President’s Message
My Fellow Members
I am so very grateful and enthusiastic to be given the opportunity
to serve you again as President. Thank you for placing your
confidence in me and in our team of Convenors that together,
comprise the 2016/2017 General Committee. We are fortunate to
have an excellent group of contributors on the Committee this
year and you have our commitment that we will work diligently to
ensure we remain the premier club in Singapore.
Guest Rooms Project
We are pleased that the Guest Room project received such
positive support – thank you! Our proposal to add eleven more
guest rooms on Level 5 of the Sports Complex, was successfully
carried at the Annual General Meeting (AGM); therefore, phase
one commences with the Hair Salon. After the Salon shifts from Level
5, and re-opens in its new location, we will begin the demolition
of the former spa, in preparation for this retrofit. We expect the
rooms will complete and open in the first quarter of 2017. Do stay
tuned for more updates via our electronic channels. If you are not
registered for NewsBites, our twice-weekly email updates, do write
to our General Manager at [email protected], to
ensure you receive these informative and important updates.
Bigger and Brighter Hair Salon
Hair Salon patrons, we have been listening to your calls for a bigger
space, with greater accessibility and proximity to washroom
facilities. Consider it done! Early July, we commence our Guest
Room Project efforts, with the conversion of the Wheelhouse
Function Room to become the new home for the Hair Salon. We
hope to be open by month-end. Arts & Crafts will be relocated to
the Family Complex, Rotary lunches are being shifted to Level 2,
whilst Balut and Darts will host their gatherings in the Fireplace this
month. As per above, you will find more information in upcoming
NewsBites.
Library
Continuing with renovation news, I’d also like to report that we are
pleased to finally open our doors to the new Library 1st July, with
grand opening festivities to follow on the 3rd of July, commencing
at 10.00am. It has been long awaited, but hopefully you find that
it has been worth the wait. With views and natural light on all three
sides, we hope you find the space more comfortable and inviting.
Of course with any change, there will be wrinkles that we need
to iron out, so do share your feedback, and we will endeavour to
mitigate notable issues as swiftly as possible. Please take note that
the new Library hours are 9.00am to 8.00pm daily.
Tangles Café
July also sees us wrap up our minor works to the Tangles Café, with
a proposed August re-opening. The large central island bar has
been removed, to make way for a healthier, faster, more casual,
self-serve environment. We thank you for your patience during its
closure. We have done our best to fulfil your food and beverage
needs in the interim by shifting the Tangles Express Lunch to the
Wheelhouse, opening the Beer Garden at 8.00am (versus 3.00pm)
to provide a venue for coffee gatherings, and augmented these
offerings with vending machines on Levels U1 and 2. We’ve taken
on board thoughtful feedback shared with us at the various ‘menu
focus group meetings’ and we are excited to further diversify our
range of products and services for you. This outlet will be the most
relaxed of our restaurants. We’re finalising variation orders with
the contractor, and once clear on our remaining budget, we will
finalise plans for the Business Centre. We’ll be back in touch with
news as soon as it is available.
Committees Revisited
A year ago, in my first President’s Message to you, I
highlighted that the Sub-Committees had decreased
from eleven to eight. This year, as we turn our focus
to a greater extent towards vision, policy setting and
strategy, we further empower management, and
reduce the number of Sub-Committees to seven.
Please allow me to elaborate on a few key changes.
On the next page, you will find that Kelvin Kaw, our
Editor, has taken on the challenge of the Information
Technology & Communications Sub-Committee. As
you know from the AGM, the Enterprise Resource
Planning (ERP) solution, which includes a Customer
Relationship
Management
(CRM)
module,
Membership Management Module, and upgrade
of the Point-of-Sales (POS) system, did not carry.
Therefore, the daunting task of progressing this critical
requirement is before Kelvin and his Committee. You
will be receiving regular updates on their progress, in
preparation for the Special General Meeting that will
be called in due course, to revisit this subject.
The Development and Planning Sub-Committee
(DPSC), headed by Co-Convenors Henry Ling and
Thomas Khoo, will also oversee the new AGMapproved Re-Development Task Force. Do keep a
lookout for more information about this in the coming
weeks. The DPSC will also tackle the Maintenance
Programming Plan for all our assets. It’s a rather large
undertaking of great importance, given our aging
Main Clubhouse.
Responsibility for the Library has now shifted to the
House Sub-Committee, with Co-Convenors Franklin
Wong and Mohan Mulani. House oversees the Club’s
various operational aspects, such as food & beverage,
events, housekeeping and security. The other SubCommittees remain largely the same in scope.
I am grateful for the diverse strengths and
professionalism of our 2016/2017 General Committee.
Collectively, it is our aim to serve you and the Club
even better in this coming year.
I look forward to seeing you at the Club.
Sincerely
Robert Wiener

