Angela was chosen as a Coalgate Record-Register ‘All I Want for Christmas’ kiddo when she was spotted at the children’s Christmas party hosted by Choctaw Nation District 12. And, yes, Angela really would like to have some new front teeth for Christmas — along with
some pretty presents, of course. Angela is 7 years old. She is a second grade student at Emerson

Most folks are concerned about the economy this Christmas
. . . just like they were in 1948 when inflation was a concern to
most Americans. It was that year that Carolyn Fox wrote the
following poem on the effect of inflation on Santa. The title of
the poem was:
Tarnation!
Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house
How the tinsel was scattered! and twigs by the thousand.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with careThey were skewered with ten-penny nails, to be fair.
The children, God bless them, were snug in their beds,
With clothesline to anchor the ankles and heads.
The Wife in her housecoat, and I clad alike,
Had gone to cellar to get the new bike,
When from a dark corner arose such a clatter
I felt a strong urge to forget the whole matter.
The wife said go over and open the door;
I grabbed a stout cudgel and crept ‘cross the floor
And gingerly peered through the glass to behold
A wee red-suited man, turning blue with cold.
Suppressing my dire thoughts of a communist trick,
I flung wide the portal, admitting..... St. Nick!
Poor Santa came in stamping snow from his feet
And cursing cold weather and all central heat.
“Your chimney’s too small for a man of my girth”--Which shows what the power of tradition is worth.
I asked him to stay, as the perfect host ought,
And my gimlet eyes gleamed at the parcels he brought.
Upstairs in the kitchen, hot toddy in hand,
Old Santa had both of us folks understand
That the new station wagon he’d purchased this year
To replace his eight quaint reindeer
was the poorest investment he ever had chosen-It stalled by our house the engine plumb frozen.
My wife asked him then if the high cost of living,
Had interfered much with the job of gift-giving.
“I’ll say so,” quoth he. “Why, a plain roller skate
Is costing me $40.98;
And the cheapest new belt, since inflation intruded,
Costs $11.27, all taxes included;
My labor is raising all manor of hob -In fact, this here Christmas is too big a job.”
asking of Thee.
“I want a wax dolly, a play set and ring and an ebony work box that shuts with a spring. Bless papa,
dear Jesus, and cause him to see that Santa Claus loves us far better then he; Don’t let him get fretful
and angry again at dear brother Willie and Annie. Amen.”
“Please Desus, ‘et Santa Taus tum down tonight and b’ing us some presents before it is light. I want
he should div’ me a nice ‘ittle s’ed with b’ite shiny ‘unners, and all painted red; A box of tandy, a book
and a toy then, Desus, I’ll be a dood little boy. Amen.”
Their prayers being ended, they raised up their heads and with hearts light and cheerful again sought
their beds. They were soon lost in slumber both peaceful and deep and with fairies in dreamland were
rooming in sleep.
Eight, Nine and the little French clock had struck Ten ‘ere the father had thought of his children
again. He seemed now to hear Annie’s suppressed little sighs, and to see the big tears stand in Willie’s
blue eyes.
“I was harsh with my darlings,” he mentally said, “and should not have sent them so early to bed.
But then I was troubled—my feelings found vent, for bank stock today has gone down ten per cent.
“But of course they’ve forgotten their troubles ere this. And that I denied them the thrice asked for
kiss. But just to make sure I’ll steal up to their door, for I never spoke harsh to my darlings before.”
So saying, he softly ascended the stairs, and arrived at the door to hear both of their prayers. His
Annie’s “bless papa” draws forth the big tears. And Willie’s grave promise falls sweet on his ears.
“Strange, strange, I’d forgotten,” said he with a sigh, “how I longed when a child to have Christmas
draw nigh. I’ll atone for my harshness,” he inwardly said, “by answering their prayer, ere I sleep in
my bed.”
Then he turned to the stairs, and softly went down, threw off velvet slippers and silk dressing-gown,
donned hat, coat and boots, and was out in the street. A millionaire facing the cold driving sleet.
Nor stopped he until he had bought everything from a box of candy to a tiny gold ring. Indeed, he
kept adding so much to his store that the various presents outnumbered a score. Then homeward he
turned with his holiday load and with Aunt Mary’s aid in the nursery ‘twas stowed.
Miss dolly was seated beneath a pine tree, by the side of a table spread out for to see. A work box

When a wrecker from town came to give him a tow.
He left a tin whistle for Joey, our son,
And a watch for Matilda - I bet it won’t run;
For the Wife, a new apron that makes her flesh crawl,
And a tie for yours truly completed our haul.
But I heard him exclaim, as he rolled out of sight,
“The blazes with Christmas--Tarnation is right!”

