WELCOME
It is a great pleasure to welcome you to the second annual USA Ultimate Beach
Championships in Virginia Beach. USA Ultimate encompasses everything that is good
about athletic competition. It exemplifies the core values of sportsmanship, respect,
integrity, cooperation and self-discipline.
Our community partners, Virginia Beach Jaycees and George Alcaraz with Resort
Management LLC, have been working diligently to create an enjoyable experience for you
while you are in beautiful Virginia Beach.
To all the athletes competing – the City of Virginia Beach wishes you success in
displaying your abilities to the fullest. The sportsmanship, fair play and respect you
demonstrate are major reason for the popularity of your sport.
When you are done competing, please get out and enjoy some of the best of what
Virginia Beach has to offer. From award-winning coastal cuisine and family friendly
attractions to shopping and relaxing in the sand, Virginia Beach has something for
everyone.
Please accept my best wishes for a great event!

ULTIMATE IN
10 SIMPLE RULES
1. THE FIELD: A rectangular shape with end zones at each end. A regulation field is 70
yards by 40 yards, with end zones 25 yards deep.
2. INITIATE PLAY: Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their
respective end zone line. The defense throws (“pulls”) the disc to the offense. A regulation
game has seven players per team.
3. SCORING: Each time the offense completes a pass in the defense’s end zone, the
offense scores a point. Play is initiated after each score.
SPECTATOR INFO
4. MOVEMENT OF THE DISC: The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a
pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc. The person with the disc (“thrower”)
has ten seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the thrower (“marker”) counts
out the stall count.
5. CHANGE OF POSSESSION: When a pass in not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop,
block, interception), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes
the offense.
6. SUBSTITUTIONS: Players not in the game may replace players in the game after a score
and during an injury timeout.
7. NON-CONTACT: No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are
also prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made.
8. FOULS: When a player initiates contact on another player a foul occurs. When a foul
disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession was retained. If the player
committing the foul disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone.
9. SELF-OFFICIATING: Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players
resolve their own disputes.
10. SPIRIT OF THE GAME: Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive
play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the
rules, and the basic joy of play.

Our team has been together for two years. We first
created it last year to play in the very first Beach
Championships, and we haven’t played in any other tournaments together. Most of us have played
together in college at Eastern Michigan University
or against each other as we are all from Michigan.
We have some new additions this year due to some players from last
year playing on other teams or not being able to make it this year.
We are all very excited and looking forward to competing this year.

How does any pod of whales form? Through family,
friendship, shrimp or plankton plumes, and a need
for survival, but mostly through nature’s sirens’
song we gathered. Bubbling from the depths of a
white whale’s ambergris, known commonly as Virginia’s premier open team, Floodwall, we decided
to once again defend our home state at USA Ultimate’s Beach Championships. The team is hoping our 2015 Capital
Sectionals Championship, top 25 USA Ultimate ranking and stellar beach whale bods translate into success again this year. Since
beaches love whales, The Whale is excited about the opportunity to
compete once again with great teams from across the country and to
spread an appreciation for the sea’s oh-so-gentle giants.

@MidRiftUltimate
The Midcontinent Rift System (MidRift) is a geological rift in the center of the North American continent. Some say the center of the universe. Some
aren’t as opinionated as we are. It formed when
the continent’s core began to split apart about 1.1
billion years ago. Unknown to the coastal areas of our continent, it is
a lot of pressure to be the core of a continent, providing for your outer
compatriots like a heart to a useless limb. The rift failed, however.
The core was too strong. The failed rift left behind thick layers of
exposed rock like scars from a booboo. The failed rift serves as a
constant reminder of the burden coastal areas have on our nation’s
core. The constant pulling. The whining. We reenact that battle each
year in Virginia Beach: the attempt from the coasts to destroy the
core and, of course, their inevitable failure.

Weekend With Bernie is a Brooklyn-based beach
team largely comprised of members of the New
York men’s team Youngbloods. After stints in both
the House and the Senate, we’ve decided to take
our talents to the big time: Beach Nationals. Will
we win? Not if the superdelegates have anything to
say about it. But will the people love us? You bet.

