district really began in
1954 when he was a kindergartener at the
original Orcutt School. Born and raised in
Orcutt, Bush attended Orcutt schools, sent his
kids to Orcutt schools, and even met his wife
at Patterson Road School when they were both
teaching there.
“Orcutt is a great place to live,” he says. “I knew
I wanted to raise my family here even before I
had a family!”
Bush began his teaching career in 1972 at
Patterson Road School where he taught sixth
grade for eight years. He followed with five
years as a seventh grade teacher at Lakeview
Junior High, one year as a third grade teacher at
Joe Nightingale, and four years as a sixth grade
teacher at Pine Grove.
“I never wanted to do anything but teach,” he
shares. “And teach here. I’m happy with a room
full of kids.”
Though he never consciously aspired to move
up in the ranks, Bush did accept the job as
Principal of Patterson Road in 1990 and kept the
position until 2000 when he became principal
of Lakeview Junior High.
Over the years, this Orcutt educator strove to
get involved outside the classroom, taking on
coaching positions in youth football, softball,
baseball, basketball, and track as well as junior
high basketball and high school football,
basketball, and softball.
“I absolutely love what I do and I love the
Orcutt School District,” Bush says. “I’ve loved
every minute. I have no regrets. I don’t think I’ve
had even one day where I woke up not enjoying
what I’m doing.”
Though he spent three years as Assistant
Superintendent of Educational Services at OUSD,
he admits that he was still surprised when
approached about becoming Superintendent
of the district.
“I hadn’t planned on that,” he says. “I never
sought the job. But the Board came to me and
said they wanted someone who’s been around
a long time, someone who is familiar with the
district. I was honored.”
“They had more confidence in me than I did!”
Bush laughs. “But if they did, then I was willing
to give it a shot.”
There have been both challenges and rewards
over the past four years. “I’ve never been very
political, so that aspect has been challenging,”
he says. “But I consider myself a people person
and I hope that people think I’m open and
approachable.”
He also admits that the decision to close May
Grisham School was extremely difficult, but that
he is very proud of Orcutt Academy High School
and the role it now plays in the community.
“Times have been tough,” he says. “But we’ve
maintained high test scores and great teachers.”
At the end of this year, Bob Bush will be
retiring, but has high hopes for the district he
has spent 42 years serving.
“I’m comfortable that the district is in a
good place now and that I’m leaving things in
good hands,” he says. “I think we will keep
growing and I think we will continue to hire
outstanding teachers and provide outstanding
education because this community really
supports education.”
“I am grateful to the Orcutt School District for
giving me the opportunity to work with so many
dedicated and professional colleagues over the
past forty two years,” he continues. “This district
has always employed staff that truly believe kids
come first. In my opinion there is not a more
important job than educating children.”
Bush always hoped that he would know when
it was the right time to retire and he says that now
feels like the right time.
“If I’m meant to do something else it will
happen,” he says. “But I’m really going to miss
it.”

SMJUHSD Approves Land Purchase for Tech School
Board members representing the Santa Maria
Joint Union High District on March 12 decided
to approve the purchase of 25 acres north of the
Elks Rodeo Grounds and east of Highway 101
to be developed into Agricultural Education
and Career Technical Education centers to
engage student readiness.
Superintendent Dr. Mark Richardson
believes the project will meet growing student
population needs and is in line with the
board's priorities to support specialized
educational endeavors with new facilities.
"Purchase of this property is a milestone in
the history of the district,'' Dr. Richardson said,
"Investing in agriculture education and a career
training facility are priorities of the board.''
If approved, a 12-month escrow period
begins and extensive site assessments will be
performed to ensure the property meets all
requirements for a school site, according to
Gary R. Wuitschick, the district's director of
support services.

farming and owned by the International
Church of the Foursquare Gospel, a religious
corporation. The cost is $3.6 million.
"Getting the property is the first step because
real estate is so limited here,'' Wuitschick said.
The possible purchase will utilize C-2004
Bond Funds (General Obligation Bond
Dollars) and the project has been in the works
for more than a year, said Yolanda Oritz,
assistant superintendent of business services.
The centers will have a capacity of 400 to 500
students.
The short-term development plan involves
a centralized farm for agricultural students
including county fair competitions, Future
Farmers of America and other projects. The
student and staff activities will involve crop
farming, livestock rearing and horticulture.
Fencing, pens, shelters, a pole barn, storage
sheds, portable restrooms, utilities (electricity)
and landscaping are also part of the plan. The
district has more than 1,500 FFA members.

