Commandant Carlos Poole
Good Day, Marines
As you read this, We will have completed our Memorial Day parades and several Eagle Scout
Courts. That's right, I said parades in the plural sense. So not only did we have a strong showing
in our annual march in Saddle River, but thanks to Ed Ebel, a possibly new tradition down in
Saddle Brook. With Jeeps all decked out, 12 Marines ( and Mrs. Ebel in tow) made our presence
known in the sleepy little hamlet. Apparently, we were the biggest hit as evidenced by the crowd
reaction as we rolled through the parade route.
PC Daudelin and SVC Paul did us proud representing us in the various Eagle Scout ceremonies,
in both Bergen and Passaic counties. Keep up the good work, gentlemen.
This is June, so let us not forget the Department convention down the shore. If anyone is interested in going down and joining our delegation, please contact any member of the Executive
Board for info on directions and lodging (special rates through the Marine Corps League). But
hurry, spaces are limited. Our own PC Daudelin is in fact running for Dept. Judge Advocate, and
in order to vote you must be present at the convention. Let's rally behind him and see what we
can do, after all, every vote counts.

Who Doesn’t Love a Parade
SRD Takes Part in Parades Honoring the Fallen on Memorial Day
Three Jeeps motored down the parade route in Saddle Brook during it’s
annual Memorial Day Parade carrying Old Glory and the Colors of the
States Marine Corps! This highly motivated motorcade was
Saddle Brook United
manned by the Warriors of the Saddle River Marines! Waving to the
crowd and spreading the message of the Corps and League to all in attendance. The Marines were
led by our Commandant Carlos Poole. Vehicles provided by Sgt at Arms Ed Ebel, Marine Dennis
Vera and Associate Member Ed Ebel transported Marines Albert Paul, Vince Montagna, Michael
Apricena and Pat Espina in the parade.
The crowd loved our Devil Dogs and were even treated to a well orchestrated demonstration of
military honors. The SRD Marines stopped their convoy twice, once before the VFW of Saddle
Brook then at the parade reviewing stand. At each stop SRD Marines dismounted their vehicles
formed up and rendered honors to the surprised and delighted onlookers. They would then quicky
remount and continue on the parade route.
A great day and outstanding job done by our Marines representing us in our first Saddle Brook
Parade. Following the parade they enjoyed the company of fellow veterans coming together to
honor the best of us, those who fell in defense of this great nation! Outstanding Marines you
made us all proud to be members of the SRD!

Saddle River
The following day, on Memorial Day the Detachment took part in the
Saddle River Memorial Day Parade. SRD has taken part in the town’s annual event every year
since we formed. The day began with our Marines leading the parade from Police HQ to the
Borough Hall. Marines Lou Fava, Michael Apricena, Pat Espina, Bobby Re and Ed Ebel
represented SRD with honor and professionalism. Once at the Hall the Leathernecks presented
the Colors. As is tradition the Marines then delivered an 18 gun salute to honor the fallen
warriors of Saddle River. Throughout our Marines enjoyed the grandeur of the day spending
time with fellow veterans, public servants and the citizens of the community that our
Detachment bears the name of.
An outstanding day of events honoring the heroes of our past, present and
future. Its what being a Marine Leaguer is all about, honoring our past and
educating the public about the legacy of our beloved Corps and League!

WWI Heroes To Receive the Medal of Honor
On 2 June 2015, The President will award the Medal of
Honor to two US Army Soldiers of WWI. These men
originally awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. They
will have their awards upgraded following a two decade long
review of US Army awards from WWI-Vietnam. It was
undertaken to recognize American heroes who may have been
denied honors due to race, heritage or religion. Many such
upgrades have taken place during the past three
administrations to right the past. Asian, Hispanic, African
American and Jewish war heroes have now been given their
rightful places in American History due to this historic
review.
The two newest recipients are Sgt Henry Johnson, a
member of the 369th Regiment, 93rd Infantry Division, the
famed Harlem Hell Fighters for heroic action which included
hand to hand combat against the Germans. Johnson’s son
Major Hermann Johnson, was a member of the Tuskegee
Airmen. Valor was just in the Johnson blood!
The second is Bayonne native Sgt William Shemin, a
Jewish war veteran, was a member of the 47th Infantry, 4th
Infantry Division. Shemin braved hellacious machine gun fire
to save wounded comrades with total disregard for his own
safety. Both of these extraordinary men are what is best about
our country, and they are the epitome of the American Warrior. They now achieve immortal status in the history of the US
Armed Forces!

