Long emerged from a field of 57 bowlers and became the sixth seed after bowling his seven games of qualifying. The event was held at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno. The event ran from January 10-12. Bowlers bowled on the USBC White pattern. Long held off 10-time world champion and number four seed Tetsuya Kobayashi of Japan for the title (257-190). In the Round of 8 (best of three games), Long defeated Darryl Okamoto, from Honolulu, Hawaii, 3-0. He then proceeded on to the semi-final round and defeated Cris Ferreira, from Visalia, 259-248 before taking on his championship final match against Kobayashi. Long, fresh off winning the Modesto 6-Gamer back on December 8, averaged 240 for qualifying and averaged 250 in match play. He said winning this title brought a “tear in my eye!” A new resident to Bakersfield, Long moved here this past summer from northern California. He has bowled since the age of 3 which now makes it 35 years. Long, a lefty, was the only one to win all his matches in match play. He won $2,000 for this first title as well as received 25,000 PBA points. THE COLUMBIA 300 FORTY FRAME GAME TO JOIN USBC OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS AT NBS By Matt Cannizzaro ARLINGTON, Texas - The Forty Frame Game and the United States Bowling Congress have agreed on a partnership that will bring the popular tournament to the National Bowling Stadium's Showcase Lanes in 2014, and Columbia 300 will serve as the event's title sponsor. The Columbia 300 Forty Frame Game, which started in 1989, has been held in the same host city as the USBC Open Championships since 1992, but Reno, Nev., in 2014 will mark the first time for the two events to be held in the same venue. "The Columbia 300 Forty Frame Game draws thousands of competitors each year with its fun format and unique jackpots, and we're looking forward to adding it to the variety of events at the NBS," said Brian Lewis, USBC Managing Director of Tournaments. "We saw last year that bowlers love the convenience of the on-site side tournaments, and the uniqueness of The Columbia 300 Forty Frame Game will ensure that bowlers of all skill and interest levels can find an event for them." The Columbia 300 Forty Frame Game is a handicap singles tournament of 40 continuous frames that includes no-tap frames, mulligans, bonus pins and other fun challenges. There also is a variety of side events and doubles for bowlers to earn additional prize money. The tournament has welcomed more than 300,000 bowlers and paid more than $10.5 million in 25 years of competition. "We are thrilled to be partners with Columbia 300, one of the top ball brands in bowling, and to be part of the offerings to USBC bowlers," said Jim Walter, owner of The Forty Frame Game. "Our unique format is a lot of fun and also gives participants the chance to practice and possibly win some money in the same atmosphere where they will be competing for bowlin g 's nati onal c hampi ons hips. " The Columbia 300 Forty Frame Game will be held on the Showcase Lanes, which also are used for team practice sessions. There will be specific afternoon and evening squad times for The Columbia 300 Forty Frame Game as well as morning and early-afternoon times set aside for team practice sessions on the Showcase Lanes. "Columbia 300 represents fun bowling competition with your friends, making partnership with The Forty Frame Game a perfect fit," Columbia 300 Brand Manager Bugsy Kelly said. "We look forward to helping make The Co- lumbia 300 Forty Frame Game a special experience that every bowler will want to make part of their Reno visit." Prize money for Forty Frame Game tournaments nationwide, including The Forty Frame Game in the event's hometown of Toledo, Ohio, and a Ladies Doubles, traditionally held alongside the USBC Women's Championships (since 1995), is approximately $450,000. Top performers also earn an all-expense-paid trip to The Forty Frame Game National Championship Finals held each November in Las Vegas, where they can win additional prize money. The Forty Frame National Championship This event is held each year on the first or second weekend in November to determine The Forty Frame Game National Champion. The site is the Silver Nugget Casino and Bowling Center in Las Vegas. There are preliminary rounds of bowling starting Friday evening and ending on Saturday or Sunday morning with six finalists going head to head for all the marbles in The Forty Frame Game Championship Finals. It is a fun event and another opportunity to win more dollars. Eligible finalists are the top winners from the Toledo, USBCBA and USBCWBA plus any league champions who are sponsored by their bowling centers. All participants receive free transportation, lodging and meals. Guests are welcome at their own expense. It is a party atmosphere and an exciting conclusion to The Forty Frame Game season. As the reigning Masters champion and current Professional Bowlers Association Player of the Year, Belmonte will be the man to beat when the event takes place at Brunswick Zone Carolier in North Brunswick, N.J. The Masters begins Tuesday, Feb.18, with qualifying. Belmonte, who last month won the Barbasol PBA Tournament of Champions, defeated Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, 258-245, in last year's Masters championship match to win his first PBA major title. Successfully defending the Masters title has proven to be an extremely difficult task in the 63-year history of the tournament. It's only happened twice and not since 1965. Billy Welu won the event in 1964 and 1965, while Dick Hoover was the first to win consecutive titles in 1956 and 1957. "It's so difficult to win any event back-to-back, but with a three-game, knock-out format, you can come up against the wrong guy at the wrong time and be knocked out," Belmonte said. "Last year, I focused purely on my own game, and this year I'll be doing the same thing." Belmonte will have one advantage on the field when he takes to the lanes next week. As the reigning champion, he is guaranteed a spot in the 64player