Michael McBride PPA COUNCILMAN Terry Winslow SUPPLIER REPRESENTATIVE Dave Fortina FELLOWSHIP CHAIRPERSON JoAnn Deyo HISTORIAN Jeff Funk With utmost appreciation I want to say thank you to the board of directors and the members of PPN. My career in photography would not have been the same without PPN and I have grown so much as a business owner and as a photographer just by serving on the board. I would also like to thank my husband for his love and support during my time on the board. You have always made me want to be a better person, thank you for pushing me to be my best. And most of all, I thank God for the talents, opportunities and people he’s put in my life. I’m so grateful. PPN is headed in an exciting direction with visible changes! With several new board members come new ideas and renewed sense of pride for this organization and how we can help fellow photographers in Nebraska. With conference locations of Grand Island and Columbus, PPN will reach new audiences and keep learning opportunities fresh and exciting. By adding several more Focus Workshops, PPN Studio Tours, and our 2nd annual Balance Retreat we will all have more opportunities to gain insight and meet new friends. I would like to encourage anyone who feels called to be a leader in this industry to start here. Like any journey, it can be rocky at times but in the end, the memories and life-long friendships made along the way make it all worth while. In gratitude, Sarah Greder F.Ph. PPN President 2015 4 5 ANNUAL PPN COMMITTEE REPORTS SUPPLIERS TO THE INDUSTRY T he Ethics Chairman is a position that you really wish to have be an inactive one. I am happy to say that there have been no complaints presented to the Ethics Committee for the year. ETHICS CHAIRPERSON J. MICHAEL McBRIDE That must mean that everybody is on good behavior. However I remain dedicated to anyone that has issues that would require the review of PPN membership code of ethics. In the meantime play nicely and “All the Best”. M.Photog.,Cr.,D.F.Ph. Dave has been a long-time member of PPN. At the age of 14, he began working for his father at Calandra Camera Co and his passion for photography has only grown from there. He had a short stint as a photographer in the early 70’s until opening a store, Rockbrook Camera in 1975. The first Rockbrook was humble and small in Rockbrook Village before moving to the larger building they are currently in (since 1991). Then they opened a second location in Lincoln and also a 3rd at Legacy in Omaha about 7 years ago. Dave has been married to his wife, Susan, for 35 years and they have two daughters: Chloe, 27, who lives in San Francisco and Desiree who lives in New York and will be getting married this fall. 7 ANNUAL PPN COMMITTEE REPORTS 2014-15 DEGREE AWARDS DIAMOND FELLOW of PHOTOGRAPHY Jeff Bauman Jessica Galaska Jeremy Wieczorek ASSOCIATE FELLOW of PHOTOGRAPHY Stacy Ideus Sophia Johnsen PPA COUNCILMAN TERRY WINSLOW Cr.Photog.,CPP,Hon.F.Ph.,D.S.D. terr [email protected] The 2015 PPA council met at Imaging USA in Nashville. The business of the day consisted of the election of 2 members to the Board of Directors. Mike Fulton, TX was re-elected and Jeffrey Dachowski, New Hampshire was elected as a new member. We then moved on to complete a year long study of updating the bylaws. For a number of years the board and management team have increasingly been running into problems with day by day operation of PPA due to the outdated framework of the bylaws. With the guidance of PPA’s legal representatives, the bylaws were broken into the actual bylaws and procedures to more fully comply with the Delaware laws governing our articles of incorporation. This move makes the day to day operation more fluid and responsive to challenges that arise. The changes were approved as presented with some grammar and spelling changes. The financial report indicated while the PPA investments were not quite as robust as 2013, PPA was able to direct nearly 12 million dollars towards the “Find a Photographer” and “See the Difference” marketing programs. Much of that sum was directed at target markets such as The Knot and related print, blog and social media advertising. Logging on to the PPA website will allow you to see the video and print programs that are currently underway. While you are there visiting, be sure to create or update your personal profile to fully take advantage of the widespread, and expanding advertising being undertaken. This is how some of your membership dollars are being used so take part in it. PPA has now partnered with Photovision and most of their library is available to view streaming online free of charge! 8 There is a great stockpile of useful information there. In addition, there are the PPAedu videos. This program lets you set up your own personalized learning program with informational videos about many subjects and methods, again, free of charge with your PPA membership. The day’s program ended with the transfer of chairs on the board including our new President, Michael Timmons. And now with “another hat” I want you to be sure to contact me or Vance or log on to http://www.ppa.com if you have any questions or interest in the Certification Program. [email protected] 2015 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS SOUL ROAD TRIP WITH JEFF JOHNSON Bob Alberts PPN - PPA AFFILLIATE SCHOL ARSHIP Jessica Galaska - $250 12 ou may be asking yourself ‘what’s all this talk about scholarships? What does it all mean?’ Well, I’m here to tell you what it all means. Every year the Professional Photographers of Nebraska board of directors have the responsibility to award several scholarships to our members. Each scholarship awarded is intended for our members to use to further their education in photography. After all, that is one of the major reasons why you’re a member of this organization...to learn, right? Each scholarship is different; some are to be used for a specific education event and some are used to study with your photographer of choice in the state of Nebraska. You can think of this as FREE MONEY toward learning and who doesn’t like free money?! PP of N will be awarding the “PPA Affiliate Scholarship”, which is a $250 scholarship to be used toward any PPA affiliated program. An example of a PPA affiliated program would be Imaging USA. Oh yeah, how do you win? All you need to do is fill out the scholarship application and tell us why you should win. The scholarships are awarded by a selection process or sometimes even by a drawing. Learning is one of the most important parts of being a member of PP of N so we encourage everyone to fill out this application. Good Luck next year everyone! This was truly a team effort and I’m so proud of how well we all worked together. And a HUGE thanks to the Print Crew for working so hard to get our awards presentation finished for the banquet. What an awesome crew! And a big congratulations to Bob Alberts for receiving the National Award. What an amazing honor. I, along with many others, tried to hold back tears when we saw your reaction to the news. That moment was priceless! It was nice to bring the conference back towards central Nebraska. Bowling provided great laughs and as usual, the hospitality room did not disappoint. But more importantly, we got to learn from some of the best in the state and industry! Kearney locals, Rutheah and Jess taught us about newborns and weddings…shooting on location with live clients! Brian Bear provided an opportunity for us to learn and sharpen our skills, Jessica Edwards was spot on with her pricing and marketing for seniors! The three wise men helped us get back to the important basics of our craft. And last but not least, Jeff Johnson took us into his world of landscapes and Soul Roadtrips. It was quite a wellrounded conference! In the future, please be sure to let us know of your ideas and if you’d like to volunteer to be a part of the conference, we’d love to have you! This award is given to the highest scoring photographer of the year. Master or Non-Master from Nebraska. Duis was a band teacher from Kimball who became interested in photography and decided to pursue it as a career. He operated a studio in Sidney, NE along with his wife, who became his retoucher and finisher. Being very active in PPN, he was a board member in the 1950’s and worked hard during his active years helping wherever needed. He was the first Master in the state and served as secretary for the prestigious Camera Craftsman of America; one of only 40 members. He taught at Winona for 3 years and printed all of his own work. He loved the control he could have over the b&w image. Alvin Duis died in 1967 after having been of real service to this profession and PPN. The National Award is provided by the PPA to National, Regional, and International affiliated associations which confer this special honor in recognition of outstanding service to professional photography performed by an individual usually in the association’s region. Recipients are selected by the affiliated association. Usually awarded at PPN Spring Conference. ................................................................ From his beginnings, working in his father’s studio [Arnold Studio], he rose to own and operate the family business before selling it to help build a lab business. He served as the President of PPN and received the National Award in 1969. In addition, he received an Honorary Fellow of Photography and was active in several civic organizations as well. Because of his willingness to share his wealth of knowledge in a quickwitted style, the Tony Witchers Award was renamed in 1990 and is presented to the best portrait of show. Virgil Pitstick Award Long before PPN was formally chartered, Virgil Pitstick (of Nebraska City) was helping young photographers get started in the business --- one of the purposes of our present-day organization. He held meetings and demonstrations in his studio just because he enjoyed helping people do what he loved so much: photography. Because of this desire to see new people succeed and excel, the Virgil Pitstick Award is given to the Novice of the Year based on total print score of a photographer in his/her first or second year entering print competition and who has been in the business of photography less than 5 years. ................................................................ ................................................................ Even today, most of us have our roots in portraiture and there is a consistant danger of overlooking talent in other areas of photography. For this reason the President’s Award, honoring outstanding achievement in a non-portrait photograph, is a very special tribute. ‘Fallen’ Les Hassel Memorial Award ................................................................ He faithfully served as President of both Nebraska and Heart of America organizations. Among his many accomplishments were: Master of Photography, Degree of Photographic Crafsman, and Nebraska Diamond Fellow. He was deservedly selected Photographer of the Year twice and Top Master eight times! None of these honors, however, meant as much to Les as the two National Awards with which he was recognized by his peers. He especially enjoyed helping newcomers with their print competition and welcoming them to our organization. He would be especially proud to have us present this award in his honor. Given to the highest scoring Non-Master print of show. ................................................................ 27 2015 PRINT COMPETITION RESULTS 4x4 AWARDS This award is given to those whose prints ALL score 80 or above. 4 prints = 4 credits This award is designated by a special pin.
