When the cow business is good, ranchers buy more bulls than when business isn’t good. They are looking for bulls that will solve their problems. They also have to get their cows pregnant. But, if they can’t find bulls that will solve their problems, they will have no choice but to take the best bulls available. Unfortunately for the Shorthorn breed, I don’t think we have enough bulls available to get one extra thousand Shorthorn bulls into this great, open market for replacement bulls. by Dave Lorenz, Missouri Shorthorn Breeder Originally published in 1965 in the 50th Anniversary issue of Shorthorn World The Charolais people are trying. The black Angus people are trying. The red Angus people are trying. The Santa Gertrudis, Brangus, Beefmaster people are trying. We, at Kansas City are trying too! We’ve been building the strength of our herd from within. We’ve been adding the strong bulls and outstanding females we believe will help us. Sound feet and legs are an absolute must. We believe we must breed the kind of strength and quality into our Shorthorns…that you should breed into your Shorthorns…to make bulls and their calves strong enough to be preferred by ranchers, and commercial cattlemen…and take some bull business away from these other breeds. You can do this too. If you aren’t already breeding the strong kind of Shorthorns with strong bone and sound feet and legs that will produce bulls that will be preferred by commercial cattle people…don’t let the Great Shorthorn Revival pass you by. The Great Shorthorn Revival is here. But, everybody has to do his part if we are going to get the business away from these other breeds. They’re not just going to drop dead because our breed awakens to this great need. The present commercial cow men…those with 200 or more cows…will be the calf producers to supply the calves to be finished mostly by others. As world finished beef demand starts to exceed United States calf production, our American calf producers will have already discovered that they can more profitably sell heavier calves at weaning time than in recent years. They can get heavier calves in only two ways: 1. They can creep-feed high cost grain. 2. They can infuse Shorthorn blood, and get it FREE! The need for strong Shorthorn bulls is 100 times greater than your and our capacity to produce at this time. But, opportunity is where the NEED is…and because the need is great, the opportunity is great! Don’t let the Great Shorthorn Revival pass you by! Start today! If you need a new bull, travel farther, look harder, pay more…but insist on the bull you need. Don’t settle for a substitute for a good bull. Pick up the big, strong females you occasionally have the opportunity to buy. The kind that will produce a calf every year, and give enough milk to make a job of the calf. Start today to build up the strength of your herd. Competition demands that all of us Shorthorn people produce bulls that will sire bull calves strong enough to be preferred by commercial cattlemen all over America! Don’t let the Great Shorthorn Revival pass you by! What makes an ideal cow? The power to produce two great daughters by two very different sires! A wise, old cattlemen once told me, “Bulls that look like bulls make cows that look like cows.” You will have to travel thousands of miles to find a bull this good, with an outcross pedigree as genetically diverse as his. He is a good mix of Western Canadian and American genetics. The search for your herd sire is over! 7 Since our beginning in 1994, Bowman Superior Genetics has never been one to follow the crowd. Our goal is to consistently produce cattle that excel in the breed’s greatest strength: maternal ability. Working hard to produce maternally excellent females that annually perform for cattlemen across North America, the Bowman family takes great pride in the quality genetics that come from our operation. Our family is passionately working to improve the production, promotion, and longevity of the Shorthorn breed. What began as a dream decades ago, has transformed into a successful program that we are happy to share with you as we strive to breed and develop functional and profitable Shorthorn breeding stock. Practical Ideas. Practical Cattle. Those two simple phrases define this eastern Indiana Shorthorn breeding program. In an honest attempt to bring Beef Shorthorns back into the mainstream marketplace for logical production, our herd has grown from three original cows, bought from Wonder View Farms in 1994, to well over 100 producing females today. As we traveled across the USA and Canada, we began to learn more about what production-oriented Shorthorn genetics can do for the industry. The need for maternal heterosis through a British-based breed has never been more important to the beef industry than it is today! It is a great honor to offer your choice of the greatest generation of Shorthorns bred by Bowman Superior Genetics. This year’s crop of heifers is rare among the population in that they are steeped in generations of truly maternal genetics. MURIDALE THERMAL ENERGY 15A We view “maternal” as an ability, and not a fancy marketing term or a special haircut. We are disciplined in making cattle that lead for calving ease, adequate growth, and muscle, that are backed by sires and dams with performance documentation that can stand the heat of comparison, generation after generation. Our herd continues to be strongly influenced by some of the breed’s best, and most proven, sires for $British Maternal Index. You will have the option to sort through and select from the first daughters of Muridale Thermal Energy 15A, the largest selection of Mapleton Colonel Gus 71U heifers anywhere, and the last of the naturally-sired females ofan awesome “cowmaker,” the deceased Coalpit Creek Leader 6th. We will show you daughters of all the influential sires who have left their mark on this herd – you’ll have free rein to choose from any one of them. MAPLETON COLONEL GUS 71U COALPIT CREEK LEADER 6TH Photo Credit: Lindsay Sankey 8 It may not be easy to make your choice, but we’re certain that any member of this calf crop will easily add power and predictability to improve your breeding program, and increase the distinction of your brand. 