double-elimination match-play bracket. He will bowl qualifying to try to earn the highest seeding position possible. All players will bowl 15 games of qualifying over three days to determine the match-play field. The top 63 players will join Belmonte in the unique threegame, double-elimination bracket. The top five players at the conclusion of the bracket will advance to the stepladder finals and compete in the live two-hour championship round on ESPN on Sunday, Feb.23, at 3 p.m. ET. Earlier in his career, he worked as a team member on the Professional Bowlers Association and Professional Women’s Bowling Association tours for Columbia 300. He is a former member of Team USA and his playing honors include a silver medal at the 1998 World Tenpin Team Cup in Amsterdam and he was also part of the Ebonite Nitro/R's team that won two Grand Championships at the Brunswick World Team Challenge Series in 1994 and 1996. Murphy replaces Stu Upson, who resigned from USBC on February 4. The USBC Board of Directors will conduct a national search for a permanent replacement. SERVING THE BOWLING INDUSTRY SINCE 1967 Here is a Rain-day Bowling Story Fred Eisenhammer LA Bowling Examiner As we bask in the balmy weather of the City of Angels, we know full well about how inclement weather has invaded other areas of the country. So it’s no surprise that bowling centers have popped up everywhere to the east of us as a viable indoor activity. It’s been a favorite activity at the White House since 1947 when two bowling lanes were presented to President Harry Truman and placed in the basement of the West Wing. It was a gift to Truman from the people of his home state of Missouri. Here are some quick White House bowling notes from the book ―How the White House Really Works‖ authored by George Sullivan: -- One of the best bowlers on the White House lanes was Lady Bird Johnson, the wife of President Lyndon Johnson. She once rolled a 188 and talked about the usefulness of White House lanes during a Mideast crisis on June 5, 1967, in her book, ―White House Diary‖: ―The U.N. was struggling . . . the Security Council going into session for five or six hours . . . like millions of others I strained with hope toward the U.N. and what it might produce. But I remembered with dismay the expressions of no confidence . . . I turned off the TV and went over to the bowling lanes where I used up my energy in three games, hurling a heavier ball than usual and running up scores in the 150s. All by myself. And while I’m bowling, I don’t think about anything else.‖ -- President Richard Nixon set the presidential high with a 233 game. He bowled one game after another in rapid succession. He sometimes would total 20 games in one night. President Ronald Reagan and his family were not bowlers. Joe Taylor, the longtime caretaker of the lanes, never saw President Reagan bowl. Here they are: Remember exactly where your sliding foot is in your stance position—that is, what board it’s on. Watch to see whether you rolled that ball over your spot on the lane and what the ball was doing at the arrow or spot area. See where your hand is after the delivery and what position it is in. Look at where your sliding foot is at the foul line and check to see if it is in a straight line from stance position to delivery point in relationship to your target. Let’s talk about each of these check points one by one. Let’s presume that you are lining yourself up for a strike. Put your feet together, pointed straight ahead, sliding foot slighting ahead of the other. Here’s the reason for this foot position. If you pick out your position on the approach with your sliding foot, then bring up the other foot behind it, you will be more conscious of the position of the sliding foot. Now let your bowling arm hang down against your leg, fingers pointed to the floor. The fingers should be hanging pointed over the last dot on the approach if there are five dots. This dot is on the same board as the second arrow. Some bowling centers have seven dots. If this is the case, use the second dot in from the end as this dot is in line with the second arrow. Wiggle your feet around until you are in the right position and remember where that sliding foot is. Now deliver the ball and keep your eye constantly on the arrow until the ball rolls over it. Did the ball roll over the spot or miss it? You don’t know because you weren’t concentrating on the spot? Do it again. The ball must continue over the spot (second arrow) another 10 or 15 feet before it hooks. So that means you must stroke the arm toward the target and that will help to get your hand up in front of your face in the follow through. Stay at the foul line until the ball hits the pins. This assures a solid delivery and you have control of the ball. If you can’t stay at the foul line, we’ll discuss this later. Why did I say to bring your hand up in front of your face? Several reasons: It helps you keep your balance, helps point you in the direction of the target, but, most of all, it tells you what position your hand is in. Remember, your thumb steers and guides the ball. So the position of your thumb will tell you the whole story. Where your thumb goeth, there goeth the ball. The simplest explanation is to shake hands with the pins or your target. Your thumb should be at about the 11:00 position, wrist firm and with no wrinkles on it. Look at it—it’s probably ―broken‖ with the fingers open and no feeling of lift. How can you feel the ball coming off your fingers if you don’t keep them curled? Here’s an easy way to do it. Before you push the ball out in the delivery, squeeze the ball slightly with your two bowling fingers and keep the two outside fingers firmly on the ball. Keep that same feeling all the way through the arm swing and delivery. Now you will deliver such a great ball and it will really shake the pins and break up large combinations of pins. Hope you’ve stayed at the foul line so you can see where you sliding foot was in relation to the foul line at the delivery point. If you walk crooked from your starting point (which you