The silver age of
JUKEBOXES Circa 1952-1962
The Silver Age of jukeboxes covered a ten year period from the
early 1950’s to around 1962. In general terms machines from
the early 1950’s still had many characteristics from the
1930’s and 1940’s Golden Age of the jukebox such as an
expanse of coloured plastic glowing with light. By 1954/55
jukebox designers were being influenced by American
automobiles of the period with plenty of curved glass and
chrome. By the end of the 1950’s some
jukeboxes even featured ‘tail fins’ and
chrome ‘tail lights’ and by 1961, when Yuri
Gagarin orbited the earth, jukebox styles
had evolved and were often ‘Space Age’ in
appearance. In Britain, as in the USA,
Holland and Germany many thousands
of Silver Age jukeboxes are ‘alive and
well’ in private homes thumping out
Elvis numbers from the 50’s to ‘top ten’
vinyl 45 RPM singles of today (yes, they
are still available!). Not many owners
are lucky enough to boast that they
have a ‘collection’ of jukeboxes but all
are ‘vinyl collectors’ as they strive for
that perfect selection on their machines.
The values of Silver Age jukeboxes have
steadily risen over the past few years
and the trend is set to continue as these
machines reach their half-centuries.
The cost of purchasing a ‘Silver Age’
jukebox very much depends on the
condition, restoration and desirability
with prices ranging from around £2,000
to as much as £10,000 !
Picture captions: Each of the ‘big four’
manufacturers from the Silver Age are
represented: Rock-Ola 1454 (1956),
AMi Continental (‘61), Wurlitzer 1700 (‘54), Seeburg 201 (‘58).
