The Podkarpackie Voivodship The Podkarpackie Voivodship, located in the southeastern extremity of Poland. It comprises an area of almost 18,000 km2 and has a population of about 2.1 million. For many centuries this area was a melting pot of cultures, traditions and religions. Besides Polish and Jewish people the region was a home for Łemko and Bojko ethnic groups, Ukrainians, Vlachs and Slovaks. A great deal of old traditions and rituals have survived until today and are recalled during various events. The emblem of the Podkarpackie Voivodship Our school is located in Rzeszow, the largest town situated in the south-east Poland. Rzeszów is approximately 100 km away from Slovakia, and not more than 90 km from the Ukraine. Rzeszow is an economic, scientific and cultural centre of southeastern of Poland, in 1999 Rzeszow became the capital of the Podkarpackie Province. It is an important focal point for such industries as: aviation, IT, trade, construction and service. It is treated to be a dynamically developing town of young and enterprising people. Subcarpathian Voivodeship is quite close to Bieszczady Mountains – beautiful, unspoilt, pristine region with picturesque scenery Page 2 Differences bring Us together Local tourist attractions-Poland Statistical data of Rzeszow - Population – 182 thousand people -Total area – 116 square kilometers - Population density – 1 773 people/sq km (one thousand seven hundred and seventy three people per square kilometer) Pict. 1 Town Hall - Number of students: 60 thousand, - Unemployment rate: 7,7% The documented history of the city dates back to the year 1345, when King Casmir the Great granted Rzeszów city rights. Among the most interesting monuments are: the 14th century Fara Church; the City Hall, dating from the 15th century, rebuilt and extended many times (beautifully renovated in the years 1993-1996); the 16th century Castle of the Lubomirski Family; dated from the 17th century: the Church of the Bernardine Fathers Pict. 2 Main street In 2004 we celebrated the 650th anniversary of Rzeszow. Pict. 3 The main square from former times Page 3 Differences bring Us together Local tourist attractions-Poland Market Square The central square of the Old Town is a Market Square in form of an irregular quadrilateral with dimensions approximately 100-110m by 50-70m. There is a City Hall here and a well built in the 17th century situated in the middle of the square. The view of the present Market Square differs from its initial layout – only three frontages are furnished with one-or-two floor tenement houses from 15th and 16th century, which were rebuild during the centuries. Hotels, restaurants, clubs, pubs and museums are located inside. The tenant house No. 19 is one of the most interesting. The pieces of brick-stone walls and vaults as well as gothic ogival lintels discovered in the basement are exposed as a part of the Underground Tourist Route. They allow us to date the start of this building’s construction at the turn of the 15th and 16th century. A stage next to the City Hall hosts performances of well-known artists, bands and winners Pict. 4 It is the town square with the historical well of Carpathia Festival. City Hall The most magnificent building in the Market Square is the City Hall placed at the corner of the west and north frontage. It was probably build in 1591 by Mikołaj Spytko Ligęza. After being re-built a few times, its present layout is dated from the turn of the 19th and 20th century. Lubomirski Castle The construction of the castle was commenced by then owner of Rzeszów, Mikołaj Spytko Ligęza, at the end of the 16th century. In the second half of the 17th the Lubomirskis expanded the castle and encircled it with a stone wall with bastions. The present view of the castle is due to the last redevelopment at the turn of the 19 th and 20th century the castle hosts the Court and The Public Prosecutor’s Office. Now there is the provincial court Underground Tourist Route - “Rzeszow cellars” - Discover the legend of Rzeszow’s Market One of our well-known attractions is the underground tourists route situated from 0,5 to 10 meters under the market square and houses. It is a network of underground corridors being built for years by the inhabitants of Rzeszow. It served them as shops, storages and during wars or cataclysms as a shelter. The low, stable underground temperature guaranteed good conditions for storing merchandise, especially food . Today these secrets beautifully restored prove resourcefulness, creativity and initiative of the city’s Page 5 Differences bring Us together Local tourist attractions-Poland dwellers. It attracts a lot of people especially during the summer period. Underground Tourist Route in numbers: - Depth: 0.5 - 10 meter under the market square and tenement houses on the three levels - Length: 369 meters - Numbers of rooms: 15 corridors, 25 cellars - Period of originating: 14th-17th century - Area of the entrance building: 646 m2 There are many attractions and secrets hidden within the route. You can find there the relics of