remembered, I hope), you will know why your ball missed the spot or angled badly after passing over the spot. You must become consistent in your approach so when you start walking toward spares, you can do the same thing—only walk at an angle towards them, using the same technique as for your strikes. I’d venture to say that 85% of the bowlers walk crooked to the line. How can you swing the ball in a straight line if you walk crooked? Here are some helpful tips: If you are really concentrating on the arrow, you’ll see it ―move‖ to the left or right if you walk crooked; your first or second step is usually the one you go off to one side with; have someone you can trust watch you from the rear and this may help you. If you drift across the approach on strikes—and I’m only talking about strikes— before you start, point your toes in the opposite direction of your drift. It works; try it. Remember the four check points and make yourself do them every time you bowl. I’ll bet by now some of you have raised your averages at least 10 pins. So keep practicing until next month. Final tip: Did you know that there are five boards between each dot and each arrow? Also that all the dots are on the same board as the arrows? 8 www.bowlingworld.com - FEBRUARY 2014 Idle Bowling Thoughts By Chuck Pezzano Too often bowling has been depicted as an activity that has overcome a rather sordid past. As a youngster I sort of reluctantly accepted the oft repeated tales of drinking and gambling and assorted other ills as the main lure of the game, and not the thrill of rolling a ball and knocking down more pins than the other bowlers. Early in my writing career I met some people who were involved with the very early days of the sport and others who were related to or know some of the pioneers of the game. One day a fellow sportswriter handed me a package, told me that an older women had dropped it off and if I didn’t want it, just throw it away. It was a scrapbook of bowling articles that appeared to be from 1900 to 1905. I was surprised, fascinated and proud as I eagerly devoured every word. It was all quite positive, perhaps by design or maybe because that’s the way it was. It had many a piece about woman’s bowling and they were informative, educational and illustrative of the larger role played by women in bowling history than ever imagined. Serving on various Hall of Fame and other committees I had the opportunity to peruse long ago publications and articles about the sport plus much of the research done by bowling scholars such as Al Matzelle, Bruce Pluckhahn and Herm Weiskopf. Sure there was some gambling, drinking, plenty of needling, lip action, equipment tampering and all the rest that goes along with the evolution of a sport, however there was the touch of class given by builders, engineers, women, churches, athletic and social clubs and people from every walks of life. In a game that on the surface seems to change little, there have been many changes. The equipment, balls, pins, machines have all evolved and thus changed the sport. Lanes, lane dressing and conditioning changes can and have filled books. Change isn’t bad unless it is change for change sake alone. A case can be made for and against every major innovation in the sport, and a good case can be made for the abilities of star bowlers who lived from the turn of the last century and before. Can any solid conclusion be drawn? I doubt it. If you had a buck for every discussion about the merits or demerits of various star bowlers, bowling balls, drilling, pins, lanes, and lane conditioning you could travel around the world a time or two. There remain many loose ends. Almost all would admit that soft conditions and the tremendous scores may have done some damage, but the scoring brickyards are just as damaging, aren’t they? Popcorn pins might be terrible, but are trees any better? Some leagues, centers and bowling groups might be out of touch, but don’t we have bowling segments that are out in space? And on and on it goes. If the answers were simple, there wouldn’t be any opposing opinions. Getting back to super stars… Some of today’s top scorers are criticized because they don’t have the style, ball, mental attitude or whatever of some of the great old timers. You look at the records and some of the junior bowlers already have better stats than fabled Hall of Famers. So the beat can go on in a ridiculous way. You do what you have to in order to obtain the best results in the era in which you perform. Let’s give credit equally all along the time line. And for those of you who are just too critical of today’s bowling, just remember that 20 years from now those will be the ―good old days!‖ Storm Bowling Products will provide each Pepsi Youth Championships state coordinator with a certificate to use as a fundraising tool this season. In the PBA50 Tour finals, which featured three PBA Hall of Famers who qualified based on competition points earned during the 2013 PBA50 Tour season, two -time PBA50 Player of the Year Williams defeated Venezuela’s Amleto Monacelli, 224-204, after Monacelli eliminated 2013 PBA50 Rookie of the Year Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo.,243-208, in the first match. ―The fans had a chance to see three players with a lot of history with the organization and who had great seasons on the PBA50 Tour,‖ Williams, an Ocala, Fla., resident, said. ―You can’t get much better than that.‖ Williams, who won three PBA50 Tour titles in 2013, led throughout the match before Monacelli made a late charge with a three-bagger heading into the 10th frame. But Monacelli left the 4 pin on his first ball in the 10th and missed the spare to end his chances. ―The momentum was going back and forth,‖ Williams said. ―It was going my way with a four-bagger and then I left a 10 pin in the ninth which gave Amleto a chance. I was really surprised when he left the 4 pin. If he strikes, the match could have gone down to the last ball.