Editor’s Message
"OUR CLUB HAS MISSED THE ERP
SYSTEM BOAT BY ABOUT 15 YEARS."
Fellow Members,
The previous two months of May and June saw the Club issue one
combined Club magazine May-June issue as a trial. During this period, the
Club’s electronic communications channels (NewsBites, the Club website,
and the digital screens) continued to provide Members with any new
updates or events that were not in the May-June combined issue. The
two months went by uneventfully from the Members’ Communications
point of view. This is not surprising, since the recent Club’s communications
survey results indicated that a large percentage of Members are
relying more on the real-time electronic communication channels for
updates on the latest events in the Club. If you still haven’t signed up
for NewsBites, I would recommend you to do so by sending an email to
[email protected].
The recent Club Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on 30 May has
come and gone, and the Club is now left with the voting decisions from
Members on the various proposed resolutions from the AGM. I would like to
focus on one of the proposed resolutions which was not approved by the
Membership, and that is the request for $3 million of capital expenditure for
an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution (which includes a Customer
Relationship Management (CRM) module, Membership Management
Module, and upgrade of the Point-of-Sales (POS) system) for the Club.
There have been various speculations as to why the resolution was not
approved. We have taken feedback from various Members, and will be
looking into them seriously. But at the end of the day, we still need an
ERP system for our Club. For those of you who are not familiar with the
term “Enterprise Resource Planning” (or “ERP” for short), it is a category of
business management software which helps businesses track and monitor
various key business areas such as: Customer Relationship Management,
Procurement, Production, Financial Accounting, Management
Accounting, Human Resources and Asset Management. The main big
idea about an ERP system, is that it does all of the above-mentioned
key business areas under a singular software system. A key advantage
of this is that real-time tracking and deep analysis can be done on
business operations effortlessly, and thus well-informed, data-backed
strategic management decisions can be made. (There are also other key
advantages, but we will cover them in the future.)
The old business management software (this includes our Club’s) prior to
the ERP movement typically have many different independent software
systems, supplemented by manual Excel spreadsheets and are clumsily
cobbled together to carry out business operations. The downside of this
situation is a serious loss of productivity on the whole, due to constant
manual intervention, and the inability to make accurate, data-backed,
strategic business decisions because the data analytics required would
simply take too long to manually cobble together.
PAGE 3 THE TANGLIN CLUB
The idea of an ERP system is not new.
The concept started and became
popular very quickly as early as the year
2000, and today, having an ERP system
is considered the minimum acceptable
standard bar required to properly and
responsibly run any business with an
annual revenue of $10 million and
upward. Our Club has missed the ERP
system boat by about 15 years. Today,
we have functional tasks or reports
that should take a few minutes or a
few hours in an ERP system, but instead
takes a few hours, days or weeks of
manual work to complete. We need to
play catch up.
I was looking through past documents
from the Information Technology (IT)
department, and came across the
mission statement of the IT Department,
set in 2005. And I quote, “The IT
Department’s mission is to install a
quality IT infrastructure to provide the
necessary functionality and information
to support management goals in
terms of operating efficiency, staff
productivity, and service levels to
Members.”
Since 2005 till now, we have not budged
an inch in the direction of the mission
statement. We need to get moving.
We will come back to you Members on
an ERP system re-proposition within the
year, taking into account the feedback
from Members on the ground. Please
stay tuned.
And enjoy our magazine.

General Manager’s Message
Dear Members
Charity Swim: HIGH TEN!
Topping our calendar highlights this month is the Club’s
10-hour charity swim – HIGH TEN! This Saturday, 9 July, the
Club and the Shaw-NKF-NUH Children’s Kidney Centre
(CKC) are joining hands to raise funds to give children
on dialysis the opportunity to participate in a sleepover
camp, among other programmes. I encourage you to
read the touching stories on page 28 and the charity
swim details on page 27. Please come and lend your
support to this worthy cause spearheaded by the
Swim Section.
Whilst on the subject of charity, well deserved
congratulations go out to the Dance Section for raising
$15,000 at their charity event, ‘Saturday Night Fever’. This
year, they out-performed their charity efforts from last
year. Please see page 6 for photographs that capture
the fun.
As American as Apple Pie!
Each month, we like to spin the globe to add a bit of
diversity and novelty to our usual F&B line-up. So, this
July, we move north from Mexico, to the United States
of America. As is our tradition, we are featuring Boston
Lobsters month-long, dished up three ways at the Tavern,
Fireplace and Terrace. Whilst over at Churchill’s, Sunday
Lunches take on an American theme. Favourites like
St Louis smoked BBQ baby back ribs, spicy BBQ Buffalo
wings, California cobb salad, pizzas, including Hawaiian,
beef strip loin, mini burgers, macaroni & cheese, New York
Cherry Cheesecake, and of course, apple pie! Sunday
Lunches at the Churchill Room are family-oriented, so
bring along the extended family.
Also at the Churchill Room, on the gourmet wine front,
we feature three excellent Californian labels from
Napa Valley and Sonoma – Beringer, Stags’ Leap and
Chateau St Jean, at our Californian Wine Dinner 14 July.
This is an excellent opportunity to enjoy 6 wines, canapés
and a 5-course meal, whilst entertained and enlightened
by the charismatic Simon Cant, Treasury Wine Estate’s
(TWE) Regional Manager. For those of you wishing to
meet some new Members, do ask to join our communal
table. July-long, all bars feature Beringer Founders’
Estate Chardonnay and Beringer Founders’ Estate
Cabernet Sauvignon.
Founding-year priced at $17.76, is Chef Eric’s one pound
American Cheese Burger, good for two! But if you have
worked up a solid appetite and are up for a challenge,
please take note of the Ultimate Burger Challenge on
page 16.
In the famed ‘Boston Tea Party’, merchants refused to
concede to taxation imposed by the British Parliament
and threw 342 chests of tea overboard. Month-long, in
our cheeky ode to the ‘Tea Party’, we’re starting our
own revolution with a not to be missed 1:1 English Tea
Set For Two offer at the Tea Room. This is available every
weekend in July, so gather your friends and family for a
little afternoon splurge. The pastry team is also serving
up lovely apple pies for $17.76, in honour of the USA’s
founding year.
July also sees us feature America’s newest friend, Cuba!
Guest-of-Honour, Ambassador Roberto Blanco Dominguez,
and Cuban band, Guantanamera, will be at our Cuban
Poolside Fiesta on 23 July to accompany the culinary
team’s Cuban buffet dinner. Rounded out by Havana Club
promotions, do plan to join us for this relaxing evening by the
pool. Please refer to page 18 for more information.
Introducing – Mooncakes!
We’re excited this year to unveil our inaugural Tang Yun
Mooncakes! From 1 July to 15 August, we are offering a
10% early bird discount, so do take some time to familiarise
yourself with our offerings, and order in advance to enjoy the
additional discount. As you can see from the back cover of
this magazine, the Mooncakes are encased in an elegant
scarlet ‘handbag’ box and are the perfect gift for friends,
family and business associates, especially with this being
Tanglin’s first ever Mooncakes in our 151-year history!
New $5 Happy Hour Menu
This July, we’re rolling out a new daily, 3.00pm to 6.00pm, Happy
Hour at the Tavern and Wet Bar. All drinks in this Happy Hour
menu will be priced at $5 each only, and there’s something
for everybody. Select from Tiger beer, spirits including vodka,
gin, rum, whisky, bourbon whisky, tequila, cocktails such as
shandy, spritzer, cosmopolitan, vodka martini, gimlet, whisky
sour, and wines including merlot and chardonnay.
Celebrating Singapore’s 51st Birthday
With the fast approaching 51st National Day, August sees
us shift our focus to all things Singaporean, from our ‘A
Taste of Singapore’ Wheelhouse buffet, to our sentimental
Singaporean ‘High Tea’, to our ‘Singapore Heritage Trail
Sunday Buffet Lunch’. We’ve included highlights in the pages
ahead, as you might wish to plan ahead.
A Word of Gratitude
On a final note, July marks the start of my third year at
Tanglin and I’d like to thank the General Committee for
offering me the opportunity to renew my contract. I’d also
like to thank the entire Tanglin Team for their incredible hard
work, commitment and support over these past two years.
Together, we’ve journeyed to bring the Club to a new level of
unprecedented Member engagement and we shall do our
very best to continue to do so.
Upwards and onwards!