SPECTATOR INFO
Yetis on the Beach are best known for guarding the
expansive Michigan coastline from the threat of our
nefarious neighbors, but few historians know that
they protect the Ohio shores as well. These creatures
of mythical proportions enjoy long walks on the beach,
expansive piano solos, serene sunsets and philosophical conversations that last deep into the night. BUT, don’t be fooled
by his cultured insights, unrelenting charm and dashing good looks.
This creature comes to play. If you are fortunate enough to see a Yeti
up close, don’t forget to snap a picture. For years, they eluded the paparazzi and only recently have embraced the pictorial age. Be one of
the first to catch these creatures in their natural habitat, on the beach!
ROSTER
ROSTER
This particular group of Yetis have competed together and against
each other in the club division on High Five and Madcow for several
years. Now, thanks to the Treaty of Versailles (Ohio, not France), they
have joined forces to compete at the national level and share their
mystical combination of competitiveness and fun. If you see one on
the beach, just remember that it’s good luck to pet a Yeti.

@BaltimoreFC
Baltimore Flatball Club is excited to return to
USAU’s second Beach Nationals after their championship-winning performance in the spirit award
division. We recognize that there is serious competition for this year’s spirit award but have been
training all off-season with the intent to retain our
title. We are confident that no one can match the accuracy of our
calls, our commitment to fair self-officiation, the generosity of our
praise for opponents or the forthright honesty of our post-game spirit

papered, you will need more than a fire extinguisher to stop us!

SPECTATOR INFO
With a core of Cincinnati Steamboat’s club mixed
players at the helm, Beachboat is excited to make
its return to the shores of the Atlantic. Steamboat
was formed in 2008 and is the Great Lakes Region’s longest-running mixed program. Over the
years, shipmates have travelled extensively to play
grass tournaments around the U.S., but in 2011, eager to test out
our sea legs, we navigated uncharted waters as Battello a Vapore to
the harbors of Paganello and docked there again in 2012. Now, with
some new crew on board, we’re hoisting anchor and setting course
to Virginia Beach to compete again together on American sand after
our debut at the Beach Championships in 2015.

BELIEVELAND
CLEVELAND, OH
Captain: Sharon Yee
The drive. The fumble. The decision. Always coming up short on the big stage, Cleveland sports
fans keep coming back for more with perhaps a
masochistic devotion. It’s time to vindicate that
loyalty and further expose the city to ultimate by
competing among the greats. Believeland is making its debut this
year comprised of elite club players from northeast Ohio and surrounding areas. The team began on Lake Erie’s shores among a mix
of friends old and new sharing a love for beach ultimate. Based out
of Cleveland, our players are highly involved with the local ultimate
community and hope to expand programs this summer to include
organized beach leagues. A unique opportunity to gain recognition
throughout the city, and with pride on the line (not to mention 50
years since the last championship), we’re looking to bring a national
title home, like the rest of Cleveland’s sports teams.

Erie Brig is a team of friends who have been playing
around the Erie area together for many years. Most of
us have traveled together to various tournaments such
as Wildwood, Mars and Ocean City, and we host our
own annual beach tournament: Don’t Give Up the Disc.
We are participating at Beach Nationals to help bring
awareness of the sport to the Erie area, along with creating a beach-specific club team.

CHARLESTON, WV
Captain: Brandon Hudnall

Fuster hails mostly from the mountain state of West Virginia with a
few of our teammates coming from as far away as North Carolina. We
are a quasi-competitive flock who got together for Poultry Days three
years ago and have never looked back. We are best represented by our
mascot, the fighting chicken. I know a chicken seems harmless, but
have you ever been pecked by one? They can leave a mark, and the
wound could potentially get infected. Also, roosters are loud as all
get out, especially in the morning. That crowing, when unexpected,
can be quite intimidating. Anyway, our team goes to beach and grass
tournaments throughout the year in search of competitive ultimate
with an emphasis on top-notch sportsmanship. We will bring our signature Appalachian avian spirit in 2016 to Beach Nationals in (East)
Virginia. Beware the chickens of the sea! Kah ka kah!