Just a few more days and Christmas Day will be here. This year
there are two special articles I want to share with our readers.
The first is a Christmas poem written over one hundred years ago
by Sophia P. Snow. It was titled:
Annie & Willie’s Christmas Prayer
Twas the eve before Christmas; Goodnight had been said and
Annie and Willie had crept into bed. There were tears on their
pillows, and tears in their eyes, and each little bosom was heaving
with sighs, for tonight their stern father’s command had been given
that they should retire precisely at seven instead of at eight for they
troubled him more with questions unheard of than ever before.
He told them he thought this delusion a sin. No such thing as
Santa Claus ever had been and he hoped, after this, he would never
more hear how he scrambled down chimneys with presents each
year. And this was the reason that two little heads so restlessly
tossed on their soft downy beds.
Eight, Nine, and the clock in the steeple tolled Ten; Not a word
had been spoken by either till then; when Willie’s sad face from
the blankets did peep, and whispered, “Dear Annie is ‘ou fast
as’eep?”
“Why no, brother Willie,” a sweet voice replied. “I have tried in
vain but can’t shut my eyes. For somehow it makes me so sorry
because dear papa has said there is no Santa Claus. Now we know
that there is and it can’t be denied, for he came every year before
mamma died. But then I am thinking that she used to pray and God
would hear everything mamma would say and perhaps she asked
Him to send Santa Claus here with the sack full of presents he
brought every year.”
“Well why tan’t we pray dest as mamma did then and ask Him to
send him with presents adain.”
“I’ve been thinking so too,” and without a word more, four little
bare feet bounded out on the floor.
Four little knees the soft carpet pressed, and two tiny hands
were clasped close to each breast. “Now, Willie, you know we
must firmly believe that the presents we’ve asked for we’re sure
to receive. You must wait just as still, till I say the “Amen” and by
that you will know that your turn has come then . . . Dear Jesus,
Look down on my brother and me and grant us the favor we are

well filled in the center was laid and on it the ring for which Annie
had prayed, a soldier in uniform stood by a sled with bright shining
runners, and all painted red;
There were balls, dogs and horses, books pleasing to see and birds
of all colors were perched in the tree; while Santa Claus, laughing,
stood up in the top, as if getting ready more presents to drop.
And as the fond father the picture surveyed, he thought for his
trouble he had amply been paid, and he said to himself, as he
brushed off a tear, “I’m happier tonight than I’ve been for a year.
“I’ve enjoyed more true pleasure than ever before. What care I
if bank stock fails ten percent more; hereafter I’ll make it a rule, I
believe to have Santa Claus visit us each Christmas Eve.”
So thinking, he gently extinguished the light, then tripped down
the stairs to retire for the night, as soon as the beams of the bright
morning sun, put the darkness to flight, and the stars one by one.
Four little blue eyes out of sleep open’d wide, and at the same
moment the presents spied; then out of their beds they sprang with
a bound and the very gifts prayed for were all of them found.
They laughed and they cried in their innocent glee, and shouted for
papa to come quick and see what presents old Santa Claus brought
in the night, (just the things that they wanted) and left before light.
“And now,” added Annie, in a voice soft and low, “you’ll believe
there’s a Santa Claus, papa, I know.” While dear little Willie climbed
up on his knee, determined no secret between them should be,
And told in soft whispers how Annie had said, that their dear
blessed mamma so long ago dead, used to kneel down and pray by
the side of her chair, and that God up in heaven had answered her
prayer!
“Then we dot up and prayed dust as well as we tould, and Dod
answered our prayers; now wasn’t He dood?”
“I should say that He was if He sent you all these, and knew just
what presents my children would please.”
(Well, well let him think so, the dear little elf; ‘twould be cruel
to tell him I did it myself.) Blind father! Who caused your proud
heart to relent and the hasty word spoken so soon to repent? ‘Twas
Lord Jesus who bade you steal softly upstairs, and made His agent
to answer their prayers.