FAMILY SPORTS DAY
3 April 2016
In early April, we showcased the Club’s Sports & Recreation Sections and their activities. The Tennis, Squash, Swimming,
Scuba, Bridge, Balut, Darts, Snooker, Lawn Bowls, and Golf Sections were represented, and it was an excellent opportunity for
Members to take an activity “test drive”. A big thank you to all those families that participated, and we hope you had a
fun-filled day with your family and friends!

DANCE SECTION RAISED $15K FOR CHARITY
The Dance Section’s charity event, ‘Saturday Night Fever’, on 7 May 2016 was fully booked with 120 diners. Eight children from
Cerebral Palsy Alliance Singapore (CPAS), with their own musical accompaniment, gave a good rendition of Abba’s “Chiquitita”
and CPAS’ composition, “Believe in Me, Believe in You”. Their performance touched many hearts and Members and guests
donated $15,000 to CPAS.
The party continued with a dance reflecting the theme of the event by dancers from Louis and Catherine Dance Studio. This
was followed by a mass ‘Saturday Night Fever’ workout from the audience on the dance floor. The resident band, Stephen Four,
with a 5th musician and DJ Kaze, provided the music for dancing. Many Members and guests commented that it was a most
enjoyable and touching evening.
This is the second time that the Dance Section has organised a charity event. Last year, a sum of more than $13,000 was raised
for CPAS.

“The food portions at the Club are quite big. I have a small appetite and wish you
would serve smaller portions.”
Good news – beginning July, small portions for selected Asian dishes are available
at the Wheelhouse. The dishes include Yeung Chow Fried Rice, Fried Hokkien
Mee, Prawn Noodles Soup, Szechuan Chicken, Thai Green Chicken Curry, Phad
Thai, and more. Enjoy!
“I saw some lockers near the Main Clubhouse car park the other day. What’s the
deal with those?”
These lockers are a Smart Locker Laundry Service by ‘My Laundry Box’. They
provide a 24/7 round-the-clock dry clean and laundry service powered by your
smartphone and an electronic locker collection system. Members are able to
send or collect their laundry at any time of the day or night, right here at the Club.
We hope that you will enjoy the convenience of this service. For more information,
please drop by the Front Desk or visit the ‘My Laundry Box’ page under ‘Services’
on our website (www.tanglinclub.org.sg/services/my-laundry-box.html). Please
note that the Club is not liable for any loss or damage incurred from the use of
‘My Laundry Box’.
“I understand that the resolution for the additional 11 guest rooms at Level 5 of the Sports & Recreation
Complex has been approved by the Membership in the recent Annual General Meeting. What’s the progress?”
The Library has just shifted, and we will start the demolition at Level 5 of the Sports & Recreation Complex in late July.
Renovation will then commence in August. Some noise will be expected during this time and we thank you for your
patience and understanding. For more updates, please email [email protected] to subscribe to our weekly
NewsBites e-newsletter, if you haven’t done so. Alternatively, you may visit the ‘News & Updates’ page on our website
(www.tanglinclub.org.sg/news-updates.html).
“What is the status of the parking trial? I heard it was permanent?”
Following the successful guest parking only at the Sports Complex trial, the 2015/16 General Committee has
determined its permanency. Members seeking guest parking should advise their guests’ names and vehicle registration
numbers, along with their name and membership number, to the Front Office. Simply SMS / Whatsapp 9011 0611 or
email [email protected].
Our Front Office team will confirm receipt of your email or text message during operating hours (7.00am to 11.00pm
daily). Given the availability of bays, we encourage you to reserve well in advance, to optimise your chances of securing
parking for your guest. As is the policy, a Member can register a maximum of 2 guest cars at any point. Please understand
that there is no guarantee that your guest will be granted a spot, as parking lots are available for guests on a first-come
first-served basis and upon availability.