Career Technical Education Center and
Capstone Career Pathway courses. Specialized
classrooms, support rooms, labs, offices,
meeting areas, storage, paved roadways and
parking and utilities will be considered too.
FFA Advisor Hector Guerra believes students
from Pioneer Valley, Santa Maria and Ernest
Righetti high schools plan to make the most
of this agricultural opportunity.
"I see a promising future,'' said Guerra,
adding the site is convenient to all three
schools. "The students who are interested, and
the ones that don't know they are interested
yet, will jump in. Agriculture is a great way to
create success stories.''
School board member Victor Tognazzini
said the project covers all the right bases for
our future leaders.
"Students will now have opportunities to
develop real world skills that will translate to
job opportunities in an increasingly technical
business environment upon graduation from

high school,'' Tognazzini said. "For those
who plan to enter the job market this affords
them a tremendous advantage. For those
students who intend to pursue additional
education, agricultural and other career
technical education can introduce them to

Dr. Richardson knows the investment in the
future will strengthen the community and the
lives of many young learners.
"This project could not have been possible
without the generosity of many community
members and business partners over the years
who have supported our programs through
donations of time, money and other resources,''
Dr. Richardson said. "This generosity coupled
with the hard work of our Ag teachers and
students have laid the foundation in the future
of agriculture and career education in the Santa
Maria Valley.''

After decades of planning, the new US 101/
Union Valley Parkway interchange finally
opened at the end of last year. With the
opening came a great deal of fanfare and
also a few headaches.
The interchange was created to ease
congestion and provide easier access to
Orcutt from Highway 101. The $10.3
million project was funded by Proposition
1B, SBCAG Measure A Local Transportation
Sales Tax, and State Gas tax for Landscaping.
In the first few months of its opening,
several Orcutt residents spoke to members
of the media regarding their concerns about
the interchange and all of the changes that
came along with it. Issues included noise,
traffic, and safety.
One of the areas causing the greatest
concern was near Union Valley Parkway and
Boardwalk Lane, where a median had been
installed to meet Caltrans section 504.3
standards which state that there must be

ramp and an intersection. Residents had
previously been able to turn left directly into
their neighborhood, but are now required
to drive further down and make a U-turn
if they wish to access Boardwalk this way.
“We did work closely with the county in
designing this project,” says Caltrans District
5 Public Information officer Jim Shivers. “It
usually takes the public a little time to get
used to the new features of the project.”
“We feel confident this project will serve
the south Santa Maria/Orcutt area very well,”
he continues. “This project was designed
to improve mobility, reduce congestion on
other surface streets and can accommodate
the growth occurring in the Santa Maria
area.”

Public Works Transportation Engineering
Manager Walter Rubalcava says that although
they do occasionally still receive complaints
about the Boardwalk intersection, they have
decreased.
“Most of the comments I hear about UVP
are positive,” he says. “My best guess is 90%
positive and 10% negative. I personally
have not received any complaints about the
overall project since it opened, just specific
issues such as Boardwalk.”
Rubalcava encourages those with concerns
to contact his office to discuss. “We have
directly addressed all complaints with
responses,” he says. “None have resulted
in physical changes, but our department
continues to monitor the situation.”

Requiem Project to Feature Local
High School Student
Auditions Announced for Santa
Maria Has Talent 2014
In preparation for the celebration
of Easter, a free performance of John
Rutter’s “Requiem” will be presented by
a community choir, and an instrumental
ensemble of cello, flute, glockenspiel,
harp, oboe, organ and piano on April
12 and 13 at 7:00 PM. The concert will
be held at The Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter-day Saints at 908 Sierra Madre,
directly South of Allan Hancock College.
“Although a number of professional
instrumentalists have joined us on this
production of “Requiem,” of particular
note is our student percussionist,
Shannon Thomas,” commented Juliann
Hemphill from the Rutter Requiem Project
committee. Shannon is a freshman
student at Orcutt Academy High School.
Although she is not in the band at the
school at this time, she has seven years
of piano experience and played both
percussion and piano for two years in
two bands in junior high school. She was
recommended by her band teacher Brenda
Hascall to play for “Requiem.” “Shannon
will be playing the Glockenspiel for
this performance and rehearses with us
regularly. She is doing a fantastic job,”
added Hemphill.
Costal Voices, a local vocal group, has
underwritten some of the professional
musicians for the performance and also
has a number of members singing in
the performance including soloist Ellen
Pillow. Other underwriting comes from
Associated Professional Advisors of Santa
Maria. The production is sponsored by
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day

instrumentalists, actors, groups and choirs
or ensembles of all sizes and ages,” said
Georgia Shore, director of Santa Maria
Has Talent. “Unfortunately, we can’t use
bands due to set up time.
Contestants will compete at 7:00 p.m.
May 8, 9 and 10 at the Santa Maria Vet’s
Hall. After two nights of preliminary
competition, winners will be announced
on Saturday, May 10. Prizes will be
awarded in Adult, Teen and Children
categories, she said, with contestants in
all three categories having a chance at the
$1,000 cash first prize.
The competition, which is open to
the public, is sponsored by Santa Maria
Rotary South. All proceeds will go to
charitable organizations.