And the last article, a special letter . . .
Dear Friend:
As you well know, we are getting closer to my birthday. Every
year there is a celebration in my honor and I think that this year the
celebration will be repeated.
During this time there are many people shopping for gifts, there
are many radio announcements, TV commercials, and in every part
of the world everyone is talking that my birthday is getting closer
and closer.
It is really very nice to know, that at least once a year, some people
think of me.
As you know, the celebration of my birthday began many years
ago.
At first people seemed to understand and be thankful of all that I
did for them, but in these times, no one seems to know the reason
for the celebration.
Family and friends get together and have a lot of fun, but they
don’t know the meaning of the celebration. I remember that last
year there was a great feast in my honor. The dinner table was full
of delicious foods, pastries, fruits, assorted nuts and chocolates. The
decorations were exquisite and there were many, many beautifully
wrapped gifts.
But, do you want to know something? I wasn’t invited.
I was the guest of honor and they didn’t remember to send me an
invitation.
The party was for me, but when that great day came, I was left
outside, they closed the door in my face .. And I wanted to be with
them and share their table.
In truth, that didn’t surprise me because in the last few years all
close Their doors to me. Since I wasn’t invited, I decided to Enter the
party without making any noise. I went in and stood in a corner.
They were all drinking; there were some who were drunk and
telling jokes and Laughing at everything. They were having a grand
time.
To top it all, this big fat man all dressed in red wearing a long
white beard entered the room yelling Ho-Ho-Ho! He seemed drunk.
He sat on the sofa and all the children ran to him, saying: “Santa
Claus, Santa Claus” as if the party were in his honor!
At midnight all the people began to hug each other; I extended
my arms waiting for someone to hug me and do you know no-one
hugged me.
Suddenly they all began to share gifts. They opened them one
by one with great expectation. When all had been opened, I looked
to see if, maybe, there was one for me. What would you feel if on
your birthday everybody. Shared gifts and you did not get one?
I then understood that I was unwanted at that party and quietly
left.
Every year it gets worse. People only remember the gifts, the
parties, to eat and drink, and nobody remembers me.
I would like this Christmas that you allow me to enter into your
life.
I would like that you recognize the fact that more than two
thousand years ago I came to this world to give my life for you, on
the cross, to save you.
Today, I only want that you believe this with all your heart.
I want to share something with you. As many didn’t invite me to
their party, I will have my own celebration, a grandiose party that
no one has ever imagined, a spectacular party. I’m still making the
final arrangements.
Today I am sending out many invitations and there is an invitation
for you. I want to know if you wish to attend and I will make a
reservation for you and write your name with golden letters in my
great guest book.
Only those on the guest list will be invited to the party.
Those who don’t answer the invite, will be left outside. Be
prepared because when all is ready you will be part of my great
party.
See you soon. I Love you!
Jesus

—Bigger Bellies: Bad for Bones?
Do you recall reading that
extra weight can protect your
bones? If so, you probably
thought, hey, great – at least
it’s good for something.
Well, sorry, but researchers
are now making somewhat
of an 180-degree turn – or, at
least when it comes to “spare
tires.” It looks as though
extra belly weight doesn’t
only increase the risk of
heart disease and diabetes. It
may also increase your risk
of osteoporosis. That’s the
condition causing fragile,
porous bones in about 10
million Americans and
leading to more than 1.5
million fractures each year.
A Harvard study looked at
50 premenopausal women
who had an average body
mass index (BMI) of about
30, which is considered
obese. It found that women
who packed away more fat
around their middles had
lower bone mineral density,
a set-up for fragile bones.
Researchers aren’t sure
why this kind of fat hurts
bones. But they do know that
deep belly fat releases fatty
acids into the liver. It also
releases other substances
and hormones that are hard
on the heart and pancreas. It
could be that similar changes
are wreaking havoc with
your bones, too.
Now you’ve got one
more reason to let loose of
those love handles. That’s
especially true if you are
female, 65 or older, slender,
Caucasian or Asian, or
you have a family history
of osteoporosis.
There
are other osteoporosis risk
factors, but ones you can
mostly control:
· You