rate, though considerably lower than most of our fellow
clubs, and significantly lower than the national average
4.0% (accommodation and food services industry), is
1.7%. This figure remains fairly consistent at Tanglin, but is
considerably lower than our 2010 figure of 2.4%; and this,
despite the growing on-the-job pressures and much higher
competition, is considered quite an achievement. The
bulk of our turnover (73%) is from the less than two years
bargainable cohort.
We thank you for your continued patience in this regard
and we shall keep you posted of any progress.
"If the Guest Rooms are going forward, where is the Hair
Salon going?"
As you can see, the island bar and kitchen counter have
been removed, and the half-height wall separating the
kitchen has also been demolished. Additionally, the flooring
has been sanded and re-varnished and the ceiling madegood. The lighting will be enhanced, the area will be
repainted, the kitchen counter replaced with a service
counter and food display chillers, and more power-points will
be installed among other small changes.
As referenced in the President's Message (March 2016
magazine), this area will shift to a self-serve, healthier concept
more in-line with Sports and Recreation.
We are still awaiting finalisation of some Variation Orders
(VOs), to establish how much of our budget remains of the
total $2.5M project. Once clear, we will finalise our Business
Centre plans and report back to you. We are targeting to
reopen Tangles this August.
“What is happening to our Tanglin Service! I see so many new
faces. What’s going on?”
Please accept our apologies for instances where we may
have let you down. As you may know, island-wide, the
hospitality industry is facing a rather significant labour crunch.
As a result, we are consistently shorthanded by at least 20
staff. Since we are at our limit with foreign workers, we are
unable to hire staff unless they are Singaporean. The industry
heavily competes for this rather small pool of candidates. As
such, we turn to agencies to provide casual labour. These
people are unfortunately, usually assigned for just one shift,
so they are not well informed about Tanglin’s operations
and as such, they can only perform basic duties. This group
is identified by “trainee” buttons. In the meantime, our fulltime staff are stretched, which no doubt leads to them being
more tired and perhaps at times, not at their best. We have
been brainstorming ways to make things better for you, and
our Team, and unfortunately, options are few.
We are working hard to retain our current talent. Our turnover
In view of the Guest Rooms approval, we will be relocating
the Hair Salon from Level 5 of the Sports Complex to the
Main Clubhouse Wheelhouse Function Room. The Salon
will benefit from the bigger, brighter and more accessible
location, where the restrooms are just nearby, as so often
requested by Members. We will keep you posted on the
Wheelhouse Function Room closure and subsequent Hair
Salon closure and re-opening.
“I commented in the Annual Member Survey that I hoped
the Club to be more children-friendly. Has anything been
done since?”
Thank you for your feedback – we hear you. Over the past
months, we have undertaken a more children-friendly
approach. For instance, we installed a lower handrail in
the changing rooms for children safety and added stools
in washrooms near the pool. With regards to dining options,
Tang Yun has been made considerably more childrenfriendly; children may dine in daily for lunch, and Friday,
Saturday and Sunday for dinner. Children may also dine
in the Fireplace during lunch on weekends. The Churchill
Room was made family-friendly for Sunday Lunch and it has
proven very popular. Post-renovation, children will be able
to dine in the new Tangles.
Ben & Jerry’s lovers will be thrilled to know that we’re
introducing the ice-cream at the Wheelhouse this July.
Order any item from the ‘Kids Favourites’ section and
top up $3.95 (U.P. $5.50) for a Ben & Jerry’s mini cup icecream. This National Day, bring your children and join
us for an interactive story-telling session at the Poolside.
Please refer to page 30 for more information. We also offer
complimentary Matinees, a well-stocked Children’s Library,
and the Playroom is with compliments. If you enjoyed last
year’s Children’s Carnival, we’re lining up the next one for
October. Do stay tuned.
The request to shift towards being more children-friendly
was highlighted to the General Committee (GC) as a key
takeaway from the Annual Member Survey, and the current
GC will be tasked to further deliberate steps to take.

BERINGER FOUNDERS’ ESTATE
CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2013
Origin: USA
Origin: USA
Tasting Notes: The Beringer Founders’
Estate Chardonnay is the perfect
combination of pear, apple and ripe
tropical fruit flavours, with a hint of citrus
and a classically round mouthfeel. This
Chardonnay will perfectly complement
a grilled chicken or fish, or stand up to a
rich risotto with its ripe, clean flavours and
lingering finish.
Tasting Notes: The wine is full bodied
with a dense smooth texture,
moderated soft tannins and low
acidity. There is some slight sweetness
as well, which most people will find
quite appealing. The wine is very fruit
forward with ripe flavours of blackberry
and currants, some plum, toast,
and vanilla. The finish is medium in
length with subtle amounts of cigar or
tobacco, and more mint.