HOUSTON, TX
Captains: Sean McCall, Katey Forth
No Tsu Oh originated in 2000 as a reunion team of the Houston
Houndz and Doublewide to attend Paganello in Italy. The team won
the World Beach Ultimate Cup five times on the Rimini beach before
retiring the name in 2008. Since then, a core team has been playing
offseason tourneys together in the mixed division to set the stage for
NTO’s return to the sand, this time in the mixed division and with the
power of Showdown’s finest. No Tsu Oh has initiated beach league
games in Galveston and locally in Houston on sand volleyball courts.

Another brisk November sun sets over the Schuylkill
as Betsy Ross lights a few lonely candles. She
sighs, holding the flag – the project General Washington commissioned her. Unbeknownst to her, she
is holding what will be the symbol of freedom and
independence for hundreds of years to come, but it
feels like a heavy burden now.

Suddenly, a disc-shaped object comes crashing through the window,
knocking over the candles she had lovingly lit. The flames catch onto
her skirt, then onto the flag, and soon the entire room is ablaze. A
beautiful crimson filly bursts through her flame-compromised door,
bucking through her parlor and throwing Betsy out into the cold, but
away from danger. The mare grabs the American flag in its teeth and
takes off through the flames, traversing time and space. It is with
this passion and fervor that the ladies of Filly LAMP come together
to compete.

represent the #nocoast Midwest. We are some of
the few pale Midwesterners brave enough to compete in such a sunny, sandy competition. While we
do not train in the sand, the snow, mud and rain
conditions we train in prepare us for battling on any terrain. We will
be equipped with our Midwestern tenacity, plenty of sunscreen and a
great love of the game when we show up to compete in Virginia. Virginia is for lovers, and we love sandwiches and competitive ultimate!

CHARGE!
ROSTER
ROSTER
JENNIEVILLE, MD
Captains: Rod Hannon, Trish Hannon
CHARGE! was formed 14 years ago to give a core
group of long-standing coed teammates a reason
to play in the sand in the summer. It was a welcome chance to take off our cleats, soak up some
sun and enjoy competitive disc in a new way. Since
forming, we have competed each year in Wildwood,
N.J., living on boardwalk pizza, dodging TRAM cars
and soothing sunburns in the ocean. In fact, several players on the
squad now ONLY appear on the horizon when beach ultimate is on
the menu, preferring to never layout on turf again. Our roster has
changed somewhat over the years, but the core members and spirit
of CHARGE! still remain strong. Carefully crafted, like your favorite
cocktail, Charge! is assembled each year with equal parts of talent and friendship. We pride ourselves on high-spirited, competitive
play, happily heckling our own players as a means of team discipline.
We encourage this spirit of play in our opponents as well, ending
each game with a ceremony that recognizes the standout players on
the opposing squad.
DANGER BAY
TORONTO, ON
A group of beach ultimate enthusiasts more familiar with white snows than white sands, Danger
Bay is making its first appearance at USAU Beach
Nationals. Our team name pays homage to a Canadian TV series broadcast on CBC Television and
The Disney Channel starting October 7, 1984. The
series was perceived as wholesome, exciting fare
for older children and adolescents and continued to be seen through
the 1990s in many countries worldwide [wikipedia.org/wiki/Danger_Bay]. Our team strives to be just as wholesome, just as exciting,
and to hopefully channel as much of our inner adolescence as our
masters legs can handle.

A mishmash of veterans, coming together to remember and hopefully relive their glory days.
We’ve played together and against each other at
lawn and sand tournaments over the years, all over
the country.
IOWA CITY, IA
Captain: Dan Kresowik
Coaches: Matt Peterson, Mark Kresowik
In 2004, CLX, an Iowa State University-centric team, finished second
in the most legitimate division of UPA Nationals. A group of University of Iowa students decided that if the CLX chumps, to whom they
had never lost, could finish second, we could easily form our own
team in 2005 to skip school, imbibe on the beach and finish 10th.
In 2015, Over The Hill finished second in the most legitimate division of USAU Beach Nationals. If the Over The Hill chumps can finish second, we can certainly skip out on our families, sleep on the
beach and finish 10th. Matthew Peterson, at a tournament in 2005,
remarked “I am so gruntled right now.” The internets define gruntled
as “pleased, satisfied and contented,” or “to put in a good humor.”
It is safe to say that after (mostly) long ultimate careers, we are all
truly gruntled right now.

