Yet few of its many fans realize that it actually began five years earlier in western New York. In those days, we presented many concerts, just as we do today. But there was a major difference: the audience seats were mostly empty. We were in a remote, rural area of the state, and no matter how much we tried, the concert hall never filled. Seeing so many empty seats was rather discouraging to the musicians who had worked so hard to present great performances. One day my phone rang. It was Brent Wilcoxson, asking if we might consider moving our festival to Winona Lake, Indiana. I had an immediate question: “Will people show up at our concerts?” arts and entertainment Every year, thousands of visitors come to Kosciusko County for the variety of performing arts activities offered. Discover our professional symphony orchestra, or enjoy a free outdoor concert in one of our parks. For details on the performing arts activities in Kosciusko County, visit livewellinthemoment.com. He assured me that they would, and soon our Board of Directors decided to make the big move. Still, I remained skeptical, at least on the topic of the size of the anticipated audience. Imagine my astonishment when, at our first Winona Lake concert in 2002, I looked out from the stage to see hundreds of people waiting for the downbeat! I could hardly believe my eyes. Their response? They cheered and cheered. When the performance was over, we were given a long standing ovation. It was amazing, and very reassuring to me. The MasterWorks Festival had found its true home. Each summer, now we see between ten and twelve thousand seats filled with exuberant music lovers. In 2004, the entire office staff (now at 15 year-round workers) moved to Winona Lake. We began a new concert venue, the Second Sunday Series, which also performs in Winona Lake. A few years ago, I began conducting the Symphony of the Lakes, which has grown every season. Again, the audiences continue to be large, enthusiastic, and very supportive. I am grateful for that phone call from Brent Wilcoxson. It has changed my life, and the life of this community, as well. Patrick Kavanaugh, Artistic Director of the MasterWorks Festival and the Symphony of the Lakes (left page) MasterWorks Festival, (right page, top to bottom) Festivals, Symphony of the Lakes, Friday Evening Performing Arts Series (Gary Nieter) 2 | livewellinthemoment.com 574-269-6090 • 800-800-6090 | 3 In the summer of 1996, I was hired for my second season of shows as an actor at the Wagon Wheel Theatre. There was a renewed energy and sense of purpose to our work because it was Roy Hine’s first year as Artistic Director. He assembled a fantastic cast and crew, and turned us loose on a season of shows that was a mix of classics that are beloved to audiences and exciting new works that actors and designers live for. Among those shows was a farce called Lend Me A Tenor. For two weeks, we laughed like maniacs in rehearsal, often having to pause in the middle of scenes to regain our composure. (An activity that occurred occasionally in front of an audience as well.) We worked hard to make Roy laugh, because we knew if he was laughing we were on the right track. And, we were. Audiences loved it! That season is frozen in my memory, suspended in amber as one of the best times of my life. What Roy Hine helped build is being carried on and improved upon by Artistic Director Scott Michaels, who took over when Roy passed away. There exists still a commitment to excellence, and a level of pride and care that you don’t find in every theater. arts and entertainment Spend the evening at a world-class theater-in-the-round where talented performers bring to life classics and new musical favorites. Cheer for your favorite team at a vintage baseball game. Or enjoy one of the festivals happening throughout the county. For details on the performing arts activities in Kosciusko County, visit livewellinthemoment.com. This past summer I was asked back to direct Lend Me a Tenor, and I didn’t hesitate for a moment to say yes. Stepping into the building again brought it all back. From the perils of learning to perform in the round, to the affectionate nicknames of places like the escape tunnel (“Shawshank”), to the excitement of standing behind the curtain every night, listening to Roy give the opening speech, I’m proud to say the traditions are alive and well. Directing the show felt like the perfect way to honor a friend and an institution that is always close to my heart, and to make a whole new set of memories with a brand new group of people. And, once again we’re laughing like crazy, and hoping that all of this love and joy floods out and over the audience. The warm sun rests lazily against the crisp blue sky. The fragrance of the hot cup of house blend is wafting from the cup on the table, through the clear morning air, arousing the senses to a new day. It mingles with the aroma of the fresh, warm poppy seed muffin on the saucer next to the cup, tantalizing the taste buds and setting the stage for the events ahead. The location might be Pierceton’s Blue Lion, Winona Lake’s 1000 Park, or even the Starbucks that is nestled in the corner of Martin’s Supermarket on the northeast side of Warsaw. But somewhere between the first sip of invigorating