Reflection
The Fourth Sunday of Easter is traditionally called
Good Shepherd Sunday. It is also designated as “World Day
of Prayer for Vocations.” The Holy Father has asked us to
pray for vocations to priestly and religious lives. In the gospel, Jesus said: “My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and
they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never
perish. No one can take them out of my hand…The Father
and I are one.” This gospel passage portrays Jesus as the
Good Shepherd, the most significant portrait of Christ. It is
also one of the most ancient and enduring images of the
priesthood. The fullness of priesthood is the office of bishops
(Lumen Gentium, 26).
Vocation, from the Latin root “Vocare” which means “to
call” is a call to a stable state of life that is discerned out as
being God’s way of leading a person to salvation. It is not a
career and must be distinguished from careers. If someone
thinks that priesthood is a job, then the person should likewise consider marriage as a job. There are only three vocations but thousands of careers. The Church recognizes vocations to the married life, to the priesthood, and to religious
life. There are also persons who have purposefully and deliberately chosen to live a single life for the sake of being more
available for the work of the Church in addition to career
duties and obligations. A significantly less number of persons
have chosen this state of life. The Church also cautiously
recognizes them.
The Catholic priesthood which is a mystery, an ineffable gift of God to his Church is at the heart of Christian vocations. Every Catholic priest is called by God to proclaim the
“Good News” of salvation to the world and to lead God’s
people in worship, especially in making present the saving
sacrifice of Jesus on the cross in the Eucharist. Priests are
called to live a celibate life which is the symbol of pastoral
love and fountain of spiritual fatherhood and a source of efficacy and power. It is a special glory of the Catholic priesthood. It is true that the priesthood, like every other calling,
has its own challenges, hardships and trials, its own afflictions and sorrows, but such is the priestly calling that sorrow
is turned into joy. Loneliness which some people give as one

Second & Fifth Sunday of the month
of the reasons for running away from priesthood is a part of
every vocation at one time or another; even married people
do have the same experience. It is part of the human condition. The priest lives among the people and shares his life
with them. Christ the Good Shepherd calls out on young people to consider the vocation to the priesthood or religious life.
Parents are advised to assist their children in discerning their
vocation. This Sunday, as World Vocations Sunday, asks us
to examine our conscience in regards to how we encourage or
discourage vocations to the priesthood and religious life.
Sure, it is easy to pray for an increase in the number of
priests and religious, but it’s a more generous prayer to wish
that God would honor your family with this sublime calling.
We need priests to continue with the work of Christ the Good
Shepherd in the Church.

toward emergency needs for children, adults, and families in Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles Counties. You are their hope! Your gift provides a one-time
emergency help for Food, Utilities, Transportation,
Medical, Housing or Funeral Expenses.
100% of your contributions help our parish priests provide emergency assistance to mothers, children and
individuals: Food and milk for three days, lodging for
the night, emergency medical care, rent to tide over a
financial crisis and burial assistance. Envelopes will be
available next week at the entrance of the Church.

Jubilee Year of Divine Mercy
In line with the Church's celebration of the Jubilee of
Divine Mercy - we will be offering the sacrament of

St. Anthony Church continue its an
ongoing CASE Drive. CASE
(Community Alliance to Support and
Empower) serves the need of those in
need within our community. At this
time, CASE is helping 48 families and
children who reside in El Segundo.
Items needed in their food pantry during lent include: canned foods (chicken and tuna), canned soups,
spaghetti sauce, pasta, canned fruits, paper goods, toilet paper, napkins, kitchen paper towels, toothpaste,
soap, tissues/Kleenex, and cleaning supplies, liquid
dishwashing, laundry detergent, Comet, Lysol, etc....

St. Anthony Church will be
held at Mater Dolorosa Retreat Center in the foothills of
Sierra Madre. Join your fellow parishioners for this
weekend of spiritual enrichment and growth.
The Passionist retreat team offers inspirational talks, as
well as time for quiet prayer, and Mass, Confession,
and Stations of the Cross. Relax in the beautiful
grounds, explore the sacred garden of Our Lady of Sorrows, and the recently remodeled pathways of the Stations of the Cross (actual distance of Christ’s journey to
the crucifixion). Requested donation: $240.00 ($50.00
non-refundable deposit) The theme for this year is “No

Our retreat begins on Friday evening with a buffet dinner and concludes Sunday after Mass. On Mother’s

Mensaje para Reflexionar
En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a los judíos: “Mis ovejas
escuchan mi voz; yo las conozco y ellas me siguen. Yo
les doy la vida eterna y no perecerán jamás; nadie las
arrebatará de mi mano. Me las ha dado mi Padre, y Él es
superior a todos. El Padre y yo somos uno”.
Para comprender mejor este texto nos ayudaría conocer la pregunta que se le hizo a Jesús para que dijera estas palabras.
Los judíos, desesperados ante las palabras de Jesús, le
habían exigido: “¿Hasta cuándo vas a tenernos en suspenso? Si eres el Cristo, dilo claramente de una vez.”
Ante esta exigencia Jesús les deja claro que él es el
Buen Pastor, es el Hijo de Dios y Él y su Padre son uno.
Pero ellos no quieren escuchar, no solo no aceptan sus
palabras sino que buscarán matarlo después de este encuentro. Así es como toman sentido las palabras de Jesús, “mis ovejas escuchan mi voz”, es decir, escuchar sus
palabras es creer en él, creer en su presencia, creer que
él es verdaderamente el Hijo de Dios que nos revela al
Padre, sabernos conocidos, amados por él. Más para
aquellos que no escuchan es imposible creer esto y más
imposible saberse amados y conocidos por Dios.
Por lo tanto, Jesús nos invita a entrar en una relación estrecha con él; pues, ¿quién escucha a alguien
que no le interesa, quién sigue a alguien que no conoce,
quién se sabe amado por alguien que no posee una relación con él? Definitivamente a Jesús sólo se le escucha y
se le reconoce cuando se cree en él. ¿Alguna vez te haz
visto diciéndole a Dios: “Señor, háblame claro, ¿qué quieres que entienda de todo esto”? O tal vez preguntándole
a Dios “¿Señor, qué hago, dame una señal?” A la luz de
este Evangelio cabría preguntarnos si es Dios el que no
nos habla o nosotros que no queremos escuchar. ¿Es
Dios que no nos conoce o nosotros que no escuchamos?
Dios nos invita hoy a abrir nuestro corazón, a acercarnos
a él, a conocerlo y amarlo para poder y “querer” escucharlo a él. ¿Cuántas veces nos hablará Dios en un día?
¿Cuántas veces lo escuchamos? Nadie puede escuchar
a quien no quiere escuchar. En tu matrimonio, en tu trabajo, en tu oración, Dios se hace presente, te habla pidiéndote una respuesta; tal vez pidiéndote paciencia,
comprensión, caridad, perdón, silencio, decisión, muchas
cosas puede pedirte Dios en tu vida, pero sólo si te atreves a sentirte su oveja, a sentirte en estrecha relación
con él, escucharás su voz.
Este atento esta semana para que pueda escuchar
a Dios. Abre tu corazón, deja que Su Palabra penetre tu
vida. Trata de vivir atento durante tu día para reconocer
su voz que te llama, en el prójimo, en tu familia, en tu
trabajo, en el necesitado. Ahí está Dios presente para
amarte y para que escuches su voz.