So how can you know if
your belly is too big, and
what can you do about it?
Use a soft tape measure to
check your waist. If you’re
a woman and your waist
measures 35 inches or more,
it’s time to lose a little. (If
you’re a man, that number
is 40 inches or more.) Also
use a BMI chart to help
guide yourself into a healthy
weight range (18.5–24.9).
The good news is that belly
fat is often the first fat to go.
That’s because it’s more
metabolically active. Other
steps for banishing the big
belly? For example, eat
more whole grains, fruits,
and vegetables, which fill
you up faster, combined
with proteins. Eat fewer
refined foods like white rice
or bread, which elevate your
blood sugar, often leading
to a faster deposit of fat.
Don’t forget the other
side of the weight-loss
equation: exercise. Extra
crunches aren’t the answer,
even though that might
seem like a logical place
to start. Instead, work up
to 60 minutes of aerobic
exercise like brisk walking,
combined with regular
resistance training to build
calorie-burning muscles.

Wildcats Come Up Short
In Homecoming Game
—Coalgate struggles with shooting the ball in the basket in recent losses
By HERMAN BROWN
Coalgate
W
Wildcat
correspondent
The
Coalgate
Wildcats
suffered back-to-back losses in
the two games played just prior
to the Christmas break.
CHS lost 43-31 in a road
game Tuesday with the Antlers
Bearcats. Then, on Thursday,
Coalgate dropped a 56-53 loss
to the Atoka Wampus Cats. The
Coalgate setback was in the
CHS homecoming game again
the Wildcats’ biggest rival.
Coalgate’s biggest concern
at Antlers was a weak shooting
performance. The Wildcats
struggled from the field and
even at the free throw line.
“We didn’t shoot very well,”
Coach Kerwin Manion said.
“We missed too many bumps
and easy shots. But we also
failed to block out and made too
many turnovers.”
Antlers took an 8-4 lead in the
first quarter. The Bearcats then
used a 16-7 scoring edge in the
second quarter to gain a 24-11
halftime advantage. Coalgate
was only 1-for-11 on 2-point
field goal shooting during the
first half.
The Wildcats played much
better in the second half. They
outscored the Bearcats 2019. However, effort was not
enough to overtake the doubledigit lead. Antlers held on for a
43-31 victory.
Lance Walker was the leading
scorer for Coalgate with 13
points. Colby Lackey just
missed double digits with 9
points. C.J. McClain added 7
points for the Wildcats. Dustin
Ybarra rounded out the scoring
list with 2 points.
“You have to give credit to
Antlers,” Coach Manion said.
“They have a good team. We
will have to do a better job on
the little things as we move
ahead. You won’t win games
against teams like Antlers unless
you shoot the ball better, block
out for rebounds, and cut down
on turnovers.”
On Thursday, Coalgate hosted
the Atoka Wampus Cats for
the annual CHS Homecoming
celebration. The game ended
up as a 3-point loss for the
Wildcats, 56-53.
Atoka outscored the host
squad in each of the first three
quarters. The Wampus Cats
led 16-14 after one quarter and
28-22 at the half. AHS then
extended the lead to double
digits at 42-32 at the end of third
period.
Coalgate fans were then
delighted in the fourth quarter.
The Wildcats ignited a strong
comeback bid. The effort led
to a chance to tie the game with
30 seconds to go. CHS swished
the first attempt on a pair of free
throws. That got CHS to within
a point at 52-51. The second
free throw shot was off the
mark. However, the Wildcats
rebounded and scored the goahead basket for a 53-52 lead.
From there, the Wampus Cats
scored the final four points to
win 56-53.
The scoring load for Coalgate
was carried mainly by three
players. Colby Lackey was tops
with 16 points. C.J. McClain
added 11 points. Lance Walker