java and the last bite of the tasty muffin, you realize the day is young and full of promise. An adventure awaits. In Pierceton, one might embark on a treasure hunt – nosing through antique shop after antique shop, searching for the perfect… well, you’ll know it when you find it. Dig through a basket of antique linens, caress the smooth grain of a 19th Century cherry highboy, or sort through stacks of retired china patterns and you’re sure to find something that suits your fancy. Take a break to gaze at a sparkling collection of estate jewelry at the Blue Pearl, browse the handcrafted necklaces at Purr-fectly Unique, or stop for a smooth piece of chocolate caramel at Weckmuller Fine Chocolates. shopping A diverse variety of artists and artisans call Kosciusko County home. Painters, photographers, and jewelers craft and sell their work in county shops. Woodworkers and furniture makers shape fine pieces for your kitchen and home. A chocolatier hand dips delicious truffles. Glass is cut in the same manner as it has been in Warsaw since 1911. At Winona Lake, there’s time to wander through the Village, fingering the handwoven scarves at Park Avenue Gallery, perhaps finding one that perfectly complements the outfit you found last week at Carson’s (or was it Kohl’s?) to wear to niece Sarah’s wedding. Don’t forget to stop by Whetstone Woodenware for a hand-carved spatula and sturdy mixing bowl or the Ortega Gallery and Studio for a painting that you know Sarah’s been wanting for their new home. And even if you didn’t find what you wanted there, the many other shops that line the canal are sure to produce something that will capture the personalities of the bride and groom. In Warsaw, it’s time to find the perfect house gift to take to Aunt Clara’s next weekend. At the century-old Warsaw Cut Glass there is a sparkling contemporary candy dish that can be filled with sweets or a tall vase that would hold fragrant flowers from her garden. In the winter, a stop at the Shuttle Shop might be a better option, where you can choose a soft wool in Clara’s favorite shade of blue which can be knit into a warm scarf. If there’s time, stop at the Party Shop for a walk through memory lane as you browse the collection of Hallmark ornaments through the years. Don’t forget the card to go with Sarah and Jon’s wedding gift while you are there! Wind your way through the northern lake communities of North Webster and Syracuse. If you haven’t found that perfect gift yet, the selection is wide in unique shops such as Artistry in Gold, Duck Weeds, or Day at the Lake. Your final destination might be the Creative Fish Art Gallery, a colorful shop that lives up to its name. As the sun sets across Lake Wawasee, head south to Lake Webster. A relaxing trip around the shoreline on the Dixie is a surefire way to end a day exploring the shops of Kosciusko County! As I walk along the aisles, various memories come to mind. All the shops stock salt and pepper shaker sets from the past. My grandmother had a grand collection of these kitschy shakers. They were neatly arranged in a beautiful curved glass china cupboard and a five-tiered bookcase. I also enjoy browsing through the large assortments of old tobacco pipes and tins. They take me back to fond memories of my grandfather smoking his pipe filled with, nonetheless, Prince Albert tobacco. What a sweet aroma! shopping Kosciusko County is home to many antique shops, ranging from fine art to elegant furniture. You’ll find most shops in the sleepy little town of Pierceton. But don’t miss out on great finds in Warsaw, Pierceton and North Webster. When you’ve discovered your treasure, tell us about it or upload a photo to livewellinthemoment.com. Recently, I enjoyed a special moment at Warsaw’s newest antique shop, the Indiana Antique Company. While browsing the store, I placed the items I wanted to purchase on the counter. As I went to pay, I noticed a little doll lying with my purchases. I mentioned that the toy did not belong to me. The owners smiled and said their first grade daughter wanted me to have it. She was grateful I had bought so many things. I was tickled, but yet taken aback by the kind gesture. She truly made my day! The little doll will be displayed in my china hutch – a reminder of a true, heartfelt moment of kindness. There’s rich and diverse heritage in Northern Indiana, much of which is rooted deeply in the arts and earth. Our new Art & Earth Trail allows us to share these nowhere-else-to-befound treasures with visitors who have never been to Northern Indiana or who have never found these great treasures. We’ve detailed seven driving loops, from Lake Michigan and the Indiana Dunes to areas known for sparkling inland lakes, past the Golden Dome of Notre Dame and onto roads where horse-drawn Amish buggies seem to outnumber cars. There is no set time for discovering the shops, restaurants and museums along the way. Depending on your time, you can bite off all or part of any loop. The leaves fall around me in hues of yellow, red, and orange. There are even a few shades of green. The sun is setting through the trees and the air is crisp. I started running more than a year ago, mostly indoors or on roads. This fall, my wife encouraged me to run with her on the trails – better on the knees, beautiful