Welcome to Bespoked 2014 - The UK Handmade Bicycle Show
A celebration of the handmade bicycle industry.
It’s a very exciting time for frame building at the moment. The depth of talent and level of
enthusiasm is quite astonishing. The craftsmanship on display here is amongst the best in
the world. The people who make these wonderful bicycles are the people you will meet
and talk with at the show. They are the ones with the skills to tailor a bicycle to meet your
requirements to make the bike of your dreams.
We would like to thank everyone who has attended and all those exhibiting for making this
year’s show happen.
Thank you to Lindsay Gray for all her help and support with the organisation of the show
and of us! Thank you to Ben Broomfield for photographing the show and the exhibitors
work.
Don’t forget to vote for your favourite exhibitor and have the chance to win some lovely
Vulpine clothing. The voting slip is on the back of your entry ticket. The winner will be
announced on Sunday afternoon.
We hope that you enjoy the show!

Since we opened our doors in Spring 2009, we have built over 500 bikes for our very satisfied
customers. All our frames are hand-built in the UK using British steel. At 14 Bike Co, we don’t
simply put you on a bike – we build a bike for you. We start by measuring for the right size
frame. If we have the correct frame in stock, then we can move on to the next stage. If we
don’t, then we’ll build one especially.

18Bikes have been producing custom frames in the Peak District since 2006. We design and
make frames one at a time to ensure we create the best frame possible. We use the most
appropriate materials and manufacturing techniques and can design build any style of
frame. We are best known for mountain bike hardtails using Reynolds 853, but the bikes we
are bringing to this years show will demonstrate how versatile we are. This year we’ll have a
variety of bikes, from Road, ‘Cross and mountain bikes - maybe with something a little more
unusual too...

5 years ago, our designer, Ken Aoi, hoped to own an unique bike; this is the beginning of AOI.
CYCLE. Ken Aoi saw there forms a beautiful curve on riders backs when they are riding bikes.
AOI.CYCLE’s prototype occurred to him. He decided to change the traditional style of geometric
diamond-shaped structure and apply this unique curve to bike design. In order to let people
ride bikes more elegantly, he innovatively created the design that omits the seat tube. AOI.
CYCLE choose to adopt stainless steel SUS304 which is rarely used to make bikes. It does not use
paint coating and every tube needs to be ground and polished by hand. This allows AOI.CYCLE
to present its unique metal gloss.

August Wheelworks is a one-man operation, working out of an idyllic workshop in rural
Norfolk. Working closely with a number of the most acclaimed UK framebuilders, Gavin
Buxton decided to set up shop and start offering his hand built, bespoke wheel building
services to the public. August Wheelworks aim to be the standard by which all builds are
measured, taking time to discuss customer needs, select the most appropriate components
and complete every wheel by hand, within the tightest tolerances.

baldwin
We are a true British brand specialising in building high end, custom fitted titanium bicycle frames
to customer’s exacting specifications. We only build to order and we only build them one at a time.
We understand the relationship of how important the fit of your bike is to the enjoyment and
performance that you get out of your riding. Each and every bike is hand crafted in Beverley, East
Yorkshire. We believe that by focusing like this on one bike at a time, a truly special bike evolves.
Each and every bike is made with passion and love – something that is hard to achieve in a mass
production bicycle factory. Added to that, we also believe that titanium is the ultimate material to
build a bike with.

baum (prestige cycles)
Darren Baum trained and worked as a certified aircraft engineer and stainless steel TIG welder
before becoming a frame builder. His cycling career began as an A grade rider before a car
accident in 1990 sparked a long-term interest in how biomechanics and bike design can be
used to increase performance. The rest, as they say, is history.

Over almost a century and a half, Brooks England has grown from a small workshop to a
byword in quality craftsmanship. Back in 1865, John Boultbee Brooks left his hometown of
Hinckley in Leicestershire with just £20 in his pocket. On 28 October 1882, Mr Brooks filed his
first saddle patent. Inspired by the timeless products designed by our predecessors, we have
revived the original slogan ‘Saddles, Bags, Etc’ and introduced a range of cycle bags and other

Chris began fabricating steel road racing and touring frames from his small shop in Santa

marque, the majority of Chris’ work was done for racing teams. Many Cielo frames were raced
in the United States under the names of several prominent manufacturers and pedaled by
some of the day’s most notable racers. While Chris’ specialty at the start was 700c road bikes
he would go on to produce several models of mountain bikes and in the process, discover
a new market. A market that quickly and near unanimously embraced his durable sealed

columbus - gruppo srl
The story of the most famous steel tubes in the history of cycling began in 1919 when A.L. Colombo founded
his steel plant with the ambition to “to do business in iron and steel and make a fair and honest profit,”.
The result was the history of cycling as we know it: legendary tube sets AIR, MAX (first tube-set to break
the tradition of conventional diameters and introduce concept of orientated ellipses and differentiated
sections), SL, SLX, NIVACROM (EL and Genius), Altec, Starship and Spirit right up to the most 2009’s XCR,
the world’s first ever tubeless stainless steel tube set which allows for the production of a steel frame
competitive (and out-performing in some categories) at the highest level of the sport on all levels: weight
(sub-1400g), rigidity, fatigue resistance and of course the remarkably superior handling of steel.

bicycles. They’re built with the foundations of clear thinking and a love for working with the
customer and the design process in which your dream bicycle is translated from mind to

limit fabrications
Founded in 2001 by Patrick Banks, Limit Fabrications has gained cult status with BMX fanatics
and widespread recognition from riders with a passion for innovation and custom detailing. Selftaught from his 9th birthday when he asked for, and received, his first welding set, Patrick began
learning his trade by making three-wheelers. Following many years in the saddle and with his
interest in bicycle design not subsiding, he decided to attend the United Bike Institute in Oregon to
complete an intensive framebuilding course after which he returned to Norfolk and started Limit
Fabrications. Having now ridden for 21 years, Pat needs no introduction to local riders. Already
supplying much of the BMX scene, he is fast gaining a following from cyclists of all disciplines keen
to test the boundaries of conceptual design and performance.

