MISSING MEMBERS
Paragraph 218 of the United Methodist Book of Discipline states,
“Faithful membership in the local church is essential for personal growth
and for developing a deeper commitment to the will and grace of God....
GET YOUR
BAG
LUNCH
SUNDAY, MAY 17
l Take a cooking break.
AND
l Support Youth Mission
Project ’15.
AND
l Enjoy a tasty lunch.
On Sunday, May 17,
don’t miss the Youth
Bag Lunch Sale –
Chicken fingers, chips,
slaw and a brownie...
for only $5.
Lunches will be available
after Sunday school and
after the 11:00 a.m.
worship services at
multiple locations
around the Shandon
campus.
All proceeds go to Youth
Mission Project 2015.
...As members involve themselves in public and private prayer, worship, the sacraments,
study, Christian action, systematic giving, and holy discipline, they grow in their
appreciation of Christ, understanding of God at work in history, and the natural order,
and an understanding of themselves.”
Paragraph 219 carries the theme of faithful church membership further. It states,
“Faithful discipleship includes the obligation to participate in the corporate life of the
congregation with fellow members of the body of Christ. A member is bound in sacred
covenant to shoulder the burdens, share the risks, and celebrate the joys of fellow
members……..”
But what does the church do when members become inactive in the church.
The Book of Discipline outlines a two-year process that the church should follow. The
church shall do all in its power to restore the inactive member. The church is to contact
the member and request that the inactive member do one of four things:
1. Reaffirm their membership vows and return to active membership
2. Request transfer to another Methodist Church
3. Request transfer to a church of another denomination
4. Request withdrawal
If a member does not comply with any of these within a two year period the
members name is removed from the church. Of course the ill or shut-ins are not
identified as inactive members. In 2014, we began this process at Shandon, and we
are continuing the process this year. If inactive members do not comply with the four
choices above, their names will be removed from the roll at Charge Conference this fall.
If a member’s address is not known, their names are to be published to the
congregation for a two year period, and if the address does not become known those
members are removed from the roll of the church.
Included in this issue of The Voice are the names of members for whom we do
not have a current address. Please review this list carefully and if you know the
address of any of these missing members, please report their correct address to
Jennifer Cox at 256-8383, ext. 101 or email her at [email protected].
The Church has a moral and spiritual obligation to reach out to its
non-participating members. - In Faith, Michael Guffee, Sr.