MY LIFE AS A DIALYSIS AND TRANSPLANT PATIENT
By Mark Goh
I first started dialysis during JC1. Back
then I didn’t quite understand what
was happening to me. I was told that
my life would change overnight and “I
would not lead a normal life anymore”.
My kidneys had deteriorated to the
point where toxins were building up
quickly in my body and treatment
could no longer be delayed. In school
I felt lethargic and was not able to
concentrate in class. I was checked into
hospital and had to undergo surgery for
the insertion of a catheter required for
dialysis. I still remember the night before
the operation vividly. I prayed to God
to not let this happen to me. Morning
came and nothing had changed. The
operation went ahead as planned and I
started dialysis immediately after. It was
a tumultuous journey for me. I started
doing dialysis at home every night
after school. I had to be home by 7pm
every night to prepare for dialysis and
was not able to take part in strenuous
activities. After starting dialysis, my body
started to feel better and I was able to
start exercising lightly again. I was able
to participate in the Air-rifle Nationals
competition and I felt life was getting
back to “normal”. I was getting used to
this new routine of life.
As things got stable, we planned our
next course of action, which was a
transplant. After a preliminary work-up
was done and we found that my mother
was a suitable donor, it came time to
seriously consider the kidney transplant.
I was initially hesitant as it was a major
operation that involved not only me, but
my dear mother. I felt it was selfish of me
to put my mother at risk for the sake of
my own health. A transplant is something
I wanted but it is difficult thing to ask,
for so much, from someone. Organ
donation is best two-way; the recipient
needs it and the donor is willing to give
it. It was not easy making a decision as
a family but after much prayer, I felt at
ease and wanted to go through the
operation. If things went well, I would
have a new kidney and my life would
have new meaning. If things did not go
so well, my family would have paid a
great price. My human understanding
was inadequate and I really leaned on
God to guide me through this period.
Thanks to the doctors and the staff of
NUH and God, the operation was a
success. Since then I have completed
my university studies and have taken
part in the World Transplant Games. This
transplant has given me life beyond my
imagination.
I will never forget
the support that the
Children's
Kidney
Centre (CKC) has
given, and continues
to give, me. CKC has
allowed me to grow
as a patient and
has given me many
opportunities to payit-forward. One of
CKC’s social support
programmes is the
Annual Camp. In 2013,
together with a group of volunteers as well
as patients, we organised the camp and
have been doing so ever since. The camp
is meaningful to me as it is a place where
patients are able to be themselves and be
seen for who they really are. It has helped
me cope with my condition and allowed
me to channel my energy into helping
others. In the spirit of CKC and Professor Yap
Hui Kim (head of CKC), we aim to create
a place that encourages patients to not
only recover physically, but to grow to their
full potential and achieve their dreams. I
have been with the Camp for a few years
now and every year, their flame burns more
brightly. The patients have really grown and
are now helping and guiding their younger
peers through various stages in their life.
It is especially meaningful to me to be
able to give back to this community
which I have received much from; it is
meaningful to create a platform where
other patients like myself can contribute
to help make life a little better for
our friends.
EVEN IN ILLNESS, REWARDS ARE TO BE GAINED.
By Sarah Tan
Everything happens for a reason, and I would have been
better off without this “end-stage kidney failure”. I would have
been better off without the arsenal of medication. I would
have been better off without peritoneal dialysis.
It would have saved me and my family the
trouble, let alone the heavy financial burden.
Everything costs money and needless to say,
my illness, with its black hole of treatments and
medications, just piles on the costs.
But there must be a reason why I was born
with it and why my family has had to bear
this burden. During our times of difficulty, my
family and I have learnt to overcome obstacles
together as a unit. Moreover, in the process of
the treatments and programmes, I have forged
new friendships with people my age and made
friends with others who are dealing with the same condition. I
have built a wide network of support with other patients through
programmes such as the CKC Annual Camp and also the
Dreamcatchers programme. These other patients help me to see
that, despite our medical conditions, we can achieve great things
in our lives too.
I joined Dreamcatchers back in 2013
where I got to work with professional
photographers to express my creativity
through my hobby and passion,
photography. I also cultivated a unique
sense of style of my own. It was at that time
where I learnt public speaking skills which
helped to boost my self-confidence. Over
time, I have been given opportunities to be
the emcee for various events. I was a very
shy person but these opportunities and
friends I made through the programmes
helped me develop in areas which I never thought I could do.

In today’s multi-media world where many of our children are media and

their children draw lines of their own. Get plugged-in on the why and how to

treating the dying, and the next he was
a patient struggling to live. And just like
that, the future he and his wife had
imagined evaporated. When Breath
Becomes Air chronicles Kalanithi’s
transformation from a naïve medical
student “possessed”, as he wrote, “by
the question of what, given that all
organisms die, makes a virtuous and
meaningful life” into a neurosurgeon at
Stanford working in the brain, the most
critical place for human identity, and
finally into a patient and new father
confronting his own mortality.
What makes life worth living in the face
of death? What do you do when the
future, no longer a ladder toward your
goals in life, flattens out into a perpetual
present? What does it mean to have a
child, to nurture a new life as another
fades away? These are some of the
questions Kalanithi wrestles with in this
profoundly moving, exquisitely observed
memoir.
Paul Kalanithi died in March 2015, while
working on this book, yet his words live
on as a guide and a gift to us all. “I
began to realise that coming face to
face with my own mortality, in a sense,
had changed nothing and everything,”
he wrote. “Seven words from Samuel
Beckett began to repeat in my head:
‘I can’t go on. I’ll go on.’” When Breath
Becomes Air is an unforgettable, lifeaffirming reflection on the challenge of
facing death and on the relationship
between doctor and patient, from a
brilliant writer who became both.