Bikes say a lot about yourself. Why then should a frame not be every bit as unique as the
human being riding it? That’s why I love and build custom frames. I don’t do production runs.
I build bespoke bikes, one by one, starting with design and the geometry to fit you like a
glove, continuing with a hacksaw, a file, a TIG welder, a pipe bender and finishing everything
off with an extensive manual finish and a bolt on headbadge. If I had a say everybody would

Merényi Bicycles is a small enterprise which was founded to build bicycles with a method fairly
unknown in Hungary. It is our objective to respect and try to meet the needs and demands of the
cyclists —who are in search of quality and singularity— already in the process of frame building.
In our choice of tubing and technology, we are not bound by piled-up stocks. In the choice of
paintwork and ornamentation, there are no fixed designs enforced by executives, moreover, we
know and use more colours than red, blue and yellow. As for the rest of the components of the bike,
here too, we have the possibility of choosing the best components and accessories offered by the
trade. Each and every one of our frames is unique, numbered and built for custom order. We believe
that the birth of a bicycle is an adventure we share with our customer.

builder Mark Reilly Mustard Bikes have delivered just that – a light but affordable titanium
frame. Cool and distinctive, this frame cuts the mustard!

Nagasawa is part of a small group of bicycle builders whose status borders on the legendary.
In the design of track bikes, what sets a Nagasawa apart is the way that his frames come
together, every detail meticulously positioned, every feature designed by the man himself
and refined over the years. The dropouts and lugs are Nagasawa designs, not stock pieces.
Nagasawa selects every tube based on your riding style and weight. He meticulously checks
his tubes out of the box from the factory checking for perfect profiles and minor defects. The
man is a true perfectionist.

sports, so he decided to renew his father’s job and to move decisively the production from
simply wool jerseys to jerseys for cyclists. The production was immediately appreciated from
the experts because of the high quality, this gave to the company the opportunity to have

The tailor’s art embodied for cycling
Made to measure frames in all four materials.
Proud to hand-build all four materials in Cusano Milano, Italy.
Four limited edition Sessanta bikes
Only 60 made in each material worldwide
STEEL SINCE 1953
For enthusiasts of this noble material, the bike
should only be made from steel. De Rosa has 60
years of history in the processing of steel. We know
all its virtues and know how to get the best out of
it. For this reason, even after 60 years, each steel
frame is as cared for as our first.
TITANIUM SINCE 1992
The material. Full stop. To work titanium requires
specialist knowledge and skill. This knowledge and
skill that De Rosa has developed in almost 20 years
makes each frame an aesthetic and performance
work of art.
ALUMINIUM SINCE 1996
CARBON SINCE 2000
The reference material for all current frames. Rigid, light, resistant, reactive and comfortable. Carbon fibre is without
doubt the present and the future of cycling. De Rosa proposes a blend of hi-modul carbon, the fibres of which are
hand-layered in our workshop in Cusano.
Prestige brands from i-ride.co.uk
There are many aluminium alloys that are utilized
and in De Rosa we use only the best. Aluminium
represents a turning point in frame manufacturing,
giving the possibility of developing new frame
concepts, thanks to its ductility, lightness and
resistance. We truly believe in aluminium.

restrap
Restrap products are made by cyclists, for cyclists. Riding is what we do. When it all began, we were spending our
summers tackling the hills of West Yorkshire, putting our bikes and ourselves to the test. We passed - our bikes
didn’t. Amazing views, climbs and descents were frequently spoiled by one thing: broken pedal straps. Back then,
there was simply nothing on the market strong enough to withstand the forces and pressures of everyday riding. So
we made our own. In the back bedroom of a house in Bingley, we designed, developed and produced our signature
product, the diagonal strap. It was a success. Other cyclists began asking for the product, demand increased and
Restrap was born. From these small beginnings, Restrap has gone from strength to strength, now producing a
wide range of innovative, hard wearing cycling products. We know what cyclists want, understand those small
but irritating riding problems, and we solve them with careful, functional designs. Most of our products are still
handmade in Yorkshire from recycled, locally sourced materials and always will be.

Reynolds invented tube butting in 1898 – to reduce weight safely. This mechanical engineering
process is still used over 114 years later in lightweight bike frames. Reynolds was the first
to introduce 531, a highly alloyed steel in 1935, and the first heat-treated steel (753) to the
industry in 1976. Remaining innovative, we also use 3-2.5 and 6-4 titanium, hydroformed
aluminium, air-hardening 631 and 853, and maraging stainless steel (Reynolds 953 – currently
the strongest tube-set available to builders).

for a group of bikoholics to dig into the world of frame building. But ambition and theoretical

you can’t solve a problem on your own? You make it public! This was the initial spark for an

cinelli - gruppo srl
In bike we trust!
We apply Design principles to our products, but also to our company. Design is not just looks.
Design means shape, first project, outline, technology, technique, materials, innovation,
creativeness, function, quality, uniqueness, know-how, emotion. We want every product to
have an Idea, since, if it is a copy, it cannot be Cinelli. However, the road to the mission is long
and not easy at all.
