G
reetings from all of us at Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia. Welcome
to the first issue of Evolution for
2013, and the 20th issue since
we started this newsletter for the Mitsubishi
family in Malaysia. We hope you enjoy
reading it.
The start of each year is a good time to
reflect on the year that has passed, and look
Standing with the Mirage Eco Run
forward to a better one ahead. Looking back,
winners Chips, Masuoka and Daniel
2012 was an incredibly busy year for us at
MMM, but the most important event for us
was the introduction of the all-new Mitsubishi Mirage.
The Mirage is proof that small can sometimes be more. It’s a fantastic car for urban people - compact
but spacious, filled with luxuries normally found on bigger, more expensive cars, and best of all, class
leading fuel consumption of 21 km/l.
We invited two-time Dakar Rally champion Hiroshi Masuoka to Malaysia to join a media test drive of
the Mirage. In a drive to Port Dickson and Melaka, Masuoka and many members of the press achieved
fuel consumption figures that were better than 21 km/l, with two adults in the car and air-con on.
I was truly impressed at the results we got, and so were the media members. The following day,
everyone saw the other side of the Mirage (the fun side) on a tight and challenging track in Melaka,
where our rally champion pushed the Mirage to the limits.
Before he left for Japan, we got Masouka-san, who is Mitsubishi Motors’ chief test driver and trainer,
to share with us tips and tricks to drive efficiently for the best fuel consumption. Find out more on page
12, and log on to Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia’s Facebook and Youtube page to view the videos.
Speaking of events, I had the pleasure of joining 30 Triton owners on a roadtrip to the Lost World of
Tambun in Ipoh. The excursion was a fun outing, and we spend the night camping under the stars. It’s
great that the Mitsubishi family continues to maintain close relations via regular outings and activities,
and we look forward to the next one.
We started 2013 in an “electrifying” way with the launch of the Mitsubishi i-MiEV. The innovative
i-MiEV is the first fully electric, zero emissions battery powered car that the public can buy and own in
Malaysia. The future is here, and you can read all about it on page 10.
Last but not least, we’ve lined up a host of fun activities involving registered Mitsubishi
customers in our future events. Help us stay in touch with you by updating your profile
at our official website www.mitsubishi-motors.com.my under Owner Profile.
Till the next issue, Happy Motoring!

INTERVIEW
Me and my Black Beauty
T
his issue, Evolution chats with proud
Mitsubishi owner Ahmad Fuad Bin Abdul
Rahim, who calls his beloved Triton
“Black Beauty”. The Penang resident, who
is married with two kids, loves travelling and
mountain biking, but has recently took to tackling
rough terrain in his Triton.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD YOUR TRITON?
I have owned my Mitsubishi Triton, a black beauty
2.5A turbo diesel, since June 2012.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE TRITON?
WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT IT?
I chose the Triton because it is undeniably a
standout performer. With the powerful engine,
excellent interior comfort and superior safety, the
Triton is a step ahead of the competition. I simply
like the curves, but it also maintains a tough image - wherever it roams on the road and off road.
CAN YOU SHARE WITH US A MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE OR TRIP WITH YOUR
TRITON?
I went up Fraser’s Hill and Cameron Highlands
with my family recently. The Triton was very stable
at high speeds when cruising on the highway.
Climbing up hills and taking sharp corners have
never been easy before, but with the Triton, worry
is a thing of the past. I can easily overtake slower
vehicles even on the steep sections. My children
love the thrill, sitting comfortably at the back seat
and enjoying the scenery.
I love gardening. We brought back a lot of
potted plants and stuff from Cameron Highlands,
thanks to the spacious cargo bed. We can’t wait
to have another family trip and this time probably
go off road!
WHAT’S YOUR DAILY DRIVE ROUTINE
LIKE? HOW’S THE FUEL CONSUMPTION/COMFORT/PERFORMANCE OF
THE TRITON?
It is actually my wife who drives the car to
work every day. The distance from our house
to her workplace is about 25km. On average,
fuel consumption is 9 litres per 100km without
carrying a heavy load. We couldn’t ask for
more!
When on the road, other cars tend to let her
pass, and that was the main reason why I let her
drive the Triton to work. She also gets plenty of
attention from other drivers at traffic lights!
WHERE DO YOU BRING YOUR CAR TO
SERVICE? HOW HAS THE SERVICE EXPERIENCE BEEN?
My Triton reached the 10,000km mark last month.
I sent it to JM Auto Gallery in Butterworth. They
did a good job. I always have trust in Mitsubishi
trained mechanics.
What I am happy to see is a lot more genuine
Mitsubishi accessories and merchandise like tshirt, stickers and decals on display at the service
centre. Mitsubishi should open more Ralliart
boutiques nationwide and the service centre can
consider organising a fun outing with their regular
customers occasionally.