‖ Laughlin, who won the combined PBA West/Northwest RPI to qualify for the finals, defeated South Region representative Tom Daugherty of Wesley Chapel, Fla., 225-187, to win the special event for PBA regional champions. The RPI Finals included six PBA members who won RPI titles in their respective regions. Laughlin won his opening round match by rolling a 222 game against East Region representative Brian LeClair of Albany, N.Y. (198) and Southwest Region representative Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas (163). Daugherty’s 244 eliminated Midwest Region representative Dave Beres of Waukesha, Wis. (202) and Central Region representative Brian Kretzer of Dayton, Ohio (177). ―Bowling on ESPN was a dream come true,‖ the 42year-old Laughlin said. ―It’s the best feeling I’ve ever had in bowling. ―I bowled on Tour during the 2005-06 season, but I didn’t fare so well,‖ he added. ―I’ve been bowling regionals ever since and enjoying it. The RPI program with a TV show this year was great. You couldn’t ask for much more than that. It absolutely provided incentives for regional players to get out and bowl.‖ The Teen Masters Grand Championship featured a re -match of last season's finalists, which Young also won. He won his second straight $64,000 scholarship package – the richest scholarship prize in the sport – by beating Ashley Dunn of Palmdale, CA, in a one-ball roll -off after the best-of-two-game match ended in a tie. Dunn, who was swept in the 2012 title match, got the upper hand when she won the first game, 179-160, but Young sent the match into sudden-death with a 184153 decision in game two. In the roll-off, Young struck and Dunn left the 2-4-5 to hand Young the victory. Young, who will graduate from Viera High School in 2014, will attend collegiate powerhouse Robert Morris University-Illinois next fall and plans to pursue a career in cyber security PBA RPI FINALS: South Point Exhibition Hall, Las Vegas Championship Ben Laughlin, Chandler, Ariz. Schedule Feb 15-17 AMF Mission Lanes Feb 22-23 Danville Bowl Mar 1-2 Clayton Valley Bowl Mar 8-9 4th Street Bowl Mar 15-16 AMF Diablo Valley Mar 22-23 AMF Pinole Lanes Mar 29-30 AMF Mission Lanes APR 1-6 SPRING NATIONALS $25,000 1ST SAM’S TOWN, LAS VEGAS Slump's can be one of the hardest things in our game to get over. If you ask 100 people how to break a slump you will probably get 100 different answers. I have a few idea's of my own. First remember you know how to bowl, you haven't forgotten how you have just lost your confidence. When you lose confidence, your ability to bowl on auto pilot goes out the window. You begin to over-think everything. Your approach becomes uncomfortable. You start steering every shot. The harder you try to correct these things the more you do them. You go practice more but usually it just makes things worse and prolongs the slump because you are practicing the very thing that got the slump started in the first place. You want to try to relax and quit thinking, try to concentrate on hitting your target and nothing else. What I do to break my slump is to take a couple of weeks off. I get a sub for leagues and even bypass a tournament if one is coming up. I get away from bowling altogether. This helps me to reset my brain as it pertains to bowling. Then when I come back, I have forgotten all the things that started the slump in the first place. I am relaxed and having fun again. Getting away for some people is the quickest fix. Q. I got a new ball for Christmas, went to the pro shop to get it drilled. I was asked what reaction I was trying to achieve. I told the expert what I would like to see the ball do. He watched me throw a few shot's and drilled the ball for me. When he handed it to me I was shocked to find not only the finger and thumb holes but a large hole in the side of the ball. I did not ask for this extra hole to be put in the ball. I asked why this was done and was told it is a weight hole. What is a weight hole? Apr 12-13 AMF Pinole Lanes Apr 19-20 Diablo Valley Apr 26-27 AMF Mission Lanes (925) 945-1204 bay.abtbowling.com A. To help the ball get certain rolling characteristics the ball is drilled off center. This can leave the ball with more weight on one side than is allowed by USBC equipment rules. You are only allowed 3 ounces of top weight and 1 ounce of side weight. The also 1 ounce of either thumb or finger weight. The size and depth of the hole is determined by how much weight needs to be removed to make the ball legal by USBC specs. Only one weight hole is allowed. The weight hole does not hurt the ball. In fact it many times helps the reaction of the ball even more. Q. I bowl in a center that has a long oil pattern. My ball speed is pretty fast and I am having problems with the ball getting to the pocket. What can I do besides slow down to increase hook? Phuoc Do $1,160, Steven Nakatsu 2nd. 4th Street Bowl 1/19 ABT Bay Winner: Fred Rivera $1,500 Al Aguilar - 2nd Danville Bowl, 1/12 ABT Bay Winner: Eduardo Santos $2,000 Phuoc Do 2nd Clayton Valley 1/5 10 www.bowlingworld.com - FEBRUARY 2014 A. Here is what you need to know about ball speed. There are more things in bowling that add up to to become speed. Throwing the ball fast, speed. Heavy oil reacts like speed. Polished ball, speed. High rg ball, speed. Weak cover stock, speed. All of these things act like more speed. You have to try to achieve a balance to get the reaction you are after. You have ball speed and wet lanes. You need to temper this with a lower rg ball, or with a drilling pattern to get the ball into an earlier roll You may need a sanded ball or matte finish ball to get a read on the lanes. You might need some or maybe all of these things to increase your ball reaction on the lanes. Your objective is to slow the ball down by increasing friction between ball and lane. Just a note for all my readers my wife and I are taking a bucket list cruise to New Zealand and Australia starting in February. (Jan. 26, 2014) – Australia’s Jason Belmonte, with a strike on his final ball, defeated Wes Malott of Pflugerville, Texas, to win the Barbasol Professional Bowlers Association Tournament of Champions by a single pin Sunday at Thunderbowl Lanes. Belmonte, a 30-year-old