Pet of the Week - Zeek
For those of us who know and love Zeek, this is a great
picture that shows his personality very well. He has grown
to be such a favorite among volunteers who just know that
he would make a great companion for a lucky family. His
original owner did tell us that he knew Zeek’s parents and
that Zeek is a Catahoula/lab mix.
Just as he has the beautiful contrast in his color,s he
has a marked contrast in personalities he ‘shows’ to visitors
to the shelter verses the many volunteers he sees weekly.
To those of us he knows, he is a a snuggle pup who will
get up from his bed at the back of his kennel to come
forward and push against the kennel front with his back
and side so we can reach in and rub his back. Or he will
lean against whoever is leading him (or whoever they stop
to visit with) as if to say “hey, I am here - pet me”. He is the sweetie who always tries to convince the
dog-walker on the other end of his leash to let him come over to anyone he knows sitting in the lobby
area when they pass through so he can put his front legs on their lap for a nuzzle. We see him as being
sometimes silly when he gets excited and running little “zoomies” and figure 8’s.
Unfortunately, visitors do not see that side of him because he is sure to bark (watch dog style) at anyone he does not know when they come to the front of his kennel. If only those people could see how
he acts with his “regulars” when there are no visitors around they would see him entirely differently. He
would make such a wonderfully loving family dog for a family that does not have other dogs. He does
not pass out the same love that he has for people to other dogs and can be aggressive to them, at
least in the shelter atmosphere. He is a strong dog and we do not take chances with other dogs with
him for that reason.

May is Military Appreciation Month
May is the designated month to celebrate Military Appreciation. When we think about the month of May and
holidays associated with that month, we think “Memorial
Day.”
But did you know that there was a whole month filled
with different designated holidays to celebrate a wide variety of government workers and military members? Trust
me, I’m just as surprised as most of you!
May 1: Loyalty Day
Loyalty Day is as simple as it sounds: a day set aside
for U.S. citizens to reaffirm their loyalty to their country
and to remember their heritage. It was started in 1921 and
a few communities still celebrate with parades and other
ceremonies. It is a legal holiday, but not federal in nature.
May 1-8: Public Service Recognition Week
Traditionally celebrated during the first full week of
May, Public Service Recognition Week honors the individuals who serve as federal, state, country, and local government employees. It is not commonly celebrated, but it is
sometimes used to educate the public about the contribution of government workers.
May 8: Victory in Europe Day
The unconditional surrender of Germany in World War
II came on May 8, 1945. Sweeping celebrations seized Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, and New York City.
May 6: Military Spouse Appreciation Day

May 15: Armed Forces Day
Celebrated on the third Saturday of every May, Armed
Forces Day honors Americans serving in the military. It
was originally designed to replace the days celebrating
each individual service, but those days are still observed.
The longest running celebration sponsored by a city is held
in Bremerton, Washington. 2016 marked its 68th celebration with a parade.
May 30: Memorial Day
Landing on the final Monday of May, Memorial Day is
the most widely recognized holiday out of the May militarythemed observances. It began after the Civil War to remember the soldiers who fell on both sides during the war,
but grew to commemorate all Americans who died serving
in the military.