speeds when cruising on the highway.

corners have never been easy before”

New Triton Single Cab
M
itsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM)
recently added a new member to
the award-winning Triton pickup truck range. The new Triton
Single Cab offers a balance of power,
toughness and reliability.
Targeted at those who transport goods
and machinery on a heavy duty usage, the
Triton Single Cab is powered by a 2.8 litre indirect
injection non-turbo engine that makes 97 hp at
4,000 rpm and 198 Nm of torque from 2,000
rpm.
The robust engine is paired to a 5-speed
manual transmission, and power is channelled
to the wheels via Mitsubishi’s Easy Select 4WD
system which allows the driver to “shift on the fly”
from 2WD to 4WD at speeds of up to 100 km/h.
The indirect injection diesel engine of the Triton
Single Cab is designed to accept varying quality
of diesel fuel, reducing the risk of engine damage
even when fuel quality is compromised. Such
consideration makes the Triton Single Cab the
best transport for the agricultural and plantation
industry that is usually situated in remote areas.
In addition, the Single Cab’s cargo bed has a
large capacity and a low cargo height of 845 mm
for easy loading.
Priced at RM 70,409.60 on-the-road without
insurance, the affordable and fully imported Triton
Single Cab is available in White Solid. Owners
enjoy a 3-year/100,000 km warranty as well as
Mitsubishi’s 2-Years free maintenance package.

Tritons take on
the Lost World
30 owners and their families camp under the stars
R
oadtrips are great, more so when you
own a rugged, go-anywhere vehicle like
the Mitsubishi Triton. 30 Triton owners
recently went on a trip to the Lost World,
the Lost World of Tambun, that is!
Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia hosted the one
day, one night driving excursion from Klang Valley
to the Lost World of Tambun, located within the
limestone hills of Ipoh.
The exciting day started off with registration
and breakfast at Rasta TTDI, before the convoy
was flagged off to Ipoh. Once at the location, the
Triton owners took part in the “Lost World Super
Adventure Race” which provided plenty of thrills
6
and spills. Plenty of fun and laughter,
that’s for sure!
After the tea break, the group set up
tents for the night, before enjoying a
dinner, lucky draw and campfire under
the stars. Judging from the wide smiles
on everyone’s faces, they were already
thinking of the next roadtrip before this
one ended!
To date, the Triton has found over
40,000 owners in Malaysia. It is also
the only pick-up truck in Malaysia to
have an entire range of award winners,
from the Triton Lite to the Triton VGT.

Mitsubishi Mirage driving impressions
WHAT IS IT?
High Speed Demo
Mitsubishi’s global model
designed to meet the
needs of a very wide
spectrum of buyers.
Currently, the model is
built at a new factory in
Thailand, the only one in
the world producing the
Mirage.
The model was conceived with the aim of
meeting Thailand’s ‘EcoCar’ program which provides rebates to buyers
for models that qualify. As
such, it is cheaper than
elsewhere and has drawn
over 55,000 orders since
being launched there in March 2012.
The Mirage is an important model which will
help grow Mitsubishi sales faster in Malaysia and
increase the brand share in the market.
Only one engine spec is available globally
although over time, it is likely that engines with
improved performance may be developed for the
Mirage. One tricky point is that it is a 3-cylinder
unit and with the emphasis on weight-reduction
and compactness, any powerplant that goes into
the engine bay will have to be a compact unit. A
turbocharger might be the only approach.
There are three versions available,
ranging from RM56,980 to RM64,980
(with insurance) and only the cheapest
one has a manual transmission. Those
who want a sporty touch can add
some accessories specially developed
for the Mirage.