two-handed player, defeated Malott, 219-218, after earning the top berth in the stepladder finals by 363 pins over England’s Dom Barrett, but he escaped with his one-pin victory when Malott left an 8 pin on his first shot in the 10th frame. Belmonte collected his eighth career victory and second PBA major title just a week after being named 2012 -13 PBA Player of the Year. He also earned $40,000 and a celebratory Barbasol shaving cream pie-in-thefame from close friend and fellow competitor Bill O’Neill. “I got extremely lucky,” Belmonte said. “When it really counted, I didn’t throw a good shot and gave Wes a chance. I was pretty sure he was going to win. I couldn’t believe it when I looked up and saw the 8 pin standing.” The victory avenged Belmonte’s 214-156 loss to Malott in the 2013 U.S. Open title match, another tournament Belmonte had dominated until the final game. “Other than the U.S. Open, this was one of my best start-to-finish performances ever,” Belmonte said. “I’m extremely proud to put my name on this trophy. “To win a major championship and player of the year in the same week? That’s pretty tough to beat,” he grinned. Malott advanced to the title match with a 205-202 victory over Barrett, the 2013 PBA World Champion, in a contest where strikes were hard to come by late in the game. Barrett failed to convert the 2-8-10 split in the seventh frame, giving Malott the edge. But Malott was unable to take advantage, leaving four consecutive 10 pins to keep Barrett in the match. Needing a strike on his first shot in the 10th win, Barrett also left a 10 pin. In the second match, Dan MacLelland made a fatal mistake when he left the 4-6-7-10 split in the fourth frame and failed to convert. Malott struck on eight of his final nine shots to race away with a 248-199 win to end MacLelland’s hopes of becoming the first Canadian to win a PBA Tour title. In the opening match, MacLelland, a fifth-year PBA player making his seventh career television appearance, eliminated defending Tournament of Champions winner Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., 259-211. Weber, a 37-time PBA champion who was making his 133rd television appearance, made two uncharacteristic mistakes – failing to convert the 3-10 split in the first frame and missing the 3-6- 10 in the fifth – and MacLelland answered with a string of eight strikes to end the 51-year-old Weber’s bid for a record 11th PBA major title. San Bruno Bowling Center, formerly Woodhaven Lanes Bowling Alley, will open "as soon as we're ready," confirmed building owner Salvatore Muzzi, adding that will likely be in the next couple of months. The lanes have undergone internal transformation since last summer, including new paint featuring the colors of the Italian flag, Muzzi's native country. The red, green and white dotting the building's interior columns and portions of the floor by the lanes are also the colors of the Mexican flag. When the bowling alley's former owner AMF closed the facility abruptly in the summer of 2012, it subsequently gutted the interior of the building, including the machines used to place pins and return bowling balls - now being replaced by Muzzi. Muzzi is waiting on the pin setting machines ordered from Germany that will "maybe" arrive at the end of January. The walls will be cut to accommodate the eight-foot machines. As of Wednesday, crews were sanding the lanes to ensure they are level. Muzzi added that he plans to paint giant American flags on each of the walls that hug the bowling lanes. The carpets will not be replaced at this time, but are being steam cleaned. "We still have a lot of work to do here," Muzzi said. Repairs are being made to Corkwood Lounge, which was a bar, but Muzzi isn't certain of its endgame. He does not have a liquor license, but suggested a potential partnership between the bowling center and the adjoining Corkwood Restaurant, which has a beer and wine license. The bowling alley's adjoining restaurant, Corkwood, has remained in business John's Incredible Pizza Coming to Newark With 60,000-sq. ft. Deal By Nathan Donato-Weinstein Real Estate Reporter-Silicon Valley Business Journal John's Incredible Pizza, a growing entertainment concept that features all-you-can-eat pies, rides, games, bowling and more, is coming to Newark — filling a former Target location that went dark in 2012. The 10-location chain, based in Southern California, has signed a lease to occupy 60,000 square feet at the Newpark Mall, a 1.1-million-square-foot retail center that opened in 1980. The arrival will bring 200 jobs with it, said Pamela Hurley, a spokeswoman for John's Incredible Pizza. John's will locate on the lower level of the mall where Target used to be. The retailer's departure in 2012 for a new location in Fremont was a serious blow to the city. Jon Stansbury of Terranomics Retail Services, and Jerry Bertholdi of JB&A Real Estate & Development, represented John's Incredible Pizza. This will be the first Bay Area location for John's, which also has a location in Roseville. ―We‘ve been looking to become a part of the greater San Jose community for years now," said John Parlet, the company's owner and founder (hence the name). "After reviewing multiple locations, the NewPark Mall is a natural fit due to the ample parking available to our guests, and the ease of freeway accessibility.‖ John's will feature nearly 200 games, miniature golf, family bowling, party rooms and themed dining rooms, and big-screen TVs — and, of course, an all-you-can-eat pizza buffet. The company was founded in 1997 in Victorville. It now has 10 locations and plans to open two to three a year. Its typical footprint is about 50,000 square feet. Consumers buy a ticket for lunch or dinner, which gets you admission to the complex. Hurley said the location should be open in late-2014. 