Coalgate
Man
Charged
With
Assault and
Battery On
A Police
Officer
A Coalgate man was
charged Monday with
felony assault and battery
on a police officer. The
alleged assault occurred in
the Coal County Sheriff’s
Office after the man was
involved in a vehicle crash
and arrested for driving a
motor vehicle while under
the influence of alcoholaggravated.
Oklahoma
Highway
Patrol trooper John Ivey
said he was called to the
scene of an accident on
Willow Street near SH
31 in Cottonwood at 2:44
p.m., December 17.
A white 2009 Chevrolet
pickup driven by Kevin
Dale Ennis, 44, was in
a ditch, Ivey said. The
pickup had run off the road
on the left side, struck a
tree, and then crossed the
road to the right before
coming to rest in the ditch,
Ivey said.
Trooper Ivey stated that
Ennis had a strong odor
of alcoholic beverage,
slurred, confused speech
and very unstable balance.
He told Ivey he did not
know why he was in the
vehicle or where he was
going but did admit to
driving. A nearly empty
bottle of whiskey was
found on the floorboard of
the pickup.
Ennis was transported
to Mary Hurley Hospital
“to get his injuries cleaned
up,” Ivey said, and then
transported to the Coal
County jail. He stated
that Ennis agreed to take a
state test for blood alcohol
content. He tested .31,
Ivey said, adding that the
legal limit is .08 and a
reading of .15 or above
constitutes
aggravated
DUI. Ennis was arrested
for aggravated driving
under the influence of
alcohol and transporting
an open container of
alcohol.
A probable
cause
affidavit filed by Coal
County sheriff’s deputy
Melvin Jackson states that
he was assisting Ivey in
escorting Ennis to a jail
cell when the assault and
battery took place.
Jackson said when he
took Ennis by his left
arm and helped him to his
feet, Ennis began to get
belligerent, pulled away,
and told Jackson to take
his hands off him. He then
turned toward Jackson and
pushed him away
The deputy said he told
Ennis to stop and “just go
into his cell,” but Ennis
slapped him and pushed
him away a second time.
Jackson said he performed
a tactical “take down” and
handcuffed Ennis.
Coal County EMS was
called to the sheriff’s
office to check Ennis
because some injuries he
sustained in the vehicle
accident had broken open,
Jackson stated. He was
then placed in a jail cell.

Coalgate Man Charged
With Child Sex Crimes
Charges were filed last week against a Coalgate man
accused of committing sex crimes against a child.
Donal Megerkurth, 41, is facing child sexual
exploitation and soliciting a minor for indecent exposure/
obscene material.
An investigation into accusations against Megerkurth
was launched in July 2011 when the victim’s mother
contacted the Coalgate Police Department, court
records show. The case was subsequently turned over
to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation Internet
Crimes Against Children Unit.
Information filed by the district attorney’s office states
that Megerkurth persuaded the girl “to engage in lewd,
obscene, and pornographic photography/filming…” and
induced her to participate in “the viewing, publishing
and distributing of obscene material” over a period of
about five months.
The penalty for child sexual exploitation varies from
one year in the county jail and a fine of $500 to $5,0000
to life imprisonment in the state penitentiary.
Soliciting a minor for indecent exposure/obscene
material carries a penalty of 10 to 30 years in the state
penitentiary and/or a fine of $500 to $20,000.
Megerkurth was arrested Tuesday afternoon in Atoka
County on a warrant carrying $200,000 bond. He
was scheduled to make his initial court appearance on
Tuesday afternoon.

Lady Wildcats Split
Final Games of 2011
—Coalgate girls win on road at Antlers, lose to Atoka in CHS homecoming
By HERMAN BROWN
Coalgate Wildcat correspondent
The Coalgate Lady Wildcats
split their final two games of
2011. The CHS girls won 4540 on the road at Antlers on
Tuesday. However, the Lady
Wildcats then suffered a loss to
the visiting Atoka Lady Wampus
Cats on Thursday. The 66-50
setback came in Coalgate’s
annual homecoming game.
On Tuesday, Coach Jim Jenson
watched his Lady Wildcats stage
a successful fourth-quarter rally
at Antlers. Coalgate had led 1812 at halftime. But then Antlers
exploded for 19 points in the
third quarter to grab a 31-27
advantage. CHS stormed back
with 18 points in the fourth
quarter while limiting Antlers to
nine points. That surge pushed
Coalgate to a 45-40 victory over
the Lady Bearcats.
A pair of Coalgate players
finished in double figures in
scoring.
Cherokee Acker
dropped in a team-high 16
points. Jade Ward was close
behind with 15 points.
“We played really well,” said
Coach Jenson. “We didn’t
shoot all that well, but we didn’t
turn the ball over as much. We
finished strong in the fourth
quarter and hit the free throws
when we needed them.”
Coalgate dropped in eight of
14 foul shots down the stretch.
Coach Jenson added praise for
the excellent play of Cherokee
Acker and Jade Ward for their
scoring, and also for Cen`e
Fixico for her 15 rebounds.