Mirage-Convoy
WHAT’S IT LIKE?
I had an opportunity to try the new Mirage last
year just after it was launched in Thailand and at
that time, I had mixed feelings about it. Partly, it
was because the session was somewhat limited
and held at a small race track. It was a nice little
car but its obviously low production cost seemed
evident inside and while being driven.
The Mirage imported to Malaysia is somehow
different from the ones I drove in Thailand. The
materials felt and looked like they were a higher
grade and even the noise levels were lower. When
I asked officials from Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia
(MMM) if export models might have better materials (which is sometimes the case with some
manufacturers), the reply was that they should be
the same as what’s sold in Thailand.
We were not allowed to switch off the airconditioner which was set at 18 degrees °C! So it
could be that the ones I drove last year were early
production units or that they were ‘eco car’ specs
and maybe different. Anyway, whatever it was, the
difference put me in a very positive frame of mind
as we (I was partnered with the editor of Asian
Auto, Daniel Fernandez) departed from Petaling
Jaya, Selangor, for a 200-km drive organized for
the media. Part of the drive, a distance of 135 kms
from PJ to Port Dickson, had us in a competitive
mood as MMM challenged us to get a good fuel
consumption number – at least better than the 21
kms/litre claimed for the car. In the past, such contests have seen participants going to extremes and
turning the cabin into a mobile sauna room with
the air-conditioner kept off and windows tightly
closed. Fantastic numbers have been
achieved but they were certainly not the
sort that the typical motorist would be
able to get as the trade-off for such great
fuel economy was much discomfort.
Nowadays, those who organize such events
MEDIA REVIEW
have found ways to force participants to drive as
normally as possible. In the case of the Mirage
event, air-conditioner controls were made tamperproof and the temperature was set at a rather frigid
18 degrees °C. (the lowest), and the system was
running all the time. We were also given a target
time to cover the distance and this required a brisk
pace at speed limits, so average speeds were
between 80 km/h and 110 km/h. Of course, using
the highway much of the time meant that there
was less jam to waste fuel.
I was in a CVT version with Daniel so the
engine typically ran at low revs, saving
fuel even at higher speeds. Though there
is the belief that a manual transmission is
better for saving fuel, I think a CVT has a
slight advantage. With a manual transmission, you need to shift to the highest gear
as quickly as possible and there will be
some occasions when you may hold a
lower gear longer than necessary, burning a bit more fuel.
It was not difficult meeting the claimed figure and
the average consumption achieved by the 10 cars
taking part was 26.9 kms/litre. That’s pretty impressive and we didn’t even have to sweat it out. In Japan, using the JC-08 test cycle, the Mirage can get
27.2 kms/litre and a comparison with other models
using the same test cycle puts it in hybrid territory
(between the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius).
After the consumption test was done,
we drove along twisty secondary roads
to Melaka and in these conditions, the
compactness of the Mirage was much
appreciated. The handling was fairly failsafe but the car has a rather high centre
of gravity so it tends to roll noticeably.
Like French cars, you don’t feel the roll so
much inside but it seems quite significant
looking from the outside.
MMM also wanted to prove a point that an
economy car like the Mirage can also have a
spirited character so they took us to a go-kart track
where we did a few laps. Here, I found that the CVT
wasn’t good for very hard driving and understandably so since the transmission was intended for
fuel efficiency.
However, Hiroshi Masuoka, the 2-time Dakar
Rally champion, who was with us showed that the
little car can be driven very hard with a manual
transmission. His tyre-smoking taxi rides suggested
that the car can take a lot of punishment too so for
more sane daily driving, it should be very reliable.
The accommodation inside is snug as
you’d expect looking at the exterior dimensions, but the interior designers have
done a great job in packaging. Most Malaysians will find it nice and comfortable
inside with surprising legroom at the rear.
The high ceiling also makes for a spacious
feeling but the cabin is still physically small. And
because of this, the grab handles at the rear had to
be left out. I thought it was a cost-saving measure
but apparently, the grab handles were omitted to
avoid headroom problems.
With the limited size of the cabin, providing
storage space means using little spaces wherever
they can be created. The small recess above the
glovebox is quite useful for a handphone or odds
and ends and if you need to carry long items, the
divided rear backrests can be folded down.
The top version comes with some features which you won’t find in other cars in
the same class. One of these is a button
to start and stop the engine, instead of a
key, and there’s also true keyless entry. It’s
also nice that the power windows can be
operated for 30 seconds after the engine
is shut off.
For those who can’t remember if they have locked
the doors when walking away, the Mirage security
system will automatically lock all the doors 30 sec-
Issue 1 2013
onds after the lock release button is pressed if no
door is opened. However, there is no auto-locking
system when you drive off and I believe this is
because the new regulations do not allow such a
feature for safety reasons.
SHOULD YOU GET ONE?
The big part of the Malaysian market below 1300
cc has been like a closed-off domain reserved only
for the national brands. With special tax privileges,
the national cars have been able to maintain a
big price gap with other brands since 1985. And
anyone who tried to narrow that gap would be given
‘advice’ to review their pricing. In fact, one company
that planned to introduce a small model in 1995 at
around RM70,000 was advised to price it higher –
which was fine by the company as they could make
more money!
These days, as the auto sector finally moves
towards a level playing field for all, the issue of
lower pricing for non-national brands is less sensitive. That MMM has been able to set the price of
the Mirage below RM57,000 is significant. I can’t
imagine this having been possible 10 years ago.
It’s still more expensive than the top versions of
the national brands but consumers being the way
they are, there is a desire to have choices. Some
choices may cost more and some may cost less and
it’s up to each buyer to decide what matters more to
him or her.
I feel that the Mitsubishi brand means
something special to many. It’s a
Japanese brand and that still stands for
quality and reliability, with economical
operation – the attributes which made
Japanese cars dominant. Owning a Mirage would be a practical move but unlike little Japanese cars of the past, this
one doesn’t make you sacrifice comfort
and quality.