16 www.bowlingworld.com - FEBRUARY 2014 San Bruno Bowling Center building owner Salvatore Muzzi painted the floor, columns and walls red, green and white, colors of his Italian heritage. (Deo Ferrer/ Democrat) since the closure of the lanes. The coffee shop and restaurant has always operated as an independent business within the building, built in 1964. Present restaurant owner and chef Charlie Chu has been at the location for 32 years. Muzzi said the renovation including the cost for the new pin machines is in the neighborhood of a few hundred thousand dollars, but would not be more specific. Almost two years ago, a simple flier taped to the glass door was all that told people - and nine employees - the business at 154 W. Main St. was closed after more than 30 years in business. At the time, AMF officials said Woodhaven Lanes wasn't performing financially. Brentwood Bowl of South San Francisco Is Moving Up The Street? Brentwood Bowl is moving up the street to the old movie theater? My understanding is the process has already began with construction of a new center. Brentwood Bowl is no light weight to bowling, they have been providing bowling for over 50 years. At a time when centers are being demolished this is just plain exciting. As soon as I get the call, I am looking forward to getting a few shots of the construction and a tad bit more information. Striking news is just to exciting to not share! Stars and Strikes Rolls Into Sandy Springs, GA With New And Upscale Family Entertainment California Based Company Brings The Vision Company responds to evolution of today‘s bowler with the introduction of a 51,000 Sq Ft Center featuring a chef-driven restaurant, private lanes, event space, state-ofthe-art video and redemption games and much more: ATLANTA, GA (October 2013) – Georgia-based Stars and Strikes announced that construction is underway on the company‘s fifth and largest family entertainment center, which is slated to open December 2013 with a redesign that‘s both kidfriendly and adult focused. Located at 8767 Roswell Road in Sandy Springs--just south of the river on Roswell Road--the 51,000 square foot location will consist of new construction, including a former retail location in the North River Shopping Complex. Stars and Strikes’ Sandy Springs location offers: • 8 Upscale, private lanes • 20 traditional state-of-the-art bowling lanes • A two-story laser tag arena • Laser maze • Game room with prize store 710 Grille, a chef-driven restaurant that seats 250 • Full and circular bar with interactive, LED lighting and a wide selection of beers on tap • Live entertainment every weekend on the HUB Entertainment Stage • Dedicated, private birthday party rooms • Multiple private event spaces • 40 TV screens ranging in size from 42-52 inches • 9 Projection screens in private event spaces • Complimentary self-parking Jack Canouse, one of two managing partners and a co-founder with Stars and Strikes said, ―we are extremely excited about this new project and look forward to bringing our upscale family entertainment center to Sandy Springs and the surrounding area. We‘re looking forward to offering an array of attractions and recreational activities for the entire family.‖ According to the Bowling Proprietors Association of America, bowling is now the nation‘s number one participatory sport. Unlike the ‗alley‘s‘ of the past, today‘s generation--of both leisure and professional bowlers--require technology, diversity of entertainment and fresh menu options. ―After months of market research and many years in the business, we‘ve discovered there‘s a need for this type of recreational facility,‖ said Chris Albano, managing partner and co-founder of Stars and Strikes. ―The Sandy Springs location will serve as an entertainment and dining destination for all ages and have broad appeal to families, churches, schools, corporate outings, or simply for a girls or boys night out. Our vision is to provide a tremendously fun experience in a safe, clean, comfortable, smoke-free atmosphere with great customer service and value.‖ With four other locations across Metro Atlanta, including Cumming, (opened 2005), Lawrenceville (opened 2007), Dallas (opened 2008) and Stone Mountain (opened 2011), the modernized and reinvented Stars and Strikes in Sandy Springs will attract all ages. The 20-lanes of bowling will appeal to all customers, including the professional bowlers looking for a higher quality bowling experience, which is only accentuated by the digital imaging highlighting everything from personalized company logos and celebration messages to national and local sports teams. The new location will also boast eight, private lanes called the Blue Room. Complete with custom sofas, dedicated staff and privacy curtains, each lane can be rented individually or as a room, making it the ideal venue for a gathering with friends or colleagues. When it‘s time to slip away between frames or after the party, Stars and Strikes will also offer everything from DJ nights, comedy and karaoke from the HUB Entertainment Stage. The 40 TV screens found throughout Stars and Strikes will provide patrons with videos, live sporting events, movies and news, ensuring a tremendous experience while they bowl. All 28-lanes will be equipped with bumpers that automatically rise or descend depending on the player, allowing everyone to bowl according to their skill set. Stars and Strikes of Sandy Springs will also be the launch of the company‘s new restaurant concept, 710 Grille. The 250-seat restaurant will offer seasonally-inspired food including a variety of appetizers, specialty salads, signature soups, sandwiches, wood oven pizza, steaks and other popular items. Unlike the ‗bowling alley food‘ of years past, 710 Grille will be a chef-driven establishment that allows patrons to have an entertainment and culinary experience--all under the same roof. ―We‘re excited to have Stars and Strikes locate in Sandy Springs,‖ said District 2 Councilmember Dianne Fries. ―Its location provides a family-friendly entertainment alternative on our northern end, as well as enhances revitalization efforts in this area. I can‘t wait to go bowling!