were hoping to extend the streak
to four straight. However, the
Atoka Lady Wampus Cats scored
a 66-50 victory to spoil the CHS
homecoming and snap the win
streak.
The CHS girls led 14-11 after
the first quarter. However,
Atoka seized control over the
second and third quarters. The
Lady Wampus Cats outscored
the host team 18-9 in the second
period and 26-9 in a wild third
quarter. The combined effort
extended the Atoka lead to 5532 going into the final period.
Coalgate came back to outscore
AHS 18-11 down the stretch.
That rounded out the final score
to 66-50 in Atoka’s favor.
The scoring parade for CHS
included eight girls, but only
two in double figures. Jade
Ward finished with 13 points
while Cherokee Acker managed
12. Tandra Elkins just missed
double digits with a 9-point
performance. Cen`e Fixico led
the remaining scorers with 6
points.

Christmastime brings many memories from my childhood: great food cooking,
making fudge, spending time with family and friends, unwrapping gifts and
Christmas caroling. Some years Christmas was pretty generous, some years a little
lean. As children we always understood the focus of Christmas was based on the

Coach Jenson reviewed the
game and pointed to a pivotal
timeframe.
“The third quarter doomed
us,” he said. “We came out and
could not get the ball to go in
the hole. They (Atoka girls)
could not miss. They hit three
treys and that seemed to really
ignite them. We came back in
the fourth quarter and hit four
treys. But it was too deep a
hole to overcome.”

Report
Did You Know?
By Trooper John Ivey
Did you know that the
Coal and Atoka County
commissioners have passed
resolutions that all county
roads are 45 mph unless
otherwise posted? The county
road speed limit signs are
posted on the highways when
you enter the county.
Did you know that you can
still receive a citation for speed
if the road is unsafe or will
not allow a vehicle to travel
at 45 mph? Example: It has
rained for several hours and
the road is holding water and
slick. You lose control of your
vehicle and hit a tree because
of the road conditions. Even
though you were driving the
speed limit, you were driving
too fast for the conditions that
the road would allow.
The Oklahoma Highway
Patrol wants you to be safe this
New Year’s Eve and will have
extra patrols out not only on
the highways but the county
roads as well.
Have a safe and happy
holiday season.

the top teams. We just ran out
of gas in the fourth quarter.
Caddo was good enough to pull
away a little at the end.”
Tupelo managed an 11-9 lead
in the first quarter. Caddo then
rallied to a tight 23-22 halftime
edge. The Bruins also narrowly
outscored Tupelo, 17-15, in the
third period. That provided
them a 40-37 lead going into
the fourth quarter.
Caddo then outscored the
Tigers 16-10 down the stretch.
That turned the 3-point lead
into a 9-point win at 56-47.
Matt Benedict powered the
unsuccessful upset bid with
a rock-solid 17 point scoring
performance. Tanner Davis
also scored in double figures
with 12 points. The rest of
the scoring included Brandon
Chamberlain with 8 points,
Zac Lewis with 4, and Chat
Henry, H.D. Bullard and Corey
McCollum with 2 points each.
“It’s a loss, but our team
defense and rebounding was
probably our best effort for four
full quarters of basketball,”
Coach Weller said. “Caddo is
really big and really athletic.
We did a really good job of
battling with them and playing
hard. Our rebounding was a
key to us staying in the game.
But in the fourth quarter they
wore us down. We ran out of
gas with three or four minutes
to go. And credit Caddo for
hitting some big shots to pull
away a little.”
The Tigers are now enjoying
their Christmas and New
Year’s Day holiday. They’ll
have some practice time and
scrimmage work over the next
couple of weeks.
“We want to build on what
we have been doing,” Coach
Weller said. “We’ll be working
on things and continue to see if
we can get better.”