TOUR DE SINGAPURA 2016:
30-DAY SPINNING CHALLENGE
During the final week of April, The
Tanglin Club's Tour de Singapura
zoomed into its final stage, with stage
winners Mark Andrew and Maryam
Sithawalla taking top honours in the
South zone, nabbing the last stage
winner's jersey and pushing towards
the overall prize.
In a fast and furious battle to the
finish line, the exciting conclusion of
the Tour de Singapura congratulated
overall winners Moiz Sithawalla and
Pippa Reid for winning the foursegment race. Both winners led
the pack with the greatest overall
wattage (power output) over a
distance of at least 70km/week
throughout all four weeks of the Tour,
and both received the coveted
yellow jerseys for their victories.
In a very close second place were male and female competitors Richard Coventry and Gill Reid, both finishing just a few watts
behind the Tour leaders, and closing out the podium in third place were Chew GH and Chan Hsiang Sui. All runners-up received
trophies and medals for their performances at the finale presentation event.
Also of note were mileage warriors Maryam Sithawalla and Richard Coventry, both of whom racked up the greatest cumulative
distance (total km) over the four-week event. Maryam dominated at 609km while Richard totalled 356km, and both were
handily rewarded with trophies commemorating their efforts.
It's never too early to start training for the 2017 Tour de Singapura – and the whole team at Tanglin hopes you'll join us for this
challenging and fun event next year!

If you have been considering learning Karate, why not join us for a
demonstration training session this July!

SPECIALISED PROGRAM – Have a personal goal in mind? Whether it
is bodybuilding, weight loss, strengthening of muscles, or to recover
from injury, your trainer will develop a specific program that will suit
your goal. The program will be customised especially for you and your
needs only!
TIME EFFICIENT WORKOUT – Time does not need to be wasted at the
gym. If you struggle to set aside time for working out, your trainer will
develop a program that you can get the most out of in the least
amount of time. Your trainer will teach and help you with the exercise
and routine, right by your side. This is excellent for busy working adults
or students preparing for the exams!
If you haven't worked out all your life or had
to stop for a few months or even a few years,
it's easy to get into the gym and start on the
elliptical machine, but what happens next?
Wanting to start but not having any clue of
how to use the equipment or machines that
are available, or feeling embarrassed with the
people around you? Not a problem. Today, we
are going to discuss the 5 benefits of Personal
Training that will help you to get started.
5
BENEFITS OF
PERSONAL
TRAINING
MOTIVATION – Having a trainer by your side will boost your morale
and push you to achieve your goals – and perhaps to even exceed
your expectations. Your trainer will be there by your side, cheering
you on, even when you are at your lowest. Your trainer will build your
confidence at the gym and encourage you to make health and
fitness as part of your lifestyle.
TECHNIQUE AND FORM – Many gym users often watch YouTube videos
or read magazines to learn how to exercise. These might be cheaper
alternatives, but they do not substitute having a trainer by your side,
paying attention to your movements and giving immediate feedback
on your technique and form. Your trainer will help you to develop
better form, improve posture, and increase your strength and motion
by teaching you how to use the correct muscles in certain movement
patterns. By doing so, you can achieve your goals faster and avoid
getting injured – which brings us to the next point.
INJURY PREVENTION – A trainer will guide you how to use the gym
equipment correctly and workout such that you will not hurt yourself.
Some people shy away from trying new equipment due to the fear of
getting injured. Others in the gym may try using equipment simply by
looking at how others do so, which risks injury. Avoid putting yourself in
such a situation and get a trainer who will assist you in achieving your
fitness goals.

Balut-Ten-Pin Bowling Section
April does tend to throw the occasional curve ball, and proved it again. The field was whittled down to 13 players due to travel,
tracking Saturn, latest issue of Fishing Illustrated, green dwellings, ‘Is there anyone out there?’, to name a few.
Zoeb Sadiq made a concerted effort to finish one obligation and made a mad dash to make it in time for the game. This
dedication to Balut paid off with him sweeping the total score board with 629 points. Chong Zhi Cheng meanwhile put his marker
down for the highest game score of the year with a 157 game. In the background, you know who got 4 baluts.
May brings the 1st round of the Inter-Club Balut annual thrash and the pounding starts at the Singapore Recreation Club. More
on that and the monthly game next time around, and yes, you can play Balut at home!

Billiards Section
The Billiards Section saw a very busy month in April with the Sports Family Day on Sunday, 3
April and our regular Billiards Section Night on Thursday, 21 April. The Section also travelled
to Penang and Ipoh for a couple of friendly matches with the Penang Club and the Royal
Ipoh Club. We will report on the trip as soon as we have the photos sorted!
The Sports Family Day was well attended with both Section Members and Non-Section
Members coming to play. With more than a dozen people in the room, it was certainly
bustling with activity! Mr Chay Kok Fun and Mr Mark Simpson (Convenor) were very much
involved in orientating the enthusiasts on the basics of cueing and playing the game.
Thank you everyone for your participation and support.
Our Billiards Month Section for April saw an amazing tie for the top place among Mr
Chong Zhi Cheng, Mr Ng Boon Keng and Mr Arun Desai. Dr Boon Keng was then declared
the winner as he had the highest handicap of the three. Good show!

