After clearing immigration/customs and collecting our luggage, we will begin our journey up the Judean mountains to Jerusalem. Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, is famous for its timeless beauty and was once considered the center of the world. As you navigate your way through this amazing city, you will pass some of Israel's most notable landmarks, such as the Knesset (Israel's parliament), the State Supreme Court and the Hebrew University - home to many Nobel Prize winners. Overnight King David Hotel SUN OCT 30 Jerusalem B/L We will begin an unforgettable day atop the Mount of Olives where we can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view of the Old City, the Temple Mount, the Golden Gates, and the many churches, synagogues and mosques located within the walled city. Next, we proceed to the picturesque Garden of Gethsemane – the home of the impressive Church of All Nations. We enter the Old City ancient wall through the Lions Gate and walk along part of the Via Dolorosa believed by many to be the route Jesus followed as he carried his cross to Calvary. One of Jerusalem's incredible sites is next to visit, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher is situated on the Hill of Golgotha (skull hill), once an execution location outside the city walls. According to Christian gospels, and compatible to archeological discoveries, this is the site of Jesus' crucifixion, burial and resurrection. Our route takes us past the colorful bazaar to the Jewish Quarter with its Cardo – Jerusalem's main thoroughfare during the Roman and Byzantine eras. Descending into the lower city, we'll view the Temple Mount and the golden-topped Dome of the Rock and the El-Aqsa Mosque. With its stunning blue and gold ceramic tiles, this amazing shrine built in the late 7th century is considered the third holiest site in Islam. We continue to the Western Wall, the holiest site in the Jewish world because it is believed to have been closest to where the Holy Ark once stood. Overnight King David Hotel MON OCT 31 Jerusalem B/L Today’s adventure will be spent in the new part of the city where we visit the remarkable Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial. This museum is dedicated to documenting the history of the Jewish people during World War II, emphasizing each victim’s experience through original artifacts, survivor testimonies and personal possessions. This unique perspective is presented in a sprawling complex of tree-studded walkways that lead to museums, exhibits, archives, monuments and memorials. Leaving Yad Vashem, we’ll navigate our way to one of Jerusalem’s landmarks, the Shrine of the Book – housing the world famous Dead Sea Scrolls - the oldest biblical manuscripts in the world, as well as rare early medieval biblical manuscripts. Next, we proceed to the Second Temple Era model of Jerusalem - an intricate, 1:50 reconstruction of the city’s topography and architecture before the destruction of the Temple. This evening we will attend the Night Spectacular – an extravangaza Sound & Light Show at the Tower of David Fortress. Zion while entering the Old City of Jerusalem through Zion Gate. We will visit the site of the Upper Room of the Last Supper, where according to tradition Jesus’ last meal with his disciples and the descent of the Holy Spirit took place. Next, it’s on to the Dormition Abbey, a massive yet serenely beautiful structure topped by a high domed bel tower, a conical dome and corner towers. According to the tradition, this Benedictine basilica is built over the place where Mary fell asleep. We continue to St. Peter in Galicantu Church and Caiaphas’ House before continuing to Bethlehem. Upon arriving in Bethlehem, the birthplace of David and Jesus, you will tour the Church of the Nativity. Since its completion around 330 A.D., the church has undergone numerous repairs and additions. Be sure to look through the trap doors in the wooden floor to see the original mosaic tile floor below. The church is also known for its low Door of Humility that prevented anyone from entering without bowing, and its grotto, which is esteemed as the birth site of Jesus. We will conclude the day by visiting Shepherds’ Fields before returning to Jerusalem. Overnight King David Hotel WED NOV 2 Galilee B/L/D Today, we embark upon the Regent Seven Seas Explorer and continue our exploration of this wonderful land. Leaving memorable Jerusalem behind, we will drive along the Jordan River Valley to the Land of the Galilee. This captivating full day tour allows you to experience for yourself the historic and stunning scenery of the places where it is believed Jesus lived, preached and performed his miracles. Arriving at the Sea of Galilee our first stop will be Tabgha, where Jesus multiplied the loaves and fishes. Soaking in the atmosphere of this site, you can almost imagine yourself amongst the crowd on the Mount of Beatitudes where he preached the famous Sermon on the Mount. Traveling on, our coach will bring us to Capernaum. Located on the beautiful shores of the Sea of Galilee, this is considered the center of Jesus’ ministry while he was living in this area. During our visit here, we will see the ruins of an ancient synagogue where a lovely mosaic floor was recently discovered. Following a busy morning, we’ll enjoy a leisurely lunch before heading off along the panoramic seashore to the Yardenit baptismal sight where the River Jordan separates from the Sea of Galilee. In this naturally scenic and symbolic setting, pilgrims from around the world come to perform baptismal ceremonies. On your relaxing ride to the pier in Haifa, we can view Mount Tabor, the traditional site of the Transfiguration where Jesus appeared to his disciples in radiant light while speaking with Moses and Elijah. Overnight onboard the Explorer THU NOV 3 Western Galilee B/L/D Our tour starts with a picturesque drive along the shores of the inviting Mediterranean Sea as we make our way to Caesarea Maritime. This ancient port city was built by Herod the Great on the ruins of an ancient anchorage known as Stratton’s tower. Named in honor of King Herod’s Roman patron, Augustus Caesar, the city became the capital of Roman and Byzantine Palestine. This marvelous ancient city boasts an impressive Roman Amphitheatre where performances are still held today, an impressive Byzantine street, aqueduct and restored Crusader fortifications, along with other artifacts. The once grand city, whose remnants are still regally poised on the edge of the brilliant blue waters of the Mediterranean, will no doubt leave you with many lasting memories. Our relaxing trip back to Haifa includes a stop at Mount Carmel where we will enjoy a magnificent view of Haifa Bay, the golden dome of Haifa’s Baha’I Shrine and Acre in the distance.