scenery, fresh air, etc. Having tackled a couple of longer distances, I decided to set a goal. Not successfully running another 5k. Not finishing the run in a time that seems reasonable. Not even finishing a challenge I’ve set for myself. No, the goal is an ice cold glass of beer and an order of Patatas Bravas at Winona Lake’s Cerulean Beer Garden, our normal watering hole through the spring, summer, and early fall months. dining You’ll find a wide variety of restaurants in Kosciusko County, whether you’re in the mood for a classic hot dog, a Japanese bento box, or a good old-fashioned fish fry. Discover your own favorite food moment in Kosciusko County, then visit livewellinthemoment.com, and tell us about it or upload a photo. The Patatas are the signature dish of the Garden. The fried potatoes are seasoned with amazing spices and a bit of chorizo added for a kick. It’s salty and savory, with hints of cumin and a distinct flavor. The edges are crispy, the centers are tender. I sometimes ask for a fried egg to be added, or maybe some cheese – so much for the calories I’ve lost on a run! The flavorful house-made ketchup on the side is the perfect cooling agent for these piping hot delights. Thinking about the Patatas encourages me to increase my pace. The hills don’t seem as steep with the thought of the Garden dancing in my mind. A perfect companion to the Patatas would be one of the micro brews on tap; or the ever-present pear cider. Ah, the cider is crisp and clean, with a bright flavor. Not too sweet, and very refreshing – it’s a great thirst quencher on a warm summer evening. At the Garden, I always run into a friend or two who are enjoying the open air setting. As time goes by we order other tasty treats from the Tapas (small plate) menu – all of which hit the spot. What a great way to spend an evening. The crispness in the air brings me back to reality. I hear voices and know some runners or bikers are coming my way. I really need to finish this run and get to my cider and Patatas. And I realize I’ll never make it there if I continue lying in the middle of the trail. Did I mention that if you focus on the goal too much you’re likely to catch a root and end up face down amongst the leaves? While beautiful, the scenery can be treacherous if you don’t pay attention! I remember riding the cruiser with my grandma. We’d walk hand-in-hand to the dock for an afternoon ride, and then buy popcorn and a bottle of pop to enjoy on the ride. As we cruised by people in their boats or on their piers, we’d wave. I loved hearing the Captain sound the horn in greeting. The Dixie is such an icon on Webster Lake; it’s been around in one form or another since 1914! A couple years ago, she was in danger of being grounded for good, but the community rallied and raised the money needed to restore and update the boat. They did a great job because she’s still just like I remember. My husband and I took our two kids and met some extended family for an evening ride this summer. Something about boarding the Dixie is just magical. My little girl waited eagerly at the rail for someone to return her wave, and my boy listened carefully to the history of the lake. He asked lots of questions about all the islands, especially the house with the tree in the middle! We drank cold pops (no bottles, though!), enjoyed the cool night air and, if only for a moment, took a step back in time. I cherish all my memories of the Dixie...old, new, and even the ones I haven’t made yet. family fun Pack a picnic lunch and spend the afternoon in one of our many parks: playing tennis, swimming, or just soaking up the sun. The light fog which had settled on the water was set aglow by the sunrise over Lake Wawasee in what looked like a perfect fishing day. “Hey sport, have you caught anything this morning?” she wanted to know. “Not yet, I’m just getting started,” I responded. “Have you had any breakfast yet?” she asked. “Not really,” I said. “I was in a big hurry this morning to get on the water by sunrise and I guess I passed up breakfast.” great outdoors Kosciusko County is home to more that 100 lakes. Some are ideal for fishing, others for sailing. Some have amusing names like Barrel-and-a-Half Lake or Lake Papakeechie. There are lakes where shorelines are covered with homes, such as Syracuse Lake or Dewart Lake; as well as lakes without a single house, like Spear Lake or Shock Lake in the Tri-County Fish and Game Area. For more information about our lakes, see page 43, or visit livewellinthemoment.com. “Y’know, I did the same thing and I’m famished. How about if I fix some blueberry pancakes, sausages and some good hot coffee for both of us? We have a table right here on the pier we can use.” I was amazed at her offer and immediately accepted with obvious enthusiasm. “What a thoughtful gesture” I said to myself. It was not very long before she came out the back door of her house with a platter of hot pancakes, sizzling sausage, and a pot of steaming coffee. “Y’know, I need to know your name so I can properly thank you for this fabulous breakfast.” “Just call me Molly. That’s what everybody calls me,” she responded with a smile. As I finished this delectable feast, I thought that there must be a way I can properly reward her kindness. “Say, how about