Lady Tigers Fall 47-36 To Visiting Caddo Squad
—Tupelo girls suffer latest loss due to poor shooting performance
By HERMAN BROWN
Tupelo correspondent
The Tupelo Lady Tigers
ended the pre-Christmas
schedule with a 47-36
loss to the Caddo Lady
Bruins. The setback came
last Thursday evening at
Tupelo High School.
Tupelo head coach Missy
Rogers had hoped her THS
girls would bounce into the
holiday with a win over
the talented Caddo Lady
Bruins. However, a case
of poor shooting by Tupelo
doomed any chances of a
victory.
“Our scoring hurt us,”
said Coach Rogers. “We
were just 2 of 10 in the first
quarter and 0 of 6 in the
second. You can’t expect
to win doing that. But we
still had our chances …
and we are playing good
defense most of the time.
We just couldn’t connect
on our shots.”
The visiting Lady Bruins
led 6-4 after a low-scoring
first quarter.
Tupelo’s
scoring touch was even
worse in the second
quarter as the Lady Tigers
were outscored 9-1 during
the span. That left the
host squad trailing 15-5 at
intermission.
Tupelo did a much better Sanders 10, Kaley Sanders 5, Kelsie Warner 4, Chamberlain 2, and Haley

half. The Lady Tigers
managed 13 points in the
third stanza. However,
the visitors answered with
15 points to take a 30-18
advantage into the final
period.
The Lady Tigers finished
with 18 points in the fourth
quarter. That was one
more point than the visitors
managed. The result was
the 47-36 final, which went
in Caddo’s favor.
Tupelo had two players
reach double figures in
scoring. Brittany Sanders
and Kaley Sanders each
dropped in 10 points. Five
other Lady Tigers scored in
the game, but nobody with
more than five points.
“We are going to work on
our offense,” said Coach
Rogers said. “Our defense
has been doing a pretty
good job. We’ll need to
keep playing defense and
get better on offense.”

May the simple joys of the season be yours.
HURLEY MANOR residents and their families and friends always enjoy the music programs
that Tom Owen presents at the residents’ Christmas parties. Of course, Tom never fails to get
a ‘volunteer’ group together to play one of his favorite instruments — the harmonica. Some
‘volunteers’ are happier than others to play a harmonica for the first time in front a large audience
— but most manage a smile from time to time. And so far, everyone has survived the experience.
This year’s group, directed, of course, by the master himself, included Jaclyn Shirley, Gerry Watkins
and Helen Allen, from left. It didn’t take Helen long to get caught up in the moment!

A Night In Bethlehem
MaKaylyn McNutt and Jarrett Self were Mary and Joseph in the live nativity, and Danner Hobbie was baby Jesus. The three kings are
Tommy Robson, Shane Jemison and Dusty Weathers. Others in the scene are Lee Weathers, shepherd; Don Stanberry, rabbi; Alex McNutt,
Roman soldier; and Amara McCollum, Angel Gabriel. “A Night In Bethlehem” is sponsored by the Ministerial Alliance.
These beautiful angels taking part in the living recreation of the night of Christ’s
birth are Sadey McNutt, Shalyn McCollum, Amara McCollum and Trayzr Hefley,
from left.
Johnny Joe and Tara Sandmann were clearly having
fun squishing red grapes between their toes inside a
market square winery! Johnny said he’s actually had
grape stomping on his bucket list for a long time but he
was surprised Tara agreed to do it. (And just for the
record, the grape juice was discarded at the end of the
night!)

How About Rewarding Your
Employees With One of the Best Tasting Turkey’s or
On the night Jesus was born, an angel of the Lord appeared to shepherds watching
over their flocks in a field outside of Bethlehem. The shepherds were afraid, but
the angel told them to fear not because he was bringing them “good tidings of
great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of
David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And…ye shall find the babe wrapped
in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger” (Luke 2:10-12). The shepherds shown
above are Brody McCollum, Brianna Thompson, Colten Ringels, Kinsy Ringels,
and Brian Ringels (back).