USMC Commandant Chosen to be Chairman of the Joint Chiefs!
In 2003, Joseph Dunford commanded the first Marine unit to
enter Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom, now 12 years later the
President of the United States has selected the Commandant of the
Marine Corps to an even more prestigious and challenging post.
General Dunford will take command of all of the US Military as
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs! He will succeed General Martin
Dempsey of the US Army as America’s top General on 30
September 2015.
GENERAL OF MARINES
Dunford assumed the duties as the top Devil Dog of the Corps in
October 2014. The Boston native has been leading Marines since
1977. The career Infantry Officer who is Airborne and Ranger
qualified has served in many elite units of the Corps including the
5th Marines, 2nd ANGLICO and I MEF. Known for outstanding
leadership ability and courage he earned the nickname “Fighting
Joe” during his service in OIF.
General Dunford will no doubt serve with distinction and skill as
the US’ top General. It is great to have a Marine leading the way!
Good luck Fighting Joe, Marines everywhere know you will do
your Leathernecks proud! God Speed General and Semper
Fidelis!
FIGHTING JOE DUNFORD
This Memorial Day we remember the Marines Killed
in a Mission of Mercy
Marines go into harm’s way, its just what we do! Since
1775 the Corps has met every challenge we were put up
against. In battle we vanquish our enemies to free
oppressed people, and make the world a better place. But
what if that enemy is Mother Nature herself? Throughout
the history of the Corps, Marines have gone into areas
ravaged by storms, earthquakes and other natural disasters.
In every instance have shown just as much heroism as on
any battlefield. With one big difference, in war we can
crush our enemies to complete our mission, but nature does
not back down to anyone! But nevertheless we go in, risk
our lives for others, its part of being a Marine. This was the
case in Nepal, following the terrible earthquake that
pummeled that country, and took from our Corps some of
our finest warriors. Let us take the time to remember those
who lost their lives along with two Nepalese Soldiers. Let
us never forget their sacrifice when their helicopter went
down on their Mission of Mercy.
REST IN PEACE MARINES, you will never be forgotten!