if you fish with me for a while? I’m fishing for bluegills and I have plenty of room in my bass boat. She hopped in my boat with surprising energy. “How old are you anyway?” I wanted to know. “Sonny,” she chirped “I passed antique 10 years ago and I am now firmly situated in the fossil stage of my life. I am 81.” I will never forget Molly’s warmth and charm on that Saturday morning. I will also not forget the fact that she caught 14 more bluegills than I did! As I have reflected on this memorable event, I feel it symbolizes the spirit and character of Kosciusko County where people are both thoughtful and generous. It meanders through woodland areas, past corn fields and backyards, skirting around the city of Warsaw, and exiting the county across SR 19 just south of Etna Green. It starts small but gains strength and size as it moves across the county, fed by small creeks and drainage ditches. At its upper end, navigation may be difficult due to fallen trees across the waterway. However, it grows wider as it moves. What debris there is can easily be maneuvered around in a canoe or kayak. Because the majority of the river travels through open country and woodland areas, deer, muskrat and the occasional beaver and river otter are often seen. One might watch Great Blue Heron stalking their prey, the King Fisher diving for a minnow, and various ducks, especially Mallards and Wood Duck, propelling through the water. great outdoors Throughout the year, wildlife can be observed in its natural habitat, from upland fields to wooded areas to lakes and marshes. Tri-County Fish and Wildlife Area, Pisgah Marsh and Acres Land Trust are great places to take a hike and enjoy the wonders of nature. For more information about these wildlife areas, visit livewellinthemoment.com. Paddle around the bend of the river and one might come upon a deer drinking at the river’s edge. The herons will stay ahead of you, taking off with several hoarse squawks of alarm as you encroach on their space. If you wish to fish along the way you may catch a smallmouth bass, bluegill, catfish or even a pike. One of the notable sites along the river is the blue heron rookery (nesting area), which is best viewed from an area behind the current Kohl’s store off SR 15, north of Warsaw. However, to navigate to this area, you will need to launch your canoe or kayak at the bridge located at the intersection of CR 100E and 450N, and make your way down river. Often, as we have approached the area, we’ve heard the nearly-grown birds well before they are visible. High in the tops of trees in the backwater area are the nests, which look like large, flat thatched mats of sticks and twigs. As adults, blue herons are three feet tall. The young may appear nearly as big as they stand on the nest, which is approximately 30 feet in the air. With 15 to 20 nests in the area, it is quite a site. The foliage below is splattered with large whitish droppings from the birds. You can exit the river at the bridge on 300N or continue down river. There are other rookery locations, but not as easily observed along the river. We have canoed the areas mentioned several times over the years, as well as the full length of the river to Lake Shaffer near Monticello, Ind. When funds are tight, the river offers free recreation. With a canoe or kayak (borrowed or owned), one can easily spend a whole day floating with the current. A day on the river is relaxing, not to mention an opportunity to reconnect with nature. It is a crisp fall day and we head for one of our favorite paths along the Greenway at the Chinworth Bridge Trail. Our trail begins at the parking lot off Old Road 30 West just outside Warsaw. The cottonwoods have lost their leaves but the sycamores and the maples are still putting on a show. The reflection in the water with the bright red trestle bridge is a soothing contrast to my busy life. great outdoors Hit the trails! Kosciusko County’s many trails are perfect for walking, biking, rollerblading, skate boarding, cross country skiing. Whatever your interest, there’s a trail for you! For more information about our trails, visit livewellinthemoment.com. The dogs are more interested in smelling who has passed this way and figuring out if I will let them in the water now, or later. We choose later and begin our stroll across the bridge and through the wooded area. We opt for a long walk and turn toward Atwood to trek to Parks Schramm Road. The traffic is light and the drivers slow down and wave as they pass. I am enjoying the view of the Tippecanoe River on my right and the farm fields on my left. We spy milkweed, cattails, and bittersweet along fence rows and in ditches. The river curves and so do we, enjoying the unique architecture of the homes in this area. Or at least I am. Secure on the ends of their long leashes, Cooper and Kia are investigating the smells and rustlings of small animals. At Crystal Lake Road, we prepare to turn back, but they are just as excited to explore the other side of the road, where several miniature horses graze. Finally returning to the parking lot, we’ve walked eight miles. At the canoe launch, Cooper and Kia romp in the river and I sit on the bank thinking how blessed we are to live in Kosciusko County where adventures like this are moments away.
