs Thuringian forests.
Although the breed characteristics were developed in the
early 19th century, it was not until 1929 that the first
Weimaraners reached U.S. shores. It took more than a