Overrated brings together a core of (current and

Aging gracefully into the mixed masters division,
the team competes at local and national beach
tournaments and expands as needed for local club
tournaments. Beach Nationals #1 was a highlight
of our tournament year, and we’re excited to continue the tradition of
intense, good-spirited play and celebration.

The Swamp Rats climbed out of the grimy depths
of the Great Dismal Swamp for the first time last
season to make a new habitat in the Virginia
Beach sand. Many of us had competed together on
club teams in North Carolina (LCN, Ring, Phoenix,
Retro, Backhoe, Boneyard) and played coed together in the offseason (Hate, Inc.). We were excited to scrap and claw our
way to the title last year. We return this year, hungry again, and we’ve
gotten even more dismal, adding three new females to our rat pack.

SPECTATOR INFO
Shostakovich (and the Angry Buddha) is delighted to be returning to the second-ever USAU Beach
Nationals as well as the second-ever USAU mixed
masters competition. Originally founded nearly
a decade ago to fulfill Taylor Richey’s dream of
winning the Ow, My Knee tournament in Albany
(goal yet to be accomplished – perhaps at the
32nd annual this summer), Shostakovich draws players from a
wide spectrum of club teams. Our unifying (if sometimes tenuous)
connection is to pick-up in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, a game dating
back to the early 1990s that fosters competition from high school
through great grand masters ages. While our Angry Buddha has
retired (at least for now), we look forward to channeling his admirable blend of intense competitiveness and embodiment of Spirit of
the Game in Virginia Beach.

Ye Olde Boxcar is, at its core, a group of people who
all have played mixed off and on together for several years. Since several of us all reached masters
eligibility together, so we figured, let’s keep this up
and play on the beach. To this mix we added old
college buddies, new tournament friends, some
sand volleyball players (they should be good on the beach, right?)
and some random guy we met on the streets (maybe). We’re here to
play well, have fun and make some new friends along the way.

BORDERLINE
ORONO, ME
Captains: Daniel McConville, Donnie McPhee
@BorderlineUlty
Borderline is a men’s masters and grand masters
club team from the Atlantic Region (Ultimate
Canada)/Northeast Region (USA Ultimate) that
was conceived in 2011 by a collection of Canadian Maritime and Maine players. The original core
group played on various men’s and mixed teams
and developed friendships over the decades from competing against
one another. Initially, Borderline competed as a men’s masters team.
We competed in the USAU club series in 2011-2013, earning a bid to
U.S. Nationals in 2013. In 2014 and 2015, we focused on the Canadian Ultimate Championship, winning Canadian Nationals in 2014.
The team grew rapidly as new players came of age, and in 2016, we
formed a grand masters team. The U.S. Beach Championships is our
first foray into the GM division.

SPECTATOR INFO
Is the heyday for pirates in the Carolinas really past? While some of our straw hat buccaneers
may look like they rolled out of the 1700s, you’re
squiffy if you think our bones are brittle. The thirst
for plunder remains, and we defend our gold with
gusto. The salty seadogs of Alchemy have weighed
anchor, so prepare for a flogging. No quarter will be
given. We plan to leave the beach strewn with shark bait.

GRAVE ERROR
CHAPEL HILL, NC
Captain: Jacob Bonenberger
Grave Error is the result of all the other team’s
bad personnel decisions. We are the fodder, the
chaff, the slivers of greatness you left on the cutting room floor while forming your perfect rosters.
These forgotten souls have gathered together with
one goal in mind – to seek redemption by burying
the competition in this sandy graveyard. The signs will be subtle.
When it feels like a hand is reaching out of the sand as you slip and
faceplant, know that it is our hand. When the wind pops that disc up
into your face instead of your fingers, know that it is our collective
breath. And when a hand pats you on the back in that particularly
sunburnt spot, well that will be us too, congratulating you on a great
game and reminding you of your Grave Error.

