She obtained her degree in law with honours from the University of Malaya in 1982 and was subsequently admitted as an Advocate & Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in January 1983 and has been in active private legal practice since. Dato’ Low has been actively involved in the Bar Council of Malaysia since 1996. She serves as an elected member of the Malaysian Bar Council and on several Bar Council Committees. She is also a registered mediator of the Malaysian Bar Council Mediation Centre and a Notary Public. Dato’ Low was a national athlete in softball and netball. She is still actively involved in the sports community, holding the positions of President of the Softball Confederation Asia (since 2010); Secretary-General of the International Softball Federation (since 2009) and World Baseball-Softball Confederation (since 2013); Member of the Women & Sport Commission of the International Olympic Committee; Chair of the Special Technical Committee of the Malaysia Games (since 2007) and served as the Technical Delegate for the sport of softball at various South East Asian (SEA) Games, Asian Games and Olympic Games; Served as a member of the Commonwealth Advisory Body on Sport (CABOS) and was Deputy Chair until the expiry of her term in December 2012; and Member of the Sports Advisory Panel to the Honourable Minister of Youth & Sport Malaysia. SPEAKER’S PROFILE AHMAD SHAPAWI BIN ISMAIL Ahmad Shapawi bin Ismail is presently the Sports Commissioner of Malaysia under the Ministry of Youth and Sports. He was appointed to this position on 17 June 2013. Prior to this, he was the Chief Executive Officer of the Institute Sukan Negara. He had also held positions such as the Director of Bahagian Persediaan Antarabangsa, Bahagian Dasar and Bahagian Atlet in the National Sports Council from 1988 to 2012. He was also a panel member in the drafting of the Sports Development Act 1997, Deputy Chef-de-Mission for several major sporting events such as the SEA Games, Islamic Countries Games and the secretariat for the Malaysian Contingent of the Asia Games, Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games. Ahmad Shapawi was appointed the Deputy Chef-de-Mission for the SEA Games in Brunei (1999), Kuala Lumpur (2001) and Manila (2005). He was instrumental in the preparation of the Malaysian Contingent which emerged as overall champion winning 111 gold medals at the Sea Games 2001 in Kuala Lumpur. Ahmad Shapawi was also an active sepak takraw player for the university and state level. SPEAKER’S PROFILE FARIS SHEHABI Faris Shehabi graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) (B.Comm.) from the University of New South Wales in 2005. He was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of New South Wales and High Court of Australia in 2006, working as a commercial litigation solicitor with Jackson Lalic Lawyers until July 2011. He went on to complete his LLM in International Law at IE Law School in Madrid, graduating in July 2012 with Honourable Mention recognising the highest scores in the program. Faris presently fills the position of Deputy Head of Legal Services with the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration, where he is in charge of Arbitration services. He is also on the Asia-Pacific Forum for International Arbitration (AFIA) Committee and is the exclusive correspondent (Malaysia and Australia) for the Buenos Aires Arbitration Review. Faris speaks English and Arabic and is spearheading the KLRCA’s involvement in the development of a Malaysian arbitration platform for sport.