i-MiEV goes on
sale in Malaysia
The first zero emissions 100% electric car that
you can own
Mr. Oda presenting a token of appreciation
to Mr. Iwata, i-MiEV’s first user in Malaysia
Y
ou’ve heard about it and marvelled at
its technology, now you can own the
Mitsubishi i-MiEV. Mitsubishi Motors
Malaysia recently launched the i-MiEV
in Malaysia, making it the first zero emissions,
100% electric car to be sold in the country.
The Mitsubishi i-MiEV is based on the gasolinepowered i minicar, but instead of an internal
combustion engine, its sole power source is a
lithium-ion battery pack powering a permanent
magnet electric motor. The 330V battery is located
under the floor deck, while the electric motor is
housed under the luggage compartment.
Producing 49 kW of power and 180 Nm of
instant torque, the i-MiEV has good acceleration
and a top speed of 130 km/h. The four-seater can
travel up to 150 km (measured in the New European
Driving Cycle NEDC) with a full charge of eight hours
at 230 volts.
The i-MiEV comes standard with 2-DIN touch
screen entertainment system with GPS navigation,
solar tint film, auto climate control air con, double
LED headlamps, LED rear combination lamp,
auto light control, electric power steering, leather
wrapped steering wheel and a charging cable with
control box.
Priced at RM136,118.50 and available in
two colours, the i-MiEV comes with a free 5-year
maintenance package and 5-year warranty (or
100,000 km) package which covers labour cost
for periodical vehicle check, air conditioner filter and
brake fluid.

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV goes on sale
World’s first plug-in hybrid SUV displays new innovations
M
itsubishi’s all-new Outlander PHEV, the
world’s first plug-in hybrid SUV, recently
went on sale in Japan.
The Outlander PHEV represents a
fusion of the electric vehicle (EV) tech developed by
Mitsubishi for cars like the i-MiEV, 4WD tech honed
in the Lancer Evolution series, and SUV know-how
gained from the Pajero.
The result is a groundbreaking new model
that brings together the superior environmental
performance and quietness of an EV, the stability
and handling of a 4WD, and the practicality of an
SUV. Best of all worlds, so to speak.
Under the hood lies a 4B11 2.0 litre fourcylinder MIVEC engine with 118 PS and 186
12
Nm of torque. This petrol unit functions solely to
generate electricity in Series Hybrid Mode and is
mainly used to provide motive power in Parallel
Hybrid Mode.
There are two electric motors in the Outlander
PHEV’s Twin Motor 4WD system. Smaller, lighter,
higher output versions of the permanent magnet
synchronous motors used in the i-MiEV are
located front and rear. These have a maximum
output of 60 kW each and maximum torques of
137 Nm (front) and 195 Nm (rear), delivering
high torque from takeoff.
The use of motors and absence of mechanical
connections such as a propeller shaft means
Twin Motor 4WD delivers better response and
finer control than conventional 4WD systems and
reduces friction loss.
Twin Motor 4WD is coupled with MMC’s S-AWC
(Super All Wheel Control) integrated vehicle
dynamics control system, which combines frontand rear-wheel drive control and left and right wheel
brake control to provide consistent handling and
unbeatable stability on the road. Two modes are
offered: Normal Mode for ordinary conditions and
Lock Mode for all-terrain performance.
The drive battery is a high-capacity lithiumion unit. It consists of 80 cells mounted in series
housed in a battery pack enclosed in a secure
frame, and has a total voltage of 300V and total
storage capacity of 12.0 kWh.
news
Issue 1 2013
The Outlander PHEV functions in three drive modes EV Drive Mode, Series Hybrid Mode and Parallel Hybrid
Mode. EV mode is all-electric with zero emissions, and
the cruising range is 60.2 km in Japan’s JC08 mode.
Combined fuel efficiency is 67 km/l.
In Series Hybrid Mode the gasoline engine
operates as a generator supplying electricity to the
motors. The system switches to this mode when
the remaining charge in the battery falls below
a predetermined level and when more powerful
performance is required.
The system switches to Parallel Hybrid Mode
when the vehicle reaches high speeds. In this mode
the high-efficiency gasoline engine provides most of
the motive power, assisted by the electric motors as
required, such as when more powerful performance
is required to accelerate or climb a slope.
Using 200 V AC current, the Outlander PHEV
can be charged in around four hours, while a quick
charging option refills the batteries up to 80% in
approximately 30 minutes.