Color Run Supports Recovery, Homeless
On the morning of Saturday, April 5,
Santa Maria will become a little more
vibrant as the Good Samaritan hosts its
first ever “Color Run for Good Sam”. The
event is a 5K with a twist; participants
will be doused in colored powder as
they journey along the course. The event
is being organized to raise proceeds
to support emergency, transition, and
support services to the homeless and those
in recovery throughout our community.
The event is open to all ages and begins
at Preisker Park in Santa Maria at 9 AM
(the race kicks off at 10). Participants
pay $25 to join in, 5 and under are free.
For those who may not want to run,
organizers say groups will walk, skip, and
possibly even dance down the course. The
event is meant to be a celebration, which
is why it is playfully called “The Happiest
Run on Earth”.
Orcutt Resident Becky Hartman recently
participated in a similar event. Hartman
shares, “The Color Run was an amazing
experience… My husband and I laughed
together as we ran through the color
zones, spinning and jumping to make sure
we were covered with color.” Hartman
goes on to say, “It was like a party that we
happened to get some exercise during. I
can’t wait to do one again!”
The same fun is sure to be had Good
Samaritan organizers prepare their own
color stations. At the end of the event
organizers promise the participants will
be “plastered with color… concluding in
an all-out color war, celebrating healthy,
happiness and individuality, while
helping the Good Samaritan.”

& Ballet Folklorico Show Set
The Righetti High School Marimba
Band & Ballet Folklórico will present its
37th annual "Big Show" performance
on Friday, April 11, and Saturday, April
12, at Santa María High School's Ethel
Pope Auditorium, located at 901 South
Broadway in Santa María. Showtime is
at 7:30pm. Tickets can be purchased at
the Student Business Offices at Righetti,
Pioneer Valley, and Santa María High
Schools. Advance sale tickets are priced
at $10 for all age groups. Tickets may

The “Big Show” is a two and one-half
hour program featuring the music and
dances of Righetti High School’s Marimba
Band and Ballet Folklórico. The program

As part of Central Coast Helping Hands,
volunteers from local churches and nonprofits are joining together to collect and
repackage food for the Santa Barbara and
San Luis Obispo County Food Banks,
conduct repairs at St. Joseph’s High
School, the Guadalupe Dunes Center and
Historic Jail as well as participate in Serve
Santa Maria Day at the Abel Maldonado
Center. Members of the community,

OCAF Drums up Dollars,
Support for the Arts

This month, I have notes from all over the Orcutt
Union School District:
The Orcutt Children’s Arts Foundation (OCAF) Gala
on February 22 was enormously successful, as over 200
educators, parents, and community members turned
out for the annual dinner-and-auction fund-raiser.
“We had a nice balance of people who are ongoing
supporters along with a group of people who are new
supporters,” says OCAF Executive Director Hannah
Rubalcava. “We were excited to have such a great
crowd.” …
The Gala brought in just over $50,000 to support arts
education in Orcutt schools. These dollars will finance
classroom lessons in dance, music, theater, and visual
arts by artists-in-residence; and teacher mini-grants
for arts lessons, arts-related field trips, and other arts
experiences. As has been stated here before, OCAF is the
primary reason why the arts have thrived in our schools
even in the context of state budget cuts. …
Ralph Dunlap School parent Allison Smith and a
committee of volunteers can be thanked for many hours
of hard work organizing this year’s Gala. “Allison was
very well organized and handled the event with grace,”
says Rubalcava. “It was a pleasure to work with her and
her committee.” …

Another arts venture worthy of mention is our districtsponsored theater production of the play Seussical.
Directed by retired district drama teacher Jean Byrne, the
play will be performed for the public in the Lakeview
Junior High School Multi-Use Room on the evenings of
has Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, mills,
lathes, and welding equipment. “Being able to work
at Hancock enabled us to be more productive with our
time,” says senior Hayden Downum, a team co-captain
along with senior Gabriel Oman. “Plus, we learned
how to weld.” Thank you, Hancock, for your support
of Spartatroniks! …
Continuing appreciation needs to be expressed to
staff, parents, and community members who have
been coaching, mentoring, and supporting our robotics
students. OAHS science teacher Ty Fredriks is the the
team’s adviser, and Scott McLean is head coach. Larry
Downum, Bruce Dunson, Gerrit Hull, Skyler Lassman,
Gil Lima, and Gill Pascek are assistant coaches. Andrew
and Enid Oman help with hospitality, and Mindy
Downum handles team logistics. Thanks, all of you! …
A “Principal for a Day” event on March 12 had
eight business persons and community members
taking the reins of Orcutt campuses for a morning.
“The experience I had made me say, ‘Wow!’ “ says
Doug Coleman, assistant to local Assemblyman
Katcho Achadjian, who visited Olga Reed School in
Los Alamos. “I was pleasantly surprised with how
intelligent the students were, and how much they were
learning. I also was impressed with the dedication of
the staff.” …