BRIDGE OVERSEAS TRIP: BANDUNG & JAKARTA, INDONESIA
11 to 15 April
In April, 14 very excited ladies flew to Bandung en route Jakarta to see the famous volcano. Surrounded by the lush Parahyangan
mountains, Bandung is the third largest city of Indonesia and its nickname is Kota Kembang or Flower City – which it really is. The
Dutch and now residents of Jakarta visit Bandung for the cooler climate. Jyoti’s daughter Jingle got us very good deals at both
hotels.
On the next morning, we were driven to the
Natural Park of Tangkuban Parahu Mountain.
On arrival, we were met with a strong smell
of sulphur coming from the hot springs below.
To get down, we had to tread steep slippery
mountain slopes for over an hour. A few of
us barely made it even with the help of the
porters. Once down though, we felt a huge
sense of achievement and couldn't wait to
soak our legs in the hot springs. That evening,
many of us went for a full body massage for
just $10 each! After which, we proceeded to
a lovely restaurant in the hills overlooking a
valley for dinner.
The following day, 9 of us continued our journey by car to Jakarta to meet with our friend Catherine Cardyn who had relocated
there and introduced us to the Belanda Indonesia Bridge Club. The Belanda bridge members use the private home of a National
player on Thursdays for cost reasons. Our ladies had a very challenging time playing against some ex-National and International
tournament players. The director was a highly qualified gentleman. Sonia and Aisha came 2nd and Joyti and Deepa 4th.
Well done ladies, and more importantly, you represented the Tanglin Club Bridge Section. It was a very enjoyable time and
hopefully we can return their gracious hospitality when they visit Singapore. These trips also help to forge and strengthen
friendships and expose us to more challenges when we play against other clubs. We hope more of our Bridge Members will join
us on future trips.

During April and May, the Choir had a string of performances. These included:
• An Acapella performance (where the group sings without any instrumental accompaniment) in the Chinese Restaurant. A first
for the choir and diners may have been surprised but the songs were well-received.
• A Mother’s Day Celebratory performance with a medley of songs sung at the brunch in the Churchill Room. We were happy to
charm and delight with our music and make the day even more special for the exceptional woman in everyone’s life.
• The Choir provided entertainment at the Committee and Sub-Committee Appreciation Cocktail Party and was delighted to
meet a request for an Encore!
The Tanglin Choir is now in its 4th year and is always looking for Members to join. It is a non-auditioned Choir and everyone is
welcome to try us out before committing. Don’t worry if you’re not sure of your singing abilities – this is very much a mixed ability
group with section leaders to help out learners and newcomers. It doesn't matter if you don’t read music, or think you may not
get the tune, melody or pitch right the first time. It's all about learning, practising and enjoying singing!
Don’t let it bother you if anyone ever told you or you have the opinion that you can’t sing. It’s just an urban myth that the world
is divided into singers and non-singers. As someone rightly said, “If you can talk, you can sing. If you can walk, you can dance.”
To anyone who is willing to have fun, enjoy good company, sing regularly and perform from time to time, do join the Tanglin Choir
Section. You would like to sing with us? Congratulations! You’re in! No questions asked. Simple as that. Easy right?
If you still need any more convincing, do visit us any Wednesday at the Theatrette from 7.30pm to 9.30pm!

FRIENDLY DARTS:
TANGLIN CLUB VS SERANGOON GARDENS COUNTRY CLUB
On 11 June, The Tanglin Club Darts Section ladies had an enjoyable friendly
game of darts with the ladies of the Serangoon Gardens Country Club (SGCC).
It was extremely rewarding and motivating to watch skilful darts of the SGCC
players as well as our home team.
The competition kicked off with both singles and doubles matches. It was fun
meeting up and enjoying a game of darts with all the ladies, especially sporting
players who are eager to play darts, talk about darts, and, in general, share the
addiction to darts. Yes, it does seem that positive addiction occurs as a result
of continuously hurling pointed objects at a fixed target, retrieving them, and
hurling them again.
Most importantly, we welcome our darts players to take part in matches with
much keenness and enthusiasm, in order to further improve the competitive
levels of our home team.
Congratulations, to our only overall winner Esther Ling for her outstanding
performance. Mavis Light, Eunice, Katherine, Lilian and Sepalika did their best
to secure one set of each game.
Congratulations to all the
winners!
Many thanks to all the Darts
Members for their support
in making the afternoon a
joyous occasion. We are
also thankful to the Sports
Section Team for making
our games always fun and
rewarding.

COLONIAL CUP
APRIL IN-HOUSE GAME
Last year an announcement was made with respect to the 2016 closure of
Jurong Country Club. Our 20th April in-house game gave Members a final
opportunity of enjoying a round on the quite recently revamped Jurong
course.
Due to increased demand for Jurong green time, we were limited to
ten flights and a good mix of ladies and gents, new and familiar Section
Members filled all the slots.
After a bright start, the sky turned very grey and stormy. This inevitably led
to participants having to take time out for some sheltered camaraderie.
During the extended break, a morale boost was provided by the Jurong
Management, with a generous offer to provide floodlights up to 8.30pm.
This arrangement ensured the opportunity of a complete round for all.
The Colonial Cup is a match held annually
amongst The Tanglin Club, British Club and The
American Club. This year’s event was hosted by
the British Club at Tanah Merah Country Club’s
Garden Course. Following a morning storm, the
weather cleared just in time and the match was
able to proceed.
The format was match play with pairs from each
Club playing against a pair from one of the other
Clubs – not as complicated as it sounds! There
were six pairs representing Tanglin Club with eight
matches in total. Most of the games were hard
fought with several going to the last green to be
decided. Of the eight matches, The Tanglin Club
won four, the British Club three and The American
Club one, allowing The Tanglin Club to win the
Cup lost last year to the British Club.
Winning combinations for Tanglin Club were David
White/Gopal Banerji, Chris Steffans/Raymond
Tan, Alex Eow/Phua Swee Leng and Hemant
Pathania/Lawrence Ang, who played the last
flight that brought home the point to win the
Cup! Hugh Hoyes Cock/Paul Healy lost on the last
hole and the German combination of Wolfgang
Hollerman/Jurgen Martiens succumbed to very
strong American Club opposition.
A delicious curry buffet and good camaraderie
among the teams back at the British Club
rounded off a very pleasant and successful day
for the Tanglin golfers. Thanks to all those who
participated in the match.
PAGE 41 THE TANGLIN CLUB
Following the resumption of play, the ensuing fine weather and efficiently
drained course provided ideal golfing conditions for the stableford based
event to be fully enjoyed.