This landlocked team might sink in the sand. We’ll
have to adjust our rockets accordingly.

SANDBLAST

ROSTER
CHICAGO, IL
Captains: Johnny Hock, Gary LeDonne
Sandblast is essentially a melting pot of former
teammates and foes from Illinois, Indiana, Ohio
and Michigan. Players on our team competed together in college at the University of Illinois and
in the masters division as REAL Huck. The sands
of time have passed, but we have reformed and are reaching back
to compete again as Sandblast. Sandblasting is “the operation of
forcibly propelling a stream of abrasive material against a surface
under high pressure to smooth a rough surface.” Some of our players
are abrasive material, some are a stream of high pressure, and some
have just been worn down.

Scrapple - Scraps of meat left over from butchering, not used or sold elsewhere, were made into
scrapple to avoid waste. Scrapple is best known
as a rural American food of the Mid-Atlantic states
(Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania
and Virginia). Scrapple and panhaas are commonly considered an
ethnic food of the Pennsylvania Dutch, including the Mennonites and
Amish. Scrapple is found in supermarkets throughout the region in
both fresh and frozen refrigerated cases.
This definition also describes a grand master’s ultimate team from
the Mid-Atlantic states.

SPIRIT OF THE GAME
Ultimate has traditionally relied upon the spirit of sportsmanship, which places the
responsibility for fair play on the player. Highly competitive play is encouraged, but never
at the expense of mutual respect among competitors, adherence to the agreed upon rules
of the game, or the basic joy of play. — 11th Edition USA Ultimate Rules of Ultimate.
10 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
ABOUT SPIRIT OF THE GAME™
1. THE GOLDEN RULE: TREAT OTHERS AS YOU WOULD WANT TO BE TREATED.
Spirited games result from mutual respect among opponents. Assume the best of your
opponent. Give him or her the benefit of a doubt. You would want the same for yourself.
But if you are thick-skinned, do not assume that your opponent is. Maybe you should
think of this rule as, “treat others as you would have them treat your mother.”
2. CONTROL: SOTG TAKES REAL EFFORT.
SOTG is not just some abstract principle that everyone adopts and then games run
smoothly without effort. Close calls are made in tight games. Hard fouls are committed.
SOTG is about how you handle yourself under pressure: how you contain your emotionality,
tame your temper, and modulate your voice. If you initiate or contribute to the unraveling
of spirit, the concept falls apart quickly. If you act to mend things (or at least not
exacerbate the situation) by following (1) above, the game heals itself.
3. HECKLING AND TAUNTING ARE DIFFERENT.
PLAYER INFO
Ultimate has a long tradition of good-natured heckling. Heckles are friendly barbs,
typically from non-playing spectators. Heckling can be fun, but taunting is unspirited and
wrong. Harassing remarks after an opponent’s foul call or close play are NOT heckling:
they are abusive taunts which create unpleasant playing conditions and often escalate to
acrimonious disputes.
4. SOTG IS COMPATIBLE WITH CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY.
It is a fallacy to argue that the stakes are so important that some aspect of SOTG can be
cast aside. Time and again, great teams and star players have shown that you can bring
all your competitive and athletic zeal to a game without sacrificing fair play or respect
for your opponent.
5. DON’T “GIVE AS YOU GOT.”
There is no “eye for an eye.” If you are wronged, you have no right to wrong someone in
return. In the extreme case where you were severely mistreated, you may bring the issue
up with a captain, tournament director, or even lodge a complaint with the governing
body. If you retaliate in kind, however, a complaint may be filed against you. We recall
point (1): treat others as you would have them treat you, not as they have treated you. In
the end, you are responsible for you.

