Must–do monuments
One of the most recognized monuments in the world, the Eiffel
Tower attracts more than 6 million visitors each year. The views
from uppermost platforms are best an hour before sunset.
Visiting Napoleon’s Arc de Triomphe should also top your list.
The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier beneath the Arch honors those
killed during WWI, and the eternal flame honors those killed in
both World Wars.
Île-de-la-Cité: The birthplace of Paris
The birthplace of Paris and the site of its most significant church
— the Cathédrale Notre-Dame — Île-de-la-Cité has become a kind
of pilgrimage site. Cross the footbridge to Île-St.-Louis to stroll its
charming residential neighborhood.
4
Must-see museums
Originally a royal palace, the Louvre now houses such legendary
works as the Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, “Venus de Milo”,
and “Winged Victory”. Spend some time in the Jardin des Tuileries
just outside the museum.
The second-most important museum in Paris, the Musée d’Orsay is
a work of art itself. The transformed railroad station holds an
impressive collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionistic
paintings.
Walks to take
Paris is, above all, a pedestrian city. St.-Germain-des-Prés in the
Latin Quarter is lined with famous cafés, where intellectuals still
meet to discuss the issues of the day. Continue to Montparnasse,
once home to expatriate literati such as Ernest Hemingway.
Trek up the hill in Montmartre, also an artist’s haunt, past the
Moulin Rouge, and on to Sacré-Coeur. You will be rewarded with
wonderful views.
Finally, be sure to take the most famous walk of all: Along the
Champs-Elysées.

The eternal allure of Paris
The Left Bank, south of the Seine and cradle of the Sorbonne, is
considered the center of intellectual and artistic life.
e
e
It’s the most visited destination in the world — a city of lights and romance,
high cuisine and high art, a simple baguette with cheese. Below are a few suggestions to start you on your way.
Right Bank versus Left Bank?
The Right Bank falls north of the Seine River — home to the
Champs-Elysées, the Louvre, and the artistocratic neighborhood of
Le Marais.

The French Riviera
6 days/5 nights from
1119
$
Complete with a car, this package
encourages you to roam the most
alluring stretch of coastline in Europe.
Cascading villages
and seaside promenades
The Riviera stretches for 125 delicious miles along the
Mediterranean Sea in southeastern France. Shielded by the
Alps, the region basks in warmth and sunshine year
round. Here, hillside villages cascade in pastel colors
toward the sea.
• Roundtrip midweek airfare from
New York to Nice on Air France
The quality of light in the Riviera has long attracted
painters and sunworshippers. While paintbrushes are
optional, be sure to pack your bikini.
• 5 nights hotel accommodation in
Nice, Cannes, or Monte–Carlo,
including service charges and Value
Added Tax (VAT)
Nice
Perhaps it is 300 days of sunshine per year that cause the
Niçois to be so friendly. With its charm and casual
lifestyle, Nice has attracted many artists, including Chagall
and Matisse.
• Continental, buffet, or full American
breakfast daily (determined by hotel selected)
• 5-day Hertz rental car
Photo credit: Maison de la France/Thierry Daniel
Cannes
One word captures Cannes: Glamour. Climb the famous
stairs of the Palais des Festivals, where the Cannes Film
Festival is held; stroll the seaside Promenade la Croisette;
or sunbathe on the beaches fashion designer Coco Chanel
made famous.
Monte–Carlo
Also twenty minutes from Nice, Monte–Carlo — a mere
three-quarters miles square — actually resides in the
Principality of Monaco. Most come for the gambling, the
glitz, and the yearly Grand Prix. The rococo Monte–Carlo
Casino is a must-see.
Grasse
Witness the entire perfume-making process — from petal
to drop — at a number of perfumeries. Three-quarters of
the world’s essences are distilled in Grasse from the
abundant lavender, jasmine, and other regional flowers.
Menton
When you think of Menton, think of lemons. The warmest
place in France, the city grows lemons in profusion —
and even holds a yearly lemon festival. In this lovely
seaside village, particularly along the promenade du Soleil,
it’s always a “walk in the sun.”
Additional areas of interest in the French Riviera include
Antibes, Juan-les-Pins, and St.-Paul de Vence.
7
Provence
Land of lavender and light
You, too, could spend a year in Provence. Its sublime light
has attracted painters for more than a century. You are
likely familiar already with this lavender landscape of Van
Gogh and Cézanne from their paintings.
Marseille
Founded by Greeks more than 2,500 years ago, Marseille
is the oldest city in France and one of the liveliest ports in
the world. Visit the colorful Vieux Port (Old Port) and
sample competing versions of the city’s classic fish stew:
bouillabaisse.
Avignon
This walled medieval city is one of the most interesting
and beautiful in all of Europe. Visit the formidable Palais
des Papes (Palace of the Popes), where the supremacy of
Rome was nearly overturned in the 14th century.
6 days/5 nights from
1039
$
Explore the irresistible treasures of Provence,
from fields of lavender to Roman ruins.
• Roundtrip midweek airfare from
New York to Marseille on Air France
• 5 nights hotel accommodation in
Provence, including service charges
and Value Added Tax (VAT)
• Continental, buffet, or full American
breakfast daily (determined by hotel selected)
• 5-day Hertz rental car
Photo credit: Maison de la France/FAURE Daniel
Perhaps more famous are the ruins of the 12th century
pont St.–Bénézet, which juts into the Rhône. This is the
bridge of the well-known children’s rhyme, “Sur le pont
d’Avignon, l’on y danse, l’on y danse,” and also a
UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Gordes
This hilltop village is one of the most beautiful in France.
Its white-stone houses spiral upward to the stunning castle
and church. Outside, soak in panoramic views of the
Lubéron Mountains; inside, visit the Pol Mara Museum,
which features works by the contemporary Flemish
painter.
You can visit St. Paul’s Monastery, where the painter convalesced after cutting off his left ear. Although his cell is
not open, the Romananesque chapel and cloisters are
worth the trip.
8

Saint-Rémy-de-Provence
Discover authentic Provençal living in this blissfully quiet
village located at the base of the Alpilles Mountains. Here,
the market is truly local, the old men play boules, and the
light falls over the landscape as beautifully as it did in Van
Gogh’s day.