Mitchell Paige The Bloody Canal
Guadalcanal was the first offensive in the Pacific following the Japanese conquests
in the winter of 1941-42. The 1st Marine Division on the Canal gained fame and
even a mythical status among its fellow Americans due to the heroism of its
Marines and Sailors. During this battle, a few demonstrated valor and intrepidity at
risk of life above and beyond the call of duty. Mitchell Paige was one of those
Marines, whose skill and heroism in battle would earn him a battlefield
commission and the our country’s highest award for combat valor, The Medal of
Honor. In Charleroi, Pa on 31 Aug 1918 this future Marine legend was born.
His family emigrated from Austria Hungary which had just been defeated by
Paige and his MG Team
the allies in the First World War. His mother told
to them to know their roots but that they should
strive to be good, proud Americans. Mitchell did
just that while growing up in Camden Hill, Pa.
During his time in school, Paige was a member of
the Boy Scouts of America earning the highest
award in Scouting, the Rank of Eagle Scout. He
earned the rank in 1936, however, he would not
receive his award until 2003. This was due to the
fact that in Sept 1936, following his graduation
from McKeesport High School, he went off to
enlist in the Marines on 1 Sept 1936.
Mitchell Paige
Amazing group of Leathernecks
Vandergrift, Edson, Paige and Basilone
Upon graduation from Parris Island in November he transferred to Quantico for additional training.
Paige received orders to the battleship USS Wyoming. His duties onboard the Wyoming were as a
gunner. In 1937, following a short stay at the Mare Island Naval Yard, Paige was shipped over seas to
the Philippine Islands, specifically to the town of Cavite. There he turned in his rifle for a baseball bat.
Paige traveled the Philippines and the Orient playing ball as a member of the All Navy-Marine Baseball
Team. Over the next year from 1938-39, he would go to China and help protect US interests during
Tientsen Flood. He would return to the U.S. in 1940, first as a guard at the Naval Yard in Brooklyn, then
in September he joined the famed 5th Marine Regiment. He would serve with the 5th in Cuba and
Puerto Rico. In 1941 he was sent to North Carolina to help construct the base that would later be named
Camp Lejeune! On 7 Dec 1941, America was drawn into the world war that had been raging for several
years. The Japanese attack on Pearl harbor not only brought to bear against the Axis the most powerful
industrial nation in the world, but for Japan in particular, the United States Marine Corps would be
unleashed on the forces of the Japanese Empire! Mitchell would be assigned to The 7th Marines, where
he would join some other famous Marines , Chesty Puller and John Basilone. The 7th Marines would
deploy to British Samoa to prepare for the battle that would elevate Sgt Mitchell Paige to Marine Corps
immortality. In September of 1942 The 7th Marines would be part of the invasion force that would make
history and make the First Marine Division a household name. That battle in the heart of the Solomon
Islands was the Battle of Guadalcanal!
On 26 Oct 1942 and Paige was serving as a Platoon
Sergeant in 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines. He was in charge of
a machine gun section. That night then during a ferocious
Japanese attack the American lines started to waiver under
the overwhelming assault. Just then, right in front of his
section’s position the Japanese troops broke through the
Marine’s lines! What Plt Sgt Paige did next was an
incredible feat of bravery above and beyond the call of
duty. Paige continued to direct his men to lay down deadly
accurate fire in attempts to thwart the Japanese break
through. His men gunned down the charging Japanese and
held their ground although taking heavy casualties. As the
battle progressed and the Japanese kept coming, Paige’s
men had all been killed or wounded. Paige continued to
battle the attackers, as one machine gun went down or ran
out of ammo, he would run to the next and continue to
defend his position, and would continue this, moving from
gun to gun. Finally more Marine reinforcements arrived
and quickly Paige organized them and reformed up the line.
He then prepared to bring the fight to the enemy, calling for
his men to FIX BAYONETS! He led them on a bayonet
charge throwing the enemy back and stopping the enemy’s
breakthrough.
In December of 1942 while still on the “CANAL” Paige
received a battlefield commission to 2nd Lt. Then in the
Spring of 1943 Paige would receive the Medal of Honor
from Commandant of the Marine Corps General
Vandergrift, (Vandergrift was also a MOH Recipient).
Paige would continue to lead troops against the Japanese
for the rest of the war. Even after the war’s end in 1945, he
stayed in the Corps rising through the ranks until his
retirement in 1959 where he was promoted to the rank of
Colonel.