6. BREATHE.
After a hard foul, close call, or disputed play, take a step back, pause, and take a deep
breath. In the heat of competition, emotions run high. By giving yourself just a bit of
time and space, you will gain enough perspective to compose yourself and concentrate on
the facts involved in the dispute (was she in or out; did you hit his hand or the disc; did
that pick affect the play). Your restraint will induce a more restrained response from your
opponent. Conflagration averted, you may resume business as usual.
7. WHEN YOU DO THE RIGHT THING, PEOPLE NOTICE.
When you turn the other cheek, you know you’ve done the right thing. You may not hear
praise, there may be no standing ovation, but people do notice. Eventually, their respect
for you and their appreciation of the game will grow.
8. BE GENEROUS WITH PRAISE.
Compliment an opponent on his/her good catch. Remark to a teammate that you admire
their honesty in calling themselves out of bounds. Look players in the eye and congratulate
them when you shake their hands after a game. These small acts boost spirit greatly, a
large payoff for little time and effort.
9. IMPRESSIONS LINGER.
Not only does the realization that your actions will be remembered for a long time serve
to curb poor behavior, it can also inspire better conduct. Many old-timers enjoy the
experience of meeting an elite player who remembers their first rendezvous on the field
and recalls the event in detail. A good first encounter with an impressionable young player
can have considerable long term positive impact.
10. HAVE FUN.
All other things being equal, games are far more fun without the antipathy. Go hard. Play
fair. Have fun.

SPIRIT CIRCLES
Spirit circles are an idea borrowed from international competitions throughout the
ultimate world. For years, American teams have traveled to world championship events
where they have not only done exceptionally well in each competition, but showed the
international community the importance we place on respect for the game and their
opponents. But American players have also learned a lot from competing against teams
from other countries, and invariably one of the most positive parts of the international
experience has been the tradition of the post-game spirit circles. While there are a number
of ways to do this, here are some quick tips to get your team started:
-F
ollowing each game, rather than lining up to slap hands, the two teams gather into a
circle, alternating players on each team, facing inward, with arms around the shoulders
of the person next to you.
-O
ne or two people (often team captains) on each team will talk briefly about the game.
Usually the losing team goes first, then the winning team.
-T
hings to talk about can include how the game went, how your own team played, what
the other team did well, who on the other team played well and anything else that might
be worth communicating, even if it’s something you think could be done better (and
don’t forget to look in the mirror on this).
-A
fter each team has had a chance to talk, the winning team takes a step into the circle
and walks around counter-clockwise to slap hands with the players on the other team.

PLAYER INFO
That’s it! It’s pretty simple and definitely something that brings teams together and puts
the game and the experience in perspective. It’s all about respect for each other and the
experience of bringing out the best in each other through competition. It’s also about
building relationships and seeing opponents for what they really are: part of the same
community that loves ultimate. Please note that this is not required and is not meant to
replace other post-game traditions you may have (e.g., cheers, games, photos, gifts or
trading gear). Good luck, and please let USA Ultimate staff and other event organizers
how it goes!

HEALTH AND SAFETY
Medical staff, including athletic trainers, will be on site at Tournament Central to treat injuries,
handle emergencies and provide some preventative care. The event will provide standard athletic
tape, pre-wrap, ice and some bandages. Other supplies, including special tape or bandages and
anti-inflammatory drugs, must be provided by teams or may be charged by the training staff.
If there is an injury on a field that needs medical attention, inform a field marshal, and he or
she will radio to the trainers.
If you have medical issues that require attention in the morning before play, please show up
early to avoid long lines. The trainers will be at the fields two hours prior to game time each day.
Directions to the local hospital can be found in prior pages of this program.
CONCUSSIONS
EDUCATION
•U
SA Ultimate recommends the CDC “Heads Up Safety” program, a free one-hour online
training: cdc.gov/concussion/headsup/youth.html.
•U
SA Ultimate’s participant waiver includes important information from the CDC regarding
concussion safety: usaultimate.org/membership/usa_ultimate_membership_forms.aspx
COACHING REQUIREMENTS
•C
oaches at USA Ultimate events are required to have completed a concussion awareness and
safety recognition program (like the CDC program above or other local or state-recommended
course).Coaches should not submit records of course completion to USA Ultimate, but should
maintain records on-site while coaching.
REMOVAL & RETURN TO PLAY
•A
ll guidelines identified by the CDC must be strictly followed in the event of a suspected
concussion.
1. Remove athlete from play.
2. Ensure athlete is evaluated by a health care professional trained in concussion diagnosis
and management.
Do not try to judge the seriousness of the injury yourself.
3. If a minor, inform athlete’s parents or guardians about the known or possible concussion
and give them the fact sheet on concussion.
4. Allow athlete to return to play only with permission from an appropriate health care
professional.
DOCTOR’S NOTE REQUIREMENT
• If, during a USA Ultimate event, an athlete receives care at a hospital, medical clinic or
doctor’s office, or is referred to a hospital or doctor by event medical staff, the athlete is barred
from further competition in that event until he or she provides a doctor’s note, on letterhead
or prescription pad, to event medical staff stating that the athlete is authorized to return to
competition.
HEAT, NUTRITION AND HYDRATION
•H
eat-related illness occurs when body cooling by evaporation is limited. Sweating depletes
the body’s salt and moisture, which leads to dehydration. If a player recognizes any signs or
symptoms of heat-related illness, he or she should treat the problem immediately.
•S
igns and symptoms of heat illness can include changes in level of consciousness, abdominal
cramps, nausea/vomiting, fatigue/tingling, chills, inability to spit, dry mucous membranes,
decreased output and change in color of urine.