‖ Design Development, a firm out of California, was selected by Stars and Strikes to bring the vision for the highly-anticipated Sandy Springs location to life. From cherry woods, flexible seating and lighting that adjust from day to night, the company‘s newest location has set out to be a benchmark in the family entertainment center industry. Stars and Strikes of Sandy Springs is providing up to 120 new jobs. FEBRUARY 2014 - www.bowlingworld.com 17 From Page 15 West Lane News His and Hers (week #1) Ron Lubin 268 Ted Handel 247 T. H. Fondly remembered as the entertainment hub of West Sacramento, the El Rancho complex lost steam after I80 was built in 1956 and bypassed “motel row”. The bowling alley has always been owned by families with the third family purchasing it 12 years ago and renaming it Capitol Bowl. “The remodeling of Capitol Bowl adds to the attraction of West Sacramento’s downtown, from the new Community Center to the City College campus, from the Turner Library to the streetscape improvements on West Sacramento Avenue,” said West Sacramento Mayor Christopher Cabaldon. “The city congratulates the Capitol Bowl on its commitment to providing great family recreation.” “As a part of our community for 60 years, I believe this newly remodeled bowling alley and restaurant will provide their same home town feel and continue to be an important addition to our ever growing community here in West Sacramento,” added Denise Seals, President and CEO of the West Sacramento Chamber of Commerce. Capitol Bowl’s remodel was extensive, not for the lanes but for the social areas including the restaurant and bar as well as the registration desk. The Café and Lounge have a new, more extensive menu that includes all of the traditional comfort food for a bowling alley café but has expanded to include some more sophisticated items including: a three-cheese macaroni and cheese with bacon, calamari made with Buttermilk, fish tacos and both regular and sweet potato fries hand -cut fresh daily. In total, the remodel and facelift for Capitol Bowl will cost just over $600k and will include a new full-service restaurant with patio seating, three party rooms and a new bar area designed to include live music. Most of the funding is through an SBA lender. The Redevelopment Agency provided a $140k low-interest loan for equipment and furnishing. When construction is complete in about three months, Capitol Bowl expects to add three to five new full time positions. As family owners, Capitol Bowl is more of a labor of USBC Sets Future Convention love than a golden ticket. “Without the ongoing help Sites, Proposed Legislation from the City staff this project would not have been possible,” explained Ross Amin, co-owner of Capitol By Terry Bigham Bowl. “Fortunately the City of West Sacramento has been a tremendous supporter for our project as part of ARLINGTON, Texas – The host sites for the United the redevelopment of the West Sacramento waterfront States Bowling Congress Convention and Annual area.” Meeting have been determined for 2015, 2016 and 2017. The USBC Board of Directors approved Indianapolis as the site for the 2015 USBC Convention while Las Vegas will serve as host in 2016 and 2017. The convention in 2016 coincides with the opening of the new $30 million bowling tournament facility at South Point Hotel and Casino that will be the site of the 2016 USBC Women’s Championships. FEBRUARY 2014 - www.bowlingworld.com 27 Getting Stronger Every Year – CSSBA Senior State Tournament Continues To Grow By Bette Addington California Bowling Writers In this day and age for the sport of bowling anyone deeply associated with the sport knows many events and tournaments are struggling these days to stay alive. Thank goodness there are people out there who value this sport and believe in it and work to keep it fun for participants and understand what bowlers want when they go bowl a tournament. An excellent example of a thriving event is the annual CSSBA (California State Senior Bowling Association) State Senior Tournament that just held its 44 th annual event in Clovis and Fresno, CA. This tournament has grown to be held now for five consecutive weekends starting in mid-October. It is held each year in different cities, generally in the central CA vicinity. The CSSBA organization held its first event in Bakersfield, CA in 1970 by Tournament Director, Glenn Barber. After Barber’s passing in 1996, Pete Melton took over as Tournament Director until retiring in 2009. At that time, Gina Moura became Tournament Director. Moura was Melton’s bracket operator from 2001-2008. Although Moura will not take the credit, it has been her dedication to keep this event going and growing as it has. ―This job is so rewarding. I get to meet wonderful bowlers throughout California and striving to provide great service is my priority. We offer house lane conditions and a friendly atmosphere. Our senior bowlers are having a great time out on the lanes! In a declining bowling indusGina Moura try, I am pleased that our event is growing and will continue to Tournament Director grow with our new 3 age divisions—Ages 50-59, Ages 60-69, and Ages 70+,‖ stated Gina Moura. And growing this event has! In 2007 the Team event drew 366 teams. In 2012, there were 483 teams and this year there were 452. So why the continued support and interest in this event? Quite possibly it could be because the board of CSSBA which is made up of 25 officers and directors from throughout the state, have a connection with their bowling community and even though they only meet twice a year—in the Spring and at the opening of each annual tournament—they figure out ways to, as past president, D.C. Williams stated, ―mainly show them a good time.‖ This group works hard with the centers that host the event to put out a house condition that helps the participants bowl well. And, bowling well makes bowlers happy! Happy bowlers spread the word and attract more bowlers to come Article Reprinted with bowl this event. permission Besides that, this board is constantly thinking of new ways to imThe Bowling News prove the event. In 2014, for example, CSSBA will unveil their new policy of oiling the lanes before each squad to provide equal shots thebowlingnews.net for all entrants. Bowlers have asked for this and the board listened and is delivering. Gina Moura added, ―We’re just going to keep doing what we are doing!