ABOUT THE INSTITUTE
The Institute of Oncology "Prof. Dr. Ion
Chiricuta" (IOCN) was firstly established in 1929 by Prof.
Dr. Iuliu Moldovan, under the name of “The Institute for
Research and Prevention of Cancer”. It is one of the first
cancer centers in Europe. Starting with 1965, the Institute
goes over a modernization period, initiated by Prof.Dr.
Ion Chiricuta. This is the reason why, ever since
10.08.1990, it will bear the name of The Institute of
Oncology "Prof. Dr. Ion Chiricuta" Cluj-Napoca.
The Institute of Oncology is a comprehensive
cancer center of national public interest, with juridical
personality, subordinate to the Ministry of Public Health.
Mission
The mission of the Oncology Institute is to contribute to the
diminution of cancer's effects in Romania, through
programs that integrate attendance, prevention, research
and continuous education of all the professionals involved,
and of course of the public.

Our vision is to be the first oncology center nationally and
regionally, founded on the extraordinary quality of our
members, on the attendance at excellent standards of our
patients, on research and education.

The Institute offers preventive, curative and
palliative medical services in the oncologic domain, as well
as research and learning opportunities. The Institute is also a
provider of continuous medical education activities (CME).
MILESTONES
1929 – “Institute for Research and Prevention of Cancer”
1955 – Hospital-based Cancer Registry
1958 – Prof. Ion Chiricuta is appointed director of the Institute
1964 – The old Institute is moving in the “new building”
1974 – Population-based Cluj County Cancer Registry
1974-1987 – Dr. Gh. Bolba – published statistical data – vol IV, V, VI “Cancer
incidence in five continents”
2000 – Start of the cervical cancer screening programme
2003 – Cluj Cancer Registry rejoins IACR and ENCR
2007 – October: The Institute becomes full member of OECI- Organization of European
Cancer Institutes
2008 – ISO Certificate 9001/2000 - Quality Management Systems
2008 – Foundation of the Regional Cancer Registry N-W (6 counties, 3 million people),
by MoH Order 2027/2007 – “Cancer Registration and foundation of 8 Regional
Cancer Registries”
2009 – ISO Certificate 14001/2004 Enviromental Management Systems
2009 – OHSAS Certificate 18001/2007 Occupational Health and Safety

RESEARCH
The mission of the Scientific Research Department is to plan,
design and put into practice strategies that will keep performance
of the scientific research in the Institute at high standards.
The main objectives of the Scientific Research Department are:
- promoting excellence in research;
- orienting the research in the Institute towards the long-term necessities of the medical specialties involved in cancer treatment
and towards the general necessities of our society.

- consolidating international cooperation
- educational: attracting young researchers and training them to
be competitive