Mitsubishi brings back
e-Heroes for 2013
Electric vehicle awareness programme kicks off in Terengganu
M
itsubishi Motors Malaysia (MMM) is bringing
back the successful e-Heroes programme, and
this time, the programme kicks off in the east
coast state of Terengganu. MMM, in partnership
with Petrosains, recently launched the programme at
Perbadanan Perpustakaan Awam Terengganu (PPAT).
This one-of-its kind programme, now in its second
year, will see one unit of the i-MiEV (Mitsubishi
innovative Electric Vehicle) made available for children
to test ride over a period of approximately a month at
PPAT.
The Mitsubishi e-Heroes programme aims to promote
Electric Vehicle awareness and eco-friendly practices
towards a greener earth among young Malaysians. Last
year, over 30,000 kids benefited from this meaningful
mission.
Children can also take part in fun and educational
activities such as colouring, origami, photo booth,
interactive displays, mini science shows and workshops
at selected hours. Admission is free.
“One of Mitsubishi’s most advanced creations is the
i-MiEV, a fully electric zero emissions vehicle that makes
14
driving cleaner, safer and more efficient. Mitsubishi
e-Heroes encompass all - Electric, Energy, Environment
and Earth. This is what this programme is essentially
about – offering electric car fun rides to kids to promote
awareness on ways how they can play their part to
create an eco-friendlier future,” said Tetsuya Oda, CEO
of MMM.
“At Mitsubishi Motors, we believe that caring for the
environment is everyone’s responsibility. We believe our
technology and our passion for driving will help us lead
the way to a new future for motoring. We believe by
making driving cleaner and safer, our kids will have the
opportunity to enjoy earth’s many wonders. And that’s
what drives our Drive@earth corporate philosophy,”
added Oda.
After Terengganu, e-Heroes will be visiting various
towns across Malaysia: Kuantan (27 April - 26 May),
Johor (1 June - 30 June), Kota Kinabalu (19 October
– 17 November) and Sarawak (2 December – 30
December).
The Mitsubishi i-MiEV is the first fully electric car on

World debut for two concept models
at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show
M
itsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC)
promoted the Mitsubishi Concept GRHEV and Mitsubishi Concept CA-MiEV
concept models their global debut at the
83rd Geneva International Motor Show from March
5 through March 17 (opening to the general public
on March 7). The two show models highlight
MMC’s next-generation advanced technologies.
The Mitsubishi Concept GR-HEV is a concept
for a sport utility truck (SUT) which delivers high
environmental and driving performance using a
FR 3 diesel-hybrid system (under development)
in a pickup truck, one of the most popular vehicle
categories in emerging economies. Combining
a high fuel-efficiency clean diesel engine with a
high-output motor and battery, the hybrid electric
vehicle (HEV) system achieves on-road CO2
emission levels of below 149 g/km to give it
environmental performance among the best in its
class. The concept also uses a next-generation
4WD system which incorporates the Super Select 4WD honed in the Pajero series and Super
All Wheel Control (S-AWC) vehicle dynamics
integrated control systems to deliver high stability
traction and driving performance under all road
conditions.
The Mitsubishi Concept CA-MiEV gives an
indication of the shape MMC, which launched the
i-MiEV - the world’s first mass produced electric
vehicle - in 2009, believes EVs will take in the
near future. This concept model incorporates
next-generation EV technologies under development at the company, such as high-energy
density batteries and high-efficiency EV systems
(motor, inverter, regenerative braking and wireless
charging system). Together with a lightweight and
aerodynamic body it achieves a cruising range of
300 km.
With its advanced technologies embodied in
the two concept models making their world debut
at the Geneva Motor Show, MMC will continues to
pursue further progress both in emerging markets
and in environmental technologies, two major
keys to the growth of the company’s business.