‖ Asked a couple Bakersfield happy tournament winners, Juke ―Jenny‖ Tanaguchi and Mike Mayo, their feelings about participating in this event. This was Tanaguchi’s first year to bowl in it and she ended up placing second in Singles ―C‖ Division (50-59), seventh in All Events ―C‖ and helped her team place 11 th in the Team event, she stated, ―I like the people and the tournament was run really Mark Dinublio well.‖ Mayo, who has bowled this tournament now two years, and this year ended up tying for first in Singles ―C‖ Division and won CSSBA Assistant the All Events ―C‖, had more great comments to share, ―For whatever reason, I tend to do well at Senior State and I will therefore Tournament Director continue to bowl it. Gina does a great job organizing the event and I’ve always felt she’s been very supportive of all the bowlers. She somehow is able to keep a smile on her face during the entire tournament and I know that isn’t always easy. As far as winning goes, I never expected to do so well and feel God has blessed me with at least one tournament win—ok, two events; even better!—in my life and the State event at that! I can’t believe it. It’s just awesome! I look forward to bowling in Modesto next year. By the way, Juke also works where I do at Frito Lay. Two of the top three in our age division who work at the same location? Must be something in the chips!‖ Besides the duo from Bakersfield rising to the top, other highlights from this year’s event included Ty Dawson of Sunnyvale who rolled the high series of the event, an 803, while bowling Singles and Dennis Beets of Sugarloaf, who rolled the highest game, a 300, which he bowled during his Doubles competition. So if you’ve reached the golden age of 50 and want to join the fun in 2014, the 45th annual event is planned to be held five consecutive weekends starting October 25-26 in Modesto (Team center will be Yosemite Lanes and Doubles and Singles at McHenry Bowl). College bowling coaches also have found it to be a great place to evaluate bowlers. Applications now are being accepted for the 2014 Bowling Combine, which will take place July 22-26 at the International Training and Research Center, the home of Team USA. The annual event was developed to bring together youth bowlers who want to compete at the collegiate level and college coaches looking for bowlers who might fit into their programs. Student-athletes who have collegiate eligibility remaining and have completed at least their freshman year in high school can submit an application. Space is limited, and the application deadline is April 26. ―We expect to have another great pool of applicants this year,‖ said Rod Ross, head coach of the ITRC and Team USA. ―The student-athletes selected to participate will receive a great evaluation of their skills, plus, they will have the opportunity to meet with some of the top collegiate coaches in the country.‖ The Team USA coaching staff uses the state-of-theart tools at the ITRC to evaluate the skills of the student-athletes through tests such as shot repeatability, Ford Driving Skills for Life Signs Walter Ray Williams Jr. by Bill Vint Ford Driving Skills for Life (Ford DSFL), an initiative to promote safe driving, has teamed with the winningest player in Professional Bowlers Association history, Walter Ray Williams Jr., to help create awareness and hopefully reduce automobile crashes among release ratio, spare proficiency, breakpoint management, vertical leap and balance. The student-athletes receive an objective analysis of their skills that includes a Performance Evaluation Test (P.E.T.) score that can be used to compare all studentathletes who have attended a Bowling Combine. The bowlers also receive a recruiting kit that includes video shots, bowler variables measured and a detailed report of personal data collected at the Bowling Combine. Last year, coaches from 30 collegiate programs took part in the Bowling Combine. Gary Sparks, who led Vincennes University to a runner-up finish at the 2013 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Championships, said three of his six incoming players for the 2013-2014 season were at the 2012 Bowling Combine. ―I go to a few other camps and clinics and obviously watch bowlers at tournaments, but this gives me a perspective of a tryout atmosphere,‖ Sparks said after last year‘s Bowling Combine. ―We don‘t get a chance to see that in any other type of setting. You get a chance to really see the players, know who they are and get a one-on-one situation with them.‖ Coaches in attendance receive an evaluation of each bowler, plus have the opportunity for one-on-one contact with prospective student-athletes. Coaches must register and attend to receive the evaluations. Automobile accidents are the No. 1 killer of teenagers in America, and inexperience and distracted driving are major factors in many crashes. As such Ford Driving Skills for Life (Ford DSFL) was established in 2003 by the nonprofit Ford Motor Company Fund, the Governors Highway Safety Association, and a panel of safety experts to teach newly-licensed teens the necessary skills for safe driving beyond what they learn in standard driver education programs. ―Being familiar with bowling and always looking at innovative ways to reach teens and parents, I found that being a good bowler and a good driver have a lot in common,‖ said Jim Graham, manager Ford Driving Skills for Life Program. ―Both concentration and focus are keys to championship bowling, and the same skill set is needed to avoid potentially deadly crashes on the highways. What better person displays these skills than one of the greatest bowlers of all time, Walter Ray Williams Jr. ―Through a series of public service announcements, talking to young people and their parents at events and clinics, and an upcoming promotion, Walter Ray can help educate and guide parents and teens to the award -winning curriculum offered by Ford Driving Skills for Life.