Paige greeting Marines just before his death
Paige is the namesake for Saddle River
Detachment’s Eagle Scout Award. This
award has become quite coveted among the
Scouting Community
On 24 Mar 2003, Paige finally received an honor he had earned back in
1936, when the Boy Scouts of America presented Paige with his Eagle Scout
award. In the history of the Medal of Honor only nine men are known to have
earned the rank of Eagle Scout and been a recipient of the Medal of Honor.
The BSA further bestowed upon Paige the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award.
On 15 November 2004 ,we lost Colonel Mitchell Paige to the ages. The heart
so full of courage and honor during the life of this outstanding Marine gave out
after 85 years. Col Paige has taken his final post and is laid to rest in California
at Riverside National Cemetery. A truly great man, outstanding Marine, and
honorable Boy Scout, Mitchell Paige will be remembered forever as one of
America’s elite warriors,…...
A United States Marine Medal of Honor Recipient!
Thoughts and memories from Saddle River’s Warriors!!!!!!!
Marine heroes throughout history have been honored for their valor by
becoming the namesake for naval vessels. Medal of Honor Recipients, fallen
warriors and great leaders have been given that honor. Jason Dunham, Merritt Edson and Presley O’Bannon just to name a few. In 2012 Secretary of the Navy Ray
Mabus announced five new vessels that would go to sea, two named for heroic
Marines. This article was released on 15 Feb 2012 in the Navy News Service.
Navy Names Five New Ships
Story Number: NNS120215-07Release Date: 2/15/2012 2:50:00 PM
From the Department of the Navy
WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus
announced Feb. 15 the next five Navy ships; three Arleigh Burke
-class guided-missile destroyers, USS John Finn, USS Ralph
Johnson, and USS Rafael Peralta, and two littoral combat ships
(LCS), USS Sioux City and USS Omaha.
Mabus named the three destroyers after Navy and Marine Corps
heroes whose actions occurred during different conflicts which
spanned several decades, but were united in their uncommon
valor. The littoral combat ships were named after two American
communities.
John Finn, who retired as a lieutenant, received the Medal of
Honor from Adm. Chester Nimitz for displaying "magnificent
courage in the face of almost certain death" during the Japanese
attack on military installations in Hawaii during Pearl Harbor.
Marine Corps Pfc. Ralph Henry Johnson was posthumously
awarded the Medal of Honor for shouting a warning to his fellow
Marines and hurling himself on an explosive device, saving the
life of one Marine and preventing the enemy from penetrating his
sector of the patrol's perimeter during the Vietnam War. Marine
Corps Staff Sgt. Rafael Peralta was posthumously awarded the
Navy Cross for selflessly covering a grenade with his body to
save his fellow Marines from the blast during Operation Iraqi
Freedom.
"Finn, Johnson and Peralta have all been recognized with
some of our nation's highest awards," said Mabus. "I want to
ensure their service and sacrifice will be known by today's sailors
and Marines and honored for several decades to come by a new
generation of Americans and people from around the world who
will come in contact with these ships."
John Finn USN, MOH and drawing of ship

Ralph Johnson USMC, MOH and drawing of ship
named in his honor
The Arleigh Burke-class destroyers will be able to conduct a
variety of operations, from peacetime presence and crisis management to sea control and power projection. All three ships will be
capable of fighting air, surface and subsurface battles simultaneously
and will contain a myriad of offensive and defensive weapons
designed to support maritime warfare in keeping with the Navy's
ability to execute the Department of Defense' defense strategy.
"The littoral combat ship is a major part of the future of our Navy,"
Mabus said, pointing out LCS is fast, agile, and operates with a
smaller crew and can perform operations in both shallow and deep
waters.
"I chose the name for our two new littoral combat ships after
Midwestern cities from America's heartland, to honor the patriotic,
hard-working citizens of Sioux City, Iowa, and Omaha, Nebraska, for
their support of and contributions to the military."
Sioux City and Omaha will be outfitted with reconfigurable
payloads, called mission packages, which can be changed out quickly
as combat needs demand. These mission packages are supported by
special detachments that will deploy manned and unmanned vehicles
and sensors in support of mine, undersea and surface warfare missions.
Marinette Marine in Marinette, Wis., will build the Freedom
variant, USS Sioux City, which will be 378 feet in length, have a
waterline beam of 57 feet, displace approximately 3,000 tons, and
make speed in excess of 40 knots. Austal USA in Mobile, Ala., will
build the Independence variant, USS Omaha, which will be 419 feet
in length, have a waterline beam of 103 feet, displace approximately
3,000 tons, and make speed in excess of 40 knots.

life of PFC Kenneth John Brown, the Marine killed on Saipan in 1944.
As you may recall, the SRD led the League in a restoration project of
PFC Brown’s gravesite that was swallowed up by a large tree. O’Brien
was the childhood friend of Brown’s that came forward with needed
information to help us restore the fallen Leatherneck’s final resting
place to the grandeur it deserved. The League, our Detachment and our
members are featured in the book as well. The event will be held at at

The uniform is not mandatory, but it is requested that at least you wear
your League cover to the event. This is a great cause connected to a
key event in SRD’s history and any participation by membership will
be greatly appreciated.