8 PICK OF THE 2016 HEIFER CALF CROP Buyer’s Choice of 2016 Spring & Fall Heifer Calves •Offered by Bowman Superior Genetics • Selection and pickup must be made prior to December 15, 2016. • Transportation is to be provided by the buyer. The unparalleled pick of our heifer calf crop is a fitting observance of the 15th Annual Great Shorthorn Revival! BSG is focused on the positive influence of Shorthorns, who deserve the same leading and competitive spot in the nation’s cowherd that they had decades ago. Rejuvenate your operation with a Shorthorn female that represents this breed’s future. It is a great time to raise Shorthorns, and the coming years will be even brighter! If you can’t make it to the herd to pick your choice, we recommend Cody Sankey, new Chief Sire Analyst for Genex, to assist you in your selection. Solution mated to the full sister of Aviator and Wingman presents layers of Rose genetics...a truly unique female, she proves yet again that the Rose combination works. She’s the only one bred like this in the world, as of today. (Hunter George is offering a full sister pregnancy, Lot 19!) When I’ve talked to people about Lilac 1606, “super deep and really showy” has described her to a T. Her Aviator dam and the whole Lilac family has done very well in the show ring and the pasture. (Notice the Rose genetics top and bottom again? If something works, make a habit of it!) Lucy 1628 is the longest and flashiest of the three. She is super sound and has major eye appeal. Her full sisters have done very well – at the 2015 Junior National, David Smith’s full sister was 4th Overall (see her on page 21) and Sara Sullivan’s full sister, pictured page 19, was 5th Overall in 2016. That’s consistency in my book! (Lucy’s sire is a full brother to Solution, and her dam is sired by Aviator. Rose genetics stacked up yet again.) Clint was a Shorthorn man from birth, an international show judge, a salesman extraordinaire, and he served as Executive Secretary of ASA from 1941 to 1951. He left the association to join his boyhood Shorthorn friend Frank Harding and his father F.W. Harding in forming American Live Stock Insurance Co., but Clint never left behind his love for the breed he helped make great. For hours we quizzed Clint about the “golden days of Shorthorns.” And he answered, in-depth and in illuminating detail, as only he could. Steve asked, “Clint, how are we going to get Shorthorn breeders to focus again on the cow families that made the breed great?” Without hesitation, and for about an hour, Clint advised a brilliant marketing strategy that has proven to work. He started off saying, “Steve, you’re going to have to create an ECONOMIC OPPORTUNITY. You can’t just tell people the cow families are important. You have to show them! And show them right in their pocketbook, where it counts the most!” The Great Shorthorn Revival was born! 2002 Here’s a look back at just a few Revival “economic opportunities” that have made an impact... We didn’t get her pictured, but you’ll see her on sale day. Making a purchase in the Revival creates the eligibility to consign to future sales. Contact Steve French by December 1 to discuss potential lots for “The Springtime Revival” in Oklahoma in April, 2017. REVIVAL BUYER/SELLER AGREEMENTS • For all lots in which future fulfillment is a factor (ie. flushes, retained rights and retained percentage ownership), the Revival provides a written agreement between seller and buyer. Prepared by an attorney, these agreements document the original sale terms in case of a dispute. Both parties will sign, and the original, signed agreement is filed by the Revival. REVIVAL EMBRYO PACKAGES & IVF STATUS • Proper settlement must be made in order for embryos to be released. Shipping arrangements and costs are the responsibility of the buyer. Embryo packages labeled as IVF require an advanced standard of technical expertise for implantation – attention to this detail is necessary! PREGNANCY INSURANCE • The Revival suggests that buyers of pregnancy lots invest in pregnancy insurance. The policy covers a live birth and the first 49 days of life at the cost of 13% of the purchase price. Buyers should notify Hugh F. Miller Insurance, Harding & Harding agent, on sale day or by phone at 815-626-1300 by October 3, 2016. DNA GENOTYPING & GENETIC TESTING • A DNA genotype is utilized in establishing parentage and in determining the presence of a genetic condition. Animals do not have to be DNA genotyped or free of a genetic condition to be registered. If an animal becomes an A.I. sire or a donor dam, all required genetic testing must be completed and a DNA record must be on file with ASA prior to registering any progeny. Recognized genetic conditions that require DNA testing are thoroughly explained on the ASA web site: www.shorthorn. org. Genetic conditions “free” (F) and “carrier” (C) that have been reported to the ASA are continually updated on the website. Buyers are urged to consult the ASA web site for the most up-to-date list of test results for all genetic conditions. Genetic conditions of individuals and donors, as known at press time, are noted within the pedigrees of individual animals. If genetic testing of sale animals is in progress, test results will be reported on the sale update. CALFHOOD VACCINATION OF HEIFERS • All Revival open heifers have been calfhood vaccinated by their consignors. CANADIAN PURCHASES • We welcome our Canadian friends to make purchases in the sale, and have arranged with Armstrong Farms in Pennsylvania to conduct international testing for a fee of $750, payable directly to the Revival sale upon settlement of your purchase. After testing is complete, the buyer is responsible for making arrangements for shipment to Canada. If we can help you in any way before or after the sale please let us know. We want you to be successful with your purchase! 45 A JSF BROKER SEMEN PACKAGE This may be the LAST Broker semen to sell at public auction! x4202793, Polled, DSF, THF, PHAF, Roan LEVELDALE RIGHTEOUS 084 ET KL QUEEN OF BEAUTY 152ND SU LU MASTERPLAN 355 { AREF ROSEWOOD 1193 ACHIEVER { KLKL FOREMOST QUEEN OF BEAUTY 131ST CED 9 0.36 BW -1.4 0.45 WW 45 0.31 YW 52 0.31 MK 27 0.20 $CEZ 34.91 $BMI 127.48 $F 48.22 EXCLUSIVE SEMEN PACKAGES •Offered by Jungels Shorthorn Farm, Stangl Shorthorns, Aegerter Marketing •Offering 5 straws of Broker semen B SULL OUTBACK 8116 ET SEMEN PACKAGE Full brother to Grey Goose and Asset.