medieval walls, signs of fire, remains of iron bars and hinges, few hundred’s years old hand shaped bricks, hidden passages. All corridors and cellars were named to reflect their function and town’s history. I Underground storages provided proper temperature for the groceries. Corridors leading to the well, located on the market square, provided a constant supply of fresh water Page 6 Differences bring Us together Local tourist attractions-Poland Multimedia fountain This fountain is located in the center of the city and is the most recent tourist attraction in Rzeszów. The fountain consists of 1600 jets that compose a carpet, labyrinth and screen of water. That’s the third biggest Multimedia Fountain in Poland, maybe not as big as the others but definitely the most technologically advanced. Some experts even say that, we can call it the one and only fountain of its kind in Europe. You can see how the music dresses up water in sounds and light that altogether form a colorful orchestra. Each Saturday at 21:00 there is a 45-minute show when you can see water, lasers and hear music composed by Vivaldi, Beethoven, Michael Jackson, Depeche Mode and U2 transforming into a great show. The fountain was completed in 2013 and at the total cost was 7 million zlotys (€1 664 579) Łańcut Castle Our region has rich history. One of the well-known sights is Łańcut Castle close to Rzeszow. Łańcut Castle is one of the most beautiful aristocratic residences in Poland, famous for its excellent interiors and extraordinarily interesting collection of horse-drawn carriages. The palace complex is surrounded by an old and picturesque park in the English style filled with pavilions Page 7 Differences bring Us together Local tourist attractions-Poland The present castle was built for Stanisław Lubomirski in 1629 - 1642. At that time it was a modern type of residence, consisting of living quarter with towers at the corners, surrounded by bastion fortifications The town founded by King Casimir the Great, belonged once to the families of Pilecki, Stadnicki, Lubomirski and Potocki. Today it is known mainly for the palace, a top class landmark as well as the Music Festival which hosts the leading artists from all over the world. For many years the aristocratic residence was a meeting place of European royalty, politicians and artists. Today the main attraction is the palace featuring amazing interiors e.g. chambers, ball rooms, theatre , library and sculpture gallery. Other places worth seeing include amazing 30-hectare park, orangery and carriage house with its collection of carriages, the largest in Poland. Bieszczady Mountains These picturesque mountains located along the border with Slovakia and Ukraine remain one of the wildest places in Europe. This is a beautiful, unspoilt region, very close to our home city. It is a fabulous place to visit. We are sure you will be amazed to discover green meadows, storks, beautiful daisies or a well-known Polish poppy flowers. You Page 8 Differences bring Us together Local tourist attractions-Poland can admire fantastic scenery and views. Visitors can encounter the European bison or lynx, hear the deer bellowing and the wolf howling . Other attractions include rich flora and enchanting views which spread from the bare mountain tops and the tallest Bieszczady summits (Tarnica – 1346 and Halicz 1333m). The unique wildlife has been protected within the Bieszczady National Park since 1973. The Bieszczady attract tourist in all seasons of the year. Convenient trails and routes facilitate hiking, horse-trekking and cycling trips. Solina Lake draws hundreds of Sailors and in the sky over Bezmiechowa and Weremień growing numbers of gliders and paragliders can be seen. The area also provides opportunities for extreme sports. In winter the Bieszczady turn into skier’s paradise. This place is surrounded by beautiful forests and hills. In summer time the lake is full of yachts. There is also hydroelectric power station inside the water dam. Have you ever seen a wolf or a bear live at large? If not, you would have a chance to see them in the forest. There is also a big artificial lake (reservoir) called Solina in the middle of Bieszczady Mountains It is the ideal place for people who like water sports. Page 9 Differences bring Us together Local tourist attractions-Poland Prządki/ Stone Spinners In the vicinity of Krosno in Czarnorzecko-Strzyżowskim Landscape Park visitors can see Prządki, huge weathered sandstone rocks unique for this region of Poland. The one of a kind shape is explained by a local legend. It says that the castellan’s daughters from nearby castle in Odrzykoń disregarded a holy day by weaving garments for their fiancés. They were punished for this by being turned into stone - becoming the Stone Spinners. From 1957 Prządki have a status of nature reserve and are the only rock reserve in south-eastern Poland. The groups of rocks up to 25 meters tall are named: the Spinner-Mother and the Spinner-Crone, the Chieftain and the Ruffian Madej. We Cordially invite you to visit our region Page 10
