DID YOU KNOW? The Concierge Recommends Volume 02 / Issue 19 estd 2014 September 2015 IN THIS ISSUE In the late 1970’s, the unique building of the old Majestic Hotel was once under threat of being demolished by its own proprietors to make way for a 23-storey office and shopping complex! This was met with strong opposition from the Malaysian Institute of Architects, which had listed the hotel in its 1976 publication, Guide to Kuala Lumpur’s Notable Buildings. Local architect Hajeedar Hj Abdul Majid waxed lyrical the following year: “An old man without memories is not an old man, is he? A city like ours needs buildings like the Majestic. They are a measure, a physical form by which we measure time and the progress we have made”. In 1976, Hotel Majestic was classified under the Antiquities Act 1976 which provides for the preservation of places and structures of historical and architectural significance. It was then acquired by the government and earmarked to house the National Art Gallery. The last 19 guests checked out of the Hotel Majestic on 1st January 1984, closing a chapter in history. It spelled an end of an era for its workers, some of whom had served faithfully for nearly 30 years Saturday Night Fever - Bee Gees’ Smash Hit Musical & bon Jovi Live in Malaysia Power Woman Encore Concert Celebrating Genting 50th Anniversary& Skrillex Live in Malaysia MTV World Stage Malaysia 2015 National Museum Malaysia Open, Kuala Lumpur 2015 Coffee & Arts Fringe Festival Asia Concierge Recommends A monthly newsletter prepared by the Concierge team of The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur. It was built by the British and Selangor governments in 1898 following the formation of the Federated Malay States in 1896. On 10 March 1945, during the end of World War II, the right wing of the museum was bombed and destroyed by the US B-29 bomber, from the Allied Forces. The museum's collection was then moved to the Perak Museum in Taiping. Muzium Negara is a palatial structure built in the style of Rumah Gadang, an aspect of Minangkabau architecture.