toast and be toasted while overlooking the still floodlit elevated eighteenth
green.

This year The Tanglin Club hosted the annual Claymore
Cup where squash players from The Tanglin Club and The
American Club meet up on a Saturday afternoon and play a
tournament. The format is singles game best of three games
to 15 American scoring. Looking at the line up the competition
was always going to be a relatively close affair and so it
proved with some great matches over the afternoon.
However, eventually The American Club prevailed and so for
the first time, The Tanglin Club has ceded the Claymore Cup
– a cup which had its home at Tanglin since the competition
began, but this gives an incentive to bring it back next year!
Many thanks to the Tanglin sports staff for helping to organise
the event and a special thank you to Puneet Charda who was
the main organiser, and great thanks to all who participated
to make it another great day. After all, everyone enjoyed The
Tanglin Club’s hospitality with the traditional curry and beer
rounding off the day with a social evening.

FAREWELL PARTY
Over the weekend of 30
April to 1 May, a group
of
Section
Members
travelled to Bangkok to
play in the Annual Jumbo
Doubles
Tournament
hosted at the regal Royal
Bangkok Sports Club.
Section Members competed hard and heavily, both on the
court and off. From playing numerous rounds of golf right there
steps from the Doubles Court, to admiring the ceiling that
boasts of fellow Section Member Sayen Desai, to witnessing
the launching off of Section Members on motorbikes at full
speed – it was the usual peak of the Section's tour schedule!
One particularly enthralling tournament match saw an all
Tanglin pairing with Peter 'Chaps' Rogers and partner Don
Hanna battling it out, down to the final point, down to the final
frame winner, against Glenn Bryce and Anthony Rawlinson.
Nice!
So now that we are back in the beer garden and away from
the dangerous Soi boys, it’s time to start thinking about the
next trip, which likely is the Raintree Club in Kuala Lumpur in
September.
The Squash Section organised a leaving party for Graham
Hunter who, sadly, is departing these shores to retire back in
the UK. Graham is a well-liked Member who enjoys his squash
and eagerly participated in as many events as he could.
The Section organised a friendly doubles match early in the
evening where a good number of Members turned up. The
evening turned out to be a great success with a considerable
amount of refreshments consumed with the accompanying
barbeque and went well into the night. We presented
Graham with a tankard duly inscribed along with a blownup group photo for him to remember us. The Section will miss
Graham and his wife and we wish them all the good luck and
fortune for the future.

victory over the Tanglin Tigers in Beta division,
so we knew that we would have some strong
opposition. However, I am pleased to say that
after a hard-fought competition, The Tanglin Club
won by 69 games to 53.
On behalf of all the players, I would like to thank
Lilian and Esther for organising the courts and
refreshments, and Helen for initiating the invitation
and taking care of the pairings on the day.
Everyone really enjoyed the tennis and the lovely
snacks provided by the Club after the match.

CHEN REPEATS IN NOTABLE YEAR FOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
This year was an amazing year for the
Club Championships. There was immense
interest in the Mixed Doubles (17 pairs) and
if you looked up and down each of the five
draws, they were all family pairings. Brothersister. Mother-daughter. Uncle-nephew.
The turnout (more than 100 individuals)
exceeded our expectations by a wide
margin.
Rob Chen won the Men's Singles for the third year in a row, beating Claus Oldager
6-3, 6-1 in the final, while defending champion Anne Tan fell to Joanne Koh 6-2
and 6-1 in the women's final. The times they are a-changin', Bob Dylan famously
sang, and this year, that rang true.
Former champion Mark Fernandes lost in three tough sets to young Joshua Cheng
while Chris Forbes went down to Joshua Lake in the quarters, also in three sets.
Joshua Lake then pushed Claus all the way, falling in a third set super-tiebreak in
the semis. The junior print was all over. They held their own against the vets, and
even the elder statesman of the juniors (Ryan Ng) nearly reached the final in the
Men's Doubles.
Claus didn't leave 2016 empty handed though. He and partner Craig Doel downed defending champions Taco Portengen and
Dave Ng 6-3 and 6-2 in the final. The women's final was won by Cathy Leow and Suzanne Brown.
In the Mixed Doubles, Sub-Committee Members Leong Shieh Yen and Soo Kui Jien won a tense encounter over Suzanne and
Vincent Lam 6-4, 2-6, and 7-6 (5) to emerge champions. Congratulations all.
There are a number of pictures of the matches on the 40XV page as well as The Tanglin Club Tennis Section page on Facebook.
I'd like to personally thank Kui Jien, Lilian, Renato, Ken and his team at 40XV, Cielito, James and Mark James in making this year's
Club Championships the best yet.
