Historical Overview

• In 1968, an ad hoc Black Caucus was organized during the Annual
Convention of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) to
address the changing needs in higher education.
• In 1972 that caucus became the National Council on Black American
Affairs (NCBAA) —the first affiliated council of AACC.
• NCBAA serves as a collaborative voice, promoting the academic success of
African American students, faculty, staff, and administrators.

Mission Statement
The National Council on Black American Affairs is committed to:
– Improving educational opportunities and professional development for African-American
students, faculty, staff, and administration.
– Developing collaborative relationships with educational, business, and public service
institutions with compatible goals.
– Networking to maximize the achievement of career goals for African-American students,
faculty, staff, and administration.

Ensuring the articulation of positions on issues affecting African-Americans in the formulation
of policy and decision-making.

2015-2016 Goals/Planning
• Strengthening our regions.
• Consider hiring a PT staff person
(Executive Director or Assistant to the
NCBAA Board).
• Create a quarterly (monthly if possible)
communication report that shares
membership numbers, programs and
their impact, and the NCBAA position
on any current affairs.
• Develop a board member training
program for existing and new board.
• Continue to streamline operating
procedures.
• Increase utilization of communication
vehicles – Facebook, twitter, webpage,
newsletter

Relationship with the American Association of
Community Colleges

The NCBAA receives its authorization to conduct
activity as an official affiliate of the American
Association of Community Colleges
•
The president of the NCBAA has a seat on the AACC
Commission on Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity and
the Council of Affiliated Councils
•
Based on its affiliate status, the NCBAA has an
automatic selected session for the AACC
Commission. The 2015 submission was, “Holding
Them High: Showcasing Results Based African
American Student Success Programs”
•
The NCBAA conducts a reception annually at the
AACC Convention in addition to a fund raising
Awards Breakfast.

The NCBAA participates annually as a part of the
AACC Convention marketplace, distributing
marketing/membership materials and greeting
patrons desirous of learning more about the
organization

The Presidents’ Round Table is an affiliate
organization of the National Council on Black
American Affairs.
Founded in 1983, the Presidents’ Round Table
is a unique organization of community college
chief executive officers.
Priorities of the organization include the
successful matriculation of African-American
students and employment opportunities for
African Americans in community colleges
across the nation, with special emphasis on
grooming future presidents.
The Thomas Lakin Institute for Mentored
Leadership. Many of the graduates of the
Lakin Institute have gone on to become
college presidents or have advanced to higher
level positions in the ranks of community
colleges.