PREVENTION AND TREATMENT OF HEAT ILLNESS
• Avoid alcohol, caffeine and carbonated beverages.
•M
edications such as antihistamines, decongestants, certain asthma medications and
diuretics can increase risk for heat illness. Avoid them if possible.
•A
void certain nutritional supplements (such as caffeine and ephedrine) that can
dehydrate the body and/or increase metabolism and heat production.
• Know your body – be honest! Are you fit enough to perform under current conditions?
•E
at and drink (water AND sports drinks) optimally before, during and after play.
Potassium is important; good sources include sports drinks, yogurt, grapefruit juice,
bananas and oranges. Sodium is also important; good sources include sports drinks,
vegetable juices, pretzels, nuts, cheese and crackers. After play, carbohydrates are
important: foods such as potatoes, honey, cereal, white bread, corn chips, sports
drinks, jelly beans, rice cakes, bagels, crackers and gummy candies.
•D
on’t drink too much. Over-hydrating can be dangerous if it leads to a fluid and
electrolyte imbalance.
• Monitor your urine. Clear/copious = hydrated. Dark = Need water/electrolytes.
•B
e sensitive to prior illness. If you’ve been sick, your body may be more susceptible
to dehydration.
• Rest and cool down after play. Find shade, wet the skin, get in front of a fan or breeze.
SIDELINE SAFETY
•S
pectators and equipment must stay at least three yards away from the sidelines.
Where there are buffer lines, respect them. Chairs, coolers, strollers, you, etc., must
be at least three yards from the sidelines.
• If a player believes that an object on the sideline is not safe, he or she should inform
event staff and refrain from playing until he or she is satisfied that safe conditions have
been established.
PLAYER INFO
•U
SA Ultimate and event staff reserve the right to move or remove objects or spectators
from on or near the playing field if those conditions are, in the opinion of USA Ultimate
or event staff, unsafe for players, staff or spectators.
LIGHTNING GUIDELINES
•E
vent staff will communicate with players and spectators via PA system and through
field marshals equipped with radios if there is lightning danger. Play then will be
stopped, and everyone should seek shelter.
•S
afe shelter for players and spectators at the field site includes any fully enclosed
building or vehicle with a hard top and closed windows.
•E
vent staff will use the “flash-to-bang” method to determine when to send people to
shelter. By the time the flash-to-bang count has reached 30 seconds, all individuals
should be in a safe shelter location.
• If you can’t get to a safe shelter, try to avoid being the tallest object in an open field
or on open water. Avoid other tall objects, metal objects and water. Assume a crouched
position with only the balls of your feet touching the ground, your arms wrapped around
your knees and your head lowered. Minimize contact with the ground. Do not lie flat.
•A
void using telephone land lines. Cell phones are safe, provided the person has followed
other safety guidelines.
•E
vent staff will indicate to players when play is going to resume. Team captains should
meet at Tournament Central to receive instructions for resuming play and any schedule
modifications.
