Fall 2008
ARNS President’s Message …………………………So there I was at the birthday party of a special friend this summer,
when it came to me that there was only about 160 odd days until Christmas. How’s that for
a scary thought? My wife says that I need to get out more.
I trust that you are all enjoying the summer and that you have remained healthy, happy, and
busy. After the very successful spring barbecue, complete with some excellent bluegrass
music, great food, and the ever popular camaraderie, we all went our separate ways and got
involved with many projects. Some members travelled (near and far), some golfed, some
fished, some read a good book, and others enjoyed the company of friends and relatives as
they came to visit.
I’m looking forward to the new season so I may meet new friends, including ARNS members
who have recently retired. As I’ve said in the past, the ARNS family is ever growing.

Recently, (at a Skills Canada competition in Calgary) I was introduced to a retiree from our
neighbouring institute to the south, namely SAIT. This person was quite surprised when I
spoke proudly of our retired staff association. He was very interested to know that ARNS
was a group of retired staff with no certain affiliation to what we used to do. He could only
smile (weakly), when I pointed out that SAIT could do the same as we do, but their acronym
may pose a small problem. ARSS could probably be misconstrued, but as I said, “It would be
easy to remember”. I promised to help out with ideas for them if he was to pursue the idea
of forming a group.

Our AGM is scheduled for the fall and I am looking forward to yet another dinner at Ernest’s
in the company of many friends and colleagues. Be sure to read the article explaining the
event - and for sure - get your tickets early.

Bob Busse has been busy interviewing some long time retirees in preparation for the NAIT
History project. He tells me that he is enjoying the chats with the members and recalling the
early days at NAIT.
Associate Chair,
On another very important note, you should have received your 2008 NAIT United Way
Family Campaign Pledge Package in the mail. I encourage you as always to support the campaign, and as I always say “It would be great to see more people giving some, rather than the
same people giving more”. I truly believe that together we can all make a difference. Please
take some time to fill out your pledge form, and return your entry ballot for the two great
early bird prizes!

Each former staff member has a unique story to tell of their time spent in the hallowed halls of
NAIT. It takes the input of all to tell the complete story of the institute’s development to the
present status of the top technical institute of the country. If somewhere during your time here
you encountered a humorous event, tell us about it. We also look at the serious ones, they
combine to make the whole. Did you ever open up the classroom on a cold morning of a blizzard to
find the floor 1/3 covered with snow? I did! So the class and I went for an extended coffee break.
Did you ever work on a program, then have it dropped? Tell us about the good, the bad, the fun,
and the heartache, the happy, and the sad times encountered at NAIT. It takes all of these hundreds
of such incidences to make NAIT what it is today. To use an old cliché “you don't learn from
success, it is what you expected with problems and failures, you learn as the problem is corrected.”
I have done several taped interviews, but we would also like to have some “written out ones” as it is
not possible to get every retired staff member for a formal talk, but your story is still important to
the project. We need all the information to produce the best readable document possible, a mix of
statistics, personal notes, success, failures, etc. to do this. We would like to read news items, see
copies of awards, photographs (good quality ones) the better the copy, the better it can be printed.
Oh, by the way, include permission to enclose it in the final product with copywriter to NAIT or to
ARNS. Do you desire to have the copy returned to you? Send that request with your information,
we will make a copy then return originals to the sender. We have not at this time set a deadline,
because we know not the amount of information or the extent of information coming to use. Please
send the information to either of the following addresses:

Annual Spring Fling BBQ 2008 Report Submitted by Frank Boodram Contentment is not the fulfillment of what you want, but the realization of how much you already
have…Frank Boodram, Chair of the Social Committee welcomed our special guests including
NAIT’s dynamic President and CEO Sam Shaw and his lovely wife Claudia, and ARNS members and
guests to the Annual SPRING FLING BBQ 2008. He recognized NAIT’s recent retiree Eric
Papsdorf, Continuing Education Steve Crocker and members of their Blue Grassy Band, who kept
the crowd fully entertained throughout the evening.
It was great to see so many familiar faces from all areas of the institute, as well as many new faces to
ARNS events. The camaraderie shared by the NAIT retirees is truly heart-warming, they never
want to leave after an ARNS get together. That says a lot about the institution itself.
Your Social Committee is here to serve you, both Jean Lang and I would love to hear from you
from time to time, so keep your input coming. Some of you have mentioned that Tuesdays, when
we have normally scheduled our functions, do not work for you, because of other commitments
This fall we are having our Annual Fall Banquet on Thursday, November 06, 2008, so mark your
calendars, get a group together and reserve your tickets early, because seating in the dining room is
limited.

Annual Spring Fling BBQ 2008 Report continued Bob called on Cynthia Boodram to ask a Blessing before the
meal. As the tables were called Bob regaled us with
questions on NAIT’s history. Bob thanked the catering staff
for providing us with a delicious meal.
ARNS President Bob Morgan recognized the Special guests
and called on Sam Shaw to give the retirees and guests an
update on what is happening at NAIT, locally, provincially,
nationally and globally.
The camaraderie, the prizes, the music and entertainment, the
Social Chair’s jokes as well as those provided by the two Bobs, provided a good time to be had by
all.
Our next function will be the Annual Fall Meeting and Banquet, Thursday, November 06, 2008 in
the NAIT Dining Room (Ernest’s Fine Dining). Please see the insert into this newsletter for
information on how to reserve your tickets now.
Sincerely,
Frank Boodram
